I just wanted to acknowledge that if you remove the '.ever' file, and then reboot the instance any local changes you've made are going to be blown away in *this* instance. Its probably not a big deal. But, to demonstrate, something like: $ echo "LANG=en_CA.UTF-8" > /etc/default/locale $ rm /var/lib/ec2/ec2-defaults.ever $ do-the-rebundle $ reboot ... $ cat /etc/default/locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 After 'reboot' on *this* current instance, /etc/default/locale would get rewritten because ec2-set-defaults would run, because there was no '.ever' file stopping it from running. Assuming 'this' is the Access Denied issue... I will check the server event log in the morning. The backup concerned is multi-gigabyte and takes nearly five hours. Needless to say it runs overnight. [Bug 414997] Re: ec2-set-defaults should be 'run_once_per_ami'
At the moment, I think there is no obvious solution here. I think I'm pretty much at the conclusion that we should put a header in the template files below, and not change anything else. If the user wants to have the template system run on re-bundle, then they should simply remove the lock file before rebundling: rm /var/lib/ec2/ec2-defaults.ever If, for some reason they wanted to not re-run on the system that was being re-bundled on the next boot, then they could just: touch /var/lib/ec2/ec2-defaults. -- ec2-set-defaults should be 'run_once_per_ami' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/414997 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 414997] Re: ec2-set-defaults should be 'run_once_per_ami'
The issue with the above patches (comment 6 and comment 7) is that they possibly trump changes the user made that they intended to cross the re- bundling. If the user made the change with a tool, then they possibly wouldn't see the file and warning that was written in it. Such an example is that locale is changed/modified with 'update-locale' rather than by hand editing /etc/default/locale. I think the gist of all of this is that the template system is a more powerful system, and has good reason for existance. Not re-generating the modified files on every "first boot", means the user loses the power that the templating system gained us. As i pointed out, simply overwriting only if the file is different from the one you *would* write isn't sufficient, as it doesn't take into consideration the fact that the user is only able to write one file, while the template system outputs multiple based on environment conditions.

I'll make this argument one last time, then I promise to let it be. I believe that the correct fix for this bug is the attached patch below. What it does, is simply put comment headers in the files that are modified by ec2-set-defaults to inform the user that they should be modifying the template file if they want their changes to be carried through a re-bundle. The reasons I think this is the best approach are: a.) "by default" allows the user to take advantage of the run-time decisions that ec2-set-defaults is making. The example that I think of that doesn't fit "if the user changed this, then leave it be", is that if the user added a /etc/apt/sources.list entry, rebundles their' US region image with that change, and them publishes to EU region, they'll not use the EU region mirror. b.) documents to the user the behavior in a obvious place (the config file they're changing) c.) allows the user to ignore changes ec2-set-defaults would make (by removing the variables in the template) ** Attachment added: "inform the user that they should modify templates" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/32622886/bug414997-inform-user-of-templates.diff -- ec2-set-defaults should be 'run_once_per_ami' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/414997 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 438165] [NEW] apparmor profiles in are never deleted
Public bug reported: Files in /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-* are added whenever a machine is started, but they are never deleted. Over time, hundreds of unused files could accumulate in this directory. While /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-* are meant to be configurable by the user and shouldn't be simply deleted on boot, some mechanism for cleaning out the directory should exist. Ideally this should happen on undefine, but libvirt does not currently have a hook for the security driver on undefine (this can be added in karmic+1). The easiest solution would be to add a cron job to clean out old, undefined profiles. ** Affects: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Jamie Strandboge (jdstrand) Status: Triaged ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-9.10 ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Jamie Strandboge (jdstrand) -- apparmor profiles in are never deleted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438165 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 422138] Re: Slow memory leak, seen on two machines, appears to be dupe of 224945 even after -updates
Stefan, thanks for re-iterating the MaxRequestsPerChild tidbit, I had forgotten that option was for lifetime, not concurrency. That'll probably help workaround momentarily. Also, I am not currently doing any tweaking wrt the SSLSessionCache, I recall messing with it when I first started seeing this problem, but had removed the configuration options since it didn't seem to help much. I would just like to see some other pair of eyes confirm that a default install with SSL still leaks. This is apparent because when I run the same tests against the HTTP only port things look normal. -- Slow memory leak, seen on two machines, appears to be dupe of 224945 even after -updates https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/422138 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 414865] Re: mount.cifs does not handle umlauts in usernames correctly
Just in case anyone reads this and stumbles over the same error in gnome-vfs, I worked around it with the attached hack (it makes gnome-vfs not query hal for device names from /proc/mounts that start with two slashes). -- mount.cifs does not handle umlauts in usernames correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/414865 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 414865] Re: mount.cifs does not handle umlauts in usernames correctly
Hi, these options are already correct by default, as "testparm -v" says: unix charset is UTF8, dos charset is 850 and display charset is LOCALE. Since smbclient and gvfsd work just perfect with umlauts, I think the problem is either the kernel module or mount.cifs. Probably the kernel module, as the non-utf8-umlaut turns up in /proc/mounts (where it then causes gnomevfsd to fail to start, because it passes this data via dbus and then dbus seems to kill the connection, which is very bad).

Re: [Bug 433885] Re: installation of mysql-server and phpmyadmin failed while system under stress
For some reason mysql-server didn't want to install correctly. The system was under heavy stress while installing that package. I tried to reinstall mysql-server and that succeeded as it did for phpmyadmin as well.
