tl;dr i wonder what information you miss... 1, a folder structure with short filenames/foldernames and a dot on their ends but no ms-dos "extension" (eg.: "123.", "folder.", etc. see a cyrus imap maildir structure.) is shared via samba (see config file). the underlying file system was ext4. the filenames showed correct on the linux server. this was also working fine with ubuntu 8.04. 2. i expected the filenames to be the same on the mounted share when looked from under windows 7. 3. however, these short filenames (and only these!) showed up as random characters. i tried copying them, the names were wrong. also tried ftp, names were correct. i can not reproduce this anymore as i wiped 10.04 completely, and switched back to 8.04. bye -- samba filenames wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet
Following your guidelines, I think I understand better how nmbd is behaving. nmbd is started after a user logs in, and if the network-manager is running. In fact, as I'm setting a server, I configured the Wifi so that it could connect with wpa_supplicant at the end of boot, but I did not use the network-manager for that (I used wpa_supplicant with configuration file). Bad idea, as there seems to be some logic between network-manager and nmbd. nmbd starts when a net I/F goes up in this case. And I need to have Wifi and nmbd running, even if no one is logged in. So probably will have to cope with the network-manager, and see how I can configure Wifi (maybe with wpa_cli ?) to set the wlan interface through the network-manager. In this case, I hope seeing nmbd start automatically when the wifi interface comes up, as when a user logs into Gnome. [Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet
Right, let me precise a bit more what I’m doing. I have a home network with various W$ and Ubuntu PCs + a Mandriva (2007) server. This server is used for sharing files, printing, scanning, photo/videos web pages, ssh… Due to variety of OSes, file sharing between W$ PCs and this server uses SMB (Ubuntu PCs use mostly ssh folders). Samba is installed on the server, the Mandriva (and formerly Mandrake) configuration is very close to what explained in the “Using Samba” book: Both nmbd and smbd daemons are started at boot time. Now, with Ubuntu, here is what I get, with standard nmbd and smbd conf files : - At boot time : only smbd started. - nmbd must be started manually or samba restarted when network is up to have nmbd + smbd operational. - If only smbd is running, file sharing on the server is *not* working: the server is visible from the PCs, but impossible to enter workgroup or shares (they are not visible). - If nmbd (and smbd) started, then SMB/Samba file sharing works at 100% As I explain, due to Wifi, network will come up only after boot (and after nmbd start). Having smbd running without nmbd is useless, at least, in my case. I don't understand exactly, why we do not start nmbd, even if no network avail: Other daemons using the network *are* started at boot (e.g., ntpd, sshd, ...) even if no network is available. -- nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462169 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 581808] [NEW] No 2.4 compatibility package for bacula-client
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bacula Bacula has changed its network protocol from 2.4 to 5.0. This means that a client upgrading to Lucid breaks if the backup server still runs 2.4. Since upgrading the server simultaneously usually isn't an option (in my case it doesn't even run Ubuntu or any Debian derivate), there should be a compatible bacula-client package available (called bacula-client-2, perhaps) in Ubuntu for quite some time. Maybe there should be a corresponding bacula-server-2 package for the reverse case too, but that might not be really necessary since the Bacula developers claim that a 5.0 server can use a 2.4 fd client. [Bug 581718] Re: dovecot upgrade purposely breaks working configuration
I'm using absolute path. The problem is that the path was given by LDAP with : user_attrs = mailbox=home (this is what is recommended in the documentation) It seems that, for whatever reason this string is passed directly to the code and used as "home". But because it starts with "maildir:", it fails the test "first character is /". The workaround so far was to disable mailbox from ldap and use directly mail_location = maildir:/home/mail/%u I've seen a similar symptom on dovecot mailing list and the dev reply something like "this is wrong, remove the maildir:". It's really a pitty because a lot of usecases are now broken because of a poor implementation of one very specific test. Hi, chuck What do you mean? Mysql root password is not empty. Should i put it somewhere? I've read on the ubuntu forum that it's actually a problem with mysql upstart script.. So at first i was doing "sudo -u mysql mysqld" after each boot, then i copied an init.d script from an other machine.
