[Bug 809046] Re: Apache Server Dumpos Frequently - "*** glibc detected *** /usr/sbin/apache2: double free or corruption"

2011-07-14 Thread Allan-9
I added Dumpio to the apache config, I was able to catch a apache dump in a 45s
window.
I went through ALL the logs, not just apache logs, and looked at entries in
that time range,
I went through access.log and executed all the GET statements, called the same
pages, no errors occured.

>From a load perspective there were about 20 entries in the access.log during
>that time frame, not very loaded.
I have a program called loadavg running and i dont see any spikes or unusual
loads, trasnmissions or memory usage when the apache resets occur

Any help or ideas on what to look for would be greatly appreciated

Allan

[Bug 809526] Re: squid 2.7.STABLE9-2ubuntu5.1, reload kills squid, called in /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid

2011-07-14 Thread Ernst Kloppenburg
this is an issue in maverick only
- lucid already uses 'restart squid' -> ok
- natty uses 'reload squid' and this works fine due to some other changes -> ok
- I do not know about oneiric but I guess it works like natty

yes, the fix is indeed as you describe it in comment #1.
I applied that fix by hand months ago and it was used daily.

[Bug 810736] Re: logrotate script needs to notify all samba processes when logs are rotated

2011-07-14 Thread Simon Déziel
** Description changed:

After the log rotation, logrotate needs to notify all samba processes to
release their open file descriptors on the log files.

The current logrotate configuration file does not do so and only notify the
process that has it's PID stored /var/run/samba/.
This is wrong as other child will keep logging to the "deleted" files and may
use all the disk space. Those "deleted" files are not showing in ls output but
they are still consuming space in the file system.

I think the right solution to this bug would be to have logrotate to
call "smbcontrol all reload-config". This solution was proposed by
Andrew Bartlett, a Samba developer, in this email http://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=160076#25. The smbcontrol utility will notify
- all related daemons (smbd, nmbd and winbindd) and their children to re-
- open a new log file.
+ all related daemons (smbd, nmbd and winbindd) and their child processes
+ to re-open a new log file.

I have confirmed that this problem affects Samba from Lucid to Natty at
  least.

[Bug 810736] Re: logrotate script needs to notify all samba processes when logs are rotated

2011-07-14 Thread Simon Déziel
Steps to observe the problem :

# Only one log file exists
ls -1 /var/log/samba
cores
log.smbd

# Force the rotation
logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/samba

# The log is rotated but the old log file is missing (was rm'ed and does not
show in ls)
ls -1 /var/log/samba
cores
log.smbd.1.gz

# with lsof we see the renamed file still opened and deleted
lsof | grep log.smbd
smbd 6593 root 2w REG 251,1 524288000 783512 /var/log/samba/log.smbd.1 (deleted)
smbd 6593 root 27w REG 251,1 524288000 783512 /var/log/samba/log.smbd.1
(deleted)
smbd 6595 root 2w REG 251,1 343 783436 /var/log/samba/log.smbd.1 (deleted)
smbd 6595 root 8w REG 251,1 343 783436 /var/log/samba/log.smbd.1 (deleted)

# Instruct smbd to reopen the log file (as Natty's logrotate does)
kill -HUP `cat /var/run/samba/smbd.pid`

# Now the log.smbd finally appears
ls -1 /var/log/samba
cores
log.smbd
log.smbd.1.gz

# lsof still shows problems due to other children processes not knowing to
release the log file
lsof | grep log.smbd
smbd 6593 root 2w REG 251,1 202 783521 /var/log/samba/log.smbd
smbd 6593 root 8w REG 251,1 202 783521 /var/log/samba/log.smbd
smbd 6595 root 2w REG 251,1 343 783436 /var/log/samba/log.smbd.1 (deleted)
smbd 6595 root 8w REG 251,1 343 783436 /var/log/samba/log.smbd.1 (deleted)

Using "smbcontrol all reload-config" in the logrotate configuration file
fixes the issue.

[Bug 810736] [NEW] logrotate script needs to notify all samba processes when logs are rotated

Have patche applied

ii libvirt00.8.8-1ubuntu6.3

BUT I found on my installation that when

1/ the default virbr0 in /etc/libvirt/qemu/networks
is activated, VMs startup is done.

2/ the default virbr0 is disabled (by removing autostart symlink),
VMs never start.

The VMs don't use virbr0 but my defined br0 and br1.

[Bug 809046] Re: Apache Server Dumpos Frequently - "*** glibc detected *** /usr/sbin/apache2: double free or corruption"

2011-07-14 Thread Allan-9
Hi, thanks for your attention

As far as work - Ive built a new Amazone server from scratch, using
Ubuntos official AMI not a community one

I managed by sheer luck to move one domain to the new server and the crashes
happen on the new server but for two days the original server hasnt had one
crash. Which is a huge step to isolating the issue.
The original server is a Drupal/Moodle setup - no crashes in two days

The failing server is a WprdPerfect/Vbulletin/HTML set up. I upgraded
the WP software yestrday but the problem remains. VBulletin is at
latest release.

I turned on PHP error logging but have no entries, not sure if ther eis
something I did wrong or PHP just doesnt error out

My biggest issue now is that the crash/dump doesnt do a time stamp, so
the I have to guess and I've not been able to find any smoking gun from
the logs about what was going on at the time of the crash.

Is there any way to force entries intot he error log? Perhaps Some wget
call I can put in a cron job that will cause and error entry?

When you say Work 'load' I am not sure what you mean, you want to know
the server loads?

Allan

[Bug 803804] Re: ec2-describe-group does not print group ID

2011-07-14 Thread Scott Moser
I can't reproduce this using ec2-api-tools version 1.4.3.0-0ubuntu1 (oneiric).
For example:
$ ec2-describe-group default | grep GROUP
GROUP sg-134da77a 950047163771default default group
$ ec2-version
1.4.3.0 2011-05-15

Could you try the build in the ppa at
https://launchpad.net/~awstools-dev/+archive/awstools/ .
If that fixes your problem, then mark this as 'fix-released' (as it is fixed in
oneiric). If it does not, then there must be something different with your
account than mine.

[Bug 808224] Re: ovs-brcompatd not built

2011-07-14 Thread Ben Pfaff
> @Ben: Can you comment on why it's use is discouraged?

A few reasons:
* Its original goal was to support XAPI on Citrix XenServer, in versions of
XenServer before OVS was integrated. We implemented exactly the feature set
required for that. There could easily be important omissions.
* Unlike most of the rest of OVS, we don't test it here at Nicira anymore,
because we don't need it anymore for XenServer support.
* We're working to upstream the OVS kernel module but there's no way that the
brcompatd module would ever get accepted upstream.
* Using OVS advanced features requires using ovs-vsctl instead of brctl anyway
(and if you don't want to use OVS advanced features why bother switching from
the bridge?).

> Also, do you plan to make a binary package for it in Debian, if we are
to add it - i'd rather avoid diverging.

It's written on my whiteboard as a to-do item but it's kind of a low
priority. If you get around to it before me I'll take your patch.

Thanks,

Ben.

have the most recent packages including those fixes.

[Bug 745930] Re: cloud-init timeout waiting for metadata service on EC2

2011-07-14 Thread mumcowpig
Don't ask me why I installed the aptitude "task" group uec on my ubuntu
10.04.2 server edition virtualbox image. I wanted to have a minimal
streamlined ubuntu virtual machine for developing for Heroku cedar stack
which is based on ubuntu 10.04 and ruby1.9.2

My virtualbox host machine is running the linux-server(pae) kernel
with dkms compiled virtualbox-ose kernel module loaded.

Almost every boot/service hang can be addressed by holding shift on boot
and choosing the (single user) recovery kernel/initramfs image in
grub/lilo. From there, I can choose command prompt with networking and
uninstall services like cloud-init. Then i could reboot.

Because of this design problem,
Cloud-init by default runs before the recovery menu appears. At a minimum, I
wish cloud-init would resume to the recovery console after 100 attempts so I
could fix this.

Possibly there may be a key sequence or kernel parameter that I could
add to the recovery grub boot menu that would allow me to disable this
server on a one shot basis?

[Bug 784937] Re: /mnt not mounted, swap not used, disk is xvde

2011-07-14 Thread Stefan Bader
Just as some additional background information while there is upstream
discussion going on. I am not sure how it will end as yesterday
responses rather made hope for getting things back and today there is
others rather wanting to preserve the current status.

The main argument is HVM as you can have the IDE disks provided as hd*
devices on an emulated controller and at the same time via xvd*. So they
want to preserve the first 4 device names for that.

[Bug 253230] Re: qemu-kvm should Build-Depends on libvdeplug2-dev (KVM vde2 support not working)

2011-07-14 Thread Danielinux
I am replying here because I think this discussion is still adherent to
the topic, and also because I don't mind spamming this bug report. It's
been open for years and lead to nothing.

I am not here to say what is better between ovs, vde or any other
similar tool. The super-partes role of a distribution must be to include
every (popular) solution and this is the real advantage of free/OS.
Ubuntu is just living on a different planet here.

For the sack of completeness, I must say vde has a kernelspace version
as well, but it is less popular since vde is designed to run on other
OSes too. I would be interested to benchmark the two tools anyway.

As a matter of fact, I don't see any counterpart for most of the vde
tools in ovs, in particular most of the time I have to recreate complex
network topologies, integrate emulated channels, use encrypted tunnels,
connect local/remote real/virtual machines with maximum flexibility.

OVS is a VDE competitor as well as OpenVPN is, from my point of view.
VDE is just a "broader" tool, and for me (and several other people) it
is just nice to use the native integration with qemu and kvm, even if
workarounds like bridging a kvm tap or even "capturing" it with vde_pcap
are still possible nowadays with the lame official Ubuntu package.

My point is that OVS for sure does a great job, most likely from what
you say it is even better than VDE for the features they have in common,
but VDE is a set made of a larger number of tools for different
purposes, that's why I am insisting that much here. Sorry if I was too
direct in my previous reply: I am trying to explain why "use X instead
of Y if Y is not supported in the distro" was not an acceptable answer.

First of all, I am not belonging to Ubuntu. So what they do or not is
out of my scope ;-) My suggestion is to use openvswitch. Vde is running
in userspace, while openvswitch uses kernel modules and has much better
performance. And I guess, you do not really know about the fetures that
ovs has (sorry, don't feel attacked, Just my guess).

The good thing with ovs is that it has a bridge-replacement module. So
for kvm, nothing changes.

I have to stop now, because this is a bug tracker and people are getting
angry, if it is used as forum or discussion platform. Feel free to
contact me personally.

[Bug 253230] Re: qemu-kvm should Build-Depends on libvdeplug2-dev (KVM vde2 support not working)

2011-07-14 Thread Danielinux
Sorry, but I don't get the point.
The openvswitch does not even have half of the features vde provides, it is
just a switch!

Also, it is not for me, it's for my users I am complaining. My Debian
has full kvm+vde support since this has been closed a while ago.

I know there are different solutions for the average Joe, but Ubuntu
cannot simply ignore the request of thousands of users. The role of a
*complete* distribution should be to provide different tools for similar
purposes.

Qemu and KVM have been supporting libvde2 for years now, and most distro
out there come with a fully featured kvm/qemu package.

[Bug 810270] Re: AppArmor profiles need updates for /var/run → /run and /var/lock → /run/lock

2011-07-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cups - 1.4.7-1

---
cups (1.4.7-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream version.

  [ Till Kamppeter ]
  * debian/patches/ubuntu-upstart.dpatch: Updated the patch to add support
to the new device enumeration functionality of udev-configure-printer.
This way we do not need to retrigger the printers. Retriggering is only
needed if udev rules change. A fallback to the old bahavior is provided
so that this CUPS package continues to work with older versions of
udev-configure-printer.

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * Update patches for new upstream release.
  * Drop fix-broken-ipv6-uris.patch, applied upstream.
  * debian/local/apparmor-profile: /var/run → /run transition. (LP: #810270)
  * Drop debian/patches/ubuntu-upstart.dpatch and move the upstart script to
debian/local/cups.upstart. In debian/rules, copy it to debian/, and remove
that again during clean. This is a slightly easier workaround for a
nonexisting "dh_installinit --sysvinit-only" option than the previous
creation of the upstart file with an ubuntu specific dpatch.
  * debian/patches/, debian/rules, debian/control, debian/source/format: Move
to source format "3.0 (quilt)" and convert our dpatches to quilt patches.
Drop dpatch build dependency.
  * Move Ubuntu specific patches to debian/patches/ubuntu. In debian/rules,
apply them when building on Ubuntu. Add "patch" build dependency.

[Bug 253230] Re: qemu-kvm should Build-Depends on libvdeplug2-dev (KVM vde2 support not working)

2011-07-14 Thread Danielinux
***Be aware: I don't speak on behalf of VDE team, this is only my
personal opinions as kvm user.***

A lot of users need this feature. My projects (see virtualbricks here on
lp) are affected by this bug and the only thing I can do is suggest
users to install another distribution.

I still see nothing moving on Ubuntu side for this bug. AFAIK "Natty" is
still affected.

The known workarounds by now are:

- Compile kvm yourself and enable libvdeplug support
- Switch to a (less blind) distribution. Debian for instance.

Sorry, the average user doesn't care about your universe vs. main
repository issues and you are not yet able to provide a solution that
makes sense.

If you can't just promote libvdeplug to main, then place qemu-kvm in
universe as well. I don't care, but this is becoming ridiculous.

[Bug 798934] Re: Lm-sensors's init script sets an unused variable

2011-07-14 Thread Dave Walker
Thanks for reporting this bug, i couldn't find this reference in the
natty init scripts - but did find it in the current development version
(and debian unstable).

A slightly larger extract shows:

...
PROGRAM=/usr/bin/sensors

test -x $PROGRAM || exit 0
...

This means that the init script is testing that the programme is
executable before continuing. I'm not sure i see the issue with this
bug. I am going to mark it Incomplete, please provide rational why this
is a concern.

Thanks!

[Bug 551549] Re: KVM vde2 support not working

2011-07-14 Thread Danielinux
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 253230 ***

A know workaround: (credits: tjworld.net)

echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/intuitivenipple/ubuntu hardy main' | sudo
tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/intuitivenipple.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kvm

Why ubuntu people are so blind? VDE is unique and the other networking
solutions for VM are just not enough!

[Bug 810397] Re: can't mount non IPv6 NFS shares

2011-07-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package autofs5 - 5.0.6-0ubuntu2

---
autofs5 (5.0.6-0ubuntu2) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/non-ipv6-hostname-lookups.patch: Resolve regression of not
being able to lookup non IPv6 hostnames, patch courtesy of upstream.
(LP: #810397)
  * debian/control:
- Removed dpatch from build-dep as package is now using
  quilt to handle patches.
- Bumped standards to 3.9.2, no changes required.
  * debian/rules: Added targets build-arch & build-indep to satisfy lintian.

   * Many problems reduced to "write a web app"
   * smoser thinks that cloud-init might need some changes that make it more
consumable here. Some of the upstart jobs that it does to make it run "really
early" might cause issues with networking being less reliable or predictable.
this is really just a warning / admission that there might be issues. i *do*
think that there needs to be one single thing that does initial first boot
installation.
    * It might be useful to allow at the cobbler (or provisioning level)
user-data that then would get to cloud-init.
    * somewhat obvious thought... would potentially be nice if there was an
ec2-like api cobbler/orchestra
   * cloud-init should be treated as the "configuration management bootloader",
i.e., the gateway to being managed by puppet/chef/ensemble/rightscale/etc
   * initial pxe boot image on the network should be a "collect data and report
it" image. Then, when a new system is plugged into the network it will boot
that image, and report back its mac and cpu/meminfo/disk...

  == Actions ==
  - pre-execution environment ( boot, collect data about system, report to
cobbler )
  - discovery step
