[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release
Nate, The other distributions are fine with using stable releases recommended by us as they see it as the least risky options, especially since these are versions that we intend to support. RHEL and Fedora actually have policy against using out of tree drivers, so their requirement was to compile open-vm-tools without kernel drivers and for kernel drivers to come from mainline kernel. Same with Suse. I understand you might want to follow bleeding edge kernels more closely, but I do not think that it is good idea to package such efforts for general consumption and include them in main images installed by everyone. Monthly releases were really just development snapshots. At a given time we'd take top of the internal tree and release it. It could be fine and it could be broken and could eat your filesystem - we would not know because monthly snapshots do not go through full QA cycle. Regarding network drivers - e1000 is the default network device for new VMs an has been for a few years now; you can find pcnet32/vmxnet in very old VMs that are unlikely to get upgraded to newer releases (they'd be using 2.2 kernels I think). [Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release
Dmitry, I don't think we're using the built in-kernel vmblock. That's what's one of the reasons I wanted to keep the Devel package (for the moment) is because I had some specific changes for Ubuntu, that weren't in Debian. Some other ones were removing manpages of modules that have been removed from the package itself (like vmxnet3 or vmmemctl). I would love to get these packages updated faster, but you guys aren't pushing monthly devel releases (that's one of the reasons why I was still using Devel releases) any more. And the git repo (when it still worked) is update the day before release. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to open-vm-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1269985 Title: Revert package back to Devel release To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1269985/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release
Dmitry (#9), All the modules are being compiled (except ones that have caused build failures), but only vmxnet and vmhgfs are being installed/used. Speaking of vmxnet, I assume the pcnet32 is recommended over vmxnet. If so, I can just remove vmxnet from the install. I think Debian only compiles vmxnet and vmhgfs because of their configuration of dkms (which I planned on switching to after I got the Ubuntu package working with the Trusty kernel).

Dmitry (#8), As you are well aware, Ubuntu uses the bleeding edge kernels, and one of the nice things about devel packages was that, when they were being released on a more frequent rate), the devel releases where more quicker to adapt to the newest (release candidate) kernels. I know stable releases are better (you keep reminding me). But I'm kind of impatient, and I would like to get to stop the module build failures as fast as possible. And like I said, the joy of the devel releases was that I would only have to wait a month (or so) to see if compatibility for X kernel was added (in the devel package). If it was, I could test it, create the merge proposal, and (after approval) wait for the next problem to arise. And since the git repo doesn't updates as I fast I would like to, I can't simply grab fixes (patches) for the broken package. I have to wait from a patch from someone (who's better with the kernel than I am), to fix the problem. I'm gonna stop there before I confuse you more. But before I do, I want to ask two things. 1) How are other Distributions responding when you're asking them to move to the Stable packaging? 2) The file needed for compatibility with 3.12 is VMware own version of the uidgid.h file. I want to wrap up the 3.12 issues before I start tackling the 3.13 stuff.

Ravindra, It is built with "--without-kernel-modules," I had to check the revision changelog, it stayed. Also, I've linked the Saucy branch to this bug, so you can see my previous changes. Another reason I'm still kind of fighting is because the Ubuntu-specific changes made, still might not be compatible with Ubuntu. I uploaded last devel Trusty package to one of my repos, so if I need to, I can make the necessary changes, and move them to the Stable package (as was my plan for this cycle, but the failure to communicate (ignoring the unofficial maintainer of the Ubuntu Package), put that on hold).

[Bug 1271247] Re: package mysql-server-5.5 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1 failed to install/upgrade: underprosessen installerte post-installation-skript returnerte feilstatus 1
Thank you for your report. This looks like a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu. Specifically, with your /etc/mysql/my.cnf file missing, MySQL cannot be expected to work. You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community Since we use this bug tracker to track bugs in Ubuntu, rather than configuration problems, I'm marking this bug as Invalid. This helps us to focus on fixing bugs in Ubuntu. If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New. ** Changed in: mysql-5.5 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-5.5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1271247 Title: package mysql-server-5.5 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1 failed to install/upgrade: underprosessen installerte post-installation-skript returnerte feilstatus 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.5/+bug/1271247/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Line 22 looks like this : "exec /bin/su -s /bin/sh - "${SUUSER}" -c "$*" >/dev/null" . The variable SUUSER is set in line 13: SUUSER="vmail". To me it looks like vmail is not allowed to run su? [Bug 1271455] [NEW] lxc-create does not honor $HTTP_PROXY when using a cached base image
Public bug reported: I just learned that one can call lxc-create with $HTTP_PROXY set to configure an apt proxy in the container. However, this only seems to work when it actually downloads and creates a base image. When it's using a cache it doesn't work: $ sudo HTTP_PROXY=http://donald:3142 lxc-create -t ubuntu -n precise-i386 -- -r precise -a i386 Checking cache download in /var/cache/lxc/precise/rootfs-i386 ... Copy /var/cache/lxc/precise/rootfs-i386 to /scratch/lxc/precise-i386/rootfs ... Copying rootfs to /scratch/lxc/precise-i386/rootfs ... [...] $ ls -l /scratch/lxc/precise-i386/rootfs/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ insgesamt 16 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 350 Nov 15 16:35 01autoremove -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 372 Jan 22 10:08 01autoremove-kernels -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 123 Apr 20 2012 20changelog -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 182 Mär 15 2012 70debconf i. e. there is no 70proxy. When appending -F it works. However, 70proxy is *not* in the cache, so lxc-create does create that after creating the cache. Hence it should not be too difficult to also create 70proxy after copying an existing cache?
