[Bug 1527105] Re: Performance: drop HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS support
Hi Robie, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. If Xenial is only going to ship PHP7, then I'm happy to drop the patch entirely, as PHP7 already includes this change. If Xenial is shipping PHP5 and PHP7, I would be happy if the patch could be applied to PHP5 on Xenial. Either way, while a backport would be nice, I agree that it's difficult to justify it on the Stable guidelines, so I'm happy for this just to go to Xenial. [Bug 1527105] [NEW] Performance: drop HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS support
Public bug reported: Dropping HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS, which is only used by Apache 1, and is dropped in PHP7, leads to a 4-6% speedup on artificial benchmarks and a measurable speedup on real world applications. I have written a patch to do this and submitted it upstream: https://github.com/php/php-src/pull/1532 The PHP folk are a little hesitant to merge it in case there's anyone downstream who has a custom server API that still uses the hooks. Ubuntu doesn't ship Apache 1, nor does it have any custom server APIs, so it's safe to be merged, giving all your users a speed boost. All the details and the patch are in the upstream submission, and I'm happy to answer any other questions or get it into whatever format is most useful for you. ** Affects: php5 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1527105 Title: Performance: drop HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php5/+bug/1527105/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1527105] Re: Performance: drop HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS support
Hi, thanks for the quick response. I'm more than happy for this to wait for Xenial. I wasn't aware there was going to be a 5.7. The page for 5.7 on the PHP wiki suggests that it was a proposal that wasn't accepted: https://wiki.php.net/rfc/php57 If I'm wrong about this then I'm happy to work with upstream to get it into 5.7, but it looks like they want all changes to go into php7 instead. If you're referring to php7, then yes, this stuff does go away in PHP7. However, I think there will still be a lot of people on php5 for some time (think how long people stayed with php4!), so it'd be nice to have that perform better. I accept that there is risk associated with taking this patch. For two reasons, I think the risk is minimal. Firstly, I would be very surprised if people were compiling their custom server backends against Ubuntu's source tree: I'd expect they'd compile against mainline. Secondly, even if they compiled against Ubuntu, they would need to depend on HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS to experience an issue. Of all the server APIs ever bundled with PHP, only Apache1 ever provided these hooks. All of the (many!) other servers that PHP5 provided support for didn't use these hooks. If it were a 1 or 2% speed boost, I'd agree that it's not worth it. However, given that it's closer to 5%, I think it's worth the work to get it in. Thanks again, and I'm happy to address any further concerns you have. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1527105 Title: Performance: drop HANDLE_BLOCK_INTERRUPTIONS support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php5/+bug/1527105/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1527044] [NEW] Update mutex from file to pthread
Public bug reported: The default Mutex implementation used by Ubuntu's Apache package is file locking. (See /etc/apache2/apache2.conf) This is slower than pthreads, especially when using mpm_prefork. The Apache project currently warns about pthreads being potentially dangerous.[1] However, Linux has supported robust pthreads for many years now,[2] so it's safe for Ubuntu to move to pthreads and reap the performance benefits. My tests on POWER8, VM and bare-metal, PHP and static files, show something like a 1.5% to 3.5% performance gain for a one-line config change. I would like to update my BIND configuration from the command line, but I just get the error: /usr/bin/nsupdate -k /etc/bind/Kupdate_key.+157+10019.private > update add new.domain 300 A 1.2.3.4 > send ; TSIG error with server: expected a TSIG or SIG(0) update failed: NOTIMP The BIND log keeps empty upon this command. Does NOTIMP mean NOT IMPLEMENTED? I created a TSIG key with: dnssec-keygen -a HMAC-MD5 -b 512 -n HOST update_key I added these lines to named.conf.local: key dyndns { algorithm HMAC-MD5; secret "mysecret"; }; zone "subdomain.domain.com.zone" IN { type master; file "/etc/bind/subdomain.domain.com.zone"; allow-update { key dyndns; }; }; I extracted the string for mysecret from Kupdate_key.+157+10019.private. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04.3 (kernel 3.19.0-30-generic) and bind 9.9.5 (version 1:9.9.5.dfsg-3ubuntu0.5). Does anbody know, why this does not work? [Bug 1476662] Re: lxc-start symlink vulnerabilities may allow guest to read host filesystem, interfere with apparmor
We're getting lxc-start: utils.c: safe_mount: 1409 Mount of 'proc' onto '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc//proc' was onto a symlink! on all containers since we upgraded to 1.0.7-0ubuntu0.5 and they don't start. [Bug 1476662] Re: lxc-start symlink vulnerabilities may allow guest to read host filesystem, interfere with apparmor
The problem lies in the ubuntu patch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/lxc/lxc_1.0.7-0ubuntu0.5.debian.tar.gz where this code + size_t start = croot ? strlen(croot) : 0; + if (strcmp(ws + start, target + start) != 0) { + ERROR("Mount onto %s resulted in %s\n", target, ws); + goto out; + } in file 0003-CVE-2015-1335.patch checks if ws and start are the same. According to the given error (which I forgot to paste above), ws and target ARE different: lxc-start: utils.c: ensure_not_symlink: 1384 Mount onto /usr/lib/x86_64 -linux-gnu/lxc//proc resulted in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/proc So target is /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc//proc and ws is /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/proc Any hints how we could prevent the double slashing? Or would you just "clean up" the path somehow? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1476662 Title: lxc-start symlink vulnerabilities may allow guest to read host filesystem, interfere with apparmor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1476662/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1476662] Re: lxc-start symlink vulnerabilities may allow guest to read host filesystem, interfere with apparmor
@roman-fiedler Might point to the same, but we already have relative mount targets: lxc.mount.entry = proc /var/lib/our_containers/123/rootfs/proc proc nosuid, nodev, noexec 0 0 So that won't help as suggested in the mail.

[Bug 1462747] Re: Please sync with 1.4.24 Debian sid package
Can you please review which of our changes were already applied in Debian? Syncing would effectively mean dropping all our changes. Ubuntu currently has the following changes applied on top of Debian's 1.4.14: * SECURITY UPDATE: denial of service via large body length - debian/patches/CVE-2011-4971.patch: check length in memcached.c, added test to t/issue_192.t. - CVE-2011-4971 * SECURITY UPDATE: denial of service when using -vv - debian/patches/CVE-2013-0179.patch: properly format key in items.c, memcached.c. - CVE-2013-0179 * SECURITY UPDATE: SASL authentication bypass - debian/patches/CVE-2013-7239.patch: explicitly record sasl auth states in memcached.*, added test to t/binary-sasl.t. - CVE-2013-7239 * debian/memcached.postinst: don't create home directory so we don't end up with /nonexistent. Thanks to Dustin Lundquist for patch. (LP: #1255328) * Revert unnecessary deltas added to patches compared to Debian. * Revert use of dh-autoreconf and patch configure manually to match configure.ac, as this package despises modern autotools. * debian/rules: Fix the previous fixes a little harder, so they work. * debian/rules: Shuffle things around so that dh_autoreconf is always run before dh_quilt_patch. Fixes FTBFS with dpkg-buildpackage -B. * debian/control: added lsb-release, dh-autoreconf to build depends * debian/rules: run autoreconf * debian/patches/fix-distribution.patch: added patch to show distribution on version * Move dh_quilt_apply into configure step so that config.{sub, guess} patches get applied before running configure. (LP: #1218114) * Update config.{guess, sub} for Aarch64. * debian/tests: Add autopkgtest. * d/p/60_fix_racey_test.patch: Dropped, applied upstream. * d/p/start-memcached-fix-hash.patch: Change regex to make sure inline comments can function per feedback from upstream. Passing # to arguments now requires escaping with \. * d/p/start-memcached-fix-hash.patch: Apply patch to allow passing # as a value for memcached options such as -D to use # as a prefix delimiter for stats collection. (LP: #1005821) - Run as 'memcache' user instead of nobody. - Depend on adduser for preinst/postrm. - Create user in postinst. - d/rules: run test suite on build. - d/patches/50_fix_racey_test.patch: Cherry picked patch from upstream bug tracker which endeavours to avoid the race condition. Thanks to Clint Byrum for this fix. - d/patches/50_add_init_retry.patch: Dropped - superceeded by Debian patch. ** CVE added: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=2011-4971 ** CVE added: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi- bin/cvename.cgi?name=2013-0179 ** CVE added: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi- bin/cvename.cgi?name=2013-7239 ** Changed in: memcached (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to memcached in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1462747 Title: Please sync with 1.4.24 Debian sid package To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/memcached/+bug/1462747/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1458434] [NEW] Use __builtin_clzl on POWER
Public bug reported: Zend/zend_alloc.c uses __builtin_clzl in zend_mm_high_bit and zend_mm_low_but, but only if (defined(__arm__) || defined(__aarch64__)). This is overly restrictive: it's also usable if __defined__(__powerpc__). This causes a bump to speed on POWER systems: previously zend_mm_high_bit shows up on perf reports, with this patch the functions drop out of the profile entirely. This bug has also been reported upstream (https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=69703), but I've sent you this report, along with a `dpkg-source --commit` style patch, in the hopes that you'll pick it up, so that Ubuntu users get the performance improvement sooner. [Bug 1455818] Re: mysql-server-5.6.postrm fails when /usr/share/mysql-common/configure-symlinks doesn't exist
Guys, I found a way to install Mysql Server 5.6: Select all mysql server packages on synaptic for install and proceed with the install. It will fail to configure Mysql-Server-5.6, so then you have to do the following: Open post installation script on /var/lib/dpkg/info/mysql-server-5.6.postinst and comment out line 95: ### /usr/share/mysql-common/configure-symlinks install mysql $mysql_cfgdir/mysql.cnf then run: sudo apt-get install mysql-common that's it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1455818 Title: mysql-server-5.6.postrm fails when /usr/share/mysql-common/configure- symlinks doesn't exist To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.6/+bug/1455818/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1447916] Re: iscsitarget-dkms 1.4.20.3+svn499-0ubuntu2: iscsitarget kernel module failed to build
The bug is relatively simple to be solved (at least, it worked for me). 1 - apt-get install iscsitarget iscsitarget-dkms 2 - You will get an error compiling the DKMS module. That's OK. 3 - go to the folder /usr/src/iscsitarget-1.4.20.3+svn499/kernel and edit the file block-io.c 4 - go to line #90, and change this: bio-bi_sector = ppos 9; to this: bio-bi_iter.bi_sector = ppos 9; 5 - save and close the file. 6 - dpkg-reconfigure iscsitarget-dkms 7 - it should be working by now. I've tested the module on 14.04.2 LTS, with somewhat big loads (~30Gb of transfer) and it worked pretty well. [Bug 1441388] [NEW] numactl crashes with segfault
Public bug reported: numactl sometimes crashes when enumerating hardware: root@node1:~# numactl --hardware available: 648 nodes (0-647) Segmentation fault Further analysis shows that libnuma is using an uninitialised pointer, which value depends on program layout. When layout is sufficiently different, the pointer is non-NULL and the library parses the data pointed to as a bitmap, crashing. Therefore, it is possible to leverage this in an exploit. I have fixed the issue upstream: https://github.com/numactl/numactl/commit/6a7c2cf3f00e32082a1ada300cc585740e2b4bbd ** Affects: numactl (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Information type changed from Private Security to Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to numactl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1441388 Title: numactl crashes with segfault To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/numactl/+bug/1441388/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1441388] Re: numactl crashes with segfault
A CVE hasn't been assigned. Presumably an attacker could manipulate the environment before an application's libnuma call to have the uninitialised pointer point to information in memory they'd like to extract, or cause a denial. If an application that gained privileges (capabilities, setuid etc) uses libnuma, this may allow access to move privileged data. That said, probably it would only be libvirt: $ apt-cache rdepends libnuma1 libnuma1 Reverse Depends: libvirt0 libvirt-bin libhwloc5 libvirt0 libvirt-bin libnuma1:i386 libnuma1:i386 crafty rt-tests procenv numactl libhwloc5 libvirt0 libvirt-bin libnuma-dev libnuma-dbg irqbalance -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to numactl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1441388 Title: numactl crashes with segfault To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/numactl/+bug/1441388/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
