OK, but ... I thought I also read earlier in the thread that the only way a user of the precise package is likely to have gotten it working is with the "external" dnsmasq service, which leads us right to this will only break upgrades for people who worked to manually set things up so it would function. Clearly I'm still missing something. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to maas in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1109283 Title: [SRU] maas to Quantal and Precise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas/+bug/1109283/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1109283] Re: [SRU] maas to Quantal and Precise
@Nobuto, Thanks for your input, but as described in the wikipage (which no longer exists) it was *a* way of configuring a DHCP server, not *the* prime way of configuring one. Either way, MAAS itself is *NOT* aware if there's a DHCP server configured or not. @Scott, Yes, changes won't be lost, but they would/could still be used. So, Cobbler-MAAS is *not* aware of it having a DHCP server. Since cobbler "manages" it, MAAS doesn't really know whether the DHCP server has been configured or not. So in reality, this service is external from MAAS. In this case, if we were to upgrade to the SRU package, the DHCP should continue to work and should continue to tell MAAS nodes were they should be booting from because this still remains as a service external to MAAS. Now, since the SRU version of MAAS can be DNS/DHCP aware, and if the user wants MAAS to manage this, then the user will have to manually migrate from using the "external" dnsmasq to using a MAAS managed DNS/DHCP service, which is what I believe Julian was trying to say. Hope this helps.

Scott, "If they did edit it and have a working system and then install the update, what will happen? If I'm reading you right, their changes, that made the system work, will be lost. Is that right?" If they were to upgrade to a cobbler based MAAS version, then yes their changes (in /etc/dnsmasq.conf) will be lost because cobbler will overwrite this file as explained above. If they upgrade to the proposed SRU (which is cobblerless MAAS), their changes in /etc/dnsmasq.conf won't be lost because the SRU'd version of MAAS does not use dnsmasq, since it runs its own instance of isc-dhcp, and ships its own config file, leases file, etc. Hope this answer your questions.

I would also like to add the following: The non-recommend implementation of cobbler based maas-dhcp will always destroy user configuration because cobbler will always generate the file "/etc/dnsmasq.conf". When a does manual configuration for their dnsmasq service (regardless of whether they are using Cobbler MAAS DNS/DHCP), these changes will be lost because cobbler will always overwrite these file. (So if someone upgrades cobbler, these changes will be lost because cobbler will generate a new file) This also means that cobbler does not run its own instance of dnsmasq, but it uses the default dnsmasq service, generating a file in "/etc/dnsmasq.conf" and consequently overwriting users changes. This is something that we see as bad implementation. The SRU fixes this issue because it runs its own instance of DHCP/DNS, which doesn't change or affect any user configuration as MAAS manages its own files/instances of the service, and does not overwrite any manual configuration to services in /etc/. Hope this helps -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to maas in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1109283 Title: [SRU] maas to Quantal and Precise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas/+bug/1109283/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1109283] Re: [SRU] maas to Quantal and Precise
I wanted to avoid involvement with this SRU as I am risk of being to close to this issue to safely unbiased. However, I feel i can add some value. Therefore, please consider this to a be complementing comment - rather than pushing in either direction. My understanding is that if users used the "maas-dhcp" to allow MAAS to drive their dhcp (using embedded cobbler) then this SRU almost certainly requires manual intervention to insure uninterrupted operation. "maas-dhcp" is a universe package, that was never designed to be a core part of MAAS. It was provided as developers were making use of it, and it seemed useful to provide for this purpose. However it was intentionally left in universe. If the documented use of MAAS is followed, then it should be a well tested seamless upgrade. Whilst i'd normally entirely agree that this update poses scope for concern, the positives outweigh these concerns. I understood that this was the primary reason this issue was progressed to the TB for discussion.

[Bug 1170325] Re: Facter 1.6.X not considering Qemu/KVM virtual type
[Test case update ] No BUG : - Download Promox VE on version 2.0, and install this one on a server - Create a simple Ubuntu VM on version 12.04 LTS running on the Proxmox VE node you've juste installed - Install facter : apt-get install facter - Retrieve facter execution output -> the virtual informations shows 'KVM', which is good. - Get /proc/cpuinfo line on the VM showing model name -> it shows "QEMU Virtual CPU version" string BUG APPEARS : - Download Proxmox VE on version 2.3, or update the current node on 2.0 version to the 2.3 version - check the facter execution output on the running VM (the same one you've installed before) -> the virutal informations shows 'physical', which is wrong - Get /proc/cpuinfo line on the VM showing model name -> it shows "Common KVM processor" string, and not "QEMU Virtual CPU version" an ymore This is the reason why I am updating you about that bug, which only occurs because of qemu-server packages changes on /proc/cpuinfo output. [Bug 1169044] Re: can't install/upgrade postfix non interactively through apt
This is specifically caused by having non-default smtp_recipient_restrictions, which changed behavior in 2.10, and postfix needs to know how you want to proceed. [Bug 1169044] Re: can't install/upgrade postfix non interactively through apt
Thanks for going through this with me. It seems that you have two problems: 1) You're asked to accept the changelogs before the upgrade proceeds. 2) You're prompted by debconf for postfix configuration options before the upgrade proceeds. The first is due to your decision to install apt-listchanges, its local configuration on your system, and possibly bug 788519. Try running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure apt-listchanges" to see if it has any debconf options to stop it prompting you, see the bug for a workaround, or just remove the apt-listchanges package if you don't need it. The second is the standard debconf prompt. See debconf documentation for details on this. Based on the debconf settings on your system, it looks like the question wasn't answered before and so it is asking it again. This is expected behaviour. To suppress the prompt entirely, try setting DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive. For the first issue, please refer to bug 788519, or file a new bug against apt-listchanges if you think you have a different issue with it. The second issue is not a bug in the postfix package, so I'm marking this bug as Invalid in postfix. If you need more help, please see http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community for community support options. ** Changed in: postfix (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to postfix in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1169044 Title: can't install/upgrade postfix non interactively through apt To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/+bug/1169044/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1172117] Re: Dovecot is unsupportedly-old, and remains old in Raring
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. dovecot is at 1:2.1.7-7 in Debian, with no newer version in Debian experimental. Since Ubuntu generally follows Debian, to get a newer version we need the newer dovecot packaged in Debian first. It may be that Debian lags upstream right now because of the current Debian freeze for wheezy's release. A related bug is http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=705887 It is very unlikely that Raring will see any updates before release. If there are any severe bugs, please file them in Launchpad, identify the fixes and follow steps 1 through 4 of the stable release update procedure at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure If all updates in 2.1.8+ meet SRU policy, then it may be possible to update to this in an SRU. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#New_upstream_microreleases for details. I appreciate you bringing this up. But since there is no action that can be taken on this specific bug now, I'm marking it as Incomplete. Please file individual bugs if you want specific issues fixed. Alternatively, please follow the instructions on the StableReleaseUpdate page to complete a justification for a full microrelease update for dovecot in this bug, and then change this bug's status back to New. ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #705887 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=705887 ** Changed in: dovecot (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dovecot in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1172117 Title: Dovecot is unsupportedly-old, and remains old in Raring To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dovecot/+bug/1172117/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
