[Bug 666682] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2010-11-03 Thread Torben S . Sørensen
Hi again,

The problem is solved. It turned out, that the password for the
"debian-sys-maint" user in mysql was not equal to the one in the
/etc/mysql/debian.cnf file. (I have no idea why not - I don't usually
mess with this user)

Sorry for the inconvience.

/Torben

[Bug 670289] [NEW] Laptop won't shut down with rabbitmq running

2010-11-03 Thread Jonathan Lange
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rabbitmq-server

My laptop won't shut down when the rabbitmq server is running. I can shut down
the rabbitmq-server like this:
j...@truth:/etc/init.d$ sudo /etc/init.d/rabbitmq-server stop
Stopping rabbitmq-server: rabbitmq-server.

I've yet to do the rebooting experiments necessary to prove that I can
shutdown after stopping the rabbitmq-server.

Many other Launchpad developers have pointed out this problem, and I
suspect bug 660460 was filed partly with the intent of requesting a
workaround.

AFAICT, this seems to only affect Maverick.

[Bug 666383] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 failed to install/upgrade: [SRU] infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running

2010-11-03 Thread IAmDaveMyers
Can confirm that a install from source works fine (following instruction
on the MySQL site / docs)

Only bother is that when moving the automatic startup script into
/etc/init.d/ I get a warning about the job now being in upstart, will
this cause me any problems?

Question is, how do the scripts differ?

I understand that at the start there is a 'loop' that waits for the
network interface to come up, and a few other things.

I believe that the Mysql server startup script doesn't run until the
system reaches 'run level 3'.

I'm not fully conversant with the use of upstart (but I do understand
the idea). If there is any further info I can give I will be happy to
help.

ps. I am also available to do an install from an RPM - if there is an
'upstart' version being packaged.

Also as this seems to be a 'regression' I am happy to try the 'old' .deb
installers so see which one of worked, eliminating untill we find where
we all got it so horribly wrong, but I only seem able to find the
'current' version.

[Bug 667841] Re: some virtual machines hang upon boot with maverick kernel on lucid host

2010-11-03 Thread Darren Davison
confirmed for me.. after upgrading host machine from Lucid to Maverick
(Linux davisond-laptop 2.6.35-22-generic-pae #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16
22:16:51 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux), none of my Lucid or Hardy VM guests
will boot, each hangs after grub stage 2 with "Starting..." on the
console while the host CPU runs at 100% until the VM is "Forced off".

Running non-Ubuntu VM guests on a maverick host seems to be OK (tried an
OpenSUSE and an IPCop image).

Cloning an existing Lucid VM makes no difference, the cloned guest
displays the same problem.

Creating a new Lucid guest on the maverick host works (successfully
installs from .iso media) but booting it causes it to hang BEFORE
loading grub at all (with the single "_" ) in the corner of the screen.

Note that all of the above uses disk images created with qemu's "raw"
format. Converting the image type from raw to qcow2 makes no difference
(hangs at same point) and creating a new Lucid guest with a qcow2 backed
image shows the same behaviour as creating a new guest with a raw image
disk (hangs before grub loads). So it seems not to be image format
related.

This is a blocker for me, I have to revert my host machine back to Lucid
as I need to run those VMs. :( I would say the importance is higher
than "medium".

Try killing all the virtual machines, restarting apparmour and then
libvirt, then start the virtual machines one at a time.

[Bug 667700] Re: Simple MySQL queries return wrong result after update from 5.1.41 (10.04, Lucid Lynx) to 5.1.49 (10.10, Maverick Meerkat)

I just have to ask about the importance being defined as "Low" here.

MySQL is a SQL database engine that is in widespread use. The version
distributed with Maverick Meerkat has been proved to return false
results for even simple queries. Would distributing a corrupt
filesystem driver also be considered of "Low" importance?

[Bug 569394] Re: Can't use kvm -curses with virtual or ec2 kernels

2010-11-03 Thread Scott Moser
I believe this is fix-released in maverick. I use -curses when booting
the uec images under kvm. At most, to make it work you have to
blacklist vga16fb.

That path *does* append to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf before upstart runs.
It adds the following:
blacklist vga16fb

[Bug 632554] Re: tomcat fails to start with: /bin/bash already running.

2010-11-03 Thread gerry skerbitz
I'm struck by this bug because I have the tomcat user doing something
else related to tomcat, so it MIGHT actually be logged in.

It strikes me as a bad idea to let a startup script create a file in
/etc/init.d/. We should find a better way to clarify that it's actually a
tomcat instance running rather than just any old login.
catalina.sh isn't making the decision; start-stop-daemon is.

I'm going to work on it. Ideas are welcome.

[Bug 578922] Re: mysql configuration should be adjusted to help prevent against chained attacks against LAMP stack

2010-11-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
SRU Justification (apparmor)

1. impact of the bug is medium for stable releases. While no
applications shipped in Ubuntu are directly affected by this, it would
be good if our LTS release provided a more secure user-tmp abstraction
for people deploying new profiles on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

2. This has been addressed during the maverick development cycle.

3. Patch is small. It places 'owner' in front of /tmp/** and /var/tmp/**
as well as requiring 'owner' for @{HOME}/tmp/ and its files and
subdirectories.

4. TEST CASE:
$ cp /usr/share/example-content/Kubuntu_leaflet.jpg /tmp
$ sudo chown root:root /tmp/Kubuntu_leaflet.jpg
$ sudo aa-enforce /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox
$ firefox /tmp/Kubuntu_leaflet.jpg

At this point, firefox will not display the image and something like the
following should be in dmesg:
[ 1298.220693] type=1503 audit(1288797298.697:138): operation="open" pid=2948
parent=2944 profile="/usr/lib/firefox-3.6.12/firefox-*bin" requested_mask="::r"
denied_mask="::r" fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name="/tmp/Kubuntu_leaflet.jpg"

5. This will regress if a confined application tries to access files
owned by another user in /tmp (indeed, that is the protection we want ;)
and when someone confines two different applications that a) run under
differing user ids and b) interact with each other by one writing to
/tmp and the other reading that file from /tmp. I imagine that there are
very few users who would be affected by this. On the desktop, the evince
profile is affected at all by this change because it explicitly allows
read access to any files with an extension that it has support for.
Firefox's profile is disabled by default.

This is a change requiring the most testing and thought. I maintain it
is an important proactive fix for Lucid. It has been in maverick for
several months with no reported regressions once we decided on the right
approach. Once in -proposed, I plan to run the QRT tests on all AppArmor
confined applications in Lucid to verify no regressions.

  Binary package hint: apparmor

I have reported this to the CERT/Bugtraq system so you may have been
contacted by them. It was a large bug report so something may have
  fallen though the cracks.

The problem is AppArmor rule sets do not adequately protect a LAMP
environment from attacks. Exploit code has been written which bypasses
AppAmoror rule sets to obtain remote code execution. The exploit can
  be obtained here (https://sitewat.ch/Exploits/nuke_exploit.txt).

  The attack scenario:
Back before AppArmor it was common to see sql injection attacks against
PHP/MySQL like this:
  Vulnerable code:

  Exploit:
  http://localhost/sql_inj.php?id=0 union select "" into
outfile "/var/www/backdoor.php"

AppArmor stops this attack, which is impressive. However, there is a
flaw in this security system. In my exploit i am dropping the file in
"/tmp/theme.php" then i use a Local File Include vulnerability (LFI) to
execute this php file. The problem is that BOTH MySQL and Apache have
access to /tmp/. The line "#include " in the
usr.sbin.mysqld is the source of the vulnerability. The patch is very
simple, mysql should have its own tmp folder that only the mysqld
  process has access to.

This whole concept of process separation to prevent attacks is
completely undermined by creating "unions" between processes in the
form of these header files. In fact every time you see an #include in an
app armor rule set, its a point of weakness.I hope to give a
another killer blackhat/defcon talk, this time i am talking about about
my exploit and these abuses against apparmor.

  Thanks,
  Michael Brooks.

[Bug 668692] Re: package postfix 2.7.0-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-11-03 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello larkguit, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report
and help us make Ubuntu better!

I believe this may be a transient error. This error message implies that
the group database may have been locked:

Adding group `postfix' (GID 133) ...
groupadd: cannot lock /etc/group; try again later.
addgroup: `/usr/sbin/groupadd -g 133 postfix' returned error code 10. Exiting.

Its likely that this will not occur if you attempt the update again.

If it does, you may want to try rebooting, of if that is not an option,
try to find the process that has the file locked. You can use the
'fuser' command like this:

$ sudo fuser -vu /var/log/messages
[sudo] password for clint:
 USERPID ACCESS COMMAND
/var/log/messages: syslog 929 F (syslog)rsyslogd

Only replace '/var/log/messages' with '/etc/group'

Closing as Invalid. If you do find that the file is not locked and the
error continues, please feel free to reopen this bug report.

I also tried a maverick guest in the maverick host. Same problem.
Looks to be a serious bug in the maverick libvirt/kvm stack somewhere.
Odd that it will run non-ubuntu based kernels without any problem.

Anything further I can do or provide to help someone

[Bug 670541] [NEW] Upgrade mysql5.0 -> 5.1 fails due to error on postrm script.

2010-11-03 Thread Mark - Syminet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.1

Hardy -> Lucid upgrade, after which phpmyadmin warns about mysql-server5.0
whereas
the php library is 5.1 and thus conflicts. OK, lets upgrade - but mysql
upgrade fails due to
what looks like a typo in the postrm script:

===
Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ... 40610 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing mysql-server-5.0 ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   ...done.
/var/lib/dpkg/info/mysql-server-5.0.postrm: line 38: syntax error near
unexpected token `fi'
dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.0 (--remove):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2
Removing mysql-client-5.0 ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
 mysql-server-5.0
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
r...@28r6s1:/etc/apache#
===

For me, the quick fix was to edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/mysql-server-5.0.postrm
shellscript and simply make this the first line:

exit 0;

...hopefully this didn't cause some sort of breakage that will bite us at
some indeterminable point in the future. But it at least got the critical
mysql service running again on that server.

[Bug 667269] Re: winbind crashes

2010-11-03 Thread gmoore777
from my original post, I want to strike that there is a core file. Since
then I have looked for a core file when the problem happens, and it is
not there. So don't waste time debugging the attached core file.

In regards to errr's note above, maybe why it is quick for him/her to fix, is
that they are not using ActiveDirectory/LDAP
and I am, and there is some time out period, and # of retries that "something"
tries to do, hence why it takes about
2 1/2 minutes (5 tries of 30 second wait times each, maybe?) for me to get any
command to complete.

Restarting winbindd, does not always work (possibly never works). Well it may
seem that it works, but there are
still old winbindd processes still hanging around. Hence why my protocol is to
`kill -9` the windbindd processes first.
Then, restarting winbind via: `sudo /etc/init.d/winbind restart`

Same as errr's comment above, that there is nothing in the log.winbindd file,
except:

I have removed this package in order to avoid the error messages coming

Package installations shouldn't require any form of user intervention
until the point local customization is needed. I'll be installing

[Bug 653405] Re: package rabbitmq-server 1.7.2-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-11-03 Thread Brian Merritt
I figured out that this failure mode happens when the hostname of the
server/node/instance that you're installing on is not resolvable. Simply
adding the hostname to /etc/hosts (or DNS, etc.) will resolve this
issue.

[Bug 669514] Re: package rabbitmq-server 1.7.2-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-11-03 Thread Brian Merritt

This issue is likely caused by a failure to resolve the hostname of the
instance/server you're installing on. I ran into it when attempting to
install rabbitmq-server on an EC2 host with a temporary hostname that
did not resolve. Adding the hostname to /etc/hosts solved the issue.

[Bug 666180] Re: KVM does not boot Ubuntu i386 10.04 minimal server images

2010-11-03 Thread Harald Hannelius
Apparmor doesn't seem to be the culprit for me. virt-manager show me the
dynamic allocation of an UUID when starting the guest and I have no
errors in syslog regarding apparmor.

The guest just stops just after loading the first stage of the
bootloader. This affects my ubuntu 10.10 guest, as well as my Windows Xp
SP3 guest. The XP-guest does boot into safe mode, and safe mode with
networking though.
