[Blueprint servercloud-r-bigdata-fs] Bigdata Filesystem Support in Ubuntu

2012-11-02 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:
+
+ Frank is deploying a hyperscale hadoop cluster for processing
+ clickstream data from websites across the world. He selects QFS for its
+ sequential write performance and native support on ARM as a backing
+ store for Hadoop and he is able to easily deploy it using Juju and MaaS.
+
+ Jane wants to deploy a more random bigdata workload using HBase; she is
+ easily able to deploy Ceph alongside HBase using Juju and MaaS.

  Risks:

+ Support for ARM from Ceph or QFS proves non-performant
+
  Test Plans:

+ Build support into Hadoop charms for QFS and Ceph, test ease of
+ deployment.
+
  Release Note:
+
+ Ubuntu 12.10 includes the Quantcast File System (QFS), a lightweight,
+ high-performance alternative to Hadoop HDFS.
+
+ Ceph 0.5x includes support for using Ceph as an alternative to Hadoop
+ HDFS.

[Blueprint servercloud-r-ceph] Ceph Activities for Raring

2012-11-02 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:

Franks want to use Ceph as a back end for Openstack Cinder and Glance
and take advantage of the fast copy-on-right cloning of block devices
supported in Ceph Bobtail. He is able to deploy this using Juju and MaaS
on hardware on Ubuntu 12.04 using the Grizzly Cloud Archive.

Ben wants to deploy an Ubuntu archive mirror in his new public cloud.
He's able todo this using Juju with Ceph and the RADOS gateway charms
using the existing tooling he uses for managing his archive mirror in
  Amazon ec2.

Tanya wants to use the upstart integration for Ceph with XFS as the
underlying filesystem. She is able todo this using the packages in
  Ubuntu 13.04.

James want to ensure the quality of the Ceph packages in the Ubuntu
archive at all times; as the packages include DEP-8 tests these are used
to gate uploads into the main development archive.

Toby wants to use an LTS release of Ceph with Openstack Folsom on Ubuntu
12.04. The cloud archive provides him with the required packages.
-
- Out of scope:
-
- Ceph RADOS Gateway integration with Openstack Keystone to replace Swift.

  Risks:

Insufficent hardware resources to perform multi-node testing of Ceph on
hardware.
Upgrade path to Ceph with upstart breaks badly.
Openstack integration with Ceph breaks during Grizzly development.

  Test Plans:

Ceph as a backend for Openstack in the Openstack CI Lab providing per-
commit testing of Openstack with Ceph.

DEP-8 automated testing of Ceph providing gated entry of Ceph packages
  into the Ubuntu Archive.

Single node testing of Ceph using UTAH.

Multi-node testing of Ceph on a regular basis using Juju charms.

  Release Note:

Ubuntu 13.04 include the latest Ceph LTS release, 0.5x.x 'Bobtail'.
This release includes support for fast copy-on-write cloning of Ceph
RADOS block devices and performance and stability improvements in Ceph
OSD. The packaging also include upstart configurations for Ceph which
provide an alternative, more automated way to manage a Ceph cluster,

Ceph 0.5x.x is also avaliable in the Cloud Archive for Openstack
  Grizzly.

[Blueprint servercloud-r-juju-appserver-support] Juju support for application server technologies (Django, JEE, RoR, etc)

2012-11-02 Thread Bruno Girin
Blueprint changed by Bruno Girin:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:

As a sysop, I want to deploy a web application container on a cloud
  node.

As a developer, I want to create a Juju charm to deploy my web
application on any compatible container. Example of compatible
container: Django app => Django container; JEE .war => servlet container
(e.g. Apache Tomcat) or JEE app server (e.g. JBoss); JEE .ear or .jar =>
  JEE app server (e.g. JBoss)

As a sysop, I want to deploy a web application onto a compatible
  container node.

As a sysop, I want to define a named data source in a web app node and
add a relationship to a database node for that data source.

  Risks:

  Test Plans:

  Release Note:
+
+ Why is this important
+ - Application servers come before Apps
+ - Private/Enterprise apps are more numerous than public apps
+ - Deployment needs to be easier/simpler because testing suffers when
deployment is difficult
+ --- jitsu import/export for above ?
+ - Connect named resources to app without app specifically knowing about it
+ - Scalability as needed

[Bug 1074443] [NEW] Please upgrade ipmitool to 1.8.12 for 13.04

2012-11-02 Thread Kent Baxley
Public bug reported:

Please consider upgrading ipmitool to 1.8.12 for the next Ubuntu
release.

1.8.11 has been out for 3 years now.

1.8.12 has numerous bug fixes and includes the new DELL OEM commands for
the 12G PowerEdge Servers.

The ChangeLog is pretty big so I'm including it as an attachment.

This package is currently not in debian-unstable.

[Bug 1074460] [NEW] kvm: windows xp installation hangs after "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration"

2012-11-02 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Public bug reported:

Attempting to build a Windows XP virt using KVM results in a black
screen after the familiar "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware
configuration". No matter how long I wait there is no apparent progress
of any kind and the VM CPU is pegged.

Very similar to: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=684288. However, that report indicates the
problem was fixed upstream in a version prior to what is provided with
12.10. So, perhaps the problem has reappeared.

I have started Quantal as a VM from the DVD-iso and following you find
the results of the lsusb commands. Unfortunately, I cannot give you the

todays log entries as an attachment.

[Bug 974938] Re: Process "gsettings" prevents logging in

2012-11-02 Thread Jeff Davis
In my case the libnss-ldapd appears to have fixed the problem... Now I
need to investigate a bit more. it also removed nscd and replaced with
nslcd. From what I'm reading so far libnss-ldapd is more robust and
causes fewer issues. Would be curious if anyone else's experience is
similar.
