[Bug 522509] [NEW] tftpd-hpa doesn't start on boot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tftp-hpa tftpd-hpa version: 5.0-11ubuntu1 tftpd-hpa doesn't start on boot for me: syslog.1:Feb 16 08:26:43 alkis in.tftpd[1399]: cannot resolve local IPv4 bind address: 0.0.0.0, Name or service not known But if I put a "sleep 30" on top of /etc/init.d/tftpd-hpa, then it does start. [Bug 522619] [NEW] libvirt launced kvm / qemu system processes run as root by default
Public bug reported: Upstream recommends to use default user:group = qemu:qemu >From http://libvirt.org/drvqemu.html In the "system" instance, libvirt releases from 0.7.0 onwards allow control over the user/group that the QEMU virtual machines are run as. A build of libvirt with no configuration parameters set will still run QEMU processes as root:root. It is possible to change this default by using the --with-qemu-user=$USERNAME and --with-qemu-group=$GROUPNAME arguments to 'configure' during build. [Bug 522619] Re: libvirt launced kvm / qemu system processes run as root by default
This is discussed extensively in /usr/share/doc/libvirt- bin/changelog.Debian.gz, but the bottom line is that in Ubuntu libvirt- managed qemu/kvm VMs are confined by a very restrictive AppArmor profile by default. This offers significantly greater protection than running these VMs as an unconfined non-root user. For users who desire the non- root functionality, libvirt in Ubuntu is compiled with the necessary options and users need only adjust the 'user' and 'group' options in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf. Of course, AppArmor confinement and running as non-root are not mutually exclusive, however it was deemed that the risk of regression with transitioning to the non-root setup for our upcoming LTS release was too great when compared to the small improvement in security when considering the default AppArmor confinement. This will likely be revisited in a future release of Ubuntu. ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged -- libvirt launced kvm / qemu system processes run as root by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

This isn't easily fixable in euca2ools. I'm moving this from euca2ools to boto, and subsequently will open a task against Eucalyptus. The real problem is in Eucalyptus putting 'n/a' as the value for volumeSize in returned data. We can either patch boto to work around the Eucalyptus bug, or fix the Eucalyptus bug. [Bug 522819] [NEW] Loosing connections with "Connection reset by peer" message
Public bug reported: lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.10 Release:9.10 ssh (openssh 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2) What should happen: I log into a remote host from my Ubuntu machine via ssh. That login should remain - the connection should be maintained, and I should be able to return to it later and type commands into the shell, see their output, etc. That is, the login shell should remain viable over time. What does happen: After some time - minutes to hours - the connection is lost, with an error message like: Read from remote host isildur: Connection reset by peer Connection to isildur closed. This is apparently at random. It does not happen to all the ssh logins at once. But it does happen to all of them eventually - and the connections are to many different machines, so I know its not a problem specific to a single remote host that I am ssh-ing into. Two of the remote machines I've seen this happen with are other machines I own and control, and they are on a local network merely 3 feet from the Ubuntu machine. Its clear that the problem lies with the Ubuntu machine. This is a new problem also - note that it only started recently - after the most recent update manager update of the Ubuntu box. I know this might not be a ssh bug, but rather a bug in the underlying networking infrastructure - but I don't know how to track it down. I've looked at all the log files in /var/log, and see no error messages that indicate why this is happening. I may have not given you enough info to solve this problem, but I need to be told how and where to collect further info - like where the applicable log file can be found. [Bug 522845] [NEW] compiling with libcap-ng disallows qemu/kvm access to files not owned by root when not using AppArmor
Public bug reported: libvirt in 10.04 is now compiled with libcap-ng. According to http://libvirt.org/drvqemu.html#securitycap this will affect QEMU/KVM access to files if libvirt is configured to launch VMs as root (the default in Ubuntu, see bug #522619 for why). From the libvirt.org page: "The Linux capability feature is thus aimed primarily at the scenario where the QEMU processes are running as root. In this case, before launching a QEMU virtual machine, libvirtd will use libcap-ng APIs to drop all process capabilities. It is important for administrators to note that this implies the QEMU process will only be able to access files owned by root, and not files owned by any other user." As it happens, the AppArmor security driver (which is enabled by default) disallows the SETPCAP capability, which is needed to drop these capabilities. As such, these capabilties is not dropped and libvirt behaves in much the same way as it would without being compiled with libcap-ng, like in previous releases of Ubuntu (this is not a security issue because the VM is confined by a restrictive AppArmor profile). This means that accesses VMs in $HOME still work. However (and this is where the potential problem is) if someone disables the AppArmor security driver or adds this capability to the AppArmor profile, then SETPCAP is available and any VMs that need access to disk files, etc not owned by root will break with the following in /var/log/libvirt/qemu/.log: qemu: could not open disk image /home/.../disk0.qcow2: Permission denied This could be a serious regression for people using QEMU/KVM without AppArmor. [Bug 522819] Re: Loosing connections with "Connection reset by peer" message
I have more info to add. This bug seems to involve wpa_supplicant. I have wpa_supplicant version 0.6.9-3ubuntu1 installed on the Ubuntu box in question. Internet traffic is over wired ethernet (eth0). ifconfig eth0 and route -n both report what one expects. However, I noticed wpa_supplicant was running. Why is wpa_supplicant running when the wireless device is not active? (I am using _only_ wired ethernet, eth0, at the moment). I noticed the following in /var/log/syslog : Feb 16 15:44:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:45:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:45:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:46:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:46:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:47:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:47:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:48:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:48:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:49:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:49:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:50:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:50:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE Feb 16 15:51:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS Feb 16 15:51:43 fingon wpa_supplicant[30855]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE ps -auxwww | grep wpa_supplicant yields: root 30855 0.0 0.0 28328 2676 ?S13:32 0:00 /sbin/wpa_supplicant -u -s So why is it running? I did a kill -9 30855, and that process died, but a new one was created (by NetworkManager ?) This happened each time I killed the current wpa_supplicant process, until I killed them in rapid succession (with many killall -9 wpa_supplicant). That does finally kill wpa_supplicant _without_ it getting immediately restarted, but now the NetworkManager icon is gone from the toolbar at the botton of the screen (however, a ps -auxwww | grep NetworkManager reveals it is still running). The network device, eth0, was shut down, and the route table flushed. So, I manually restarted eth0 with ifconfig, and recreated the route table. I had network access. I logged into other machines from the Ubuntu box in question, and the remote sessions did not die as before. So, getting rid of wpa_supplicant apparently solved one problem, but now NetworkManager is screwed - here is part of /var/log/messages: Feb 16 13:19:39 fingon kernel: [907935.419193] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::radio Feb 16 13:19:39 fingon kernel: [907935.419219] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::assoc Feb 16 13:19:39 fingon kernel: [907935.419242] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::RX Feb 16 13:19:39 fingon kernel: [907935.419262] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::TX Feb 16 13:19:39 fingon kernel: [907935.472428] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready Feb 16 13:19:40 fingon kernel: [907936.785985] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::radio Feb 16 13:19:40 fingon kernel: [907936.786016] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::assoc Feb 16 13:19:40 fingon kernel: [907936.786038] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::RX Feb 16 13:19:40 fingon kernel: [907936.786058] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::TX Feb 16 13:19:40 fingon kernel: [907936.861341] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready Feb 16 13:19:41 fingon kernel: [907937.769498] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::radio Feb 16 13:19:41 fingon kernel: [907937.769521] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::assoc Feb 16 13:19:41 fingon kernel: [907937.769543] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::RX Feb 16 13:19:41 fingon kernel: [907937.769568] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::TX Feb 16 13:19:41 fingon kernel: [907937.801600] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready Feb 16 13:19:42 fingon kernel: [907938.785864] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::radio Feb 16 13:19:42 fingon kernel: [907938.785889] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::assoc Feb 16 13:19:42 fingon kernel: [907938.785912] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::RX Feb 16 13:19:42 fingon kernel: [907938.785933] Registered led device: iwl-phy0::TX Feb 16 13:19:42 fingon kernel: [907938.841474] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready Feb 16 13:22:38 fingon kernel: [908114.272537] NetworkManager[1217]: segfault at 7fff296cfff8 ip 7f69b5ef23c1 sp 7fff296d error 6 in libc-2.10.1.so[7f69b5e7e000+166000] Feb 16 13:22:41 fingon kernel: [908117.232836] NetworkManager[29216]: segfault at 7fff0220bff8 ip 7f5d34ca5e34 sp 7fff0220c000 error 6 in libc-2.10.1.so[7f5d34c61000+166000] Feb 16 13:22:44 fingon kernel: [908120.299359] nm-applet[2273]: segfault at 50 ip 00420d47 sp 7fff1eda3070 error 4 in nm-applet[40+58000] Feb 16 13:25:18 fingon kernel: [908274.300044] usb 4-1: USB disconnect, address 21 Feb 16 13:27:26 fingon kernel: [908402.912478] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not rea
[Bug 444479] Re: missing apparmor access rule
I have experienced mysql failing to start for the last 2 months, after an Ubuntu upgrade, and this failure to start could be worked around by stopping apparmor. I have now added the line proposed in the original posting, and mysql now appears to start satisfactorily when apparmor is running. My experience therefore contradicts that of Juri Haberland in msg #13. In my experience this bug is a serious problem and the proposed fix works. -- missing apparmor access rule https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/79 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-dfsg-5.1 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 522819] Re: Loosing connections with "Connection reset by peer" message
Oh, one more thing. Normally the desk background shows a different Hubble (?) image, changing about every 10 or 15 minutes. That has stopped. Now its keeping the most recent background image - the image is not changing to the next in the sequence. [Bug 495394] Re: autostart almost always fails on boot time host
I too have come across this issue. In my case, it appears to be related to br0 (my bridge) not becoming live in time. As a temp solution, I found that simply adding a 'sleep 4' in the init script (just before it runs libvirtd) alleviates the issue. This gives the bridge enough time to become active. This is a total hack until some way to having it wait till the bridge is up appears and gets implemented. Attached are two snippets of /var/log/messages: 1. msgs1 - Standard behaviour. First VM tries to spawn, hanging for 30 secs and then gets destroyed. Subsequent VM's start successfully as the bridge is now active. 2. msgs2 - Behaviour if I add 'sleep 4' just before running libvirtd in /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin ** Attachment added: "msgs1" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/39289021/msgs1 -- autostart almost always fails on boot time host https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495394 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
