[Bug 1445456] Re: sgdisk return 0 if nonGPT partition style (must return 3)
I'm the upstream author of GPT fdisk. The intent of the "3" return code is to signal when sgdisk failed to operate because the disk was a non-GPT disk -- for instance, a "-d" operation to delete a partition, which sgdisk will refuse to do on an MBR disk unless "-g" is also included, to make it clear that the user (or script) intends to convert from MBR to GPT. The "-b" option will complete successfully on an MBR disk, although the backup data won't reflect the MBR data as it was, since it will be a GPT-converted version of the MBR data. This makes this particular case a bit ambiguous: sgdisk CAN do as it was asked, but the resulting data might not be useful. IMO, it's better to know the partition table type BEFORE using sgdisk than to rely on sgdisk to return an error code if you use it inappropriately. You can learn the partition table type with "gdisk -l /dev/sdx" or "parted /dev/sdx print" and grepping on appropriate output lines. Another consideration is that there may be existing scripts that rely on sgdisk creating a "backup" GPT data file even of MBR disks. This would be a little weird, but I can't rule out the possibility that somebody would want to do this, and I'm reluctant to introduce a change to sgdisk that would break somebody's scripts. I should note that 14.10 shipped with squid 3.3.8 and squidGuard 1.5-2. 15.04 ships with squid 3.3.8 but squidGuard 1.5-4. The 1.5-4 changelog shows they made some changes to support squid 3.4 and how that was the new base version. I added Closes: #778507 to the changelog, to make it easier on the next merge from Debian to see if the delta is still required (look unlikely because it's marked pending in Debian). Debdiff attached. [SRU] [Impact] Bug shows up when user tries to upgrade any previous version of clamav to the version which is currently available inside vivid repo. Apt crashes with the following error message: /var/lib/dpkg/info/clamav-daemon.postinst: 626: /var/lib/dpkg/info/clamav-daemon.postinst: cannot create : Directory nonexistent dpkg: error processing package clamav-daemon (--install): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2 This happens due to a typo inside postinst script. Variable $DEBCONFILE is used incorrectly instead of $DEBCONFFILE (note double F) which leads to generation of the incorrect output path. This typo is on the path which gets executed only when debconf information is available for the package. It means that the issue doesn't show up during regular installation but crashes apt during updates. This issue is important because all clamav users will observe the issue while upgrading from Utopic to Vivid. [Test Case] How to reproduce the issue and make sure that debdiff resolves it: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/10879650/ [Regression Potential] Change is minor and fixes obvious issue. Comment #11 solved the problem for me, too. I ran into the bug performing the following steps: 1. I upgraded Kubuntu from 14.10 to 15.04 using `sudo do-release-upgrade`. 2. I rebooted using `sudo reboot now` instead of using the K menu due to a bug that prevented me from rebooting via menu. According to the attached excerpt of mysql.err, mysqld was shutdown properly. 3. Public bug reported: I had a working config on Ubuntu 14.10 Server with Squid 3.3.8 and squidGuard 1.5-2. I spun up a 15.04 Server box and installed both and copied over the .conf files. Squid works like a charm. squidGuard fails with: 2015/04/23 16:15:44 kid1| ERROR: URL-rewrite produces invalid request: GET ERR HTTP1.1 Googling this error led to others who also had this error in the past, and the case seemed to be that squidGuard is trying to use an unsupported method in Squid. Squid 3.3.8 is almost 2 years old now, and Squid 3.5 is the stable branch.
