[Bug 1124384] [NEW] cloud-init parses yaml incorrectly

2013-02-13 Thread Ben Howard
Public bug reported:

Example from failure: https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/raring-server-
ec2/ARCH=amd64,REGION=eu-west-1,STORAGE=ebs,TEST=multi-part-ud,label
=ubuntu-server-ec2-testing/17/console

Cloud-init is parsing YAML incorrectly
runcmd:
... - [ sh, -c, "echo = $(date) ': hello world!' = " ]
... - [ sh, -c, 'echo "$(date)" > /root/runcmd.date.txt' ]

[Bug 1111690] Re: [SRU] walinuxagent IsPackaged() logic is broken, runs two instances of waagent

2013-02-01 Thread Ben Howard
** Description changed:

- The variable used to determine whether or not it is packaged was not
- being exported. This results in two version of waaagent running.
+ [Impact]
+ All Azure instances that upgrade to agent 1.3 will have two versions of
waagent (the script responisable for bootstrap on Azure) running. This may
cause a race condition in the bootstrap, causing rebundled images to fail
provisioning.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ New Image test (built with -proposed packages)
+- Confirm that /etc/init/waagent is missing
+- Confirm that "dpkg -S waagent" is present in /var/log/waagent.log
+ Upgrade Image test:
+- upgrade image using update in main
+- Confirm that two agents are running:
+ status waagent
+ status walinuxagent
+- upgrade to -proposed
+- Confirm waagent init job is missing
+ status waagent (should return "status: Unknown job: waagent")
+- Confirm that "dpkg -s waagent" is present in /var/log/waagent.log
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ The regression potential is low, as this patch more intelligently determines
whether or not walinuxagent is installed by using dpkg.

  ---
- Original bug report
+ Updated bug report:
+
+ The variable used to determine whether or not it is packaged was not
+ being exported properly. This results in two version of waaagent
+ running.
+
+ ---
+ Original bug report:

A typo in the verb that instructs the package whether or not it in a package
has the incorrect verb.
The verb should be WAXLINUXAGENT_PACKAGED=1 not WALINUXAGENT_PACKAGED=1

This results in two version of the walinuxagent being executed.

[Bug 1091430] Re: 9p fails with readonly+non-root due to O_NOATIME

2012-12-19 Thread Ben Jencks
** Description changed:

  http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2012-01/msg02053.html

  Upstream QEMU commit: eed968607d656a218712df47a5e0432c21fd6994
hw/9pfs: Remove O_NOATIME flag from 9pfs open() calls in readonly mode

When a 9p filesystem is exported with the readonly flag, QEMU adds the
O_NOATIME flag to all accesses. This causes all reads to fail when qemu
is run as non-root and the runas user doesn't own the files being
accessed. The patch is a one-liner; please add it to the distribution
  patches.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Download ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso
+ 2. As a non-root user,
+
+ $ mkdir testdir
+ $ echo "value" > testdir/testfile
+ $ sudo chown -R root:root testdir
+
+ 3. Start the VM, again as a non-root user:
+
+ $ qemu-system-x86_64 -cdrom /path/to/ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso -vga
std -m 2048 \
+ -fsdev local,id=foo,path=testdir,security_model=none,readonly \
+ -device virtio-9p-pci,fsdev=foo,mount_tag=foo
+
+ 4. Inside the VM, select "Try Ubuntu", open a terminal, and run:
+
+ $ sudo mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L,ro foo /mnt
+ $ ls /mnt
+ testfile
+ $ cat /mnt/testfile
+
+ Expected results:
+ value
+
+ Actual results:
+ cat: /mnt/testfile: operation not permitted

to this package only affecting Windows Azure instances, this has minimial
impoact outside of Azure.
+
+ This package fixes the following issues:
+ - Added - load ata_piix.ko module loaded if needed for CDROM device
support
+ - Additional logging for DoDhcpWork()
+ - Update sock.recv timeout from 30 to 10 seconds
+ - Fix: Linux waagent deprovision, user is not deleted properly
+ - Fix: Make LBProbeResponder construction more robust
+ - Fix: Agent fails to provision user with public/private key pairs
+ - Fix: DHCP broadcast response not received
+ - Fix: Linux agent fails to delete root user password
+ - Fix: Linux agent should report error messages to Fabric when
+passed an invalid hostname.
+
+ Microsoft reports that with out this new version of the Windows Azure
+ agent, there is a 25% chance of provisioning failures. Therefore, this
+ patch is urgently needed as a SRU.
+
+
+ [Test Case]
+ N/A
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Limited; this package has been testing in raring already and is only used in
Azure hosted instances.
+
+ [Original Bug Report]
+ Microsoft has asked us to package WALinuxAgent version 1.2

[Bug 876387] Re: fuser forking uncontrollably in cron job

2012-11-26 Thread Ben White
Also happening here.

- Ubuntu 12.04.1 64-bit
- PHP 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.4 with Suhosin-Patch (cli)
- psmisc Installed: 22.15-2ubuntu1.1

Unsure how to list versions of other PHP packages, but happy provide
more information if needed.

As a temporary fix, I have removed the fuser part of the cron job as per
the suggestion here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11370262&postcount=2

But this feels like a bandaid solution - I'd like to get this sorted out
properly.

[Bug 1068365] Re: openvswitch gre tunnels not working in quantal

2012-10-23 Thread Ben Pfaff
> The dkms package was disabled as its not compatible with the 3.5
kernel; this decision was taken under the assumption that the upstream
kernel module was feature comparable with the dkms provided kernel
module.

That's right, the Open vSwitch FAQ says:

Q: What features are not available in the Open vSwitch kernel datapath
that ships as part of the upstream Linux kernel?

A: The kernel module in upstream Linux 3.3 and later does not include
   the following features:

   - Bridge compatibility, that is, support for the ovs-brcompatd
daemon that (if you enable it) lets "brctl" and other Linux
bridge tools transparently work with Open vSwitch instead.

We do not expect bridge compatibility to ever be available in
upstream Linux. If you need bridge compatibility, use the
kernel module from the Open vSwitch distribution instead of the
 upstream Linux kernel module.

   - Tunnel virtual ports, that is, interfaces with type "gre",
"ipsec_gre", "capwap". It is possible to create tunnels in
Linux and attach them to Open vSwitch as system devices.
However, they cannot be dynamically created through the OVSDB
protocol or set the tunnel ids as a flow action.

Work is in progress in adding these features to the upstream
Linux version of the Open vSwitch kernel module. For now, if
you need these features, use the kernel module from the Open
vSwitch distribution instead of the upstream Linux kernel
 module.

   - Patch virtual ports, that is, interfaces with type "patch".
You can use Linux "veth" devices as a substitute.

We don't have any plans to add patch ports upstream.

[Blueprint servercloud-r-cloudtesting] Cloud Image Testing and Automation

2012-10-11 Thread Ben Howard
Blueprint changed by Ben Howard:

Whiteboard changed:
+ [TEST PLAN]
+ The core of this blue print is adding tests. Therefore the implementation of
this blue print is a test itself.
+
+ [ASSUMPTIONS]
+ It is assumed that this will be a multi-cycle blue print that will undergo
refinement. Implementation of some pieces may happen in later cycles.
+
+ [RISKS]
+ The biggest risk for implementation is cost. For some cloud vendors, the
ability to implement all tests would represent a significant financal burden.
This risk will be mitigated by stepping tests such that only relavent tests
will be done as approprate.
+
+ [RELEASE NOTE]
+ Starting with "r", the Ubuntu Cloud Images are now on a release cadance that
follows the kernel SRU process. In general, new Cloud Images for all supported
stable releases and long-term releases will follow a few days after
availability of kernel, gcc and other boot-critical packages. Further, all
released daily builds undergo exhaustive testing to ensure quality and to check
regressions, performance and integration into Cloud environments. Users who are
interested in tracking the testing can find the test results on
http://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com and http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com.

[Bug 1064758] [NEW] ldapdelete fails on recursive deletes

2012-10-09 Thread Ben Beuchler
Public bug reported:

ldapdelete -Wx -H ldapi:/// -r dc=test,dc=example,dc=com
Enter LDAP Password:
ldap_delete: Other (e.g., implementation specific) error (80)
ldap_delete: Operation not allowed on non-leaf (66)
additional info: subordinate objects must be deleted first

The top level of the database is dc=example,dc=com. There are a couple
of hundred subordinate entries under dc=test,dc=example,dc=com.
According to the ldapdelete man page:

-r Do a recursive delete. If the DN specified isn't a leaf, its
children, and all their children are deleted down the tree. No
verification is done, so if you add this switch, ldapdelete will
happily delete large portions of your tree. Use with care.

I would expect that this would delete the entire branch of the LDAP tree
from dc=test,dc=example,dc=com on down.

[Bug 1061154] [NEW] pgsql.cfg includes a check_pgsql_4 command, but check_pgsql does not actually take the -4 argument

2012-10-03 Thread Ben Coleman
Public bug reported:

The /etc/nagios-plugins/config/pgsql.cfg configuration file includes a
check_pgsql_4 command, which should force the connection to use IPv4.
However, the program called, /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_pgsql, does
not actually accept the -4 parameter. I'd rather see this fixed by
adding the -4 parameter to check_pgsql than by deleting the command from
pgsql.cfg, as this is actully a useful function.

[Bug 1052664] [NEW] 12.10 cloud-init injects comment into /etc/HOSTNAME

2012-09-18 Thread Ben Howard
Public bug reported:

On the desktop builds, the default desktop environment does not respond
favorably to having a comment in /etc/hostname -- it inserts "# Created
by cloud-init\n" in the bash line.

ubuntu@# cat /etc/hostname
# Created by cloud-init

ubuntu@# Created by cloud-init
ip-10-196-141-203:~$ ls

[Bug 928990] Re: fsck / dirty filesystem on instance is death

2012-09-07 Thread Ben Howard
for this bug, later in the cycle we'll be publishing a "rescue" EBS
volume for booting from. All the other options would include a dramatic
change of behavior that would not be desireable for users -- like a
"rescue SSH console" or some other nonsense.

The path forward will be:
  - Canonical will publish a "rescue volume" which is a cloud image with a
label of "RESCUE_VOL".
  - Cloud-Init on boot will recognize this rescue volume and swtich over to the
rescue volume (Cloud init launches before the general mount)
  - Users will then rescue their system the same way

The rescue volumes should land sometime this cycle.

** Changed in: cloud-init (Ubuntu Quantal)
   Status: Triaged => Won't Fix

[Bug 1045444] [NEW] amavisd-new tries to load perl modules that don't exist

2012-09-03 Thread ben thielsen
Public bug reported:

when starting amavisd-new, the following can be seen in the log:

INFO: no optional modules: unicore::Canonical.pl unicore::Exact.pl
unicore::PVA.pl

those modules don't appear to be part of any ubuntu perl packages, and
iiuc, haven't been part of perl since ~5.8/5.9?

i'm wondering what functions those modules provide, if those functions
are now handled by other perl modules.

thanks

[Bug 1045444] Re: amavisd-new tries to load perl modules that don't exist

2012-09-03 Thread ben thielsen
additional details:

>lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release:12.04

>apt-cache policy amavisd-new
amavisd-new:
  Installed: 1:2.6.5-0ubuntu3.2

i expected amavis to not attempt to load those modules if they've been
replaced with something else.

[Bug 1037060] Re: openvswitch-datapath-dkms 1.4.2+git20120612-2ubuntu1: openvswitch kernel module failed to build

2012-08-15 Thread Ben Pfaff
This could presumably be fixed by applying upstream commit 3d192f8e5655
"datapath: Use ETH_ALEN instead of VLAN_ETH_ALEN". I don't think that
OVS branch-1.4 is supposed to support kernel 3.5 however.

[Bug 914160] Re: [MIR] openvswitch

2012-08-14 Thread Ben Pfaff
I hope that you guys at Ubuntu are aware that I'm proposing an
alternative to get into Debian wheezy, as opposed to what's in Debian
sid at the moment. The full details are at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=683771

(I proposed this weeks ago but it seems that the Debian release team is
moving very slowly.)

i gather this means that this module is independently implementing the
algorithm rather than using existing [openssl/gnutls/etc] libraries? is
there a compromise that might be reached?

[Bug 1033096] [NEW] request to have sha2 module in contrib included in package

2012-08-04 Thread ben thielsen
Public bug reported:

there is an sha2 module in the openldap source contrib directory which
implements the following sha2 password hashing schemes:

{SSHA-512}
{SSHA-384}
{SSHA-256}
{SHA-512}
{SHA-384}
{SHA-256}

i'd like to have it included in the slapd package.

the module can be found in contrib/slapd-modules/passwd/sha2/

following the standard "make depend" when building openldap, the module
can be built by running "make" in its directory. note that i had to add
-fPIC to CCFLAGS in order to get it to build - e.g:

CCFLAGS = -Wall -g -fPIC

this may or may not be the right way to do this.

It's obviously the bug fixed here:

[Bug 1016695] Re: add console=tty1 to cloud-image kernel boot parameters

2012-07-13 Thread Ben Howard
Re comment #9

Scott,

I have no intention of changing anything until a through test is done
for the _exact_ concerns that your raising.

> The change does seem reasonable, but I just want to avoid making arbitrary
> changes that we do not completely understand.
My comment about the change being "innocent enough" is misleading, since it
implies that that I think there would be no reprocussions.

> I'm also concerned about arm arch, where ttyX might not be meaningful.
It seems likely that the kernel has sane behavior, but I'd like to know
for sure.

For ARM, tty1 would mean no console output. Right now we configure the
ARM images to use the ARM serial console seperately anyway.

[Bug 962189] Re: dkms module is not automatically rebuild when installing new linux-image package

2012-06-18 Thread Ben Pfaff
> It seems I found a fix for this.

Thanks, I sent out a patch to ovs-dev:
http://openvswitch.org/pipermail/dev/2012-June/018075.html

With luck, it will be committed to the OVS repository today and then go
into Debian in a day or two.

Thank you very much!

[Bug 1013804] Re: package openvswitch-pki 1.4.0-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-06-15 Thread Ben Pfaff

top of it. It failed

Oh, I see. You installed OVS programs earlier in your $PATH than the
packaged versions and were surprised that this didn't work well. I
think the answer is "don't do that then."

[Bug 1013804] Re: package openvswitch-pki 1.4.0-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-06-15 Thread Ben Pfaff
This message is very odd, because it implies that "configure" was not run
correctly, to use /var instead of /usr/local/var:
  /usr/local/bin/ovs-pki: /usr/local/var/lib/openvswitch/pki already exists
and --force not specified
That is in fact probably the reason for the problem, because the postinst for
openvswitch-pki only runs "ovs-pki init" if /var/lib/openvswitch/pki does not
exist, but if "ovs-pki init" is creating files somewhere else then this check
will not help.
