[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools
@Nate, Yeah, a number of the added depends and recommends lead back to X stuff. I'm not sure if it could be purely a dummy package - would any of this stuff brought in from the old toolbox package cause problems on a system with no X11 present? (Heck, if they don't, then a single unified package would work just fine.) /etc/vmware-tools/xautostart.conf /etc/xdg/autostart/vmware-user.desktop /usr/bin/vmware-xdg-detect-de /usr/lib/open-vm-tools/plugins/vmusr/libdesktopEvents.so /usr/lib/open-vm-tools/plugins/vmusr/libdndcp.so /usr/lib/open-vm-tools/plugins/vmusr/libresolutionSet.so /usr/lib/open-vm-tools/plugins/vmusr/libunity.so The best 'shape' of that eventual solution as far as packages and their names, I'm not sure on. open-vm-tools for CLI // open-vm-tools-gui for GUI open-vm-tools for CLI // open-vm-toolbox for GUI open-vm-tools-cli for CLI // open-vm-tools for GUI open-vm-tools-cli for CLI // open-vm-tools-gui for GUI open-vm-tools-nox for CLI // open-vm-tools for GUI I'm really not sure what naming scheme would be the most Ubuntu- appropriate, but I'd personally have no complaint with any of those variants. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to open-vm-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/604998 Title: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/604998/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools
@Shane, I assume your referring to the dependencies of: xauth, xserver-xorg- input-vmmouse, and xserver-xorg-video-vmware. I don't know if xdg-utils is a X-related Package or not. But I have 2 options, which could use input. And for the record, I'm going to add to my August release proposal (which will be a brand new one) 1) Create a package called "open-vm-tools-gui," which will include only X-related packages, and depend on open-vm-tools. So it technically will be a dummy file (I think). I don't know how to have the package auto-install if it detects that Ubuntu isn't running a server. This option is also troublesome, I think you know why. If this option chosen, I might create a proposal for Oneiric-Proposed. 2) I can't remember my original #2, but here's an alternate. Approve my proposal (which one has be added for Precise), so that we have something to work with. [Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools
See bug #776103 (and my comment on it). The toolbox package was removed, so X11-related components (and all the dependencies that come with them) were merged into this package - the description for which is still "(CLI tools)". Currently, this package is not usable on server systems which must not have X11 installed. @Nate - I hate to rain on your parade here, as it looks like it was quite a struggle to get everything working right for this package (and certainly, thanks a lot for your efforts). The introduction of X11 dependencies into what is ostensibly a CLI package is not a good thing for those of us who have server systems which should not have X11. Please review bug #604998, and bug #391224 which put that situation in place (as well as Debian bug 561639, where that change was immediately rejected) - a --no-install-recommends workaround worked, except for those of us who wanted to automate the install with something like puppet. This change, to merge the X11 support components into the CLI tools package, has taken that situation from bad to worse, and has rendered this package completely unusable on systems that must not have X11 - I'm surprised that this change moved forward after bug #604998 was confirmed. [Bug 875525] Re: cgroup-bin upstart job does not handle the package being removed but not purged properly
Hi Clint, is it really valid to require an upstart job for package X to check that other scripts installed by package X are in fact installed? If so this is trivial to add, but it seems over the top to worry about the upstart job failing (with no further ill effects on the host, IIUC) if the package is in a bad state. Put another way, you say the upstart job should 'exit gracefully', but really the upstart job should fail under this condition! Dear Steve, I am unable to report any further details about this bug, since I upgraded a month ago and my computer crashed. With other complications in the way of fixing the laptop, I wasn't able to fix it until last week. My fix is actually a complete re-install of Natty, then upgraded to Onieric. That said, I do not have the same configurations on my laptop, which happens to cause many of the bug I was facing to disappear. Therefore, I think it is safe to say that this bug is incomplete or fixed.
