[Bug 1273462] Re: Users can mistakenly run init.d scripts and cause problems if an equivalent upstart job already exists

2016-03-04 Thread Laurent Declercq
Both mysql-server-5.5 and mysql-server-5.6 packages (e.g. under Trusty
Thar) provide a sysvinit script and an upstart job for mysql. The
problem here is that the maintainer has a very strange approach:

1. The sysvinit script links are symply removed in the postinstall script using
update-rc.d
2.The sysvinit script doesn't respects Debian policy section 9.11.1 which
states that the sysvinit scripts should abort when an upstart job is provided
(As I know, Ubuntu has choosen to follow Debian policy regarding cooexistence
of upstart jobs and sysvinit scripts)

So yes, this situation can lead to several problems.

Anybody that run the mysql sysvinit script directly (/etc/init.d/mysql)
instead of using service mysql will have problems.

Also, if the upstart job is present, and if the sysvninit script is
enabled (sysvinit script links created), the mysql socket will be
missing on reboot.

[Bug 1447142] Re: systemd: ntpdate is started too soon (before the network)

2015-10-07 Thread Laurent Bonnaud
> Can you explain why this is actually a problem please?

I guess that Ubuntu systems with ntp installed would boot a little
faster if ntp was not doing useless work by getting started before the
network is fully up.

> Won't timesyncd suffice on a desktop that uses NetworkManager now?

Perhaps, but timesyncd is not activated by default. I had to type this
command to activate it:

# timedatectl set-ntp true

While timesyncd is probably a fine alternative to ntp, this is a bug in
ntp and Ubuntu would be a better system with this bug fixed (or ntp
removed and timesyncd activated by default).

> Is the time on your system actually falling out of sync, or is the problem
> just the noise of
the error message?

Time is fine on my system, but the noise of the error messages is a
problem in itself.

[Bug 1115335] Re: hg displays errors in pre-commit.d/20warn-problem-files

2014-04-04 Thread Laurent Voisin
I've spent two hours this morning chasing this bug.

The cause that triggered the bug was that the /etc repository had been
cloned by a sysadmin to another directory in the same filesystem.
Therefore, to save space, Mercurial had made hardlinks on almost all the
files in the repository thus triggering a line

  abort: path contains illegal component

for each file in the Mercurial repository.

The last patch seems perfect to me.

It would be really nice to have 5.4 in this LTS.

5.4 bring significant performances (10 to 20%) and memory usage
enhancements (up to 43% less memory usage) .

[Bug 948115] [NEW] Detect if system is running upstart seems wrong

2012-03-06 Thread Laurent Bigonville
Public bug reported:

Hi,

The postinstall script supposed to detect if the system is running
upstart or not with the following code:

if [ -f /etc/init/mcollective.conf ]; then
sed -i s@^daemonize.*@daemonize = 0@ $MCOLLECTIVE_SERVER_CFG
fi

This seems wrong to me as an upstart job description could be installed
even if the system by itself is not running upstart and the user could
switch to an other init system without re-runnung the pkg configure

[Bug 839509] Re: nut can not log to syslog when shutdown

2011-09-14 Thread Laurent Bigonville
 by the time we reach the end of the shutdown process, FS are remounted
 read-only.
 so even if syslogd was still active, it would not be able to log in the FS
 syslog file!

Some could argue that syslog can be configured to send logs to a central
server over the network /devil_advocate

I've found the issue.

Actually the nut_check_*.m4 are setting *_LDFLAGS instead of *_LIBS, and
due to a toolchain change this become visible (gcc -o testusb testusb.c
-lusb is working but gcc -o testusb -lusb testusb.c is not working
anymore)

Any reason nut is not using PKG_CHECK_MODULE macro?

[Bug 640588] [NEW] package winbind 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-09-16 Thread Laurent Schwarzenberger
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 639768 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/639768

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I'm not sure what happened here. I did an upgrade and something in samba
errored. The terminal froze and I restarted it. I was then told that I
couldn't get a lock on apt/dpkg.

I ran these:
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f

It allowed some of the updates to finish, but not all. Samba, winbind
and man db (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/man-
db/+bug/640584) are all having problems and created apport crashes.
There were also various messages about dependencies being 1 ubuntu
version behind what was required, the debian versions were the same (eg.
packagex.x.x-xubuntu1 and packagex.x.xubuntu2)

My dpkg is currently broken and I don't know why. I can not run dpkg at
all now. I get this message.

dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0018' near line 0:
 newline in field name `#padding'

Running that in google gives me error reports from debian mailing lists
regarding bugs involving a lack of freespace. My system has 4.8GB free
and the bug concerned was fixed 2 years ago.

I am running a system from upgraded lucid, not a fresh install.

[Bug 456806] Re: mountall vomits a shell onto virtual console when you run vi

2010-01-04 Thread Laurent Birtz
Demonize code:

/* Become daemon */
if (daemonise) {
pid_t pid;

/* Fork once because Upstart makes us a session leader,
 * or we may be a session leader of an existing process
 * group.
 */
pid = fork ();
if (pid  0) {
nih_fatal (%s: %s, _(Unable to become daemon),
   strerror (errno));

exit (EXIT_ERROR);
} else if (pid  0) {
exit (0);
}

/* Create a new session */
setsid ();

/* Fork again so that we're not the leader of that session */
pid = fork ();
if (pid  0) {
nih_fatal (%s: %s, _(Unable to become daemon),
   strerror (errno));

exit (EXIT_ERROR);
} else if (pid  0) {
exit (0);
}

/* Usual daemon cleanups */
if (chdir (/))
;
umask (0);

/* Send all logging output to syslog */
//openlog (program_name, LOG_PID, LOG_DAEMON);
//nih_log_set_logger (nih_logger_syslog);

nih_signal_set_ignore (SIGHUP);
}

The standard input file descriptor isn't closed so mountall is still
using the terminal after the daemon is started. The daemon is thus
reading input from the terminal and modifying its settings concurrently
with whatever process is using the terminal after the launch of mountall.

On my system running 'mountall --daemon' manually will hang the shell
roughly 50% of the time. The race condition is highly
environment-dependent. Running with strace -f won't trigger the problem,
for example.

In my opinion the behavior of mountall --daemon is broken.

This bug is still present in mountall-2.1.

Binary package hint: libldap-2.4-2

Switching to gnutls for openldap in Hardy introduced a regression by
breaking the TLS_CACERTDIR option in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. Unlike
openssl, gnutls doesn't certficate directories natively.Upgrading a
secured openldap setup using TLS_CACERTDIR from Gutsy to Hardy breaks
connections to the openldap server.

[Bug 242325] [NEW] Samba with ldap passwd sync = only fails to change passwords

2008-06-23 Thread Laurent Pinchart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

samba:
  Installed: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.2
  Candidate: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.2
  Version table:
 *** 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.2 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

Samba configured with an ldap backend and 'ldap passwd sync' set to
'only' silently fails to change user passwords.

When a samba client requests a password change, samba returns a success
return code but doesn't try to change the password. The bug has been
reported to the Samba team
(https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4901) and fixed upstream
(http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=samba.git;a=commit;h=1dd8fa9a521046f1de8173ac00224706c5249665).

Can the patch be backported to Ubuntu Hardy ?

[Bug 235625] [NEW] CIFS: broken support of symlinks

2008-05-28 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

Hello,

I have a samba share on my server witch contains a symlink to an other
folder of the server. I can open that symlink like a normal folder using
Windows or Nautilus (smb://)

When mounting that share using fstab and cifs I cannot browse symlinks
in that share.

Here is my fstab line:

//server/share/media/Network/server/share   cifs
user=user,password=pass,uid=1000,gid=1000,file_mode=0640,dir_mode=0750,rw,exec,auto,iocharset=utf8
