[Bug 550409] Re: Slow disk IO for all guests with all disc modes and types.

2011-06-01 Thread agent 8131
People should be aware that cache=writeback should only be used if you
do not care about the very real possibility of guest disk corruption
should the guest or host fail unexpectedly. Given that there is no
facility for shutting down guests cleanly on host shutdown one should be
very wary of risking their guest data for anything important.

I will do this if there is a foolproof way of doing so. This is my
main machine that runs a number of VM's so I would need to know there is
a sure fire method of testing this new kernel. Happy to follow a
 reliable link.

   add-apt-repository ppa:serge-hallyn/kernel
   apt-get update
   apt-get dist-upgrade

will install the new kernel.

By the way, other guests seem OK. Trixbox is Centos 5.5 I . I have
a media streamer VM based off the latest debian release which is OK and
also a SL 6.0 which is a copy of red hat 6.0 that seems OK. Also a
number of Windows VM's. I do not know what timeing source they use though.

It sounds like this bug should be deemed low priority, especially since
there is a good workaround. If this is a high-profile machine, and you
want to defer trying the test kernel, that's certainly understandable.

What I usually do is revert by using

'dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-YYY*' where

linux-image-YYY is the version you are using right now. If
linux-headers was also updated, then revert that as well.

2011-06-01 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks, Attb2. If I understand right, the workaround suffices? In that
case, until someone hits a case which is solved by this patch, I'd
prefer not to risk a regression with an SRU. I'll mark this WONTFIX for
now. If I misunderstood you, please change back to Confirmed.

If anyone else hits this bug and the patch works for them, then I'll
request the SRU.

Thanks very much.

[Bug 791410] [NEW] Extra Apache instances not started on boot

2011-06-01 Thread Nick Wellnhofer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

I'm running a setup with multiple Apache instances (see
/usr/share/doc/apache2/README.multiple-instances). The extra instances
aren't started on boot because the Apache startup script
/etc/init.d/apache2 contains the following test in line 20:

But the script name is something like /etc/rc2.d/S01apache2-xxx (note
the S01 before apache2-xxx).

[Bug 578536] Re: when stopped, automount orphans some mounts

2011-06-01 Thread Clint Byrum
This bug needs to be fixed in Oneiric, and a full SRU justification
added to the bug description before the upload made to maverick-proposed
can go into maverick-updates. In particular I'm interested in the
regression potential involved with removing this patch. I'm going to
hold off accepting it until the regression potential is documented.

[Bug 419182] Re: KVM and audio driver in Windows 7

2011-06-01 Thread Alexander Wetzel
I finally found a driver for win7 64bit which is working with the ac97 sound
card:
http://www.64bitdrivers.com/driver.php?id=1375

If you download the driver sk35558.exe and edit the inf file for the PCI IDs
used by kvm it will install with a warning about unsigned code.
Add the following line to the [Conexant.NTamd64] Section in the file
cp6308Ba.inf:

%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_8086DEV_2415SUBSYS_8086

I think this helps to mitigates the issue till we update to a new
version with hda sound support.

Thanks for reporting this bug.

The package refused to finish updating because /etc/resolv.conf was not
a link. Please turn it into a link by doing:

   mv /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.orig
   ln -s /etc/resolv.conf.orig /etc/resolv.conf

Then re-try the update. Please let us know if you continue to have
problems.

[Bug 787091] Re: Unable to use USB device in KVM quest

2011-06-01 Thread Serge Hallyn
I can't reproduce this on my natty host which also has cups and the
system-config-printer-gnome running. I don't have high hopes that they
are in fact the culprit, but still it seems worth checking.

Could you try removing system-config-printer-* packages and stop cups,

  sudo stop cups
  sudo apt-get remove system-config-printer-gnome system \
system-config-printer-common \
system-config-printer-udev

Log out and back in, and see if after that kvm is able to use the printer.
Then reinstall with

  apt-get install system-config-printer-gnome \
system-config-printer-common \
system-config-printer-udev
  sudo start cups

when you are done.

[Bug 791410] Re: Extra Apache instances not started on boot

2011-06-01 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

+ ==
+ SRU Justification:
+ 1. Impact: multiple apache instances (apache-*) are not started on boot
+ 2. How bug addressed: the apache2 init script allows itself to have a prefix
(i.e. S01) when it is one of the multiple 'apache-*' instances.
+ 3. Patch: see comment #4
+ 4. TEST CASE: reboot a system after following
/usr/share/doc/apache2/README.multiple-instances instructions to create
multiple instances. Only the main instance will be started.
+ 5. Regression potential: The patch is against the init script. If there were
a bug in the patch, then apache might fail to start up properly.
+ ==
+
  Binary package hint: apache2

I'm running a setup with multiple Apache instances (see
  /usr/share/doc/apache2/README.multiple-instances). The extra instances
aren't started on boot because the Apache startup script
/etc/init.d/apache2 contains the following test in line 20:

  elif [ ${0##*/apache2-} != $0 ]

But the script name is something like /etc/rc2.d/S01apache2-xxx (note
  the S01 before apache2-xxx).

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04
  Package: apache2 2.2.17-1ubuntu1
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2
  Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic i686
  Architecture: i386
  Date: Wed Jun 1 17:42:11 2011
  ProcEnviron:
- LANG=en_US.UTF-8
- SHELL=/bin/bash
+  LANG=en_US.UTF-8
+  SHELL=/bin/bash
  SourcePackage: apache2
UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to natty on 2011-05-10 (22 days ago)

[Bug 781478] Re: package samba 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-06-01 Thread muddymind
I'm also having trouble upgrading samba. I'm getting the following
output:

Setting up samba (2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.2) ...
start: Job failed to start
invoke-rc.d: initscript nmbd, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing samba (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 samba
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

The funny thing is that samba is currently working! I tried to remove with
purge but after reinstall the same thing happens again when installing (it
installs but ends with the same error)

Is there a reason why you dropped that from the patch, or should it be

[Bug 791625] [NEW] /javascript/* URLs sidelined by conf.d settings

2011-06-01 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

Please see http://www.mantisbt.org/bugs/view.php?id=12796

Default config of Apache2 in Debian/Ubuntu leads to problems when
installing virtual hosts that required direct access to subdirectories
named 'javascript'.

The conf.d setting should be optional, or renamed to something ubuntu-

2011-06-01 Thread Steve Langasek
This isn't actually a multiarch problem. Following the directions from
the referenced site results in installation of an i386 'libaio' package
which doesn't even match the official {libaio1,libaio-dev} packages in
the Ubuntu archive, let alone supporting multiarch.

So this is an ordinary package conflict between an official package and
an unsupported unofficial one. I don't think there's any bug here.

If this is a library that's important to have cross-installable as a
32-bit lib on a 64-bit system, we can certainly make *converting* it to
multiarch a priority; but it's not a bug per se that it isn't yet
converted.
