[Bug 697676] Re: ntp wakes once per second [was: ntp kills polar bears]

2011-01-18 Thread Serge Hallyn
The Debian ntp package maintainers would like a patch to go into the
upstream project, and will not take this patch. Given the invasiveness
of the patch, Ubuntu will likewise wait for a proper fix from upstream.
Please feel free to take the issue up with upstream. Since the Debian
maintainers point out that it has been 2 years, it definately may be
worth trying again.

[Bug 697676] Re: ntp kills polar bears

2011-01-18 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Hi Cristian,

Thank you very much for bringing this patch to our attention. It is,
indeed, quite interesting, and I, too, very much have an interest in the
Ubuntu's server's energy efficiency.

There is an issue, here, though, in that ntp is an absolutely
fundamental package found on most Ubuntu desktops and servers. The
patch from Fedora, although vetted by Fedora users, is non-trivial.
Quite the opposite, it's pretty involved and intricate. Given the
nature of ntp in Ubuntu, I advise that we work with Debian on this
issue. It would be best for both Debian and Ubuntu users to keep this
package as close as possible between Debian/Ubuntu.

Cheers,
Dustin

[Bug 667793] Re: euca-bundle-vol/ec2-bundle-vol should copy filesystem label

2011-01-18 Thread Michael David Joy
If one adds:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu $codename-proposed restricted main
multiverse universe

To the config template: /etc/cloud/templates/sources.list.tmpl

Then: rm -f /var/lib/cloud/sem/apt*
cloud-init-cfg- apt-update-upgrade
apt-get -y update

You're in business with the fix. Notice that this will install all
proposed updates (and is not necessarily recommended).

[Bug 341817] Re: dhcpd wont start due to rndc.key permissions

2011-01-18 Thread Thomas Schweikle
I've tested again:

group bind has users: dhcpd
group dhcpd has users: bind

apparmor.d/usr.sbin.named
apparmor.d/usr.sbin.dhcpd3
both have a line:
/etc/bind/** r, -> apparmor allows them to read the file.

/etc/bind is owned by bind:bind, rwxrwx---
/etc/bind/rndc.key is owned by bind:bind, rw-r- -> named fails to read the
file, dhcpd fails to read the file

/etc/bind/rndc.key is owned by bind:bind, rw-r--r-- -> (bad idea but:
named can read the file, dhcpd can read the file).

I'd say: at the point in time named, dhcpd try to read the file they are
running user bind (named), user dhcpd (dhcpd3) but not the required group!
Or: named and dhcpd try to open the file rw, failing because only reading is
allowed.

[Bug 704509] Re: syslog logging is broken in natty

2011-01-18 Thread Scott Moser
In my natty instance, /var/log/cloud-init.log was owned by root:root.
In the maverick instance, it is owned by syslog:adm.

I'm not sure what would have changed this. It seems I may need to
create the file with proper permissions on package install.

Ran netstat and came up negative. However, the system had been rebooted
in the interim.

Pretty sure that clamav was installed from same source. But it has been
a couple of years since I originally installed on this box. I am
currently away from this machine and won't have access to it again for a
couple of weeks.

[Bug 704509] [NEW] syslog logging is broken in natty

2011-01-18 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cloud-init

syslog logging is broken in natty, while it works fine in maverick. on
a maverick instance, /var/log/cloud-init.log will have lines like"

[CLOUDINIT] 2011-01-18 16:44:19,830 - cloud-init[INFO]: cloud-init start-local
running: Tue, 18 Jan 2011 16:44:19 +. up 11.47 seconds

cloud-init-cfg[INFO]: cloud-init-cfg ['all']

the shift in format is due to the change in the logging config that is used.
The first format is cloud-init writing directly to the file. The second is
cloud-config when the syslog is availalbe, writing through syslog. Something
is busted with that in natty.

2011-01-18 Thread Scott Moser
Thanks for taking the time to open a bug.
I think that I'm going to "fix" this issue by removing the updates check from
cloud-init (bug 653220).

In 10.10 and later (and we're getting there on 10.04) images, there is
really no need for this check.

[Bug 610652] Re: vmbuilder randomly fails to install grub

2011-01-18 Thread Aaron Brady
I also see this. Have deployed 50 production VMs, it happened
approximately 10% of the time.

I'm using KVM with LVM and vm-builder; these options:

vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --hostname=vmbuilt --domain=manc.iws-hosting.co.uk
--raw=/dev/svs4/vmbuilt-disk --mem=512 --user=iweb --pass=xxx
--rootpass=xxx --cpus=1 --templates=/templates --dest=vmbuilt
--ip=192.168.1.201 --mask=255.255.255.0 --gw=192.168.1.182
--dns=193.228.155.86 --rootsize=8192 --swapsize=1024

dd'ing off the first sector of the LV shows that GRUB just isn't present
in the MBR and launching a VM just stops with no GRUB messages.

[Bug 558793] Re: net ads dns register fails in 2008 R2 domain

2011-01-18 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Ok, they are good after all. Samba doesn't add a PTR record, so these
patches didn't help there. When the DNS doesn't know about the host,
it'll create a new A record for it on domain join, and that works with
these patches. So it was a false alarm.

[Bug 341817] Re: dhcpd wont start due to rndc.key permissions

2011-01-18 Thread Thomas Schweikle
The standard location for rndc.key is, since it belongs to "bind"-Tools:
/etc/bind/rndc.key
It should be sufficient to add this whole directory to both: named and dhcpd in
apparmor.d

BTW: it would be nice if named used /etc/named for its configuration
files! Named and bind-tools are two things one shall not mix up!

[Bug 702903] Re: package tftpd-hpa 5.0-11ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: Pakiet jest w złym stanie - powinien zostać przeinstalowany przed usunięciem.

2011-01-18 Thread Lepus
Thank you for the feedback.
Your translation is correct.

All started when tftpd-hpa update stoped during installation. Since that every
time update manager has tried to continue interrupted update and has stopped in
this installation phase
(the same as after "sudo aptitude install tftpd-hpa=5.0-11ubuntu2"):
...
Preconfiguring packages ...
/etc/default/tftpd-hpa: line 3: -s: command not found
(Reading database ... 177105 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace tftpd-hpa 5.0-11ubuntu2 (using
.../tftpd-hpa_5.0-11ubuntu2_i386.deb) ...

and it stops at this.

My /etc/default/tftpd-hpa:
# /etc/default/tftpd-hpa
RUN_DAEMON=”yes”
OPTIONS=”-l -s /tftpboot”
# TFTP_USERNAME="tftp"
# TFTP_DIRECTORY="/var/lib/tftpboot"
# TFTP_ADDRESS="0.0.0.0:69"
# TFTP_OPTIONS="--secure"

The following things appears in system as well (some I've got in Polish
and its only my translation):

1) "no entrance sign" icon on system panel is displayed, its tip is that
an error occured, run package manager or apt-get in terminal. Error
message: "Error: BrokenCount > 0" usually meaning that installed
packages has unsatisfied dependencies

2) on startup package manager shows error with message telling dpkg
activity was interrupted and I have to manually perform "sudo dpkg
--configure -a" to solve the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please
report.

3) "sudo dpkg --configure -a" informs that error of processing tftpd-hpa
occured and package is in poor condition - it should be reinstalled
before removal

4) "dpkg -l tftpd-hpa" gives:
Desired=U=Unknown/I=Install/R=Remove/P=Purge/H=Hold
| Status=N=Not/I=Inst/C=Cfg-files/U=Unpacked/F=Failed/H=Half-inst/W=trig
aWait/T=Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/H=Hold/R=Reinst-required (Status,Err:uppercase=bad)

un tftp-hpa(no available description)

I hope it will help.
