[Blueprint servercloud-p-move-ec2-mirrors-to-s3] Move EC2 mirrors to S3
Blueprint changed by Ben Howard: Whiteboard changed: Rationale: S3 is a faster, more scalable technology that allows us to reduce costs and increase availability for EC2 users. Assumption: * Running on-EC2 mirrors is expensive and presents availability challenges. * on-EC2 mirrors have limited bandwidth and thus speeds can be affected by load * S3 has very high availability * S3 intra-region bandwidth is free * on-EC2 mirrors results in bandwidth charges when users use a mirror outside the availability zone * S3 is extremely fast. Generally speeds to S3 access are near-native * Amazon has asked for us to host our mirrors on S3 * Uploads to S3 are free A prototyped-S3 mirror will be shown at UDS. ___ UDS Example S3 Mirror Example for Oneiric (Mirror will be active until Wednesday 01 Nov 2011). THIS IS AN EXAMPLE, PROOF OF CONCEPT MIRROR ONLY. ] Q. 'LAN' bandwidth access to the region mirrors is currently free already, no? -- Daviey A. All upload and intra-zone transit is free. Q. How do you keep people out of EC2 from access? A. Bucket policies enable restricting access to the Amazon CIDR address. Comments: - Can this whiteboard be pre-filed with some examples of how others have implemented this? * AFAIK, there is only one implementation of S3 buckets. Most other examples that I know of use S3 as a storage backend, while having an EC2 instance front the S3 storage. Amazon Linux AMI is the only pure S3 backend/frontend solution. - How would this work? * There are a number of ways to push out a repository using existing tools. s3fuse (albeit rather buggy) allows you to mount a s3 bucket as file system. s3cmd allows for local to remote synchronization. However, in order to build something that scales well, you need something that uses multiple connections and pushes multiple files at once (i.e. threading and boto python library) * Example syncronization code can be found at lp:~utlemming/+junk/s3repo_tool (this code will be used to populate the prototyped-S3 mirror for UDS. -- Examples: Amazon Linux AMI currently uses S3 for backing the mirrors. The design is more or less: - One bucket per region. - Buckets are named off of the DNS CNAME, i.e. "us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com" + + + --- Work + + utlemming: Add APT Meta-parsing to script [TODO] + utlemming: Make script atomic [TODO] + utlemming: Document process [TODO] + IS Dept: Add EC2 CNAMES [TODO] + IS Dept: Deploy solution [TODO] - a method of pushing pristine repositories up -- Move EC2 mirrors to S3 https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-p-move-ec2-mirrors-to-s3 -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 820715] Re: sudo poweroff -n within a container just hangs
@Clint, hmm, no I don't remember and can't find it. cjwatson may remember. @xlyz, you'll need to at least allow the containers to have mknod in the container for udev to succeed. (You can do that using the container's config file). But I was actually suggesting just doing the upgrade in a chroot as part of initial setup. It should be possible to automate this as a part of the ubuntu template. [Bug 586546] Re: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server
Okay, so after pushing Byobu for several years as a default command line experience within Ubuntu, I'm raising the white flag and surrendering :-( We released Ubuntu 11.10 and enabled Byobu-by-default in our EC2 cloud images. Despite numerous compliments and thank-you's, the praise is not universal. Some vocal users just really despise the feature and are threatening to fork the Ubuntu cloud community. We've made it as simple as we can to opt out of it, but that's just not enough for some people. * http://groups.google.com/group/ec2ubuntu/browse_frm/thread/2046f97812244952 I've just committed revisions 1728 and 1729 to lp:byobu that approaches this from the opposite direction -- enabling Byobu lovers an easy way to ALWAYS enable byobu on launch. As of byobu-4.46, you should be able to simply add to your local system's ~/.bashrc: "export LC_BYOBU=1", and everywhere you ssh into, that has byobu >= 4.46, should launch automatically. Basically, I've added this code to: #/etc/profile.d/Z97-byobu.sh: if [ "$LC_BYOBU" = "1" ] && [ -r "/usr/bin/byobu-launch" ]; then . /usr/bin/byobu-launch fi true This could, perhaps, be a candidate for SRU to 11.10, if smoser and utlemming want to back out the byobu-by-default setting there. ** Changed in: byobu (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586546 Title: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/byobu/+bug/586546/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
