[Bug 1323930] Re: mod_lua.so missing from 14.04 install (apache2-bin, 2.4.7-1ubuntu4))
Hi maintainers, I'm victim of this bug, and need mod_lua. I can compile it myself, but as user of 14.04 LTS, I thought I can expect this bug to be fixed, e.g. being able to get the missing dependencies installed. I'm not sure to really understand the release process here. Janitor says it's fixed, but apt-get update+upgrade does not install the missing mod_lua.so. [Bug 995332] Re: Please enhance NetworkManager such that DNSSEC validation is done whenever possible
Do NOT use DNSSEC-proxy function of Dnsmasq. The validation is done on a resolver in the internet. Charles, I fixed this by getting the updated version of Apache can be downloaded from the following url: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2 You need the following packages: apache2-bin_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb apache2-data_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_all.deb apache2-utils_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb apache2_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb apache2-mpm-worker_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb (or apache2-mpm-prefork_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb) and install in that order with sudo dpkg -i, first install liblua5.1 It's not in 14.04.1 - so I also would like to know if this fix perhaps will be in 14.04.2. More info: the router logs bandwidth usage information to the same Samba share; it's done that for over a year and a half with no issues. Until now, apparently. [Bug 1361357] Re: metadata service performance regression ~100x
** Description changed: The fix for bug 1325128 [1] included changes to the metadata service seen at: -trunk[2]: 4a60c6a655006b2882331844664fac5cf67c5f34 -icehouse [3]: 9f59ca751f1a392ef24d8ab73a7bf5ce9655017e + trunk[2]: 4a60c6a655006b2882331844664fac5cf67c5f34 + icehouse [3]: 9f59ca751f1a392ef24d8ab73a7bf5ce9655017e The new code is around 100x slower. That slow down causes excessive load on the metadata server if an instance crawls the metadata service (which generates dozens of http requests). Both cloud-init and cirros's boot code crawl that meta-data service. The end result is linux instances boot time is dramatically affected. A typical Ubuntu boot time will be 10 seconds to executing user code, but after this regression, I'm seeing boots in the range of 30 to 45 seconds. + While the fix is exactly intended to slow things down to improve + security, the performance regression seems significant enough to + address. + -- [1] http://pad.lv/1325128 [2] https://git.openstack.org/cgit/openstack/nova/commit/?id=4a60c6a655006b2882331844664fac5cf67c5f34 [3] https://git.openstack.org/cgit/openstack/nova/commit/?id=4a60c6a655006b2882331844664fac5cf67c5f34 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nova in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1361357 Title: metadata service performance regression ~100x To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-archive/+bug/1361357/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1361357] Re: metadata service performance regression ~100x
I can't comment on the need for a timing-independent fix in any given location -- my instinct suggests HMAC with strong enough hashes doesn't need timing-resistant equality checks because brute forcing HMAC is bloody difficult -- but with the assumption that the analysis was done correctly, there's no easy way to speed up equality tests that don't leak timing information. There are two possible solutions to this: - Fix the comparison to run more quickly - Change algorithms in whatever calls comparisons so often that comparisons are a major bottleneck Both options together may in fact lead to better performance than before, so it's worth investigating both. My suggestions for things to try to speed up the comparison: - Implement a similar comparison algorithm in C and call it via FFI methods - Implement a sip-hash for the strings and bail early if the hashes don't match. The choice of hashing function is important -- it can't be something that allows easily constructing strings that collide. One might almost suggest hmac-sha256, except that's apparently the thing that is already too slow. The siphash value could be computed ahead of time, perhaps for one of the inputs anyway, which may improve the user-visible latency. On the other hand, with the timing that you've reported, this looks like it'd be a real problem only if there's supposed to be ~10K comparisons per second; how likely is that? If it happens often, it sounds a lot like an O(N) algorithm is being used when an O(Lg(N)) algorithm should be used instead. Consider, if the code is searching linearly through a list to find a match it could probably be converted to a sorted array or a tree or a hash table to allow bisection searches or searching significantly fewer entries in a hash table. Maintaining a binary tree or sorted array could be cheaper than repeated linear searches, especially if enough lookups are performed between insertions / deletions. Algorithmic improvements are harder to discuss in the abstract -- and may require changing multiple interfaces -- but stand a better chance of addressing this regression head-on than trying to tweak the comparison code. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nova in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1361357 Title: metadata service performance regression ~100x To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-archive/+bug/1361357/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1361472] [NEW] MaaS IPMI user cannot be created on C220 M4
Private bug reported: Unable to provision Ubuntu 14.04 on Cisco UCS C220 M4 using the MaaS server. Steps to reproduce: 1. Connect the node to the MaaS server and enable the network boot. 2. The node boots up while the MaaS provisioning completes and powers off as expected. 3.
