[Bug 728879] [NEW] check_perms -f broke mailman

2011-03-03 Thread cp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mailman

mailman (1:2.1.13-1ubuntu0.2)

check_perms -f changed the permissions on /var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-
mailman and exim4 couldn't read it. This caused exim4 to create a panic
log, not good!

# cat /var/log/exim4/paniclog
2011-03-03 21:06:25 failed to expand condition
"${lookup{$local_part@$domain}lsearch{/var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman}{1}{0}}"
for mailman_router router: failed to open
/var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman for linear search: Permission denied
(euid=104 egid=112)
2011-03-03 21:17:58 failed to expand condition
"${lookup{$local_part@$domain}lsearch{/var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman}{1}{0}}"
for mailman_router router: failed to open
/var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman for linear search: Permission denied
(euid=104 egid=112)

# ls -l /var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman
-rw-rw 1 root list 9633 2011-02-28 23:51
/var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman

Simple fix not using check_perms.
# chgrp Debian-exim /var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman

If the lists were busy or I hadn't noticed the paniclog until later,
this would have resulted in lost mail!

Running check_perms still shows many permission problems, over 200, but
they haven't affected the lists or the archives. It appears the way
mailman is packaged with the many symbolic links contributed to this
problem.

This bug was found in mailman on Ubuntu 10.04. but I suspect it is an
issue for many of the packaged versions of mailman in Ubuntu and Debian.

[Bug 728017] Re: xwindows over ssh causes instability

2011-03-03 Thread enb
Simply interacting with the firefox window, like moving it around or resizing
it, seems to cause it to freeze up, and when it does, so does the rest of the
gui, including local apps and the taskbar, etc. firefox seems to be the only
app over ssh that seems to cause it so far, xeyes and other things don't.
Something that might be related, is that when I am connecting to a mint debian
machine over ssh, and try to launch something that asks for permissions, such
as synaptic, it freezes everything up to the point that I have to ctlr-alt-f1
and kill the ssh terminal just to get everything to work in ubuntu again. This
might happen if the host is something other than mint debian, but I haven't had
a chance to test that yet, or try it on a different ubuntu client either.

1. apport-collect 728017
Package openssh not installed and no hook available, ignoring

It then says no addition info gathered.

2. Not any particular site, when firefox is open across the network,
even when not browsing anything, just moving the window around the
screen will cause momentary freezes for the whole gui, client side.
Also, keep in mind that I think you need a slow host or connection to
the host to replicate this. FF takes over 2 minutes just to launch after
typing in the command.

service, cluster-, storage- and top-level cloud controller with Tasksel

This is something you should bring up to the VSFTPD development team as
this is not an Ubuntu bug. A VSFTPD mailing list perhaps, or an e-mail
to a project code contributor would be appropriate for your concerns.

[Bug 672328] Re: vsftpd: discloses whether usernames are valid or not

2011-03-03 Thread Andy Wright
userlist_deny

This option is examined if userlist_enable is activated. If you set this
setting to NO, then users will be denied login unless they are
explicitly listed in the file specified by userlist_file. When login is
denied, the denial is issued before the user is asked for a password.

userlist_enable

If enabled, vsftpd will load a list of usernames, from the filename
given by userlist_file. If a user tries to log in using a name in this
file, they will be denied before they are asked for a password. This may
be useful in preventing cleartext passwords being transmitted. See also
userlist_deny.

"If a user tries to log in using a name in this file, they will be
denied before they are asked for a password."

[Bug 590201] Re: OpenSolaris (previously working) no longer boots: kernel panics early

2011-03-03 Thread Ed Hynan
>> Thanks, Ed. I'd like to see if latest kernel or qemu fixes it. Could
you try doing add-apt-repository ppa:kernel->> >> ppa/ppa and then
(after apt-get update) install the package linux-image-generic-lts-
backport-natty (or linux->> >> image-server-lts-backport-natty)? Then
see whether the images boot under 2.6.38-5.

I added the repository and updated, but that did not make any
kernel packages available. So, I got

http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-lts-backport-natty/linux-image-2.6.38-5-generic_2.6.38-5.32~lucid1_amd64.deb
and installed that.

It did not change the behavior of kvm (it did change the other thing
I mentioned: that kernel would not boot on main power - only on
battery).

Since IIRC the problem began after some update to 10.04, I'll try
a few packages from that in order looking for the change.

[Bug 727478] Re: mysql upgrade hang at 'installing new version of config file /etc/init/mysql.conf' during upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04

2011-03-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
The problem is that there is an off-by-one bug in the maverick kernel
(already fixed in natty) for when apparmor userspace is compiled against
a newer kernel with more AF entries than the kernel that apparmor_paser
is bing run on. The options are to SRU a maverick kernel to fix the bug
or to adjust the apparmor_parser in natty to do a kernel version check,
and cap the number of AF entries appropriately. Since this could affect
more than just Ubuntu, and because this only affects upgrades (ie, newer
apparmor userspace compiled on maverick is just fine), it has been
decided that the second option will be used, and the patch is currently
under development.

Thank you for response.

Could you double check if you recreated all steps.
I have checked that on ubuntu 10.10 maverick 32 / 64 bits and debian
squeeze 64 bits with mysql 5.1.49 - all systems have same result.
In 10.10 maverick desktop edition 32 bit with fresh install of mysql (no
config changes) with just one db - 'test'.
Debian one have no changes to config too.

Important bit is:

INSERT INTO `a_b` VALUES (12,4);

select * from a_b where a_id = 11 and b_id = 4;
Empty set (0.00 sec)

and how create index fix it:

create unique index index_a_b_on_both_id on a_b (a_id, b_id);

select * from a_b where a_id = 11 and b_id = 4;
+--+--+
| a_id | b_id |

| 11 |4 |

Re: [Bug 726461] Re: sshd on lucid causes kernel panic

2011-03-03 Thread Alex Harrington
The OCFS2 filesystem is held on an OpenFiler box.

Cluster A is our live VM system with two nodes.
Cluster B is the backup system (the box in question).

Once a week, the OpenFiler box takes an LVM snapshot of the filesystem
normally used by cluster A and exports it as a new iSCSI target.
The backup server, which is the sole member of cluster B then connects
to the new iSCSI target and mounts the OCFS2 filesystem.
It then copies the VM images from inside the OCFS2 filesystem to local disk
It then unmounts the OCFS2 filesystem, disconnects from the iSCSI target.
The OpenFiler box then stops exporting the backup target, and destroys
the snapshot.

So yes, the backup server is using OCFS2 properly, but not in the
production environment cluster since we're dealing with historical
data in the snapshot.

I see, I thought you were saying there was instability on the host.

I've just tried to reproduce this ssh'ing from a ubuntu lucid to a
ubuntu natty laptop and running firefox, with no success.

Additional information which would help to debug this:

1. The next time this happens, please do 'apport-collect 728017' which
should give us more details.

2. Can you give me a particular site which always reproduces this?

3. Please do 'wmctrl -m' and 'wmctrl -lG' on the client and give output
here. ('sudo apt-get install wmctrl' if needed to get the program)

4. Please give ps -ef from the client

You'll need to run this in /etc/init.d/apache2 before the daemon is run
(it might already have a similar ulimit command so make sure you run
after that):

ulimit -c unlimited

[Bug 726461] Re: sshd on lucid causes kernel panic

2011-03-03 Thread Ante Karamatić
So, LVM2 snapshot from clusterA is exported as iSCSI device to clusterB
which then mounts it and copies the VMs from that device.

At some point during the process, machine exporting iSCSI device
crashes. So, machine that's crashing isn't really using OCFS2 and
therefor doesn't have OCFS2 setup at all? If that's the case, then we
can exclude OCFS2 and maybe look at iSCSI.

(sorry if I'm iterating over obvious, but I need to be sure so I know
what we have here :)

Re: [Bug 726461] Re: sshd on lucid causes kernel panic

2011-03-03 Thread Alex Harrington
It's using the native DLM. However, it's the only node in the cluster.
Our live VM environment is Ubuntu server running KVM and OCFS2 and we
have 2 nodes. This box is just a backup server which takes an lvm2
snapshot of the OCFS2 filesystem, exports it over iSCSI and then as a
separate cluster mounts the filesystem and copies the VM images off.

Hello J Queiroz, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

We'll need a full core dump or a complete backtrace on your core dump to
figure out what the issue is and/or send it upstream to php.

If you install php5-dbg and re-run your backtrace we can use that output
to help debug this. Also if you want to upload the core file, you may
want to make this report private, at which point only subscribers will
see it.

Marking Incomplete pending response from J Queiroz.

What about installing just "nagios-plugin-basic"? "nagios-plugins" is also
depending[1] on "nagios-plugins-standard" which have (at least) on Ubuntu
couple of depencies[2], also on "smbclient".

In debian we have moved a bunch of dependencies to recommands with 1.4.14-2,
which gives you the possibilty to get rid of those packages by deinstalling
them or avoiding automatically installing recommanded packages. Anyhow ... the
ubuntu package has this changes reverted for an unknown reason.

Just my 2 cents, Jan.

[Bug 727091] Re: Select on table with two colums cause empty result.

2011-03-03 Thread Clint Byrum
Marcin, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and help us
make Ubuntu better.

Given that you are the only one reporting this issue, I tried to repeat
it using the test case from the mysql bug report.

I was unable to reproduce it, with MySQL 5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 on natty,
or 5.1.49-1ubuntu8.1 on maverick.

Marcin, I'm going to close this bug as Invalid. If you have further
details that will help us reproduce the issue or further understand how
your setup differs, feel free to re-open it as Status "New".

** Changed in: mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

[Bug 728328] [NEW] nagios plugins depend on samba

2011-03-03 Thread rew
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: nagios-plugins

I have an internet server. I like to keep as little as possible
installed. A package as "SAMBA' I simply do NOT want installed on my
server. It has no place there.

Now to get nagios to check my disk-free-status, I installed "nagios-
plugins". This depends on "samba-common" and samba-common-bin. It
stopped short of starting the samba server.

So, to monitor samba stuff, I imagine that having the samba tools
installed is required. But for my use this is not neccesary at all. This
sort of "attitude" causes software bloat. We/ubuntu should be careful in
what dependencies to mark as required.

Either split the nagios-plugins package into a nagios-plugins-samba, or
remove the dependency. In the latter case, you can make things "neat" by
editing the script that requires samba to print a nice: "you need to
install samba" if it isn't found.

And YES it is a security issue to have unneccesary software installed on
an internet server.

[Bug 708493] Re: cannot login anymore: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

2011-03-03 Thread Oren Held
Also, I'll re-post the available workarounds as I collected from other
reports of this bug:

1. shortening the list of ciphers by -c aes128-ctr to command line
2. adding to ~/.ssh/config: HostKeyAlgorithms

[Bug 708493] Re: cannot login anymore: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

2011-03-03 Thread Oren Held
Serge: I am really not sure this is related to ecdsa bug. Last time I
checked (about a week ago) the bug still existed even in upstream. See
the "connection reset by peer" discussions in mailing list:
http://lists.mindrot.org/pipermail/openssh-unix-
dev/2011-February/thread.html

In comment #14 I though it's related and immediately corrected myself.
