[Bug 1441322] Re: The Description-en field isn't correct

2015-04-09 Thread Martin Pitt
That sounds weird. When I do this I get

Description-en: System-V-like init utilities - metapackage
This package is an essential metapackage which allows you to select from
three available init systems in Ubuntu (systemd or upstart) while
ensuring that one of these is available on the system at all times.

which doesn't mention a number at all. What's the precise string you are
getting?

2015-04-09 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, don't know how this ended up with the wrong bug number in the
changelog, but cloud-init has been uploaded and accepted into vivid.

cloud-init (0.7.7~bzr1088-0ubuntu3) vivid; urgency=medium

  * systemd/*.service: don't declare a Wants/Requires on network.target; this
is a passive target that should only be pulled in by implementors of the
networking service. The requirement for network needs to be
expressed as a dependency on network-online.target. LP: #1440180.

[Bug 1439277] Re: tcmalloc performance degredation over time

2015-04-09 Thread James Page
Thanks Chaitanya

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ When under memory pressure, tcmalloc will consume increasing amounts of CPU
cycles resulting in performance degradation; the mechanism to permit a larger
thread cache is broken, so the pinch point can be worked around by increasing
the amount of memory to relieve this pressure.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ (compile attached binary)
+ g++ -o gperftest  gperftest.c -ltcmalloc
+ export TCMALLOC_MAX_TOTAL_THREAD_CACHE_BYTES=67108864
+ ./gperftest
+ Tcmalloc BUG! TCMALLOC_MAX_TOTAL_THREAD_CACHE_BYTES: 67108864 Internal Size:
33554432 different
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Fix committed upstream and isolate to a specific code path.
+
+ [Original Bug Report]
+
  Reported by upstream:

   Sage,
Here is the tcmalloc issue I was talking in the performance meeting.

   http://code.google.com/p/gperftools/issues/detail?id=585

The tcmalloc is consuming lot of cpus (and eventually slowing down the
performance) with the following perf top trace.

   25.73% libtcmalloc.so.4.1.2 [.] tcmalloc::CentralFreeList::FetchFromSpans()
   12.52% libtcmalloc.so.4.1.2 [.]

unsigned long, int)
   11.62% libtcmalloc.so.4.1.2 [.]
tcmalloc::CentralFreeList::ReleaseToSpans(void*)
   1.56% [kernel] [k] __copy_user_nocache

tcmalloc::CentralFreeList::ReleaseListToSpans(void*)
   0.89% libtcmalloc.so.4.1.2 [.] operator new(unsigned long)

The TCMALLOC_MAX_TOTAL_THREAD_CACHE_BYTES is alleviating that but the env
variable setting for this is a noop in the binary we are having in Ubuntu
14.04. It is fixed in gperftools-2.1.90 release.
   See the following link.

   http://code.google.com/p/gperftools/

We can request Ubuntu guys to incorporate this version or the latest
tcmalloc version which is gperftools-2.4.

updates.

[Bug 1442087] [NEW] don't run as root by default

2015-04-09 Thread Tim Kuijsten
Public bug reported:

I was surprised that after following
https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/serverguide/mail-filtering.html this
leaves me with the spamassassin daemon running as root.

This is not of the same standard compared with the secure defaults that
Postfix and Dovecot use. I think this undermines the whole setup and
comes a bit unexpected. I would suggest to create a separate
unprivileged user (maybe spamd?) for running spamd only and keep the
user debian-spamd for updating the rules.

[Bug 1442039] [NEW] Samba 4.1.6 has userlock bug - fixed in 4.2.0

2015-04-09 Thread mario pio
Public bug reported:

Good Day All, first of all thanks for your work!!

I have a ubuntu server 14.04 on which i am running a samba-4 DC
(verstion 4.1.6)

now that version of samba has a know bug about the user account lockout

password for X times)

this is a know issue:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2210798page=4

and it has been resolved in samba 4.2.0 , which now in stable release:

https://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-4.2.0.html

my question is: can you please release the packet samba-4.2.0 (and
ventually the related samba-tools) on ubuntu server 14?

[Bug 1441930] Re: Fix handling of multipathed disks with 4k-sectors

2015-04-09 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
I incorrectly mentioned LVM was also affected by the issue.

It doesn't, as the dm mappings are the LVs mapped on top of VGs, which already
take sectors as 512B AFAICT.
The issue arises w/ multipath because then the partitions are mapped directly
on top of the underlying devices, which have 4k sectors. Since the values
being passed to libdevmapper should be in 512b sectors, if there's no
multiplier of 4k/512 there, things go wrong. :)

** Description changed:

The packages for libparted and kpartx don't have the patches for using
- device-mapper (multipath/LVM) on 4k-sector disks (generally: 'non
+ multipath (actually device-mapper) on 4k-sector disks (generally: 'non
  512-byte sector disks')

This causes the number of sectors of each device-mapper partition to be 1/8th
(512/4096) of that expected.
  These 3 errors were identified:
- 1) Partition sizes on multipath/LVM are 1/8th of the intended size
+ 1) Partition sizes on multipath are 1/8th of the intended size
  2) The filesystem on the underlying device is not-accessible (only in the dm
mapped device)
  3) grub-install fails w/ 'Unknown filesystem'

The 2 patches attached contains upstream patches from parted and
multipath-tools, and fix the issues (the installation finishes without
  errors and the system boots).

[Bug 1439280] Re: Libvirt CPU affinity error

2015-04-09 Thread Kashyap Chamarthy
Matt, you're right, allow me to correct myself below. Short: I still
cannot reproduce it.

I just tested it below in a Single node DevStack with today's Nova
git with the Nova instance being QEMU emulated, but I cannot reproduce
the said failure in this bug description.

Test environment

$ uname -r; rpm -q libvirt-daemon-kvm qemu-system-x86

[Bug 1441930] Re: Fix handling of multipathed disks with 4k-sectors

2015-04-09 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
BTW, but not too important:

There's a quite repetitive verbose output during update-grub, mentioning:
ERROR: unsupported sector size 4096 on partition.

It happens because os-prober calls dmraid for every partition, but it doesn't
support 4k sectors, and yields to stderr.
A simple redirect quiets it up.
... I'm not sure it should be quieted up :) feel free to modify the scripts if
you think so, or tell me and I can submit another patch.

Back to comment #5.
If it's possible to install LVM on top of multipath, then I think the problem
shall happen too, because then the first level of mapping is multipath on top

[Bug 1442228] [NEW] lxc fails to start inside vivid container

2015-04-09 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

When installing lxc, the lxc.postinst tries to install apparmor profiles.
Inside a vivid container on an upstart-based host, the profile loading
script will test /bin//running-in-container and see that it is in a container
and exit 0. On a systemd host, /bin/running-in-container doesn't work, so
the profile loading script exits with error, failing the postinst.

/bin/running-in-container needs to be generalized to work with systemd.

Unlike upstart, systemd leaves its environment showing in /proc/1/environ,
so we can in fact simply check for grep -q container=lxc /proc/1/environ,
which we couldn't do with upstart. However, to keep things more similar
between upstart and systemd, and to handle all cases, it would probably be
best to have a systemd unit starting at boot which does the same thing as
the /etc/init/container-detect.conf does.

Then move /bin/running-in-container from upstart into init-system-
helpers.

[Bug 1439280] Re: Libvirt CPU affinity error

2015-04-09 Thread Kashyap Chamarthy
Yes, to test CPU pinning/NUMA with libvirt you ought to use Nested KVM.
Please report results after testing with that.

That said, some notes below.

Quoting Dan Berrange from a different review with a complete response on
*why*:

It is fundamentally impossible to test CPU pinning with TCG (aka plain
QEMU) because TCG only has a single thread for all virtual CPUs. As such
there is no mechanism to pin vCPU threads with TCG. Nested KVM is thus
the only possible option for testing any of the NUMA / CPU pinning
stuff. Instructions for nested KVM setup on a KVM host are documented
   here

http://docs.openstack.org/developer/nova/devref/testing/libvirt-
numa.html#provisioning-a-virtual-machine-for-testing

From my testing, a Nova guest booted with a NUMA flavor, will have the
below contextual XML snippets w.r.t vCPU placement:

. . .
  vcpu placement='static'4/vcpu
  cputune
vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='0-3'/
vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='0-3'/
vcpupin vcpu='2' cpuset='0-3'/
vcpupin vcpu='3' cpuset='0-3'/
emulatorpin cpuset='0-3'/
  /cputune
  numatune
memory mode='strict' nodeset='0'/
memnode cellid='0' mode='strict' nodeset='0'/
  /numatune
. . .
  cpu
topology sockets='4' cores='1' threads='1'/
numa
  cell id='0' cpus='0-3' memory='1048576' unit='KiB'/
/numa
  /cpu
. . .

Here's the working example XMLs from my testing.

Libvirt XML for the guest hypervisor (also called L1), running DevStack
and will host Nova instances which are nested guests:

https://kashyapc.fedorapeople.org/virt/openstack/nova-libvirt-numa-
testing/devstack-vm-libvirt.xml

And, Nova guest XML, booted with a NUMA flavor:

https://kashyapc.fedorapeople.org/virt/openstack/nova-libvirt-numa-
testing/nova-guest-libvirt.xml
