[Bug 369575] Re: Why is /usr/share/pam-configs/krb5 specifying minimum_uid= ?

2010-03-30 Thread Daniel Richard G.
You can see why I'm pushing on this. It's pay now, or pay later... no
real gain in waiting :-]

Ah, yes, users who've been dist-upgrading their Ubuntu installs since
Warty... I guess there's no such thing as "temporary" postinst logic, if
those need to be handled.

A warning wouldn't be so bad. The users who would see it are those who
are (1) dist-upgrading a distribution that (2) uses Kerberos
authentication. Which often occurs in (3) an institutional setting with
dedicated admins who can hand-hold/auto-script the change as needed. I
don't think so many would be affected, and of those who are, a large
part should be spoken for by their mother hens.

How did PAM-related packages manage changes to /etc/pam.d/* before pam-
auth-update came along? Yeah, automated editing is gauche, but it's not
like you just can't do *anything* in that sort of scenario...

The tricky part is coordination. At what point can libpam-krb5 drop the
minimum_uid setting and assume that it's in krb5.conf?

My concern with this is that I think this only affects a small set of
users of the packages, so I'm reluctant to bother the other ones. One has
to both have a mix of Kerberos-authenticated and non-Kerberos users,
distinguish by UID, and mind the silent Kerberos authentication failure
when handling the UNIX login.

What about just punting on upgrades altogether, and putting in the
rearranged config only on a new install? Could that be done with
appropriate postinst magic?

Alternately, you could pop up a big scary debconf warning... there's

Oh, sorry. I forgot the context. I even re-read the bug and missed
that. Apologies.

No, it's not a conffile. The generated /etc/pam.d files are configuration
files, but if the user is using the defaults, I believe changes to the
defaults are just automatically applied (although Steve would know better
than I). And krb5.conf normally isn't updated once written and I don't
think it could be updated with this particular type of change.

2010-03-30 Thread Daniel Richard G.
No no, the goal is not to have Kerberos users with uid < 1000. It's to
push minimum_uid higher, so that you can have normal 1000-something-uid
local users authenticate without any Kerberos interaction. Same argument
as for the root user and ignore_root.

As for doing the upgrade, isn't pam-configs/krb5 a conffile? The user
would see what's going on.

The current behavior does the correct thing if the UID allocation strategy
follows Debian policy, including for local users. That's what I mean by
not being convinced that the current behavior is wrong.

I realize there are sites that have UID allocation strategies that don't
follow the Debian guarantees about UID ranges and therefore need to use
lower UIDs due to historic allocations, although I'm surprised that those
sites would also be interested in using a stock PAM configuration (or, for
that matter, a stock krb5.conf).

You really don't want pam-krb5 to be willing to authenticate system users
just because you have a principal in your local realm named "daemon", and
krb5-config never touches an existing krb5.conf file when upgraded, which
makes me nervous about removing this setting from the default PAM
configuration. This is particularly true in Debian where those accounts
have valid shells by default.

I know this isn't a big deal in the larger scheme of things, but it's
the difference between being able to use the stock krb5 profile, and
having to maintain a custom one. (And remember, the current behavior
involves headaches if you have any non-root local users.)

Please bring this up with Sam when you get an opportunity

I haven't had a chance to discuss the idea with the other kerberos-configs

the current behavior is correct.

At the moment, therefore, I think it's unlikely there will be any changes

Same here,

As above 'sudo pam-auth-update' plus disabling winbind does the trick.

Re: [Bug 550409] Re: Slow disk IO for all guests with all disc modes and types.

2010-03-30 Thread Ben Selinger
This is the command used to start one of the affect Linux guests:
/usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 512 -smp 1 -name ubuntu -uuid
9de5914b-f448-cb8d-066f-ec51286c80c0 -chardev
socket,id=monitor,path=/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/ubuntu.monitor,server,nowait
-monitor chardev:monitor -boot c -drive
file=/datahauz/kvm/ubuntu.qemu,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2 -drive
if=ide,media=cdrom,index=2 -net
nic,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:56,vlan=0,name=nic.0 -net
tap,fd=39,vlan=0,name=tap.0 -chardev pty,id=serial0 -serial chardev:serial0
-parallel none -usb -vnc 127.0.0.1:0 -k en-us -vga cirrus

The SCP file transfers (Linux guest) were tested against both the guest disk
as well as guest /dev/shm. Pushing a file through the network stack to
/dev/shm was faster than pushing a file from the guest disc to shm. This at
least tells us that the guest machine is capable of dealing with greater
throughput than the disc. I just wanted to make sure the bottleneck was
confined to the disc.

FYI, the disc throughput on the Linux guests is poor, but it is at least
usable (though not in a production environment). The throughput on Windows
guests is 1/10th the speed.

For all tests, I verified results by at least two methods.
Under Windows guests, I performed file copies to/from guest disc, ftp
transfer of large files to the guest disc, and used IOmeter. All three
tests provided nearly identical results. ~2MBps R and ~2MBps W +/-500KBps.
Under Linux guests, I performed file copies to/from guest disc, scp transfer
of large files to/from the guest disc, and ran Bonnie++ (results follow). I
also created >2GB files using 'dd' from both /dev/zero and from /dev/mem.

[Bug 316974] Re: Mysql dead after update

2010-03-30 Thread David Park
Hi All,

I was wondering if a fix for this bug has been released? The status
indicates that a fix has been released. But I'm not sure how to get it.
I'm experiencing the same problem that @ekinsokmen reported. Any advice
on how to get the fix would be greatly appreciated!

[Bug 552067] [NEW] secure_chroot_dir in /var/run/vsftpd disappears each time the system is restarted

2010-03-30 Thread NicoBarbarian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vsftpd

Ubuntu version:
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

Version of the vsftpd package:
2.2.0-1ubuntu1

Description of the problem:

By default, in /etc/vsftpd.conf, the secure_chroot_dir option is set to
a directory inside /var/run/ (sorry I can't remember what is the actual
directory, I've changed the value in my own vsftpd configuration file).

Even if the directory is created by a post install script, it is deleted
each time the system is restarted on default ubuntu configuration since
/var/run is mounted as a tmpfs filesystem , i.e. is only existing in RAM
and thus is recreated at each startup.

A workaround I've found is to create a directory in any place which is not
mounted in a tmpfs filesystem
(By default, tmpfs are used for /dev /dev/shm /var/run /var/lock /lib/init/rw)

[Bug 549991] [NEW] Laptop fan isn't often sped up when CPU is hot

2010-03-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Don't know whose fault this is (BIOS or Ubuntu or Acer) but when the CPU
is under heavy load (e.g. Flash) it regularly goes to above 80C - which
shouldn't be happening, as the fan ought to kick in. Something along the
way is stopping this (whether it be the ACPI or the drivers). I have
noticed it especially on Lucid. In Karmic, when I tilt the laptop to the
right, the fan tends to go on more often, but this doesn't happen on
Lucid. The fan needs to be switched on perhaps above 40 or 50 C, but the
fact that it isn't kicking in above 80 (and Ubuntu regularly shuts down
because of it getting over 85) is worrying.

Laptop: Acer Aspire 5610
Processor: Core Duo T2300 (1.66Ghz x 2)

[Bug 522509] Re: [FFE] tftpd-hpa doesn't start on boot

2010-03-30 Thread Steve Langasek
Thanks, that looks better.

However, I just noticed that '--upstart-only' is the wrong thing to be
passing to dh_installinit here. You should only use --upstart-only for
upstart jobs that are *not* replacing an existing init script. In this
case, there's an existing init script of the same name, so you need to
omit --upstart-only in order to pull in the code that cleans up the old
init script for us automatically.

Other than that, FFe granted.

Using Scp means you're including the network stack in the benchmark. I'd
recommend to use a benchmark running in the guest only (like bonnie+) to test
the IO layer.

Could you also paste the command line used for benchmarking?

2010-03-30 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Daniele-

Can you test the vgabios I just posted in my PPA at:
 * https://edge.launchpad.net/~kirkland/+archive/ppa

This one reverts all of the changes and backs vgabios down to the
exact code that is in qemu's 0.12.3 release, but built against the
Ubuntu toolchain.

If you can confirm that this solves the issue for you, we can ask the
release team to grant an exception to accept an upload that
"downgrades" the vgabios version in the Lucid Archive.

Thanks for you reply, Mathias!

I think that closing bug I reported it's not your good decision. Ubuntu
still supports previous releases and IMHO that bug should be fixed there too,
because it's very important for all mail servers using old Spamassassin.

Do you still remember Y2010 problem in Spamassassin? Ubuntu fixed
FH_DATE_PAST_20XX test for Spamassassin in Karmic and Jaunty, because
it could create a lot of false positives. The open-whois.org rules are
false positives too. IMHO there are similar issues.

I don't need a fix for that bug now. I've just removed the
open-whois.org rules on my servers where Spamassassin is running. But I
wanted to help also another Ubuntu admins. I can imagine that some of
them don't know about that problem at all.

Also, vde networking will not work with Lucid's kvm. To use vde
networking, we'd need to build qemu-kvm with libvde2, which we cannot
do because it's in Universe.

Please consider using one of the other more secure, officially

[Bug 551778] Re: CCs or SCs cannot be deregistered

2010-03-30 Thread Daniel Nurmi
Thierry,

It looks as if this may be a documentation bug: --deregister-cluster and
--deregister-sc takes the 'name' of the cluster, instead of the 'host'
of the component. I just tested with using the cluster name in both
cases, and de-registration is working. However, there are a few issues:

1.) euca_conf --help shows this:

   --deregister-cluster remove cluster from EUCALYPTUS
   --deregister-scremove storage controller from EUCALYPTUS

which is correct for 'cluster', but not for 'sc'. I'll make this fix
and commit to 1.6.2 shortly. The second is what to do in the case where
a user inputs an IP instead of a name. The reason you're seeing
'success' is that de-registration is idempotent (i.e. when you de-
register a cluster named '192.168.1.1', the system will return 'success'
if, after the operation is performed, there is no cluster named
'192.168.1.1' registered with the CLC). It may be worth putting in a
warning if the string that is passed to euca_conf looks like an IP
address, telling the user that they probably didn't mean to put in an IP
(though, one can use such a string as the name of a cluster).

Thoughts?

-Dan

Re: [Bug 464418] Re: Official UEC image fails to boot

2010-03-30 Thread Scott Moser

You definitely do not want 'instance'. Instance is the thing running
inside the cloud. (Ie, this would help you get package selection for a
"image" to run in a VM inside the cloud).

> system that would boot, but fail to mount its root file system. I

Sorry for the lost time. KVM is definitely the "supported path".

While I would not expect you to fail where you did, the UEC Images will
not function correctly in any mode without a metadata service (ie, STATIC
or SYSTEM) (http://open.eucalyptus.com/wiki/EucalyptusNetworking_v1.5.2)

The images are built to obtain information about themselves from the
metadata service, and will not function if it is not present.

Another thing to note, is that images for ec2/Eucalyptus will expect to
find a root filesystem at /dev/sda1 , not at /dev/sda. If you just boot
an image in kvm with '-hda disk.img' you will quite likely fail with "can't
find root" as the /etc/fstab will be expecting /dev/sda1 and you will have
presented a partition image as a disk. Eucalyptus takes the partition
image and turns it into a "full disk" with a partition table.

I believe the problems you're running into (at this point at least) are
more with eucalyptus configuration than with the images themselves.

[Bug 551545] Re: PXE netboot not booting localboot from virtio-disk

2010-03-30 Thread Christian Roessner
By the way: PXELinux ignores timeout, if prompt is set. So this seems to
be a second bug (this worked on karmic).

[Bug 551545] Re: PXE netboot not booting localboot from virtio-disk

2010-03-30 Thread Christian Roessner
Directly from the manpage:

-boot [order=drives][,once=drives][,menu=on|off]
Specify boot order drives as a string of drive letters. Valid drive
letters depend on the target achitecture. The x86 PC uses: a, b (floppy 1 and
   2), c (first hard disk), d (first CD-ROM), n-p (Etherboot from
network adapter 1-4), hard disk boot is the default. To apply a particular boot
order only on the first startup, specify it via once.

Interactive boot menus/prompts can be enabled via menu=on as
far as firmware/BIOS supports them. The default is non-interactive boot.

   # try to boot from network first, then from hard disk
   qemu -boot order=nc

So this should work?? Don't know. Even does not work with not specifying
if=virtio.
