[Bug 1336847] Re: apache2 SSL mpm-worker mod_fcgid Resource deadlock avoided

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Markus,
sorry to get to this so late.

I couldn't reproduce that today.
But then "a while even under non heavy server" is kind of unspecific.
Also there were plenty of updates to the packages

If this really still applies to your environment please share more detail on
what you do to reproduce this.
Until then I'd mark the bug incomplete to help the overview of open bugs.
Please if you want and can provide the data and that issue still affects you
feel free to set it back to new.

[Bug 1307156] Re: package apache2 2.4.6-2ubuntu2.2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: EOF on stdin at conffile prompt

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
it looks like some files were removed manually.

modified.conffile..etc.apache2.conf.available.charset.conf: [deleted]
modified.conffile..etc.apache2.conf.available.localized.error.pages.conf:
[deleted]
modified.conffile..etc.apache2.conf.available.other.vhosts.access.log.conf:

modified.conffile..etc.apache2.conf.available.security.conf: [deleted]
modified.conffile..etc.apache2.conf.available.serve.cgi.bin.conf: [deleted]
modified.conffile..etc.bash.completion.d.apache2: [deleted]

In that case behaviour is kind of undefined.
If this still is an issue for you please consider purging (properly removing)
and reinstalling the package.
Marking the bug incomplete, feel free to reopen if that still is an issue after

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
I agree to Robies summary that this should be filed and discussed with
Debian first to avoid getting a Delta for this.

Chaskiel, could I ask you to be so kind and open/discuss that with Debian.
Especially since you own the system where this happened first.

Thanks in advance if you do so, and let us know of the Debian bug numer.
We can link that here and get tracking as soon as it is resolved with Debian to
consider pulling it into Ubuntu as well.

[Bug 1558694] Re: control apache2 service with systemd unit rather then initd script

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Karl-Phillip,
I don't want to copy&paste the normal "please make a better bug report" to an
really active community member.
But please could you share a bit more on what you did in terms of configuration
and commands to get to your issue, so that it can be reproduced.
Because when just controling via "systemd unit rather then initd" is the
description I'd say that it works for me, but it is obvious that you have a
more complex setup and probably identified a real issue.

I'm setting the bug to incomplete until the data is provided for a better bug
tracking overview for now.
Please feel free to set back to new once the data is provided.

Did you set up something similar for your wsgi and if so would it
qualify as a dup to the other bug or should we keep it separate?

[Bug 1443224] Re: localized-error-pages.conf lacks config to preprocess /error/include page content

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
I was trying to reproduce your issue:

mkdir -p /var/www/localized-error-pages/
cp /usr/share/apache2/error/include/* /var/www/localized-error-pages/
*made a slight change to the bottom.html in there so I recognize the localized
error.

Uncommenting and adapting in
/etc/apache2/conf-available/localized-error-pages.conf:
Alias /error/include/ "/var/www/localized-error-pages/"
+ uncommenting the later 37 lines

I access non existing files and see in /var/log/apache2/access.log that the
access works.
When accessing a non existent file it didn't cause the same error, but then it
didn't show me a localized error either.
So it seems I failed to reproduce your issue because I can't figure out a
missing step :-/

But
I experimented a bit and actually
So the default config in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf has:

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Require all granted

And this should already cover /var/www/localized-error-pages/ to be accessible
by the server.
Of course not by the browser directly as the document root goes to
/var/www/html but I think it should be includable.

Did you set up a custom dir other than /var/www on your system?

[Bug 1463635] Re: Apache2 waits indefinetely when reloading

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
you are right that default configurations should be sane.
I totally like your report on the potential DOS, by keeping a connection open
and so stalling the restart forever.
So I don't just want you or me to close it.
But then the GracefulShutdownTimeout being zero is the apache default - not one
set by Ubuntu.

I see two issues in "just" changing that:
- while discussion worthy, some other users might expect it to behave as it did
up to now
- Upstream must have a reason to keep the default at zero (I hope)

I'd suggest to bring the matter to discussion upstream with Apache.
There the experts can much better quantify the reality of an attack due to this
or any other implications.
E.g. the answer to why exactly the connections remain open and what
could/should be done.

Once there is agreement and a patch that changes the upstream default
new versions will pick it up and it could be back-ported to old versions
as needed.

Thank you Hikari Kobayashi for reporting the issue and even doing the

This was backported to 2.4.11 and therefore obviously is also in 2.4.18.
Thereby Xenial and Wily are not affected.

Note: This is a regression 2.2.22 (precise) -> 2.4.7 (trusty) since migrating
from mod_authn_alias to mod_authn_core.

[Bug 1552822] Re: apache2 fails to wait on stop/restart

2016-03-31 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi David,
I tried reproducing this while triaging to confirm and set bug status.

In a trivial loop like:
  for i in {1..100}; do echo $i; service apache2 restart; done;
It almost always blocks it by
  Mar 31 11:09:34 xenial-tests systemd[1]: apache2.service: Start request
repeated too quickly.
  Mar 31 11:09:34 xenial-tests systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: Apache2 web
server.

I also installed wsgi and some other mods to slow down start/stop, but that
didn't help either.
(apt-get install libapache2-mod-wsgi libapache2-mod-nss libapache2-mod-scgi
libapache2-mod-webauth libapache2-modsecurity)
Installing these slows it down, so that systemd no more complains about it
restarting too quickly, but it doesn't trigger the issue.

Did you something more to better trigger the issue in your tests?

[Bug 1398001] Re: package clamav 0.98.5+dfsg-0ubuntu0.14.10.1 failed to install/upgrade: beroendeproblem - lämnar okonfigurerad

2016-03-30 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi rolfc,
thank you for reporting that bug.
It appears on your system some conffiles were deleted.
 modified.conffile..etc.apparmor.d.usr.sbin.clamd: [deleted]
 modified.conffile..etc.init.d.clamav.daemon: [deleted]
 modified.conffile..etc.logcheck.ignore.d.paranoid.clamav.daemon: [deleted]
 modified.conffile..etc.logcheck.ignore.d.server.clamav.daemon: [deleted]
That is like just "rm" those files instead of removing a package.

I'd recommend purging (apt-get remove --purge) the clamav packages and
reinstalling them to get rid of the issue.

I'll set the bug status to incomplete, please feel free to reopen if the
problem persists.
In that case please add what you did to purge/reinstall and the new/old error
log.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for you report - I've seen several such reports popping up around the
same time.
Almost all others had success with purging and reinstalling the clamav packages.

I'd ask you to do the same.

I set the bug to incomplete to ease scanning open bugs, please feel free
to reopen if the bug persists.

[Bug 216847] Re: sshd will not start at boot if ListenAddress is set, because network interface is not yet up

2016-03-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Since so many things changed since this - admittedly embarrassing old -
bug was reported I thought I retest it before the next LTS comes out.

I looked at the Xenial content and found stuff like:
Not only is it specified "After network.target", but on top there is
/etc/network/if-up.d/openssh-server which is intended to restart openssh if
later an iface comes up, there it would be able to rebind that IP.

I tested on containers first and it worked right away, setting ListenAddress
and restarting.
But well in containers devices might be "up" at a different timing, but even in
a KVM Guest, setting ListenAddress again it works just fine.
Mar 24 14:54:43 testxenial-ssh sshd[1293]: Server listening on 192.168.122.131
port 22.

I wondered and wanted to make sure that the test is valid, so I spawned
trusty (LTS), vivid (last reported issue) and wily

But - for me - it was working on all of them - even with several retries
it was not even racy.

Therefore I wanted to ask for a retest - at least with Xenial if possible.
Also any detail about the test environment that was used would be great -
especially by the last confirmation in vivid.
Does it have to be a special network card that might initialize slowly or
anything like it?

[Bug 1512603] Re: nut-monitor systemd service is absent in nut-client package since Ubuntu vivid

2016-03-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
in Xenial 2.7.2-4ubuntu1 got merged.

The issue that our delta solved by dropping of the systemd service, seems
solved in Debian >=2.7.2
The Debian Changelog part in 2.7.2-2 is:
   * Add wrappers that check the MODE in /etc/nut/nut.conf to avoid starting

the daemons if nut is not configured (Closes: #747863).

Yet the merge kept our related delta:
 - Disable systemd unit; it does not check nut.conf whether nut is

configured, and thus fails to start (and the package install). The

init.d script works well enough for the time being.

Andrew (computershik-ya) wrote on 2015-11-05:
[...] The init.d script was a broken symlink to nut-client [...]
At least that seems solved as it installs correctly a init.d script that
systemd uses as fallback.

file /etc/init.d/nut-client
/etc/init.d/nut-client: POSIX shell script, ASCII text executable
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 27 09:36 /etc/init.d/ups-monitor -> nut-client*

Debian has both systemd services again, but it might be too late before release
to do that change in case it is working as-is again.
See: https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/nut-client/filelist

I had issues getting a proper Test done in my Xenial container.
But given the package merge and the proper link that is existing now I'd highly
encourage the reporters who likely have a working UPS setup to test this with
Xenial.

If you could share some of your setup to test it and the issues that
appear that will also help to consider and work on dropping&testing the
delta regarding the systemd services. Especially since it is late in the
cycle.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1204530] Re: yppasswd results in a segmentation fault when run on clients or server

2016-03-23 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
[Impact]

 * The bug is a segfault on yppasswd rendering users unable to change their
passwords
 * justification for the SRU is the continued request by users and the fact
that it is a very minimal change
 * the fix ensures that a lib accessing data unconditionally only gets called
if the values are properly initialized

[Test Case]
 * install nis
 * Config in /etc/default/nis:NISSERVER=master
 * Config in /etc/yp.conf:   ypserver 127.0.0.1
 * Initialize with
 $ sudo /usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m
 $ restart rpcbind
 * Test if your config works
 $ ypcat passwd
 should show something like
 ubuntu:x:1000:1000:Ubuntu:/home/ubuntu:/bin/bash
 * Trigger the bug
 $ yppasswd -p ubuntu
Changing NIS account information for ubuntu on wily.localdomain.
 Please enter root password:
Changing NIS password for ubuntu on wily.localdomain.
 Please enter new password:
 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

[Regression Potential]

 * While it is assumed to not regress, if it does it is affected to break
yppasswd even more (and while more than a segfault is hard to imagine I mean it
might even break for those people that today got around it by some complex and
weird workarounds.)
 * The code is only local to the tool yppasswd and it is not part of a lib or
so, so the impact - if any - should stay local

[Other Info]

 * I really want to encourage the users reporting it being important to them
testing it once in proposed to have more than just my tests.
 * I wanted to nominate to be able to keep tracking Wily as Fix Released and
Trusty as pending but that doesn't seem to work.
It would be great if the Sponsor with the proper permissions could also set the
proper "Affects" status for those two releases

[Bug 1204530] Re: yppasswd results in a segmentation fault when run on clients or server

2016-03-23 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Ok, I did the backport.
This package is somewhat scary old at some places (no patches, dh compatibility
level 1 - well undefined).

Yet I was able to keep changes minimal and the changes that went into
the Debian upgrade from .33 to .34 applied as is.

It is building fine in trusty.

I revived my old testbed and confirmed that the fix is really fixing the issue.
With the fix it was working cleanly changing the PW back and forth where it
formerly segfaulted as reported in this bug.

After quite some analysis and debugging I could identify an issue regarding
double configuring the device.
Daniele replied to the mailing list request I had and suggested backporting an
virtio fix that came after 2.2.

That worked well, with backporting these I can get it to work now.
Thanks Daniele.

[Bug 1560839] Re: libdpdk0 should provide a package for debug symbols

2016-03-23 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Reading through dh_strip since we have no old -dbg package to care about
it might be enough to just do:

export EXTRA_CFLAGS = -g

- the export makes sure we build it for all binaries
- dh_strip magically does the right thing and should create a dbgsym packages
as appropriate

[Bug 1560839] [NEW] libdpdk0 should provide a package for debug symbols

2016-03-23 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

DPDK is great but still bleeding edge from time to time.
So debugging is likely to happen at some point.
Therefore it would be great to have an explicit -dbg or implicit -dbgsyms
package such with debug symbols for DPDK 2.2 in Xenial.

[Bug 1559912] Re: Openvswitch 2.5 + dpdk 2.2 totally failing for virtio PMD

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Info on progress.
No feedback from communities so far.
After various other DPDK fixes took 3/4 of my day I set up a more thorough
debugging environment derived from my testing env, but the real debugging
itself has to start tomorrow morning.

[Bug 1559981] Re: dpdk stability improvements by cherry picking from 16.04-rc1

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
I had a focus on identifying:
- only patches to components that are enabled in our packaging
- issues that have a real chance to occur on the usage we expect for 16.04
timeframe
- patches that are small, so review is not overly complex
- apply without manual adaption (offset ok to some extend, no fuzz, no manual
fix)

[Bug 1559408] Re: Many PMD driver options are disabled, including "BNX2X"!

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Martin since I'm happy you work with that code base I'd recommend you create a
test setup based on virtio.
You will still be blocked on bug 1559912 for now, but I'm working on that this
week and stil hope to get some upstream support.

I'll reject this bug for the given reasons now, but please catch me on
IRC for a more interactive discussion if you like.

[Bug 1559408] Re: Many PMD driver options are disabled, including "BNX2X"!

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
I checked the other default disabled drivers.
To all some kind of incompleteness, non-support or being only stubs applies.

It could be said, that the same is true for the virtual ones we enable like
PCAP and XEN.
But there is a major difference in:
- nobody is "buying" the HW for pcap or XEN to then realize it is not supported
- those virtual environments are good for experiments and proof of concepts but
not suitable for most production cases anyway

So (keep) enabling those virtual ones is kind of ok, while I'd consider
enabling the PMDs for more of the HW cards is not.

To get those enabled in my opinion one has to work with the upstream
project to get it properly supported and default enabled.

[Bug 1559981] [NEW] dpdk stability improvements by cherry picking from 16.04-rc1

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

DPDK is great, but also a very fast moving project.
Looking at quite some commits post dpdk 2.2 shows that there are various issues
that we should not let our customers run into, but instead backport some
non-functional but bug fixing patches from upstream dpdk into our 2.2 release.

Just as some fixes that we found in testing and provided them upstream
plus packaging them - there are many more that fall into the same
category.

Please analyze potential fixes and try to integrate in packaging.
It would be a tremendous improvement to the stability of DPDK to get at least
some of them.

[Bug 1559408] Re: Many PMD driver options are disabled, including "BNX2X"!

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
As an example what I meant to imply here the reason why it is disabled
by default as of now.

commit ce9b8bb8b99877026fcca00fdb253fa3ec3a7e06
Author: Thomas Monjalon
Date: Tue Jul 28 18:22:39 2015 +0200

config: disable bnx2x driver

This driver has too many issues:
- too big
- bad coding style
- no git history (dropped in 2 patches)
- no documentation
- no BSD support
- no maintainer
And the biggest one, constraining this disabling:
- many build issues

If the last 4 issues are not fixed in the next release 2.2,
the driver must be removed.

[Bug 1559408] Re: Many PMD driver options are disabled, including "BNX2X"!

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Thiago,
you were busy weren't you :-)

Thanks your further experiments and reports - I'll try to refer all the open
points.
Trying to summarize:

1. The vfio grouping issue is not a bug, just the vfio setup being more complex
in general. But you already handled that for your setup - great.
But as you found - eventually a working vfio and a uio_pci_generic gets you to
the same - the PMD driver (trying to) work on the card.

2. Firmware issue - that is very specific to the BNX2X_PMD PMD and Cards you
use.
I'd consider adding something to the Readme if we end up enabling that driver,
but not really considering pushing oco FW packages with dpdk. Yet that should
help the next getting to it.

3. Enabling this or other PMDs.
You already did for for your experiments which is great, but so far we only
enabled those that were enabled by default and only a few that different
parties have asked for. There are some reasons not "just" to enable all others.
- One is testability - I don't have all the HW and also time is short while
still more issue being open against dpdk.
- the other one is that a lessons learned is that everything that is not
actively used/tested is broken or at least can not be considered very stable.
As dpdk by history came from a "build the solution with the dpdk source"
approach where he specific solution setup can apply a multitude of tweaks/fixes
without caring about "others" too much that is not a good option for a
generically provided package.
On the good side though, until the specific cards PMD driver is used the code
is not really active.
Unfortunately I don't see a good option of saying something like "and these 5
more PMD are experimental" - I need to discuss that with more experienced
packagers.
Maybe an extra package that brings "more" pmd drivers named dpdk-experimental,
but that would due to its dependencies still have to be in main which I don't
like. Also this is not working well with the combined library approach being
used and linker script based solution is post dpdk 2.2

4. segfault/mem alloc issue
That is an interesting one which I was working on last week as well.
In fact this is not specific to your PMD driver - I was hitting that with
virtio-pci based setup which should be "more" supported (default enabled by
upstream dpdk). It is an issue that as far as I can tell only occurs in
combination with OVS-DPDK (testpmd and such are running fine).
I was just about filing a bug to track that effort - please see 1559912

Final summary:
- I'll discuss if it is doable/reasonable to enable so more low-tested extra
drivers with some co-devs here for this bug.
- We will track the issues regarding ovs-dpdk+dpdk+some-PMDs in bug 1559912

[Bug 1559912] Re: Openvswitch 2.5 + dpdk 2.2 totally failing for virtio PMD

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
It was also reported in 1559408 that this also affects BNX2X_PMD

** Description changed:

*as a start same text as my reach for the involved project mailing
  lists*

I was trying to replicate a setup that I have working on physical devices
(ixgbe) under kvm since there is a virtio pmd driver.

  TL;DR:
  - under KVM with virtio-pci (working on baremetal with ixgbe cards)
  - adding dpdk port to ovs fails with memzone already exists
  and causes a segfault
  - I couldn't find a solution in similar mails that popped up here recently,
  any help or pointer appreciated.

  ## Details ##
I thought I've read that others have it working I thought that would be a
great way to gain more debug control of the environment, but something
  seems to be eluding me.

There were quite some similar mails on the List recently, but none seemed
to hit the same issue as I do. At least none of the tunings/workarounds
  seemed to apply to me.
  As versions I have Openvswitch 2.5, DPDK 2.2, Qemu 2.5, Kernel 4.4 - so a
  fairly recent software stack.

  The super-short repro summary is:
  1. starting ovs-dpdk like
  ovs-vswitchd --dpdk -c 0x1 -n 4 --pci-blacklist :00:03.0 -m 2048 --
  unix:/var/run/openvswitch/db.sock -vconsole:emer -vsyslog:err -vfile:info
  --mlockall --no-chdir --log-file=/var/log/openvswitch/ovs-vswitchd.log
  --pidfile=/var/run/openvswitch/ovs-vswitchd.pid --detach --monitor
  2. add a bridge and a ovs dpdk port
  ovs-vsctl add-port ovsdpdkbr0 dpdk0 -- set Interface dpdk0 type=dpdk
  ovs-vsctl add-port ovsdpdkbr0 dpdk0 -- set Interface dpdk0 type=dpdk

The log of the initialization after #1 looks good to me - I can see two of
my three virtio devices recognized and one blacklisted.
Memory allocation looks good, ... I'll attach the log at the end of the mail

-
  ## ISSUE ##
But when I add a port and refer to one of the dpdk ports it fails with the
  following:
  ovs-vsctl[14023]: ovs|1|vsctl|INFO|Called as ovs-vsctl add-port

  ## Experiments (failed) ##
I thought it could be related to all the multiqueue chances that recently
  going in.
My usual setup has 4 vCPUs and 4 queues per virtio-net device.
I tried them with only 1 of 4 queues, also with only 1 queue defined and

[Bug 1559912] [NEW] Openvswitch 2.5 + dpdk 2.2 totally failing for virtio PMD

2016-03-21 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

## ISSUE ##
But when I add a port and refer to one of the dpdk ports it fails with the
following:
ovs-vsctl[14023]: ovs|1|vsctl|INFO|Called as ovs-vsctl add-port

## Experiments (failed) ##
I thought it could be related to all the multiqueue chances that recently
going in.
My usual setup has 4 vCPUs and 4 queues per virtio-net device.
I tried them with only 1 of 4 queues, also with only 1 queue defined and
only 1 CPU - but all fail the same way.
I have testpmd and l2fwd on the same devices working, so I hope they are
not totally set up badly.

I also tried hilarious things like reassigning to uio_pci_generic before,
but well its virtio_pmd eventually anyways - so it made no difference.

[Bug 1558485] [NEW] init script can fail when devices are unassigned

2016-03-19 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

While usually not the case when the init script runs devices could be
unassigned when e.g. a service dpdk restart happens.

In that case the code already does the right things but has still some
implementation details that fail afterwards.
Also in that path it still has a remaining tr change o - to _ which is wrong,
see bug 1554214.

Both should be fixed, so that in case an admin or experiment unassigned
devices and wants to get back to normal by restarting the script would
not fail.

It seems we have to decide if we want to hardcode a directory path for
the non-default mountpoint or if we want to replicate dpdks logic to
parse and detect (including size recalculations).

The detection failure was a false positive.
The following would provide a sufficient mount point.

sudo mount -thugetlbfs hugetlbfs /dev/hugepages-1G -o "pagesize=1G"

Check code
opens /proc/mounts
gets pagesz_str defining what the mountpoint has
if nothing is set assume default size
if something is set in the mp's options calculate the size
check if this is the mountpoint matching
=> not working for my mountpoint

Need to be run in gdb, to check where exactly it is failing

[Bug 1557532] [NEW] dpdk fails to use 1G huge pages depending on the available mountpoints

2016-03-15 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

EAL: 6 hugepages of size 1073741824 reserved, but no mounted hugetlbfs found
for that size
EAL: No free hugepages reported in hugepages-2048kB

That can happen if:
- one configures ONLY 1G pages
and
- the default hugepage size is not 1G

That would be a lack of our dpdk-init script, but actually even when mounting a
1G mountpoint it fails.
It needs to be debugged in what way it expects a non-default size hugepage
mount and then provided by dpdk init scripts OR fixed in dpdk code.

[Bug 1557116] [NEW] hwup very noisy fails on each boot for unconfigured devices

2016-03-14 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

In System z one often has plenty of devices in the channel subsystem but
only a few of them configured.

Currently
/etc/sysconfig/scripts/hardware/hwup
/etc/sysconfig/scripts/hardware/functions

Print a log message like this:
Mär 14 09:30:43 s1lp5 systemd-udevd[1169]: Process '/sbin/hwup -A -D
/devices/css0/0.0.0160/0.0.1500 ccw 0.0.1500' failed with exit code 9.

For each unconfigured device.
That easily can be thousands on each boot, the bigger the environment the more.

The scripts should be updated to have this particular case (no config
for dev found) being a silent exit (rc=0, no message printed)

It juts currently buried under other priorities.

But I really intend to take a closer look at a potential SRU as soon as I

[Bug 1554214] Re: Usege of vfio-pci module via /etc/dpdk/interfaces doesn't work

The root cause is very easy - the "-" to "_" conversion in the scripts.
I'll have to discuss why that was added as it is from before my time.

I'll let you know about a solution.

[Bug 1554214] Re: Usege of vfio-pci module via /etc/dpdk/interfaces doesn't work

2016-03-08 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi - here a minor update

Regarding:
NOTE: To make it work manually, the module "vfio-pci" must be declared at
"/etc/modules" as well.

Yes it is required to load the module before dpdk_nic_bind, if running manually
you have to do it some way on your own e.g. /etc/modules.
If using the init scripts they will take care of it before calling
dpdk_nic_bind.

Also regarding vfio in general there is a lot of things that can go wrong
regarding the actual iommu setup.
I don't think that is your issue, but as FYI you might want to read into the
references in this mail =>
http://dpdk.org/ml/archives/dev/2016-February/05.html

going on to try this on my machine now ...

[Bug 1554397] [NEW] dpdk-init fails due to missing modules in virt environments

2016-03-08 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

In e.g. cloud images there is only the minimal "linux-image" which does
not pull in "linux-image-extra".

Now DPDK doesn't need linux-image-extra in such environments for there is a
virtio pmd driver.
But if people want to experiment with e.g. uio_pci_generic drivers in there the
init scripts will crash due to the missing kernel module.

I suggest two fixes:
1. make linux-image-extra-virtual a suggests of dpdk (recommends or depends
would be too hard given the relation)
2. further harden the init script to gracefully detect and warn about it
instead of failing
3. add a comment about the need into /etc/dpdk/interfaces so people can read it
while configuring instead when failing

So I'd say the issue you are currently facing has nothing to do with the bug.

I've seen your mail on the List and will reply there with some

[Bug 1554009] [NEW] use after free and mem leak in lpm6

2016-03-07 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

Debugging bundled autotests showed issues in DPDK 2.2.

Patches are sent upstream for discussion and should be integrated as add on
delta to our 2.2 release.
http://dpdk.org/dev/patchwork/patch/11067/
http://dpdk.org/dev/patchwork/patch/11065/

Currently we are waiting for the upstream discussion to finish and apply.
Then we will pick and apply those as backport patches in packaging.

[Bug 1423649] Re: DPDK port on Ubuntu

2016-03-03 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
Thanks Arthur for making me aware of this bug.
It wasn' filed against DPDK so I missed it on my screening.

FYI we have DPDK 2.2 in Xenial since February 19th.

FYI: The project upstream is fast moving and IMHO sometimes a bit brittle.
So as we are ramping up testing we are currently flushing out as much issues as
possible to make it more stable and consumable.
Therefore there are new revisions every now and then, but it is available and
if you use it and run into issues let me know.
I might be able to help and if not we will file it as a bug and
track/handle/prioritize it together with the others.

As usual look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpdk for known open
issues.
I'll add dpdk as affected packet and mark it properly, but let you do the OPNFV
bug status updates.

2016-03-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Discussion slowed down and patch series grew - still not committed.

The way the discussion went this included more and more of the change from
commandline to ovsdb config for dpdk.
That makes it uncertain if it will get into branch 2.5

2016-03-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
dpdk (2.2.0-0ubuntu4) xenial; urgency=medium

  * harden d/dpdk-init for configuration issues (LP: #1551601):
 - detect and warn about bad bus specifications
 - detect and warn about incomplete device specifications
 - detect and warn about non existing pci IDs
 - d/t/test-initscripts now testing various misconfigs
 - d/t/test-initscripts now also verifying service status
  * d/dpdk-init d/dpdk.conf now also support 1G hugepages (LP: #1551767):
 - detect and warn if 1G pages are not available but configured
 - d/t/test-initscripts now also testing hugepage allocations
 - d/dpdk.conf has an option to drop caches to incease the likeliness of
successful 1G hugepage allocations (default off)
  * d/rules replaced uname -m with DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU (LP: #1551796):
  * fix testpmd to run without Xen environment (LP: #1551752):
 - upstream discussion is slow, but we need a fix now. We can drop this
and change to the upstream solution when it is available.
  * unify whitespace/tabs in packaging and scripts
 - tabs/spaces to just spaces in d/dpdk-init and d/dpdk.init
 - few to tabs in d/rules
  * d/t/test-* now satisfy shellcheck
  * d/* fix various comments and guides to be more readable
  * d/dpdk-init and d/copyright updated copyright information

Changes would be ready for upload now.

I'll attach a debdiff dpdk_2.2.0-0ubuntu3-to-2.2.0-0ubuntu4.debdiff
But for much easier review change by change I would recommend

The respective content of this upload is from tag "debian/2.2.0-0ubuntu3" until
the head of the branch.

Overall it will fix this and three other bugs plus a few minor issues -
here the changelog FYI

 - detect and warn if 1G pages are not available but configured

 - d/t/test-initscripts now also testing hugepage allocations

 - d/dpdk.conf has an option to drop caches to incease the likeliness of

successful 1G hugepage allocations (default off)

  * d/rules replaced uname -m with DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU (LP: #1551796):

  * fix testpmd to run without Xen environment (LP: #1551752):

 - upstream discussion is slow, but we need a fix now. We can drop this

and change to the upstream solution when it is available.

  * unify whitespace/tabs in packaging and scripts

 - tabs/spaces to just spaces in d/dpdk-init and d/dpdk.init

 - few to tabs in d/rules

  * d/t/test-* now satisfy shellcheck
  * d/* fix various comments and guides to be more readable

  * d/dpdk-init and d/copyright updated copyright information

[Bug 1551752] Re: DPDK Testpmd failing with Xen specific gntalloc in non-Xen environments

2016-03-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Discussion seems to be slow, we will integrate the suggested fix until
upstream agreed on a final one and then convert our delta to the
upstream accepted solution.

[Bug 1547528] Re: How to handle specific HW needs for dep8 tests in CI

2016-03-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
DPDK (actually openvswitch-dpdk) related issue is solved - tests are now
detecting a lack of the feature and skip gracefully.
There were other bugs to track it, so removing the incoomplete DPDK bug
association from this bug.

This issue didn't get much updates recently as for now most discussion
goes on in RT 89040

** No longer affects: dpdk (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1551796] Re: DPDK build should avoid using uname -m

2016-03-01 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
I looked into it and while DEB_BUILD_ARCH doesn't match uname -m the
usage of something like the following should be appropriate.

DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU := $(shell dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_GNU_CPU)

... $(DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU)

I'm currently wrapping up several fixes where I can integrate this minor
patch (not worth an upload on its own)

[Bug 1551796] [NEW] DPDK build should avoid using uname -m

2016-03-01 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

I was made aware (thanks Ferseiti on IRC) that our d/rules file should not use
uname -m.
It was suggested to use DEB_BUILD_ARCH
