Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

makes the problem just visible. Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

there seems to be more (according to blogpost in first report there is

[Bug 404097] [NEW] Tomcat 6 init script spawns 3 Tomcat instances

2009-07-24 Thread László Monda
Public bug reported:

I've recently used Tomcat on Intrepid and Jaunty. On both of them I've
experienced the same problem: There are 3 Tomcat instances spawned by
the tomcat6 init script.

I'm aware that there are efforts to make the Tomcat init scripts more
developer friendly outlined by
http://ubuntuserver.wordpress.com/2008/09/01/tomcat-6-lands-in-intrepid/
for example, but I didn't install the tomcat6-user package so there
should only be one tomcat instance by default.

There is 1 instance owned by the tomcat6 user that does some real work
and 2 other instances owned by root that do nothing.

Doing a little investigation in the tomcat6 init script it seems that
the

$DAEMON -user $TOMCAT6_USER -cp $JSVC_CLASSPATH -outfile SYSLOG
-errfile SYSLOG -pidfile $CATALINA_PID $JAVA_OPTS $BOOTSTRAP_CLASS

command spawns all the instances which is strange to me because I'd
expect a much more sophisticated solution like checking the user home
dirs for tomcat-related configuration information from the init script
and starting the instances accordingly.

I have two questions:

1) Why does the init script behave the way it does?
2) Is it possible to change the default behaviour (using only one instance) or
is it hardcoded?

Thanks!

[Bug 404097] Re: Tomcat 6 init script spawns 3 Tomcat instances

2009-07-24 Thread László Monda
Here is a chat from #tom...@freenode that pretty much explains it:

* nDuff tries to reproduce
nDuff umm
nDuff it's three process table entries, but that's just threads
nDuff it's only one copy of tomcat
nDuff NOTABUG.
nDuff mlaci, if you do a pstree on the lowest PID, you'll see that the other
two are its children.
mlaci nDuff, yeah, that's true, but that doesn't make me understand why
multiple instances are started by default
nDuff mlaci, they _aren't_ multiple instances, that's the point
nDuff mlaci, if you start Apache httpd with a multithreaded MPM, the threads
will show up as separate process table entries...
nDuff mlaci, ...but that doesn't mean there's more than one copy of Apache in
memory.
nDuff mlaci, ...looking more closely, it appears that the first two are part
of jsvc; they're normal and harmless.
nDuff mlaci, ...see the how jsvc works section at
http://commons.apache.org/daemon/jsvc.html
mlaci nDuff, the last url pretty much explains it. so 1) these processes are
all needed to make tomcat work and 2) they don't consume 3 times more memory
than a single tomcat process?
nDuff mlaci, (1) to make tomcat work in such a way that it can be controlled
via jsvc commands, yes; (2) no, absolutely not.

[Bug 380663] Re: open-iscsi initiator tries to resolve ipv6 address of target and fails

2009-07-24 Thread wereHamster
This is not a bug in OpenSolaris, it is a problem in open-iscsi. The
OpenSolaris iscsi implementation sends all IP addresses through which
hosts can connect to it. In my case these are three addresses: IPv4,
IPv6 link local and IPv6 global:

iscsiadm: finished reading text PDU, 48 hdr, 0 ah, 591 data, 1 pad
iscsiadm: TargetName=iqn.1986-03.com.sun:02:xxx
iscsiadm: TargetAddress=192.168.0.80,1
iscsiadm: TargetAddress=[fe80::230:1bff:fe12:3456],1
iscsiadm: TargetAddress=[2001:1234:5678:0:230:1bff:fe12:3456],1

The problem is that the second address, the IPv6 link local one, can
only be used to connect to the host when the application supplies the
'zone index' to the kernel (interface which the kernel should use). This
is a property of IPv6 link local addresses. Open-iscsi doesn't support
this logic yet, but when it encounters such address it skips the whole
target and goes to the next one. This even if there are other addresses
which would work fine.

The attached patch fixes it by not failing when encountering an unknown
target address. When it does it skips the address and tries the next
one. With this patch I can connect to targets on OpenSolaris just fine.

I think this is actually not a bug. I don't think all of samb4 is needed
for evolution-mapi - just libldb-samba4-0 which can be installed along
with samba. So I should be able to uninstall samba4 and just install
samba, smbfs, etc. so that mount -t cifs will work.
