If this is an EBS root instance, can you snapshot it and mount it from another instance? If so, you should be able to view the contents of /var/log and paste any errors from sshd. If you can't find anything there, you can mount the volume r/w and add 'console output' to /etc/init/ssh.conf and then check the console output when it fails to start up. [Bug 531912] Re: /etc/init.d/ssh seems to work, but actually upstart is used.
OK, if /etc/init/ssh doesn't fully replicate the functionality of the /etc/init.d/ssh script to include properly setting up chrooted environments and properly handling libc6 updates then what benefit does it provide users? Why, if you can't get Upstart to provide the same functionality as the /etc/init.d startup script, move control of sshd over to Upstart anyways? Again, what does it do for the users? At least the fix for this bit of Upstart badness is easy enough, just remove /etc/init/ssh and start sshd with the script in init.d. Perhaps it's not as architecturally elegant as Upstart is supposed to be, but at least we all know that it works. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531912 Title: /etc/init.d/ssh seems to work, but actually upstart is used. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
I just updated to the openssh-server_5.3p1-3ubuntu5 package for a Lucid instance, and now I can't get SSH to start. Or, rather, I'm running into what Jan mentioned above, with the respawning/terminating loop that eventually results in init deciding that SSH isn't going to start, and giving up. Something like: init: ssh main process (430) terminated with status 255 init: ssh main process ended, respawning init: ssh main process (449) terminated with status 255 init: ssh main process ended, respawning init: ssh main process (456) terminated with status 255 init: ssh main process ended, respawning ... init: ssh main process (468) terminated with status 255 init: ssh respawning too fast, stopped The real trouble here is, this is an EC2 instance that was just restarted, so now I have no means by which I can get on that machine to do any additional troubleshooting or ultimately fix this. But this was not caused by me executing an /etc/init.d/ssh stop, so I don't think this is bug #531912. So my question would be what now? Downgrade upstart (I just upgraded to 0.6.5-8)? Downgrade openssh-server (I just upgraded to openssh- server_5.3.01-3ubuntu5? Is there something I can do to workaround this? [Bug 723480] Re: php5-fpm uses too high value for pm.max_children by default
I am thinking that there will be many more virtual servers running in the wild very soon rather than physical servers, and I have a hunch that a lot of them are configured as 1Gb or even 512Mb -- if the defaults are too high, it results in a server that crashes after some time (it took mine about a day to crash) and at least for me it was not apparent where to find the error. I know, I should have done the math, but I somehow thought the defaults would be pre-calculated to fit a really small machine. In fact, one of my first errors I did, was to increase the limit to 100 children under that very assumption, and it definitely maxed my server out. It might even have been so that if I hadn't done that error I would have rebooted the server once a week and never found the problem. I could blame this on php too: before 5.2.0 max_memory was 8Mb default, 5.2.0 it became 16Mb and then recently it jumped to 128Mb. That's a large step to take. Now, I'm not sure if 128Mb for a php process is really necessary (although I know that wordpress loves memory), but in any case, I rather have a underutilized server by default than a server that slowly dives into dementia by default. I even think 4 might be too many as the max_children if the minimum requirements for ubuntu server is listed at 256Mb. That number pretty much says "you can run most stuff comfortably with 512Mb" As for if it's better to have many concurrent serving php instances vs a lot of memory allocated to each instance is probably depending an the application. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723480 Title: php5-fpm uses too high value for pm.max_children by default -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 721320] Re: DKIM-related failures should not end up in the panic log
1. Better explanation of the issue and how it is affecting the package in Ubuntu. The debian bug report explains it quite nicely, but let me summarize... Without this patch, the Exim4 package on Lucid will generate warnings like this 2010-01-31 21:41:16 1Nbga6-0005ZL-FH DKIM: Error while running this message through validation, disabling signature verification. in /var/log/exim4/paniclog. These are not 'real' errors, they are just warnings. They can not be disabled. They do not belong in the paniclog, which should always be empty. 2. Provide a step-by-step to be able to reproduce this bug. Run a semi-busy mailserver on Lucid, and you will collect these warnings in your paniclog - on one of our machines, I'm seeing a couple a day on an average mail volume of 100,000 accepted messages. The patch is trivial, it's been applied to the Debian package, and it would be really nice to not have to manually patch Exim4 on Lucid for this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to exim4 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/721320 Title: DKIM-related failures should not end up in the panic log -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 695857] Re: ssl protection not default for sensitive packages
I have tried to come up with some very good solutions, but it appears that we must lay (another) burden on packagers to realize this. 1) If an authenticating web app foo is installed and SSL is not installed then "secure by default" tells us that the user should see a splash page explaining that it would be insecure to not use SSL but that if you read README.NOSSL in the package then there are instructions to enable the unencrypted access anyway. OR there is a high prioryty quiestion to the admin during installation that results in doing the right thing. The default should be to be secure IMHO. I guess dpkg- reconfigure should re-ask that question and set things up according to the answer. 2) 1) takes care of 2) as well 3) Not sure what that means in terms of interaction with the admin 4) If SSL is installed then non-ssl access to the app should result in a redirect to the SSL url according to the principle of least surprise, and possebly also bug #1. In apache there is a number of ways to case configuration based on the presence of modules and so on. For ther httpds I don't know...
