[Bug 468809] Re: Support adding custom debs from a local apt repository

2009-11-02 Thread Nick Barcet
Actually what you would have to do is:

1/ use the --copy option to copy your deb in the image
2/ use the --execscript to launch a script that
  * chroot $1
  * dpkg -i

Does not sounds like much tinkering to me, but agree that we could
consider this a wishlist item to allow for a --add-deb option. Not very
hard to implement, btw.

On the documentation chapter, both --copy and --execscript do appear
when I either do a 'man vmbuilder' or 'sudo vmbuilder kvm ubuntu
--help', so I do not really understand your remark.

Alissa, thanks a ton. You are a life-saver.
I'm a Linux newbie and wanted to setup a sample ldap server to test. It took me
the whole of today to stumble upon Alissa's post to get something working.
I'd very much like OpenLDAP to work out of the box. And documentation to
support the version of OpenLDAP that's released.

[Bug 468809] Re: Support adding custom debs from a local apt repository

2009-11-02 Thread Daniel Kulesz
Ok - I didn't know this option did exist (the documentation is
incomplete, but this has been already reported). The proposed solution
sounds better than my initial workaround thoughts, but still it sounds
like tinkering. I would have to script copying the files into the
filesystem, chrooting into it and then running dpkg for installing them.

Does it really makes sense to re-implement this? I mean, vm-builder does
already the same, just limited to packages available on the mirror.

[Bug 453441] Re: qemu-kvm should link against libcurl to be able to boot/stream off of http://..../*.iso

2009-11-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Martin, I've tested the package in karmic-proposed. Verifying this one
is *very* easy. I would appreciate it if someone else would try the
instructions in the description.

:-Dustin

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

qemu-kvm has the ability to boot off of a remote, http iso.

This is really, really useful, particularly when testing daily iso's, or
from a system like my laptop with a small SSD hard drive.

All we need to do to enable this is to build-depend on libcurl4-gnutls-
  dev.

  :-Dustin

  ===
  SRU Justification

This is truly a wishlist item, but absolutely trivial to fix, and very
high impact. This should significantly improve our developers',
testers', and users' abilities to test ISOs during the Lucid cycle. We
simple need to build-depend on a curl library. This will enable kvm to
  actually boot using -cdrom http://remote.host/path/to/image.iso,
streaming the ISO over a network connection. The impact is tremendous.
On systems with relatively small hard disks (SSDs, eg), it can be very
beneficial to save some disk space and stream ISOs. This should in no
way affect any other functionality. The risk of regression should be
  negligible.

  TEST CASE:
- * kvm -m 512 -cdrom
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu-releases/8.04.3/ubuntu-8.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso
+  * kvm -m 512 -cdrom
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu-releases/8.04.3/ubuntu-8.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso
+ Should boot to the graphical desktop. (Actually, you can stop if you see the
bootloader screen.)

Same error, any euca* command from the Node gets the same forbidden message.

All the other services work ok, both servers are able to ping each other.

Before the /etc/init.d/network restart on the cluster everything work
without any problem, please note, we installed everything in two other
servers (as cluster and node) everything worked perfect between cluster
and node, until the moment we run /etc/init.d/network restart on the
cluster, at this moment we started getting the same forbidden problem
again. This problem was replicated on our test environment.

That's not a confirmation, I'm demonstrating that checking the return value
with '&&' is sufficient to prevent the shell from exiting under set -e. So
no '|| true' is needed.

[Bug 471765] [NEW] Karmic: Desktop Host machine sound dies when guest is running sound

2009-11-02 Thread Andres E. Rodriguez Lazo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

Using: Karmic amd64

When running a Karmic Desktop Guest in a Karmic Desktop Host using KVM,
sound in the host dies.

Explained problem:

In a karmic Desktop amd64 host machine I installed a Karmic 32bit Guest.
When GDM starts (in the guest machine), it reproduces the sound it's
suppose to reproduce when Ubuntu is first loaded. Then, I try to play a
song in the Host machine (while the guest is running) but it gets stuck
and won't reproduce the song (using rythmbox). Once I power off the
guest machine, I can reproduce the song.

(I'll try to make a video showing this behaviour).

You can probably use the finish script option to copy your debs into the root
filesystem and then dpkg install them via a chroot.

[Bug 471660] [NEW] DHCP is very unreliable.

2009-11-02 Thread Andrew Walsh
Public bug reported:

I'm using a D-Link DWL-G122 USB wireless dongle with Karmic. I have
removed network manager (causes me all sorts of other problems), and am
configuring the network using the /etc/network/interfaces file. I find
that ubuntu is able to associate this wireless dongle with my access
point. However, it cannot reliably get a DHCP lease. After boot,
although the wireless is associated, attempting to ping the router
results in the message "network is unreachable" (or similar). If I run
the command /etc/init.d/networking restart, often dhcp fails to receive
a lease (although, sometimes the command works), with results as
follows:

and...@andrew-desktop:/etc/init.d$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

I have seen other people in forums with seemingly similar problems, and
they have suggested such things as stopping apparmor, which I have
tried, and it does not seem to make a whole lot of difference! They also
suggest adding a line:

pre-up sleep 10

after the line

iface wlan0 inet dhcp

in my /etc/network/interfaces file, but I'm not sure this make much
difference either.

Thanks,

Andrew Walsh.

How? Does an "euca-describe-availability-zones verbose" from the node

Is the network connectivity working correctly after the restart? Are the

[Bug 468809] Re: Support adding custom debs from a local apt repository

2009-11-02 Thread Daniel Kulesz
Exactly! The --addpkg switch just adds packages from the repositories,
which are specified by --mirror. Therefore only debs from official
repositories can be added.

Now when I have a package which is not available in any repository (a
custom deb), I didn't find a simple way to include it in the built VM,
except using one of those workarounds I mentioned. I even don't want to
setup an own, local apt repository? I just want to include a filename
(or path) in my local filesystem, and have the debs included from there.

[Bug 403381] Re: jaunty->karmic server upgrade results in two versions of postgresql installed

2009-11-02 Thread AiO
Just to help some people out who ended up in this situation (if you
"ignored" the debconf message):

I found a nice little example on how to repair this on
http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/server+administration .

1. Stop cluster for 8.4, if it’s running:

sudo pg_ctlcluster 8.4 main stop

2. Drop the cluster for 8.4

sudo pg_dropcluster 8.4 main

3. With 8.3 running, run pg_upgradecluster

sudo pg_upgradecluster -v 8.4 8.3 main

4. If all goes well, cluster for 8.3 can be dropped

sudo pg_dropcluster 8.3 main

And we are probably back on track with PostgreSQL.

[Bug 467521] Re: After a cluster network restart get EC2ResponseError: 403 Forbidden from nodes

2009-11-02 Thread migomez
Both cluster and nodes have been rebooted several times, as well as
trying euca-describe-availability-zones multiple times since the moment
it happened.

Even after rebooting and restarting services we keep getting:
r...@ubuntu2:~# euca-describe-availability-zones verbose
Warning: failed to parse error message from AWS: :1:0: syntax error
EC2ResponseError: 403 Forbidden
Failure: 403 Forbidden

To make sure it was not an error we made in a configuration file, we
installed both the cluster and the node in another server, made sure
everything worked, and performed the network restart again, and again,
we get the same problem when running commands from node to cluster (if
we run the command inside the cluster there is not error).

Thanks

[Bug 471512] [NEW] Slow cifs ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-02 Thread biebel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

Ubuntu 9.10
mount.cifs version: 1.12-3.4.0

Transfer speed over samba using CIFS/SMBFS has dropped severely since updating
to 9.10 (clean install).
I should be getting transfer speeds of +- 8 MiB/s, but I'm only getting +- 4
over CIFS.
As I still get the expected 8 MiB/s when copying via gnome (Places => Network)
and in windows, I'm quite sure it is a CIFS problem.
For some odd reason pushing files from the server to a shared folder on my main
computer used to go @ the full 10 MiB/s under 9.04. Now with 9.10 installed on
the server it won't go over 2 MiB/s.

I have tried many rsize= arguments, but every value I've tried only made
things worse.

Steps to reproduce:
Mount share using mount -t cifs
Copy file

Re: [Bug 463562] Re: libvirt-bin Karmic upgrade fails when invalid users exist in /etc/group

2009-11-02 Thread iMac
LDAP backend; Specifically MDS packages running on Debian Lenny.

Updated/Tweaked, but similar setup to:
http://www.howtoforge.com/mandriva-directory-server-on-debian-etch

Perhaps a change to how we manage sudoers (LDAP group vs local group) is
called for, though there is little we can do for users that tweak their
own configuration using the GUI (easy add to admin).

Re: [Bug 463562] Re: libvirt-bin Karmic upgrade fails when invalid users exist in /etc/group

2009-11-02 Thread iMac
Yes,

In this case the users are valid via LDAP, however the upgrade was being
completed when the LDAP was unavailable. It was not the libvirt group,
but the "admin" group as you noted. Once complete I re-added the users
to the admin group and authentication and authorizations via LDAP was
fine post-upgrade.

Perhaps this implementation is flawed, but it is a packaged MDS
implementation on Debian in the backend, and works well for mixed
Windows/Debian/Ubuntu environments where users and groups transcend many
different servers but have common home directory and authentication.

If you can beat NFS+LDAP for common desktops across linux/unix domains,
I am interested to know. Maybe Karmic+Eucalyptus is the end game, but
we have this for now.

Thanks for the patch,
cheers,
IMac

2009-11-02 Thread deadsven
I don't use openldap anymore. But if it helps, this is how the slapd was
setup originally. This was before intrepid. I just did a fresh
installation and added some lines to slapd.conf. This is from our
installation notes:

sudo apt-get install slapd ldap-utils
echo -e "\ndatabase hdb\nsuffix \"dc=api,dc=no\"\nrootdn
\"cn=Manager,dc=api,dc=no\"\nrootpw password" | sudo tee -a /etc/ldap/slapd.conf
sudo /etc/init.d/slapd restart

I did not remove the preconfigured "nodomain" entry, so I guess i had 2
databases, yes.

With the upgrade to intrepid, the slapd was converted to a new
configuration format. But I can't help with further details on the new
format.

[Bug 190359] Re: dhclient continually seeks ip address on unconnected interface

2009-11-02 Thread Joseph Reeves
I'm suffering this on 9.10, although I didn't on 9.04 and earlier. I
suppose, in fairness, I'm suffering this issue on a connected interface,
unlike the original reporter, although I think it's the same issue and
it causes problems for me:

I connect to a network with a DHCP server and run:

sudo dhclient eth0

and all works fine; I have an address and do what I want to do. Then I
move to a network without a dhcp server and run:

sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.blah.blah/24 && sudo ip ro add default via
192.168.blah.blah

And all works fine again; I'm connected to my new network and do what I
want to do. Until a few minutes later when (according to
/vat/log/syslog) the address is dropped and dhclient tries to acquire a
new one. It fails and I'm left unconnected. Running

sudo pkill dhclient

solves the problem. I have run this exact setup / procedures on 8.04,
8.10 and 9.04 without suffering this behavior from dhclient. It's
particularly annoying!

[Bug 458521] Re: kvm crash when using virtio for network, hardy guest

2009-11-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I just added a new task, triaged/high against hardy's linux kernel.

The Hardy linux kernel uses a backport of 2.6.25's virtio-net
implementation that causes this bug.

This virtio-net driver needs to be fixed such that hardy vm guests using
virtio-net doesn't truncate packets and crash hypervisors.

This appears to be fixed in virtio-net implementations later than
2.6.25, so I think we either need to sync this driver with a new
release, or cherry-pick the fixes that solve this.

Assigning to jj. Hopefully he can knock this out easily.

2009-11-02 Thread Alberto González Palomo
Yes, it's working perfectly again.

I'm concerned that this could be a symptom of some issue with the

I tried looking in the system logs, but I can't find any mention of ssh-askpass

Do you have any ideas about things I could check?

[Bug 463562] Re: libvirt-bin Karmic upgrade fails when invalid users exist in /etc/group

2009-11-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
So the attached patch would allow the package to upgrade/install. I'm
attaching it here in case this is what we need.

However, I think that we would just be hiding a problem under the rug.
As part of libvirt's package installation procedure, it needs to create
the libvirtd group, and add any admin users on the system to that group.
If your system's groups or users configuration is busted, libvirt's
packaging can't do what it needs to do.

Hence, I think this bug is invalid.
