[Bug 962393] Re: Installation loops in db-config-common when ran from software-center

2012-03-22 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Maybe the problem is that software-center spawns debconf-communicate
with the user id instead of as root:

alkisg7368 1.7 0.5 65404 23364 pts/1Sl+ 07:48 0:00
/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/bin/debconf-communicate

I tried making a debconf-communicate wrapper, to force running it as root
instead, and everything worked fine again:
$ cat /usr/bin/debconf-communicate
#!/bin/sh
exec sudo -E /usr/bin/debconf-communicate.real "$@"

Of course to avoid sudo prompts, I've setup sudoers to not require a
password for debconf-communicate.real for my user id.

[Bug 962393] Re: Installation loops in db-config-common when ran from software-center

2012-03-22 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I tried: gdebi-gtk /var/cache/apt/archives/phpmyadmin_4%3a3.4.10.1-1_all.deb
without using sudo, and everything worked fine again, the debconf password
questions were displayed.

So the bug is probably in software-center.

for Precise?

If so, when should we create one? (seems like, at the earliest, when
Client's branch gets merged...)

[Bug 962393] Re: Installation loops in db-config-common when ran from software-center

I ran software-center from the console, and I noticed this error:

Then I tried from scratch, by running ***sudo*** software-center

the bug is either in software-center or in dbconfig-common.

will use to migrate to natty. If no new cloud image will be produced, I

[Blueprint servercloud-p-arm-openmpi] Update OpenMPI to the 1.5 version with ARM support

2012-03-22 Thread Antonio Rosales
Blueprint changed by Antonio Rosales:

Whiteboard changed:
+ Note: FFe for Precise OpenMPI 1.5 accepted per
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openmpi/+bug/889644
+
Nothing to discuss, we just either update the existing one or add another
package version into the archive. -robbie.w
Added a bug task to track activity. -- Daviey

There seems to have been some rudimentary support for ARM added in the
  past (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openmpi/+bug/438433).
What exactly is the functionality/use case that we need to add, and how
would I verify that it is complete? --rbasak

rbasak, lets discuss it in a regular meeting - can you raise it please?
  Thanks -- Daviey

rbasak, does openmpi 1.5 have features you want for server? The BP
is not clear about whether you want to replace 1.4 or have both versions (1.5
is labeled beta by upstream)
since if you want 1.5 arm FTBFS should not be a blocker and we
should have it synced from experimental so it gets enough testing

  Work Items:
decide if we want to have 2 versions in universe, i.e. -stable and -feature:
DONE
sync 1.5 version package from Debian experimental: POSTPONED
Prepare 1.5 package for upload to the archive: DONE
Upload 1.5 package to the archive: DONE

[Blueprint servercloud-p-kronos] XCP Kronos support

2012-03-22 Thread Dave Walker
Blueprint changed by Dave Walker:

Whiteboard changed:
  Session Notes:

  AGENDA:
  - What is XCP and Kronos?
  - Current state of Project Kronos
  - Work remaining (porting and packaging)
  - Ubuntu next-steps?

  - Could we used clustered LVM instead of our own version? Perhaps, but we
haven't investigated that yet.
  - Can we ship XCP's modified LVM with Ubuntu? Yes, it is conceivable that
this could work. Some patches could even be upstreamed, but likely not all of
them.

[Bug 959426] Re: nova services start before mysql on boot

2012-03-22 Thread David Kranz
I just wasted three hours on this one. It is the same as the ubuntu bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nova/+bug/959426

My path was as a successful diablo deployer/developer trying to get
essex working using a single node to make it easier. Or so I thought.
Many people will be hurt by this bug in the near future. It at least
needs to be highlighted in the nova install docs if it is not fixed.

[Bug 962560] [NEW] pam-auth-update Account-Type should be "Additional"

2012-03-22 Thread Ray Link
Public bug reported:

Currently, libpam-ldap provides a pam-auth-update stub that inserts
pam_ldap into the authorization stack as Account-Type: Primary.

Unfortunately, this means that, should pam_unix (also Account-Type:
Primary) succeed, pam_ldap will never be checked. It also means that
anything wishing to conflict with pam_ldap by providing a stub with
"Conflicts: ldap" and a properly-behaving "Account-Type: Additional"
will not actually end up conflicting with the misplaced pam_ldap.

In general, while the "Auth" stack is permissive (once one succeeds, the
user has proven their identity, there's no sense in running additional
authentication checks, so you skip checking the rest and just let the
user through) and are thus perfectly suited to be Auth-Type: Primary,
the "Account" (authorization) stack is essentially a gauntlet of
potential denials, meaning every single PAM module should be run
(Account-Type: Additional) to check for an authorization failure, even
if others have already succeeded.

See Debian bugs #583483, #583492, and especially response #20 to Debian
bug #610888.

[Bug 948461] Re: apt-get hashsum/size mismatch because s3 mirrors don't support http pipelining correctly

2012-03-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

- SRU Justification
+ [Problem]
+ When using S3 mirrors, the apt client requests files A,B,C,D in the same
request, but S3 responds with files B,C,D,A or some other arbitrary ordering.
Apt then saves the files under the wrong file names.
+
+ This is due to a bug in Amazon AWS S3, where http pipelining does not
+ work in violation of RFC 2068. apt uses http pipelining currently, so
+ this prevents apt from using mirrors hosted on S3 cloud instances.
+
  [Impact]
- EC2 Instances cannot reliably use the new S3 Mirrors.
-
- Currently Canonical IS runs mirrors on instances in each EC2
- Availability zone. Ben Howard has put infrastructure in place to run
- these mirrors entirely out of Amazon's S3. This will give better
- performance and reliability for Ubuntu users in EC2.
-
- There is a bug in the S3 HTTP implementation that is exposed when using
- apt with the pipelining turned on. Therefore, we cannot put these S3
- mirrors in place until after this fix is released.
+ Blocks use of S3 mirrors for providing ubuntu updates. Affects Hardy, Lucid,
Maverick, Oneiric, Natty, and Precise.
+
+ Use of S3 mirrors is considered as a way of enhancing our mirror
+ services. Currently mirrors have moments of instability, so having the
+ option of switching to S3 mirrors is very important for update
+ reliability.

  [Development Fix]
- On installation or upgrade, cloud-init will populate
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/90cloud-init-pipelining with:
- //Written by cloud-init per 'apt_pipelining
-   Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth 0
-
- After that, this will happen only once "per instance". The user can disable
this function if they do not want it by modifying that file, or by providing
cloud-init with userdata like:
- #cloud-config
- apt_pipelining: 0
-
- This was first included in cloud-init upstream at revision 536, and into
- Ubuntu precise in 0.6.3~bzr539-0ubuntu1 .
-
- [1] http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-init-dev/cloud-
- init/trunk/revision/536
+ Fixed in Precise's cloud-init as of these comments, which adds an
apt_pipelining option, turned off by default but configurable.
+ http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-init-dev/cloud-init/trunk/revision/537

  [Stable Fix]
- Identical logic and behavior to the upstream fix has been ported back to each
of 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 11.10.
+ TODO

  [Text Case]
  1) Launch an instance in EC2
- $ ubuntu-ec2-run $SUITE
- 2) Select the S3 mirrors:
-sed -i.dist
"s,ec2.archive.ubuntu.com,ec2.archive.ubuntu.com.s3.amazonaws.com,g"
/etc/apt/sources.list
+ 2) Run: sed -i
"s,ec2.archive.ubuntu.com,ec2.archive.ubuntu.com.s3.amazonaws.com,g"
/etc/apt/sources.list
+ 3.) Set your apt debug levels to whatever you want
  4) Run "apt-get -y update"
- 5) Run "apt-get --download-only -y install firefox xorg libreoffice"
-
- Alternatively for 4 and 5 you can just use the attachment 'apt-get
- download loop'
-
- Broken Behavior:
- Apt will fail eventually with 'Hash sum Mismatch' or some other download
error.
-
- Fixed Behavior:
- Run apt-get download forever with no errors.
+ 5) Run "apt-get -y install firefox xorg libreoffice > /tmp/install.log 2>&1"
+ Broken Behavior: Cached files are being misnamed
+ Fixed Behavior: Cached files are properly named
+
+ The S3 EC2 mirrors seem to reproduce it most reliably. The downloaded
+ files are whole and match the proper checksums, but they have the wrong
+ content.

  [Regression Potential]
- The potential is present for performance regression due to disabling
pipelining.
- However, enabling pipelining in apt was argued against by Robert Collins, an
upstream squid developer. He has stated it is a "micro enhancement", and
causes significant issues for many clients.
- SRU Justification
+ http pipelining is an optimization technique in apt which allows multiple
requests to be made at the same time. When it works, it provides a small
performance boost, but when it doesn't the failures are arbitrary and not
adequately explained.
+
+ Thus, the expected regression is slightly slower apt behavior for non-S3
+ cloud users. However, testing shows the impact is less than a few
+ seconds so will likely be unnoticed. In the off chance that it does
+ inadvertently cause non-trivial performance impact, the change is
+ configurable on a per-host instance.

  [Original Report]
  [SRU: Cloud-Init]
  r536 and r537 contains a fix that:
1.) Disables APT pipelining on first boot for new Cloud Images instances
2.) Disables APT pipelining on installation for existing cloud-images.

The rational for this SRU is due to the Mirror situation for EC2 Cloud
images. Currently, the mirrors are proving to have moments of
instability that is causing both end-user and development pain. In order
to address this, we built out Amazon AWS S3 mirrors. Unfortantly, due to
a bug in S3, apt http pipeling doe

So the package in lucid-proposed will not be promoted to lucid-updates.

[Bug 962503] [NEW] mysql fails to start due to error in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld

2012-03-22 Thread heynnema
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded from 32-bit Oneiric to 64-bit Oneirc with a fresh
install. After manually reinstalling my desired apps, I find that mysql
(which is being used by MythTV 0.24, in my case) won't start. I know
that I reported this exact same error years ago, but only to find that
it's still hanging around.

The file /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld has two errors in it.

Lines 36 and 37 are wrong, and,

need to change from:
  /{,var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid w,
  /{,var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock w,

to:
  /{,var/}run/mysqld/mysqld.pid w,
  /{,var/}run/mysqld/mysqld.sock w,

Cheers, Al

[Bug 962507] [NEW] [FFE] Latest juju snapshot enables maas provider

2012-03-22 Thread Clint Byrum
Public bug reported:

The MaaS provider has been added and tests as working in upstream juju.
Without this provider, users of the distro version of juju will not be
able to use juju with MaaS.

Also, there have been a number of important bug fixes, one very
important one is to allow nodes to be rebooted without losing connection
to juju.

Re-instate security group delete test case

While fixing lp#956366, we realized that it's fine to delete a security
group referenced by an ingress rule of another security group because
the ingress rule gets deleted.

Re-instate the test for this specific case, but test that the ingress
rule gets deleted rather than an exception being thrown.

[Bug 956581] Re: Stack Buffer Overflow in HTTP Manager

2012-03-22 Thread Steve Beattie
Hi Paul,

When compiling with your added patches, a new compiler warning pops up:

+chan_sip.c: In function 'parse_register_contact':
+chan_sip.c:13312:2: warning: implicit declaration of function
'parse_uri_legacy_check' [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]

greping through the source, I don't see parse_uri_legacy_check() referenced
anywhere except in debian/patches/AST-2011-012.diff ; is this actually correct?
Was this function added after 1.8.4.4?

I've updated your debdiff to include DEP-3 references and CVE references in the
changelog, it's attached. If you end up re-submitting, can you please base off
it?

Thanks.

[Bug 881464] Re: [MIR] keystone

2012-03-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thanks Adam, I'll let you decide on the log FTBFS, but a properly
formatted DEP-3 commented patch the describes why we are doing this and
disables those specific tests seems fine to me provided that changes to
keystone should not affect how it works with swift (ie, it is preferable
to not leave a hole in our testing).

[Bug 645625] Re: lxc container can power-off host machine

2012-03-22 Thread maxadamo
don't want to argue, but may I ask why you decided to tag the urgency of this
issue as "low"?
One can stop 30 containers and the host machine and the host machine, by
issuing a simple command on one of the containers and you say urgency is just
"low"? Wasn't it at least "medium", if not "high"?
cheers.

[Bug 881464] Re: [MIR] keystone

2012-03-22 Thread Adam Gandelman
I spent some time on this yestreaday, to clarify-

I don't really see the git checkouts an issue. The pending test to
swift tests that do this do so only if there is an error importing it
from already installed libraries. That is, it should be imported
locally instead of cloned remotely if we list it with Build-Depends.
The same should be true of keystoneclient, if its not we can probably
patch that easily enough (I'm not able to confirm that the
keystoneclient tests are actually running, though, as that would have
turned up already)

The bigger problem AFAICS is that the python-swift library used makes an
unconditional call to setup a logging handler via /dev/log, which is
causing these FTBFS:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/97807065/buildlog_ubuntu-
precise-i386.keystone_2012.1%2Bgit201203212030-0ubuntu1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

We can either disable these swift tests (since they appear to be more
integration tests that are actually exercising swift more than
keystone), or we can probably carry a small patch to swift as well as a
corresponding patch to any test suite that uses it, to make log setup
optional.

[Bug 881464] Re: [MIR] keystone

2012-03-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Here are the options I see going forward, in preferred order of precedence:
1. patch the keystone testsuite to work against installed Ubuntu packages (and
therefore adding swift and keystoneclient to Build-Depends). This will allow
the security, QA and SRU teams to have higher confidence that patches don't
break keystone when used against the packages in the archive
2. disable the tests that require git and document somewhere (README.Debian?)
how the keystone testsuite can be run against Ubuntu installed packages
3. do nothing

I don't really see '3' as an option since keystone is going to be
supported for 5 years and upstream git is going to be constantly
evolving while the keystone testsuite being used in the package is going
to be static. This means potentially more and more problems when people
try to use the integration tests in their personal testing (which we
should be doing).

'2' is acceptable but far less desirable as it will also require a QRT
script.

[Bug 962389] [NEW] juju Recommends on lxc installs libvirt-bin which causes problems when testing in virtualized environments

2012-03-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

In performing the juju MIR, I setup OpenStack using
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/TestingOpenStack. This installs
openstack in a libvirt managed VM and public addresses for openstack
instances show up on the 192.168.122.0.0/24 network. This works great
with euca2ools.

However, with juju this fails because 'juju bootstrap' installs juju for
the agents on the instances, but juju Recommends lxc, which pulls in
libvirt-bin. Upon install, libvirt-bin configures its default network
(192.168.122.0/24) and all of sudden the instance is unreachable. This
is a known problem with running libvirt in a libvirt VM and the host
libvirt network and the guest libvirt networks must not overlap.

The security team uses libvirt extensively for testing and this makes it
problematic to test juju with openstack. Others will undoubtedly want to
perform similar testing for enterprise rollouts or for QA.

A workaround is to have the OpenStack VM run in another network, eg
192.168.123.0/24 (but this is painful for people who already have many
machines configured to use the default libvirt network).

Several options exist:
* split out juju-lxc and move it to Suggests, and have juju suggest installing
it when configuring 'local:' environments
* split out the juju agents (juju-core?) and have juju only install that in
instances instead of 'juju'
* have juju use --no-install-recommends when installing 'juju' on instances

[Bug 962383] [NEW] ec2-key-pair went away, but juju doesn't say it is unsupported

2012-03-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Apparently people should be using 'authorized-keys' or 'authorized-keys-
path' in environments.yaml. 'ec2-key-pair' is found in google and it
would be good if juju checked that it was specified and that people
should instead use 'authorized-keys' or 'authorized-keys-path'. This
would save people some time.

It might also be nice that the documentation states that juju injects
this ssh key differently than EC2 and that people should not expect for
the former value of ec2-key-pair to show up in 'euca-describe-
instances'. In other words, whey I use 'euca-run-instanaces -k mykey' I
expect to see 'running mykey' in 'euca-describe-instances output. With
juju, we see 'running None' now, but that is expected with how juju is
working (but unexpected if used to EC2).

[Bug 962373] [NEW] unhelpful error message when .ssh/known_hosts doesn't match

2012-03-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

In testing juju against openstack, I found that whenever I would 'juju
destroy-environment' and then 'juju bootstrap' when I would try to use juju
commands I would
$ juju bootstrap
$ juju ssh 0
$ juju destroy-environment
$ juju bootstrap
$ juju ssh 0
...
2012-03-22 12:03:54,459 ERROR SSH forwarding error:
@@@

This is unhelpful. This happens because the ip address allocated in the
first bootstrap is reused in the second, and the host keys change. It
would be better if juju would say that the keys changed (and possibly
something about how to fix it-- but don't make it too easy; we want
people to know that this is a problem).

[Bug 881464] Re: [MIR] keystone

2012-03-22 Thread Chuck Short
With regards to the testsuite for keystone.

The testsuite included in keystone contain both functional and
integration tests. An example of this keystone integration with
keystoneclient, or swift with keystone. In order to run these tests, the
tests do a git checkout of both swift and keystone when the tests are
run. This make the tests not use what we will have in the archive for
swift and keystone (ie make it less static) which is not good for us and
less than ideal. I think we need to have options going forward.

ok then I said it before upstart is a complete mystery to me.

so when autofs is started start-ypbind is actually blocking autofs ??
and only when start-ypbind is started is autofs actually started??

if you say so but I do not understand the configuration that makes this
happen.

if I look into start-ypbind it gets started and then only waits for
ypbind to start. That is all. why is autofs not started while this wait
is happening ?

autofs now have no condition other than runlevel so I do not see why it
would wait on ypbind.

Note that the default log level doesn't produce much output, changing

handlers=file

produces output in /var/log/keystone/keystone.log that is comparable to
what you'd get running it in non-daemon mode.

Could you please verify if this is still present. There is no longer a
'--ipv4' flag in Ubuntu's euca2ools, but rather we output the public and
private IP addresses in the 13 and 14 (from memory) tab delimited fields.

So, if you still get wrong data in those fields, please say so.

Note, I think I saw this yesterday. I associated an IP with:

euca-associate-addr --instance-id

Then, describe-instances did not show it, even though the system was
reachable.
I asked Adam Gandalman about it, and he suggested running the above command
again (even though it would fail). I did that, and then subsequently the
addresses showed up.
Adam also noted that he believed this is now fixed upstream by a process that
runs on the nodes and updates the data every so often. So it is basically
eventually consistent.

If I'm right above, then this is a nova bug at this point, and it is
probably fixed.

  Could you confirm?

[Bug 962001] Re: Nfs mount hangs while automounting home

2012-03-22 Thread Alex Bachmeier
I believe I have narrowed down the bug to a race condition with the 10.04 sever
and its exported nfs4 shares. The nfs client tries to mount the nfs4 shares and
get caught in a loop. The workaround for this is forcing nfs3 in the
auto.master using:
"/home /etc/autofs/auto.home vers=3,--timeout=120"

I'm marking the bug as invalid, since this is not a problem with autofs
itself.

autofs does not need to do this - its already done by the start-ypbind

the above does work (and is what start-ypbind does) - its just

[Bug 962150] Re: openvswitch-datapath-dkms neads linux-headers

2012-03-22 Thread James Page
Hi Dave

Looking at the dependencies of this package - specifically dkms:

Recommends: fakeroot, menu | sudo, linux-headers-686-pae | linux-
headers-amd64 | linux-headers-generic | linux-headers, linux-image

I think that this is not a direct dependency because you have to ensure
that the correct headers are installed for the type of kernel you are
using.

What type of kernel is your VM using?
