[Bug 1273462] Re: Users can mistakenly run init.d scripts and cause problems if an equivalent upstart job already exists
Both mysql-server-5.5 and mysql-server-5.6 packages (e.g. under Trusty Thar) provide a sysvinit script and an upstart job for mysql. The problem here is that the maintainer has a very strange approach: 1. The sysvinit script links are symply removed in the postinstall script using update-rc.d 2.The sysvinit script doesn't respects Debian policy section 9.11.1 which states that the sysvinit scripts should abort when an upstart job is provided (As I know, Ubuntu has choosen to follow Debian policy regarding cooexistence of upstart jobs and sysvinit scripts) So yes, this situation can lead to several problems. Anybody that run the mysql sysvinit script directly (/etc/init.d/mysql) instead of using service mysql will have problems. Also, if the upstart job is present, and if the sysvninit script is enabled (sysvinit script links created), the mysql socket will be missing on reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1273462 Title: Users can mistakenly run init.d scripts and cause problems if an equivalent upstart job already exists To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lsb/+bug/1273462/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1447142] Re: systemd: ntpdate is started too soon (before the network)
> Can you explain why this is actually a problem please? I guess that Ubuntu systems with ntp installed would boot a little faster if ntp was not doing useless work by getting started before the network is fully up. > Won't timesyncd suffice on a desktop that uses NetworkManager now? Perhaps, but timesyncd is not activated by default. I had to type this command to activate it: # timedatectl set-ntp true While timesyncd is probably a fine alternative to ntp, this is a bug in ntp and Ubuntu would be a better system with this bug fixed (or ntp removed and timesyncd activated by default). > Is the time on your system actually falling out of sync, or is the problem > just the noise of the error message? [Bug 456806] Re: mountall vomits a shell onto virtual console when you run vi
Demonize code: /* Become daemon */ if (daemonise) { pid_t pid; /* Fork once because Upstart makes us a session leader, * or we may be a session leader of an existing process * group. */ pid = fork (); if (pid 0) { nih_fatal (%s: %s, _(Unable to become daemon), strerror (errno)); exit (EXIT_ERROR); } else if (pid 0) { exit (0); } /* Create a new session */ setsid (); /* Fork again so that we're not the leader of that session */ pid = fork (); if (pid 0) { nih_fatal (%s: %s, _(Unable to become daemon), strerror (errno)); exit (EXIT_ERROR); } else if (pid 0) { exit (0); } /* Usual daemon cleanups */ if (chdir (/)) ; umask (0); /* Send all logging output to syslog */ //openlog (program_name, LOG_PID, LOG_DAEMON); //nih_log_set_logger (nih_logger_syslog); nih_signal_set_ignore (SIGHUP); } The standard input file descriptor isn't closed so mountall is still using the terminal after the daemon is started. The daemon is thus reading input from the terminal and modifying its settings concurrently with whatever process is using the terminal after the launch of mountall. On my system running 'mountall --daemon' manually will hang the shell roughly 50% of the time. The race condition is highly environment-dependent. Running with strace -f won't trigger the problem, for example. In my opinion the behavior of mountall --daemon is broken.
