[Bug 456806] Re: mountall vomits a shell onto virtual console when you run vi
I've just come across this bug. I have the following setup. /dev/md0 is a 4 disk RAID1 array (/dev/sda1 to sdd1) mounted on /. /dev/sda2 to /dev/sde2 are all swap partitions (sde2 is on the spare disk). In fstab all swap partitions use options sw,pri=1,ifexists. I don't think the ifexists option is having any affect. /dev/md1 is a 4 disk RAID5 array (/dev/sda3 to sdd3)with 1 spare (sde3) mounted on /home. When I tested a disk failure by disconnecting sda, the RAID arrays all worked fine, but I started getting errors about the swap partition on sda2 not being there. Then I got to experience the nasty effects that mountall has on nano...(same as described on vim above) and the console. Interestingly, a second console opened with ctl-alt-f2 is not affected. It appears to me that mountall spews when it can't mount sda2 as if it is using swapon -a instead of swapon -a -e, which is what I am trying to achieve with the ifexists option in fstab. I don't know how to pass the swapon -e option to mountall or even if it is possible, but it would at least solve part of the problem if it was. -- mountall vomits a shell onto virtual console when you run vi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 448674] Re: VM is suspended after live migrate in Karmic
Mark, I understand your frustration, however keep in mind that the final week before Release will only have the highest impact bug fixes to reduce the chance of regression in the final release. Bugs are deferred to '-updates' all the time in the week(s) prior to release for exactly this reason. Also note that the bug is fixed in Lucid (or should be), so there was progress on this bug. The question is whether to fix a previous release, which was discussed before. Rather than hoping Lucid is fixed, I highly recommend trying Lucid out and confirming this is fixed and report any other bugs you might find. While I do not recommend running the development release on a production machine at this time, Beta-2 is next week and the focus of development at this point in the cycle is stability and bug fixes. If there are bugs in Lucid, now is the best time to report them so we can get them fixed. -- VM is suspended after live migrate in Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/448674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Jamie, This bug was originally defined on 10-13-2009 the release of Karmic was on 10-29-2009 This should have been fixed. It was confirmed on 10-20-2009 and again on 10-29-2009. Then marked as medium imporantance and confirmed. I understand that you don't want to fix it so I will now wait a month and see if it is in lucid correctly. Remember that the change from Alpha 2 to alpha3 broke it again. Now beta1 breaks pacemaker+openais/heartbeat hope everything is included in beta2 and the RC when it comes out. Status of this right now is that it is broken and will not be fixed. I will get the current version of libvirt and build my own packages from source as I had to do 5 years ago. >From IRC from #ubuntu-server (excerpted): 09:36 < jdstrand> kirkland, smoser: in the past, libvirt created a new scsi controller for every new device. this was a pci add which is why it showed up magically 09:37 < jdstrand> kirkland, smoser: this is incorrect behavior and now libvirt adds disks to an existing bus, like what would happen in the real world 09:39 < jdstrand> smoser: also, aligouri (upstream qemu) reiterated that we should not be using scsi hot add 09:47 < jdstrand> smoser: virtio hot add stills works 09:43 < smoser> it will absolutely break guests if devices don't "just show up" 09:48 < jdstrand> smoser: of course, kirkland mentioned euco is resistent to vd* devices 10:05 < jdstrand> kirkland, smoser: so the decision comes down to: do we stick with the old 0.7.5, lose the bug fixes but maintain deprecated scsi behavior and not touch euca for an LTS, or move to the new 0.7.7 with its fixes, but new scsi behavior and updating euca 10:11 < smoser> the primary one, in my opinion, is that EBS (the functionality exposed by attach/detach) is supposed to promise that your data is SAFE 10:11 < smoser> and as we know, with buggy scsi, that is probably not the case. 10:13 < smoser> i'm open to a tested virtio solution because it is the "accepted solution" for hotplug 10:15 < jdstrand> I'm betting you will see a performance gain over scsi as well 10:15 < kirkland> jdstrand: oh, the performance gain is huge 10:16 < kirkland> jdstrand: we're going to insist on it [Ed. virtio] for lucid+1 10:20 < smoser> kirkland, jdstrand i think, for maintainability that this is probably somethign worth testing So bottom line, for stability, integrity, maintainability and performance reasons, kirkland and smoser will test virtio attach and decide if it is worth pursuing. As it turns out, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=578975 is not a bug, but it is a functional regression. From the upstream bug: 09:07 < aliguori> jdstrand, you're adding a scsi disk to an existing scsi adapter 09:07 < aliguori> lspci isn't going to change 09:07 < aliguori> but you won't see anything in /proc/partitions until you rescan the scsi bus 09:07 < aliguori> which is not something that happens automatically 09:07 < aliguori> it's *not* pci hot add 09:08 < aliguori> it's scsi hot add 09:08 < aliguori> http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-3942 09:08 < aliguori> this is different than what older libvirts did 09:08 < aliguori> older libvirt added a new scsi controller for every disk add 09:08 < aliguori> which was incorrect 09:14 < jdstrand> aliguori: I'm just used to seeing this show up in the guest, so the new behavior, while I understand it, needs to be dealt with in applications that depended on the previously faulty behavior 09:14 < aliguori> yup So, after using attach-device, I perform the following: echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan Then the disk shows up in the disk. ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #578975 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=578975 -- [lucid] merge libvirt to 0.7.7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Mark , I fully agree. It should be fixed in Karmic. I'm not going to use Lucid in production for the next 3-4 months. It has to prove to be stable first. Is it so hard to fix this bug? Probably it's not high on the list to be fixed.

I just setup a lucid beta server, and can confirm that this has been fixed in lucid. Disable Winbin NT/AD authentication by running: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow libpam-runtime ... worked for me. Pretty show stopping bug! [Bug 553737] Re: [lucid] merge libvirt to 0.7.7
** Description changed: For LTS support and tons of bugfixes, it would be good to merge libvirt 0.7.7 to Lucid. This is a placeholder bug and is being discussed and evaluated by the server team (in ubuntu-server mailing list), particularly Dustin Kirkland. There are mainly two problems so far: - 1. scsi attach is broken due to moving to device_add. These changes could be backed out with some work or upstream could patch it soon and we cherrypick it. This is a blocker because it breaks eucalyptus volume attachment. + 1. scsi attach is broken due to moving to device_add. These changes could be backed out with some work or upstream could patch it soon and we cherrypick it. This is a blocker because it breaks eucalyptus volume attachment. This is upstream bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=578975. 2. 0.7.7 uses a stacked security driver which means the DAC security driver is on by default and changes the permissions of the files it uses to that of the user running qemu. On Ubuntu this is root. This may be unexpected behavior for people who store images outside of /var/lib. This only happens with qemu:///system. '2' we can live with, but '1' is a blocker. -- [lucid] merge libvirt to 0.7.7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 448674] Re: VM is suspended after live migrate in Karmic
Well Question then? Karmic is to be supported for another year, correct? This is a bug with karmic correct? the workaround is to suspend and then resume the vm this removes live migration from the mix if I have to do the suspend and resume. Why not just backport libvirt-0.7.2 from the version of lucid that was working to karmic so that live migration works as advertised? Lucid is still at beta 1 while I will try it for you it is not usable in production because to much of the pacemaker utilities are not in the lucid release at this time requiring ppa's to be installed for fully functional systems. Weather the bug meets the SRU is not the question the question is we have a bug on a system that redhat released the patches for months ago and it was not fixed on a ubuntu release that is to be supported for another year. This needs fixed as not everyone will install lucid the day it is released. I enjoy working with ubuntu and this is a problem that must be corrected before the release of lucid on the karmic platform. Unless you have a full workaround that does not require someone connecting and suspending and resuming the migrated VM then it is not a valid workaround. we need the vm to migrate without human intervention Thank You P.S. the lucid beta 1 is being installed as we speak on a set of test boxes to attempt the test. However, as I stated above not all of the pacemaker+openais/heartbeat packages are in the beta release so it is not even a valid environment to run any thing on at this time.
