[Bug 1322897] Re: syslog spam Failed to get vmstats.

2015-06-05 Thread WIll Salmon
I have just installed open-vm-tools-lts-trusty version:
2:9.4.0-1280544-5ubuntu6~precise2 in place of an out-of-date version of
VMware Tools and everything seems to be working fine except for these
syslog messages every 30 seconds :

vmsvc[]: [ warning] [guestinfo] Failed to get vmstats.

Can anyone tell me if this bug matters?
Is it just annoying messages in syslog or is something really not working?
What do the syslog messages really mean?

Could this fix PLEASE be added to trusty as we're not permitted to use
personal packages archives as an O/S code source?

[Bug 1443542] Re: curtin race on vivid when /dev/sda1 doesn't exist

2015-06-05 Thread Scott Moser
This is believed to be fix-committed. under commit 205.
I removed a 'wipefs' which always calls blockdev --rereadpt. That would
trigger deletion and recreation of partition devices.
We replaced it with 'wipe_partitions' which does not issue a rereadpt, but
instead just zeros the front of the device.
Note, though, that in vivid and later, even a write to /dev/vdb1 does trigger
kernel/udev events.

Re: [Bug 1322897] Re: syslog spam Failed to get vmstats.

2015-06-05 Thread flickerfly
No, it doesn't really matter. It is just annoying to those of us who
appreciate clean logs and systems. You could also simply write a line in
the rsyslog config to discard it. That is actually where I went with it as
it was the least change to the default system and most easily replicated in
my environment. You can put the below in /etc/rsyslog.d/40-discard.conf
then restart rsyslog and it should go away.

# Ubuntu Server has a bug that pops this message out every half hour:
# vmsvc[1070]: [ warning] [guestinfo] Failed to get vmstats.
if $programname == 'vmsvc' and $msg contains 'Failed to get vmstats' then
stop

2015-06-05 Thread JuanJo Ciarlante
Public bug reported:

We're using bcache under trusty HWE kernel (3.16.0-38-generic)
with bcache-tools 1.0.7-0ubuntu1 (built from src).

As trusty has util-linux 2.20.1, udev rules for auto registering
bcache devices are skipped:

 # blkid was run by the standard udev rules
 # It recognised bcache (util-linux 2.24+)
 ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}==bcache, GOTO=bcache_backing_found

We're manually cowboy'ing the following line alongside above:
 KERNEL==nvme*, GOTO=bcache_backing_found

, but it would be great if something like trying bcache-register
on non rotational devices were added to the udev rules:

 ENV{DEVTYPE}==disk, ATTR{queue/rotational}==0,
GOTO=bcache_backing_found

[Bug 1462495] [NEW] Init file does not respect the LSB spec.

2015-06-05 Thread Jorge Niedbalski
Public bug reported:

[Environment]

Trusty 14.02

[Description]

Looking in the /etc/init.d/haproxy script, particularly the stop method,
is returning 4 in case of the pidfile doesn't exists.

 /bin/kill $pid || return 4.

According to the spec that means 'insufficient privileges' which is not
correct. This is causing pacemaker and other
system monitoring tools to fail because it doesn't complains with LSB.

An example:

Jun  2 12:52:13 glance02 crmd[2518]:   notice: process_lrm_event:
glance02-res_glance_haproxy_monitor_5000:22 [ haproxy dead, but
/var/run/haproxy.pid exists.\n ]
Jun  2 12:52:13 glance02 crmd[2518]:   notice: process_lrm_event: LRM operation
res_glance_haproxy_stop_0 (call=33, rc=4, cib-update=19, confirmed=true)
insufficient privileges

Reference:

haproxy_stop()
{
if [ ! -f $PIDFILE ] ; then
# This is a success according to LSB
return 0
fi
for pid in $(cat $PIDFILE) ; do
/bin/kill $pid || return 4
done
rm -f $PIDFILE
return 0
}

[Proposed solution]

Backport the current devel (wily) init.

Allow admin-choosen DH parameters for DHE enabled cipher-modes

In order to be EAL4+ validated for one of our customers, Apache needs to
be able to support 2048+ bits group size for Diffie-Hellman parameters.
Right now, temporary parameters are 512 and 1024 bits only.

We can still disallow DH at all, leaving only RSA for authentication and
pre-master secret encryption, but that's a suboptimal solution, as we
then loose forward secrecy.

Adding a 2048 bits DH temporary key into mod_ssl is not possible, since
OpenSSL would only ask for a 512/1024 bits one, depending on the
exportability of the choosen ciper-mode.

This patch adds a new configuration directive, SSLDHParametersFile file,
allowing the administrator to supply its own Diffie-Hellman parameters
(openssl dhparam 2048 dhparam2048.pem to generate 2048 bits ones, for
example).
If this directive is specified and parameters are found in the supplied file,
then these parameters will be used whenever DHE is used to negociate the
pre-master secret. If this directive is not used, then it works like it does
now, leaving OpenSSL ask mod_ssl for a set of parameters of the desired size
(512 or 1024 bits).

We'd like this to be evaluated, discussed, and if possible, applied.

Regards.

A new version of the patch has been provided, based on httpd 2.4.2.
When generating your own DH parameters, add the -dsaparam option to openssl
commandline, this speeds up the handshake by about 15% for a 1024bits prime to
30% for a 2048bits prime.
With -dsaparam option, the private key is limited to 160 bits for a 2048bits
prime, and 256 bits for a =2048bits one. You then have 80bits of security for
a 1024bits prime, but based on NFS results you can't get much.
2048bits prime with a 256bits private key length gives you 128bits of security.

[Bug 1462521] [NEW] missing dependency on gdisk (sgdisk)

2015-06-05 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

some of the partitioning code in 'disk_setup' module needs sgdisk.
In the future that could move to using sfdisk also but for now we
do need sgdisk for this.

The ubuntu cloud images lost this in wily as cloud-initramfs-utils
(growpart) no longer needed sgdisk.
