[Bug 1323930] Re: mod_lua.so missing from 14.04 install (apache2-bin, 2.4.7-1ubuntu4))

2014-08-25 Thread Charles Bueche
Hi maintainers,

I'm victim of this bug, and need mod_lua. I can compile it myself, but
as user of 14.04 LTS, I thought I can expect this bug to be fixed, e.g.
being able to get the missing dependencies installed.

I'm not sure to really understand the release process here. Janitor says
it's fixed, but apt-get update+upgrade does not install the missing
mod_lua.so.

Is there something I have to do to get this fix applied to my server ?

TIA,
Charles

[Bug 995332] Re: Please enhance NetworkManager such that DNSSEC validation is done whenever possible

2014-08-25 Thread Renne
Do NOT use DNSSEC-proxy function of Dnsmasq. The validation is done on a
resolver in the internet. Any attacker can use a Man-In-The-Middle
attack between the DNSSEC-resolver in the internet and Dnsmasq to
manipulate the DNSSEC data. Proxying the DO-/AD-bit lulls the user into
a FALSE sense of security.

DNSSEC-proxying is highly INSECURE!

[Bug 1300367] Re: rsync 3.1.0 and 3.0.9 incompatibility

2014-08-25 Thread Steve
and I'm also getting this same error between rsync 3.1.0 and rsync
3.1.0, so it's not just an incompatibility between the two versions:

inflate returned -3 (0 bytes)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at token.c(557)
[receiver=3.1.0]
rsync: [generator] write error: Broken pipe (32)
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at io.c(837) [generator=3.1.0]

Both sides have version: 3.1.0-2ubuntu0.1

A workaround, reported in the other bugs above (and I've also confirmed
from my own use) is to avoid using the -z option.

[Bug 1323930] Re: mod_lua.so missing from 14.04 install (apache2-bin, 2.4.7-1ubuntu4))

2014-08-25 Thread DG
Charles,

I fixed this by getting the updated version of Apache can be downloaded
from the following url:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2

You need the following packages:

apache2-bin_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
apache2-data_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_all.deb
apache2-utils_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
apache2_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
apache2-mpm-worker_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb

(or apache2-mpm-prefork_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb)

and install in that order with sudo dpkg -i, first install liblua5.1

It's not in 14.04.1 - so I also would like to know if this fix perhaps
will be in 14.04.2.

Best,

Dirk

[Bug 1361241] [NEW] maas automatic upgrade prompts for action due to change in /etc/maas/maas_local_settings.py

2014-08-25 Thread Diogo Matsubara

Steps to reproduce:

1. Using a pristine precise image, install maas: $ sudo apt-get install maas
2. Add cloud tools archive: $ sudo add-apt-repository cloud-archive:tools
3. $ sudo apt-get update
4. Dist upgrade with -y so any prompts should be assumed as yes: $ sudo apt-get
-y dist-upgrade

What should happen:

MAAS should be updated from 1.2+bzr1373+dfsg-0ubuntu1~12.04.5 to
1.4+bzr1693+dfsg-0ubuntu2.3~ctools0

What happens:

You get an apt prompt due to changes to /etc/maas/maas_local_settings.py

Setting up maas-region-controller (1.4+bzr1693+dfsg-0ubuntu2.3~ctools0) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/maas/maas-http.conf ...

Configuration file `/etc/maas/maas_local_settings.py'
== Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.

Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** maas_local_settings.py (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

[Bug 1323930] Re: mod_lua.so missing from 14.04 install (apache2-bin, 2.4.7-1ubuntu4))

2014-08-25 Thread Charles Bueche
Thanks Dirk for your help.

As I found no usable crypto lib in LUA available as Ubuntu LTA package, I
reverted to mod_perl for my FixUp handler.
Sad thing, LUA would be a nice addition to my weapon-list to hack on Apache
traffic, but it seems not very much used for such things.

[Bug 1359946] Re: smbd spawns hundreds/thousands of processes

2014-08-25 Thread Scott Alfter
More info: the router logs bandwidth usage information to the same Samba
share; it's done that for over a year and a half with no issues.

Until now, apparently. I reconfigured the router to write its bandwidth
logs to internal flash (had to back off on the write frequency to keep
from killing the flash) and unmapped the Samba share it was using for
that purpose. The Samba server's not needed any attention over the
weekend, and when I logged in a few minutes ago, it reported its current
load average as 0.01.

know that when we did this, there was no systemd-sysv package, so my

[Bug 1322431] Re: libsnmp-dev: Cannot create snmpv3 user with net-snmp-config command

The workaround in #4 works.

It would still be nice to get the bug fixed. I have some configuration
scripts that use net-snmp-create-v3-user. They work great on 12.04, but
14.04 doesn't work.

[Bug 1361357] Re: metadata service performance regression ~100x

2014-08-25 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

The fix for bug 1325128 [1] included changes to the metadata service
  seen at:
-trunk[2]: 4a60c6a655006b2882331844664fac5cf67c5f34
-icehouse [3]: 9f59ca751f1a392ef24d8ab73a7bf5ce9655017e
+    trunk[2]: 4a60c6a655006b2882331844664fac5cf67c5f34
+    icehouse [3]: 9f59ca751f1a392ef24d8ab73a7bf5ce9655017e

The new code is around 100x slower. That slow down causes
excessive load on the metadata server if an instance crawls the metadata
service (which generates dozens of http requests).

Both cloud-init and cirros's boot code crawl that meta-data service. The
end result is linux instances boot time is dramatically affected. A
typical Ubuntu boot time will be 10 seconds to executing user code, but
after this regression, I'm seeing boots in the range of 30 to 45 seconds.

+ While the fix is exactly intended to slow things down to improve
+ security, the performance regression seems significant enough to
+ address.

[Bug 1361357] Re: metadata service performance regression ~100x

2014-08-25 Thread Seth Arnold
I can't comment on the need for a timing-independent fix in any given
location -- my instinct suggests HMAC with strong enough hashes
doesn't need timing-resistant equality checks because brute forcing HMAC
is bloody difficult -- but with the assumption that the analysis was
done correctly, there's no easy way to speed up equality tests that
don't leak timing information.

There are two possible solutions to this:
- Fix the comparison to run more quickly
- Change algorithms in whatever calls comparisons so often that comparisons are
a major bottleneck

Both options together may in fact lead to better performance than
before, so it's worth investigating both.

My suggestions for things to try to speed up the comparison:

- Implement a similar comparison algorithm in C and call it via FFI methods
- Implement a sip-hash for the strings and bail early if the hashes don't match.

The choice of hashing function is important -- it can't be something
that allows easily constructing strings that collide. One might almost
suggest hmac-sha256, except that's apparently the thing that is already
too slow. The siphash value could be computed ahead of time, perhaps for
one of the inputs anyway, which may improve the user-visible latency.

On the other hand, with the timing that you've reported, this looks like
it'd be a real problem only if there's supposed to be ~10K comparisons
per second; how likely is that? If it happens often, it sounds a lot
like an O(N) algorithm is being used when an O(Lg(N)) algorithm should
be used instead. Consider, if the code is searching linearly through a
list to find a match it could probably be converted to a sorted array or
a tree or a hash table to allow bisection searches or searching
significantly fewer entries in a hash table. Maintaining a binary tree
or sorted array could be cheaper than repeated linear searches,
especially if enough lookups are performed between insertions /
deletions.

Algorithmic improvements are harder to discuss in the abstract -- and
may require changing multiple interfaces -- but stand a better chance of
addressing this regression head-on than trying to tweak the comparison
code.

[Bug 1360400] Re: Invalid maas.log permission caused django to crash

2014-08-25 Thread Julian Edwards
The permissions for maas.log should *not* be maas:maas. There is a line
in the packaging that does:

chown syslog:syslog /var/log/maas/maas.log

which is correct, because the only process that writes maas.log is
syslog.

Questions:
 * what were the old owners of the maas.log?
 * did you have a maas-django.log?

I suspect something went wrong with the upgrade and you didn't accept
the required changes to the django config file in trunk, which redirects
its log to maas-django.log.

[Bug 1361357] Re: metadata service performance regression ~100x

2014-08-25 Thread Scott Moser
As to whether or not this is a problem, it is a real problem seen on our
internal openstack cloud. Instance boot times added 20+ seconds (and
they are typically ~10 seconds).

Re: [Bug 1360400] Re: Invalid maas.log permission caused django to crash

2014-08-25 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Julian,

I did have maas-django.log. The old owners of the maas.log there were
maas:maas but the new ones (after upgrade) syslog:syslog.

I Installed 1.6.0 and upgraded to 1.7.0~beta1. This was reproduced more
than twice so i think we can reproduce to figure out what;s wrong.

I know what's wrong without looking I think:

You didn't accept the changes in the packaging for maas_local_settings.py. It
re-points the django log to maas-django.log.

The file should have this in it:

'handlers': {
'log': {
'class': 'logging.handlers.RotatingFileHandler',
# DO NOT point this file at /var/log/maas/maas.log; MAAS now
# uses syslog to log to that file, and pointing the Django
# log output to it will clobber the syslog output.
'filename': '/var/log/maas/maas-django.log',
'formatter': 'simple',
},
},

[Bug 1361472] [NEW] MaaS IPMI user cannot be created on C220 M4

2014-08-25 Thread Srinivas
Private bug reported:

Unable to provision Ubuntu 14.04 on Cisco UCS C220 M4 using the MaaS
server.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect the node to the MaaS server and enable the network boot.
2. The node boots up while the MaaS provisioning completes and powers off as
expected.
3. Once, we have a look at the node page in MaaS webpage, the power type of the
node remains unselected, thus rendering the node unusable to provision Ubuntu
14.04.

Ubuntu 14.04
MaaS package version used: 1.5.2+bzr2282-0ubuntu0.2

Actual result:

MaaS fails to create the user called maas using ipmitool. This would
lead to a situation where the node cannot be controlled by MaaS using
IPMI.

Expected result:

MaaS should be able to create the IPMI user and successfully provision
Ubuntu 14.04 on the node.

Additional Info:
Created a backdoor and logged in to check what was happening and a traceback
was observed while running the maas-ipmi-autodetect script.

Note: MaaS was able to successfully provision a C 220 M3 node without
any issues. The IPMI user called maas was created.

[Bug 1361030] Re: new dnsmasq requirement exceeds available version on ubuntu 12.04

2014-08-25 Thread Kevin Benton
The developers list wasn't exactly a great target because developers
aren't the ones deploying this code. It should have been brought to the
operators to see if anyone was planning on upgrading to Juno on 12.04
deployments.
