[Blueprint server-o-ensemble] Get Ensemble into Ubuntu

2011-08-01 Thread Clint Byrum
Blueprint changed by Clint Byrum:

Whiteboard changed:
- Status: ensemble and txzookeeper are in Oneiric NEW queue. txaws --
- waiting for response from developers on a release, or will package a bzr
- snapshot.
+ Status: ensemble and its dependencies are in oneiric. Every week on
+ Tuesday trunk is uploaded. txzookeeper and ensemble stalled getting into
+ Debian. Zookeeper's health is quite good in Debian and Ubuntu now.

  Work Items:
  [clint-fewbar] Prepare txzookeeper packaging for upload to Ubuntu: DONE
- [clint-fewbar] Get txzookeeper sponsored into Debian: INPROGRESS
+ [clint-fewbar] Get txzookeeper sponsored into Debian (no sponsors willing to
upload): POSTPONED
  [james-page] Upload latest zookeeper to Ubuntu: DONE
  [james-page] Submit debdiff of latest zookeeper to Debian: DONE
  [clint-fewbar] package snapshot or release txaws with fixes needed by
ensemble: DONE
  [clint-fewbar] Prepare ensemble package for upload to Ubuntu: DONE
  [niemeyer] Ensemble Daily PPA: DONE

  Work Items for ubuntu-11.10-beta-2:
  [clint-fewbar] Upload latest version of ensemble before release: TODO

  == The road to main for ensemble ==

  1. When do we want that to happen?

  - 11.10 Ensemble in Universe, problem, ensemble is rapidly developing
  how to deal with updates.

  Ensemble can't be frozen past a stable release. We need to deploy new
  features for the project to be successful.

  Two possible approaches:

  - Use a PPA (simpler, works well)
  - Do SRUs every month or so (much more heavy weight, apparently unnecessary)

  We'll probably be going with the second option.

  2. What do we need to get done for this to happen?

  Needed dependencies:

  - txzookeeper (not packaged yet)
  - txaws (must be upgraded)
  - zookeeper (needs patches which were already pushed upstream)

  3. Strategies for upgrading?

  4. Etc.

  Sample interaction with Ensemble:

  $ ensemble bootstrap
  # Creates some files in ~/.ensemble/
  $ ensemble bootstrap
  # Creates the first instance of Ensemble on EC2
  $ ensemble deploy wordpress
  $ ensemble deploy mysql
  $ ensemble add-relation wordpress mysql

  This requires AWS credentials in the environment.

  The mysql instance can be reused across services.

  Tasks
  ---

   - [niemeyer] Ensemble Daily PPA.

  Questions

   - Zookeeper Packages
   - python zookeeper
   - txaws package updates
   - ensemble package
   - principia package?

[Bug 810044] Re: cloud-init will have race conditions for cloud-config with multiple network adapters

2011-08-01 Thread Scott Moser
@clint,
  I think there is an issue with the branch you've been working on when
mappings are used.
  I've fixed my branch to use the first token of /var/run/network/ifstate
rather than the second. Experimentation showed that the first field will be
the physical interface and the second would be the virtual. 'auto' lines in
interfaces reference virtual.

  That would seem to be fine, but my issue right now is that 'ifquery
--list' does not show any interfaces that have had mappings done.
Sadly:

$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto eth0
mapping eth0
  script /usr/local/bin/print-last
  map AUTO xdhcp
  map MANUAL xmanual
iface xdhcp inet dhcp
iface xmanual inet static
  address 192.168.42.1
  netmask 255.255.255.0

$ cat /usr/local/bin/print-last
#!/bin/sh
while read name val; do last=$val; done
echo $last

$ sudo ifquery --list
lo
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.

$ sudo ifup eth0
$ cat /var/run/network/ifstate
lo=lo
eth0=xmanual

$ sudo ifquery --list
lo
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.

The 'Ignoring' message goes to stderr.

The issue, is that with the current implementation, the 'static-network-
up' would fire as soon as 'lo' was up. Because the 'ifquery --list' is
not providing a complete list to stdout as expected.

[Bug 819319] Re: more lxc scripts are broken with multiple cgroup mounts

2011-08-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lxc - 0.7.4.2-3ubuntu5

  * debian/patches/0011-fix-lxc-ls.patch:
debian/patches/0012-fix-lxc-netstat.patch:
The cgroup mounts created by cgroup-bin do not show up in /etc/mtab.
lxc-ls and lxc-netstat, as lxc-ps before, assume that /etc/mtab is
symlinked to /proc/mounts. (LP: #819319)
  * debian/patches/0013-unshare-call-cgroup-create.patch:
Don't spit out an error when there is no cgroup to remove because the
ns cgroup is not mounted. (LP: #819319)

[Bug 819486] [NEW] cannot boot from network - roms missing

The kvm package does not contain any PXE roms nor does it depend on or

[Bug 819507] [NEW] consume_userdata is only called once per instance

2011-08-01 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Right now, cloud-init.py has:
# parse the user data (ec2-run-userdata.py)
try:
cloud.sem_and_run(consume_userdata, once-per-instance,
cloud.consume_userdata,[],False)
except:
warn(consuming user data failed!\n)
raise

What that means is that the consume_userdata code only happens once per
instance.
consume_userdata is what then walks the userdata, with callbacks for each type.
The types at the moment are:
'text/x-shellscript' : self.handle_user_script,
'text/cloud-config' : self.handle_cloud_config,
'text/upstart-job' : self.handle_upstart_job,
'text/part-handler' : self.handle_handler,
'text/cloud-boothook' : self.handle_cloud_boothook

if the user-data changes, these will not be called again unless
'consume_userdata' lock has also been removed.

That means that
 * changes to cloud-config dont get realized (old cloud-config would be used)
 * upstart jobs are not re-written
 * handlers are not updated
 * handlers will not be called more than once per instance
 * boothooks are not called more than once (they are documented that they are)

[Bug 580319] Re: dhcp3-server and other init.d controled services launch before upstart brings all interface, thus failing to start

2011-08-01 Thread Clint Byrum
So, there is some progress on this bug. A new event called 'static-
network-up' was added to oneiric today, which will only be emitted once
all 'auto' interfaces from /etc/network/interfaces are up.

The next step is to delay /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf until this event is
emitted, and then also provide some kind of fail-safe for this event to
be emitted when some of the interfaces cannot be brought up.

Re: [Bug 819486] [NEW] cannot boot from network - roms missing

2011-08-01 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for submitting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Note that pxe is enabled by the roms in the kvm-pxe package.

However, I agree that now that ipxe is packaged, its roms should be
symlinked into /usr/share/qemu/.

That probably should be done, as it is in etherboot, in the
ipxe package itself.

[Bug 819535] [NEW] mysqldumpslow looking for slow.log file on an incorrect directory

2011-08-01 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming
Public bug reported:

when executing mysqldumpslow without arguments, the response I get is:
Can't find '/var/lib/mysql/*-slow.log'
when it should look for the slow log file at /var/log/mysql/mysql-slow.log

I understand that the tool should be executed with argument pointing to the
correct log file location, but if that is the case, then we should also change
the response from
Can't find '/var/lib/mysql/*-slow.log'
to
Missing argument, see --help or man

[Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2011-08-01 Thread dbendlin
Hello Guys,

I wanned to share my workarroud on this issue, Im using debian squeeze
as OS for a couple of virtualization hosts, each one of them holding a
number of vm's.

What I need is that when shuting down my virtualization host (from cli,
by cron, by ups low batt or by pressing the power button (ACPI)), the
host hast to shutdown each vm before going down.

I used one of the scripts from earlier posts:
1.-  I copied it to /usr/local/bin
2.- Changed ownership (chown root:root /usr/local/bin/libvirt-shutdown-domains)
3.- Chandeg permitions (chmod 775 /usr/local/bin/libvirt-shutdown-domains)
4.- Edited /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin, adding a reference to this file as the
secound line in the stop section of the init file

Before actually executing the libvirt-bin stop logic, it calls the first
script witch shutdown each vm's, when that script ends (after every vm
is gracefully halted), the libvirt-bin init script continues.
