[Bug 1528251] Re: WARNING: no suitable primes in /etc/ssh/primes

I won't forget to do it with the 7.3 upload, and would rather have the
bug open until it's actually fixed.

[Bug 1528251] Re: WARNING: no suitable primes in /etc/ssh/primes

2016-03-30 Thread Colin Watson
Sorry, I mean OpenSSH in general of course, not just the client.

And yes, the other end ought to be able to cope with stronger primes.
But that's not what this bug is about: it specifically says "The alleged
problem is the reference to /etc/ssh/primes instead of /etc/ssh/moduli".

[Bug 1528251] Re: WARNING: no suitable primes in /etc/ssh/primes

2016-03-30 Thread Colin Watson
Sigh. No. It's a perfectly obvious bug in the OpenSSH client, it's
just mostly cosmetic (i.e. it's checking two files but then only warning
about one). Please read the original bug description carefully before
closing this or arguing further about whether it's valid.

[Bug 1554481] [NEW] [FFe] OpenSSH 7.2p1

2016-03-08 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

I'd like to upgrade OpenSSH to 7.2p1 in xenial, on the general principle
that keeping OpenSSH as up to date as possible is a good plan. There
are a few more changes to default crypto algorithms and some new
features, but they're relatively minor compared to 7.0/7.1.

http://www.openssh.com/txt/release-7.2

Packaging changes are minimal; about the only thing I've done is
reintroduce the slogin -> ssh symlinks removed by upstream in 7.2, in
line with Fedora.

[Bug 1554266] Re: sshd does not start on newly installed desktop system

2016-03-08 Thread Colin Watson
IRC speculation is that this might be due to
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/init-system-helpers/1.29ubuntu1,
although that isn't enough to determine whether it's a regression in
i-s-h or something that openssh is doing wrong that was just exposed by
that upload.

[Bug 1549473] Re: ssh will not start at boot: systemctl status ssh -> output is listed as failed 255.

2016-02-25 Thread Colin Watson
Please can you provide as much information as you have? For example,
"the ctl status is failed 255" is clearly a paraphrase of something that
you're seeing; it would be more useful if you could please copy and
paste the original text of the error messages.

Forum research is probably leading you up entirely the wrong path; that
sounds like information that predates systemd. The ssh.service unit has
"After=network.target".

"journalctl -u sshd" won't find anything because that's not what the
unit is called. Try "journalctl -u ssh".

2016-01-20 Thread Colin Watson
Specifically, the local configuration problem here is in the LSB header
of /etc/init.d/smfpd. This file isn't shipped by Ubuntu, so you will
have to work out how to correct it locally or refer to whoever maintains
the package containing it.

It's unfortunate that this takes out unrelated packages, but that's
insserv for you. :-(

[Bug 1534792] Re: unable to connect or load identity file

2016-01-20 Thread Colin Watson
The key_load_public bits are a red herring; it loads id_rsa(.pub)
successfully (you can tell because it says "type 1", not "type -1"), and
the immediately-subsequent error pertains to id_rsa-cert(.pub) instead.
So it's successfully loaded the available identity file.

I think the next steps here should have been:

 * increase debugging to -vvv rather than just -vv (no point in messing about,
might as well have the maximum debugging level)
 * see if there's any useful logging at the server end if you have root access
to it, probably in /var/log/auth.log

However, it seems that the network fix was sufficient? I would say that
a hang is a fairly typical response to a misconfigured network. ssh's
debugging output is primarily intended for developers, and I don't think
we (or upstream) would generally consider it a bug that it may require
reading the source code to determine what it means.

This is peculiar, because I don't believe we've ever written it out with
the upstream libexec path. Yes, the examples file shows it as libexec,
but we've written out "Subsystem sftp /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server" for
new installations since 2005.

Yes, lxc and liblxc1 are at the same version.

happened with 4.2.0-16.19 (I rebooted to see if that cleared it up).

[Bug 1516037] [NEW] lxc-start fails with 1.1.5-0ubuntu1

2015-11-13 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to lxc 1.1.5-0ubuntu1, lxc-start fails like this:

lxc-start: start.c: preserve_ns: 149 Permission denied - failed to open
'/proc/7170/ns/mnt'
lxc-start: start.c: lxc_spawn: 993 failed to store namespace references
lxc-start: start.c: __lxc_start: 1192 failed to spawn 'trusty-lpdev'
lxc-start: lxc_start.c: main: 344 The container failed to start.
lxc-start: lxc_start.c: main: 348 Additional information can be obtained by
setting the --logfile and --logpriority options.

This is with a trusty system container. precise system containers
behave similarly. I don't have others to try. Downgrading liblxc1,
lxc, lxc-templates, and python3-lxc to version 1.1.4-0ubuntu3 causes
lxc-start to work again.

[Bug 1507519] [NEW] Upgrading packages at jujud startup can interfere with other operations

2015-10-19 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

Last night I began the process of upgrading my laptop from vivid to
wily. I edited /etc/apt/sources.list and replaced vivid with wily, ran
"apt-get update", and then went off to do some other things while it
chewed on the network. Unfortunately one of those other things managed
to eat all my memory or otherwise hang my system, and I ended up
forcibly rebooting. On restart, I wondered why everything was taking so
long, logged in at a virtual console, and found that juju was non-
consensually starting a partial upgrade to wily for me! That isn't
cool. Here's a contemporaneous snapshot of ps output:

Because juju-mongodb depends on various bits of the C++ stack, in the
pathological case where the system is part-way through a distribution
upgrade, "apt-get install juju-mongodb" ends up trying to upgrade half
the system in the cause of getting to the new version. I ended up
killing it so that I could run the upgrade in a more sensibly supervised
way.

I can see why jujud wants to ensure that these packages are installed,
but it seems unnecessary and a layering violation to upgrade them if
they're already installed, and it runs the risk of getting into this
kind of situation. Could it please use "apt-get install --no-upgrade"
so that it's just doing the former rather than the latter?

Re: [Bug 1499392] Re: OpenSSH Security and SHA1

2015-10-05 Thread Colin Watson
Backporting algorithm tightening may make sense, but I don't want to end
up in a situation where users are trying to deal with interoperability
issues but none of the upstream docs make sense. If we're advocating
specific changes that upstream aren't currently already considering, we
should take that up with upstream.

Not yet. I'm actively working on the relevant bits of Launchpad

intend to vary algorithm choices from upstream configuration, but 7.1 is
already a fair bit better.

It's just about version numbers, as Seth says. The constraint that
should be satisfied is that, if a package is in both series A and series
B and B > A, then version(B, package) >= version(A, package).  juju-core
fails this constraint because 15.04 hasn't been upgraded to Juju 1.22.6
but 14.04 LTS has:

  $ rmadison juju-core | egrep 'trusty|vivid'

[Bug 1487361] Re: 6.9 stopped respecting "User" in previous stanzas

2015-08-21 Thread Colin Watson
I think this was deliberate upstream, probably this:

- ssh(1): Tweak config re-parsing with host canonicalisation - make the
second pass through the config files always run when host name
canonicalisation is enabled (and not whenever the host name changes)

In fact this was not documented to work before; even in Debian stable
the documentation for Host says "The host is the hostname argument given
on the command line (i.e. the name is not converted to a canonicalized
host name before matching)."

Try "CanonicalizeHostname yes", which is documented to control this.

[Bug 1485719] Re: Uninitialized struct field in the fix for CVE-2015-5600 causes random auth failures

2015-08-19 Thread Colin Watson
This patch is unnecessary with OpenSSH 6.5p1 and newer, because
kbdint_alloc now uses xcalloc rather than xmalloc and thus zeroes the
entire structure. The regression fix was thus only needed for precise
and not for later releases; I'll drop it from wily shortly when
resyncing with unstable, in the cause of keeping a smaller delta against
upstream.

[Bug 1460259] Re: Incorrect dependency for openvswitch-pki in trusty updates

This was a casualty of an infrastructure incident that went on long

[Bug 1393832] Re: Modules fail to enable when configured after apache2 is configured

2014-11-26 Thread Colin Watson
It took me a while to figure out how to reproduce this reliably; at
first I could reproduce it only in the context of autopkgtest, but not
in a minimal schroot. It took some strace analysis to figure it out.
This is not a dpkg bug after all.

What's happening here is that apache2 in Ubuntu ships ufw profiles,
which means that it fires the ufw trigger, but only if ufw is installed
(so in order to reproduce this in a minimal schroot you first need to
install ufw). This causes apache2 to have "Status: install ok triggers-
awaited" rather than the more usual "Status: install ok installed".

I've uploaded apache2 to tolerate the "triggers-awaited" and "triggers-
pending" states here. I expect this to clear these autopkgtest
failures.

[Bug 1379727] Re: FFe: openssh 6.7p1

2014-10-14 Thread Colin Watson
After discussion with Steve, I'm withdrawing this FFe request. It's
just too late for 14.10, and in particular it's too late for us to be
changing the default cipher and MAC lists; I think they're good changes,
but we should be discovering any new interoperability problems more than
a week out from release. I will very probably maintain a backport at
some point for 14.10 users wanting (in particular) the Unix socket
forwarding feature.

[Bug 1379727] [NEW] FFe: openssh 6.7p1

2014-10-10 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

I think it would be a good idea to upgrade utopic to OpenSSH 6.7p1,
which was released earlier this week. In particular, I'd like to have
the removal of unsafe ciphers and MACs from the default server
configuration and the support for Unix domain socket forwarding. I also
finally got round to running the upstream regression tests
automatically, which should be a useful improvement to our QA.

Here's the Debian changelog entry for the package I uploaded to unstable
yesterday. I included all the significant upstream release notes.

openssh (1:6.7p1-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release (http://www.openssh.com/txt/release-6.7):
- sshd(8): The default set of ciphers and MACs has been altered to
remove unsafe algorithms. In particular, CBC ciphers and arcfour* are
disabled by default. The full set of algorithms remains available if
configured explicitly via the Ciphers and MACs sshd_config options.
- ssh(1), sshd(8): Add support for Unix domain socket forwarding. A
remote TCP port may be forwarded to a local Unix domain socket and
vice versa or both ends may be a Unix domain socket (closes: #236718).
- ssh(1), ssh-keygen(1): Add support for SSHFP DNS records for ED25519
  key types.
- sftp(1): Allow resumption of interrupted uploads.
- ssh(1): When rekeying, skip file/DNS lookups of the hostkey if it is
the same as the one sent during initial key exchange.
- sshd(8): Allow explicit ::1 and 127.0.0.1 forwarding bind addresses
when GatewayPorts=no; allows client to choose address family.
- sshd(8): Add a sshd_config PermitUserRC option to control whether
  ~/.ssh/rc is executed, mirroring the no-user-rc authorized_keys
  option.
- ssh(1): Add a %C escape sequence for LocalCommand and ControlPath that
expands to a unique identifer based on a hash of the tuple of (local
host, remote user, hostname, port). Helps avoid exceeding miserly
pathname limits for Unix domain sockets in multiplexing control paths.
- sshd(8): Make the "Too many authentication failures" message include
the user, source address, port and protocol in a format similar to the
  authentication success / failure messages.
- Use CLOCK_BOOTTIME in preference to CLOCK_MONOTONIC when it is
available. It considers time spent suspended, thereby ensuring
timeouts (e.g. for expiring agent keys) fire correctly (closes:
  #734553).
- Use prctl() to prevent sftp-server from accessing
  /proc/self/{mem,maps}.
  * Restore TCP wrappers support, removed upstream in 6.7. It is true that
dropping this reduces preauth attack surface in sshd. On the other
hand, this support seems to be quite widely used, and abruptly dropping
it (from the perspective of users who don't read openssh-unix-dev) could
easily cause more serious problems in practice. It's not entirely clear
what the right long-term answer for Debian is, but it at least probably
doesn't involve dropping this feature shortly before a freeze.
  * Replace patch to disable OpenSSL version check with an updated version
of Kurt Roeckx's patch from #732940 to just avoid checking the status
field.
  * Build-depend on a new enough dpkg-dev for dpkg-buildflags, rather than
simply a new enough dpkg.
  * Simplify debian/rules using /usr/share/dpkg/buildflags.mk.
  * Use Package-Type rather than XC-Package-Type, now that it is an official
field.
  * Run a subset of the upstream regression test suite at package build
time, and the rest of it under autopkgtest.

[Bug 1366868] Re: kvm: dompmwakeup fails if domain becomes pmsuspended

2014-09-17 Thread Colin Watson
Hello Chris, or anyone else affected,

Accepted seabios into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seabios/1.7.4-4ubuntu0.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1350435] Re: tcg.c:1693: tcg fatal error

2014-08-05 Thread Colin Watson
Right, I can absolutely understand that. The question would I suppose
be whether you think this is a completely unreasonable thing to put in a
distro patch; I think SUSE are doing so for basically the same reason we
would be, that is, a setup such as PPAs where virtualisation isn't
available directly on the architecture in question but we can use qemu-
user to run foreign-arch binaries reasonably transparently. My
understanding is that this patch would make a pretty huge dent in our
failure rate for that setup.

Peter: While this is true, is it actually likely to happen? I thought
in our conversations in the past (when I previously attempted to
escalate this class of problems via Linaro) it had been fairly clear
that this was a very difficult task that isn't likely to be scheduled
for the foreseeable future.

[Bug 1297962] Re: [sru] Nova-compute doesnt start

2014-05-28 Thread Colin Watson
Hello Chuck, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nova into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nova/1:2014.1-0ubuntu1.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1324111] Re: please remove chkrootkit from main

2014-05-28 Thread Colin Watson
There's not much point filing this category of bug against a package
without subscribing the archive admins (done now). Uploaders have no
power to do this.

It would need to be unseeded, at which point it will show up for
movement to universe in component-mismatches. See:

  http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/germinate-
output/ubuntu.utopic/rdepends/ALL/chkrootkit
