[Bug 1101002] Re: Frequently stops working for 15-30 seconds at a time on Ubuntu 12.10
Thanks for the extra information. Based on these logs, bind9 is behaving as expected, but your system is querying the dnsmasq and not bind, so this is why it's not working for you. Since this isn't a bug in bind9, I'm marking this bug as invalid in bind9. The instructions you've followed need to be updated, since editing resolv.conf manually does not work by itself since 12.04. See https://www.stgraber.org/2012/02/24/dns-in-ubuntu-12-04/ for details. I understand what you're trying to do and why you're trying to do it, but it won't work the way you're trying to do it. Specifying two resolv.conf nameserver entries that return different responses as your guide does it is wrong anyway. Since Ubuntu desktop uses dnsmasq since 12.04, the easiest way to achieve what you need might be to adapt the dnsmasq section of the guide you're using, but I'm not familiar enough with dnsmasq to give you guidance here. In any case, as this isn't a bug this bug tracker isn't really the right venue. You could try looking on askubuntu.com and ask on there if you can't find an existing question that solves your problem. ** Changed in: bind9 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bind9 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1101002 Title: Frequently stops working for 15-30 seconds at a time on Ubuntu 12.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bind9/+bug/1101002/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

The ubuntu- sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. In the event that this is in fact not a patch you can resolve this situation by removing the tag 'patch' from the bug report and editing the attachment so that it is not flagged as a patch. [Bug 1100787] Re: Samba 3.6.3 segfault or panic.
I ran tdbtool to check the tdb files while winbind was working properly and they all reported OK. I ran it again after killing winbind, after it crashed, and again they all showed up as being OK. I was also beginning to think it was a hardware memory fault as we recently added extra RAM to the server. But the Ubuntu server is running as a VM under VMWare ESXi and none of the other VMs (or the hypervisor itself for that matter) on the server are having errors. The physical server itself also uses ECC memory so I would have that would have caught any errors. We'll run a full memory diagnostic on the physical server when we get a chance during the next couple of days. I'm having a little trouble running apport-collect at the moment. I just get connection timed out errors. Googling the issue, it looks like it's because we are behind a proxy (our local squid proxy forwards all traffic to our ISPs proxy). I'll look into running winbind under valgrind. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1100787 Title: Samba 3.6.3 segfault or panic. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. [Bug 325111]

That's a separate issue from displaying the full server address.I actually have some where a subnet has the several servers, and I can't tell them apart; the initial part of the IP address matches several machines, and some machines have both A and records...so the names aren't unique either. it isn't pretty. As far as the reference address - I thought that for IPv6, the refid was a hash of the IPv6 address - which means it's already a nonce. There's some small probability of a collision (2 + n in 4 billion - 1 for IPv4 and 1 for IPv6 + the possibility that an IP address or hash turns out to be one of the refclock tags - e.g. .GPS., .PPS., .INIT etc - in binary). Now that bits are cheaper, perhaps NTPv5 can allocate 136 bits -- 8 for an entity id (IPv4 address, IPv6 address, and Refclock to start with) + a full IPv6 address at the end of the packet. Oooh - NTPv5? Well, maybe not. Just think of all the firewalls and other chaos ;-) In any case, displaying the full server IP address would be a big help. I don't have a strong opinion on whether the expanded format should require a command-line switch - such as -w. IPv6 will require any scripts that parse the text to change anyway - and humans won't care. But it would be a way to guarantee backward compatibility. Anyhow, after 4 years, it would be nice to see this addressed...IPv6 IS gathering steam. [Bug 325111]
Good idea, and the "problem" is the refid is a 32-bit structure. Its purpose is for loop detection - to make sure machine A doesn't believe time from machine B if machine B is getting its time from A. [Bug 325111]
A thought: Cisco IOS (routers) solved this by putting IPv6 addresses on their own line, then indenting the following line so that the columns line up. This is pretty easy for scripts that parse the output to accomodate, and visually it works, at least for me. And since they have deployed a solution, it would be nice to be consistent (I'm not affiliated with cisco, but I am a user.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/325111 Title: ntpq output truncates IPv6 addresses To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ntp/+bug/325111/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
