currently has). Upgrades of clients and environments from juju 1.22.6 to

I think the bug here is that we display an unwieldy stack trace rather
than a nice error message.

Running "sudo maas " may cause this bug to occur, since the
~/.maascli.db will be created by the root user, rather than the

In short, install trusty, install juju, apt-get update && apt-get -u
dist-upgrade; then, use do-release-upgrade to upgrade from trusty to
vivid. This upgrade will fail and uninstalling juju will be the easiest
path forward for the administrator.

I filed https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/juju-core/+bug/1497087
for this bug.

The Debian tool piuparts is one way to do automated testing for this case,
it might be worth bringing it over to Ubuntu; in the meantime, teams need
to be aware to make sure that version numbers in supported releases always
allow upgrades.

Two questions from this: 
Which OpenStack release will include the above change?
Can above change to back-ported to OpenStack Kilo installations without other 
changes?

The above change is not visible in an OpenStack Kilo insallation.

What we need is to have the following templates to work this way: the
instances spawn by the autoscaling group will have names like server0,
server1, etc. where "server" is a server name stem specified on the name
property and %index% is mimicking the default index_var of
OS::Heat::ResourceGroup which is expected to be provided by the
OS::Heat::AutoScalingGroup.

Below are sample templates adopted from http://www.gossamer-
threads.com/lists/openstack/dev/48054#48054 -- corrections welcome
because we obviously have not tested them:

I believe that this change was primarily brought about by the change
from using bzr to git. The build and test infrastructure had to be
re-tooled to make this work.

We are unlikely to change from git.

The older versions of Juju were not very good at handling unknown
series. I have targeted a previously created bug to address this:

There are work-arounds that have been used by IS to upgrade older
environments.

We do test a number of upgrade combinations, and I'm curious as to why
you say it is impossible to upgrade? What exactly is the situation you
are attempting?

There are CI tests around upgrading from older versions to the current
tested release. I believe that one of these tests includes going from
1.18 to the current tested release.

In which cases is this really necessary?  All the chowns that the Juju
code base does is to either ubuntu, syslog or adm. Other chowns copy the
uid/gid directly from the source.

The first line returned in the WatchDebugLog is a serialized error, and
only a serialized error. The size of the error is always less than 200
bytes, but 4k is a nice block size. Once this initial error has been
returned, the websocket is used as a stream.

I don't believe we have a formal process at this stage. New TODO
comments are expected to have an associated bug, and a date.

expected behaviour until at least Juju 2.0.

I believe it expects one string, which may be multi-line, and each key
is on a different line.

It's just about version numbers, as Seth says.  The constraint that
should be satisfied is that, if a package is in both series A and series
B and B > A, then version(B, package) >= version(A, package).  juju-core
fails this constraint because 15.04 hasn't been upgraded to Juju 1.22.6
but 14.04 LTS has:

Fedora added a very basic systemd job at:

Thats not much help, as that just moves the failure to a native systemd
job.

openhpid exits 8 (SA_ERR_HPI_ERROR) when 'OPENHPI_UNCONFIGURED = "YES"'.
That might seem helpful, but it can also exit that on other conditions such as 
'err("Could not create first domain!")'.

it seems like we either need to:
 a.) not try to start and disable the service based on some reading of the conf 
file (if it has 'OPENHPI_UNCONFIGURED = "YES") . it seems like possibly 
execstartPre might be useful or ExecStartPost
 b.) patch source to exit some specific value on "unconfigured" and do not 
consider that fail

Anyone have any suggestions?
