[Bug 1278359] Re: ntpdate call frequency
* Disclaimer: The functionality of this program is now available in the ntpd program. See the -q command line option in the ntpd - Network Time Protocol (NTP) daemon page. After a suitable period of mourning, the ntpdate program is to be retired from this distribution [1]. This page was last updated on Nov 2012, but I would expect mourning to take longer. In other words: I would not expect ntpdate to be changed. I suspect that ntpdate is a smaller package then ntp. ntpdate is indeed smaller than ntp, by a factor of 10 (590k for ntp, 63k for ntpdate). Generically, both of them are small enough not to be an issue. ntp still also is a server package Yes indeed. ntp can be used as a source for clock (when you build your own stratum), or as a consumer (client). Even as a source you still need another source for clock (be it a stratum 1, or a local GPS, or whatever). In my case, I usually deploy one ntp server syncing to upstream strata, and all the machines in my network will sync with my ntp server (as a result there is one -- perhaps two -- ntp servers in my network, and -- except for these ntp servers -- all clock sync is local to my network. this might be the reason behind the use of ntpdate Most probably (before my time, so not really sure) ntpdate was written because (at the time) *most* non-server machines were rarely connected. So a program that could attempt time sync when the network was up again would help a lot. Of course, given the (usually) long interval between network connects, the local clock would be off by a larger margin. Also, ntp itself lacked the ability to make large changes instantly, like ntpdate does. This is now available, via the -g parameter. As for minor time fluctuations: well, it all depends on what you see as minor and major. You do not see clock fluctuation as major; I do not see it as minor. But it all depends if your machines are providing services or not, I guess. ...It might be a good idea to create an option in the ntp (or ntpdate)... It is already there. For the poll interval, please see Poll Interval Management at [2]. In other words: you can manage your poll as you wish, with intervals as large as 36 hours. Of course, doing that just because one does not want frequent clock sync sort of throws NTP's poll management off. shrug/, this is an user option, and any consequences will be at the user's computer. But, I guess, my whole issue here is that -- for me -- it does not make sense to have the ability to maintain time synced, and not use it. The cost, in terms of CPU cycles, and packets exchange is not that significant (and most probably smaller than the load of a not-simple web page). [Bug 1318660] Re: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/apiclient/__init__.py', which is also in package python-googleapi 1.2-2
Looks like both packages want to call themselves apiclient. Upstream googleapi has changed packagename to googleapiclient so as to avoid confusion, but have not had a new release since that change. In my estimation both packages probably need to have their python package names changed especially since there is an separate apiclient project already registered on pypi (though it looks to be abandoned -- no changes in 3 years -- and not packaged for distros). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to maas in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1318660 Title: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/python2.7/dist- packages/apiclient/__init__.py', which is also in package python- googleapi 1.2-2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas/+bug/1318660/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1318803] [NEW] FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE installer does not boot (kernel trap 12 with interrupts disabled)
Public bug reported: This is similar (or perhaps the exact same bug that was thought to be fixed) to this[1] issue on Debian. Essentially, I cannot boot either FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE nor Freebsd 9.2-RELEASE on KVM/QEMU guests, as they fail with a kernel panic with the following error message: Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode You can see the full messages (both with acpi and with it disabled) here[2], though I don't imagine they'll be of much importance. This seems to have to do with 'atkbd' on FreeBSD having some sort of issue with seabios -- specifically version 1.7.4-x. Just as in the aforementioned bug, if I downgrade to seabios version 1.7.3, everything works fine. Is this something I should take up with the Debian devs? 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using: Description:Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS Release:12.04 2) The version of the package you are using: seabios: Installed: 1.7.4-4~cloud0 Candidate: 1.7.4-4~cloud0 Version table: *** 1.7.4-4~cloud0 0 500 http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/icehouse/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1.7.3-1ubuntu0.1~cloud0 0 500 http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/havana/main amd64 Packages 0.6.2-0ubuntu2.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/main amd64 Packages 0.6.2-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages ~# virsh version Compiled against library: libvirt 1.2.2 Using library: libvirt 1.2.2 Using API: QEMU 1.2.2 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.7.91 3) What you expected to happen: I expect 'virsh start $freebsd_image' to start the image without incident. 4)What happened instead: The image indeed starts, however during boot, it runs into a kernel panic. [Bug 1318835] [NEW] regression: smbclient authfile parameter no longer works
Public bug reported: I was using smbclient as part of my autofs setup to enumerate remote shares. This worked fine on a previous release of Ubuntu 13.10, however when I upgraded to 14.04, my shares no longer got enumerated. When I debugged further, I was getting logon errors. As a workground, it was suggested I modify the smb.conf file and change the workgroup setting there. This appeared to work, but doesn't make sense to me. I shouldn't need to change smb.conf (used for smbd server) for client usage. I would expect the authfile passed to -A to be used for authentication purposes. [Bug 1316272] Re: juju destroy-environment =256 nodes fails
We already do POST when stopping instances. The problem is likely that we first have to map instance IDs to instances so we can stop them (this is dumb and needs to change; see lp:1260171). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to juju-core in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1316272 Title: juju destroy-environment =256 nodes fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/juju-core/+bug/1316272/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1316872] Re: package mongodb-clients (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/bsondump', which is also in package mongodb-10gen 2.4.10
Thank you for your report. This looks like a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, since no package mongodb-10gen ships with Ubuntu itself. You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community Since we use this bug tracker to track bugs in Ubuntu, rather than configuration problems, I'm marking this bug as Invalid. This helps us to focus on fixing bugs in Ubuntu. If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New. ** Changed in: mongodb (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mongodb in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1316872 Title: package mongodb-clients (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/bsondump', which is also in package mongodb-10gen 2.4.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mongodb/+bug/1316872/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
