[Bug 1556967] Re: Support 'multipath -a'

[Bug 1555345] Re: ISST-LTE: pVM:multipath -ll cannot show mpath device
The milestone for this is indeed still 16.04; but we might use a different way to get the fix than applying the patch. We have Ryan here working on merging multipath-tools (a git snapshot that should contain the fix and many others) from Debian; once that is completed and lands in the release we'll revisit this bug, make sure whether it is fixed or if it still needs to have the patch applied on top. Or, if we end up in the case that we can't land the larger update, we'll land just this patch. In any case, this means we'll delay fixing this here bug for now until the situation with the merge is completed -- that is tracked in bug 1551952. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1555345 Title: ISST-LTE: pVM:multipath -ll cannot show mpath device To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1555345/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1551828] Re: kpartx causes kernel oops when NVMe devices is not in blacklist
** Description changed: + [Impact] + Users expecting to use multipath over NVMe device will notice hangs with any software attempting to use the device-mapper devices (/dev/dm-* or /dev/mapper/mpath*). + + [Test case] + 1) Setup multipath over nvme. (should not be possible with the patch in) + 2) Run kpartx -av /dev/dm-device-mulipath-over-nvme (will hang without the patch) + + [Regression Potential] + Minimal. This removes a theoretically valid use case of multipath devices using NVMe disks, which is not technically supported and leads to software hangs (and thus installs will not complete, and setting up multipath over NVMe post-install would hang). + This only affects nvme devices; so any storage device using the "nvme" naming would no longer be able to setup multipath even if technical specifications were to change sufficiently to support multipath over NVMe (or if some other device starts using this naming which isn't affected by the same limitations). + + + - + When on bare metal uses NVMe devices - kpartx cause kernel oops. http://paste.openstack.org/show/488638/ Also any tools which works with disks (e.g. fdisk, lsblk) hangs in D state (uninterruptible sleep) while trying to to read /dev/dm-X. [Bug 1543430] Re: kpartx 0.5.0-7ubuntu11 fails to remove loop mapping on kpartx -d
Ugh, yeah, I see now that the patch fixing dealing with loopbacks at all "regresses" in a way, but not dealing correctly with the loop entries even though it appears to deal with the devmapper table just fine. I'm looking at it right now, it's not pretty. There are basically two ways I can think of to deal with this. Either relying more on loopdev/device than S_ISREG on the buf that describes the file opened (we needed to stat the loopback device after picking it, otherwise no major/minor numbers to do the partition mappings), or hacking buf.st_mode to convince kpartx we're still dealing with a regular file. I'm trying to see what might break if we just use loopdev or device everywhere. I will upload as soon as I'm reasonably confident this does not further break things, and I'll adjust the autopkgtest accordingly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1543430 Title: kpartx 0.5.0-7ubuntu11 fails to remove loop mapping on kpartx -d To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1543430/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

The best option then is to look at the driver, if it permits some control of how the scans happen, and if not, why. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1526984 Title: ISST-LTE: root mpath device unavailable after installation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1526984/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1526984] Re: ISST-LTE: root mpath device unavailable after installation
Hum, that's kind of weird. You should see disks being picked up by multipath if they should, even if they are detected *after* multipath scripts run (because multipathd...). They wouldn't be detected before multipath runs, because then they would most likely be remapped anyway (unless something else claims them). Could you file a new bug for this, including the output of multipath -v4 taken from the initramfs? You may stop the boot process by adding "break =pre-multipath" to break boot just before the multipath scripts. At that point, you'll need to modprobe dm_multipath; and then you should be able to run multipath -v4. If you exit from there boot should complete (hopefully succesfully, since there will have been some extra delay).
[Bug 1538775] Re: multipath-tools-boot relies on scsi_wait_scan module, fails multipath setup
Stuart, I'm aware of that, but there are two different issues at play here: the detection and scanning of drives, and the fact that scsi_wait_scan is still in the script. The upload should likely fix both; but I'm closing this bug here because it's about scsi_wait_scan. ** Description changed: + [Impact] + This affects users of multipath systems where devices may be slow to be detected. [Bug 1432062] Re: multipath-tools-boot: support booting without user_friendly_names on devices with spaces in identifiers
** Description changed: + [Impact] If a system is not installed w/ multipath support (i.e., no disk-detect/multipath/enable=true), the /etc/multipath.conf file is not installed. If an user later installs multipath-tools-boot, it will enable the udev rules for multipath support. Those rules don't handle disk devices w/ spaces on their names/uuids/models very well.. That's because of udev's SYMLINK command using spaces to separate multiple links, and the kernel sysfs/dm informing \x20 instead, which is not correctly interpreted by some commands, resulting in file not found errors, for example. Thus, the system fails to boot. + + [Test case] + Requires installing on a system where there are spaces in the name of the device make/model data; for instance, on POWER8 with IPR disks, or with QEMU. + 1) Install system with multipath support ('disk-detect/multipath/enable=true'). + 2) Boot the system. + 3) Edit /etc/multipath.conf, remove "user_friendly_names yes" ; replace with "user_friendly_names no", or remove /etc/multipath.conf. + 4) Update the initramfs: sudo update-initramfs -u + 5) Reboot. + + [Regression potential] + Minimal. Systems with names in the disk make/model data would not boot without user_friendly_names enabled. This patch will allow multipath-tools to correctly handle these devices in the case where friendly names are not enabled by using the devices major/minor numbers rather that its path. + + There's no problem, however, if user_friendly_names is enabled in multipath.conf (which is enabled in the default multipath.conf from the installer, if it has multipath enabled). Notice it's an acceptable case to install w/out multipath support, and enable it later for booting. Disk devices w/ spaces in naming is not common over SAN/storage systems, but that happens often for conventional disks; for example: - IBM IPR ( IBM IPR-0 5DB6F480 ) - IBM VDASD ( AIX VDASD 00c96f074c00014bb8e713f0.14 ) - QEMU HARDDISK ( QEMU QEMU HARDDISK ) So, please, is it possible to ship the default multipath.conf (e.g., from installer) w/ multipath-tools-boot? For users not to their systems failing to boot after installing multipath-tools-boot manually, after a non-multipath install. After examining /usr/share /initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/multipath I found the following: verbose && log_begin_msg "Waiting for scsi storage" { rmmod scsi_wait_scan ; modprobe scsi_wait_scan ; rmmod scsi_wait_scan ; } >/dev/null 2>&1 verbose && log_end_msg The problem appears to be that the scsi_wait_scan module doesn't exist and so there is no wait before the multipath scan is performed. I managed to observe this briefly during bootup (with the script edited) and could see it performed the scan before sda/sdb was discovered. I also found a debian bug report indicating the module was removed a while back (https://lists.debian.org/debian- kernel/2012/05/msg00791.html). After adding in an artificial delay for testing the multipath command does what is expected and configures the paths accordingly. I'm not sure what the correct approach is if the scsi_wait_scan module is removed. I also found that the same local-top script doesnt have the dm-round- robin module loaded (but it is included in the initrd by the associated hook script), however I'm not sure if that is by design. I know I need it for my specific use-case, but don't know if it is deliberately excluded to prevent breakage on SAN units that don't support native round-robin. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1538775 Title: multipath-tools-boot relies on scsi_wait_scan module, fails multipath setup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1538775/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

And now that I did some more testing with Louis on this, we were able to "run into" a crash with mpp->alias attempted to be freed but failing, which isn't quite the same backtrace as I had pasted earlier. The crash you're hitting is something very different than what valgrind is finding (though I agree technically valgrind is correct in pointing this out, and it looks as though some of it is addressed upstream). ** Description changed: - The current ipmitool code can fail to find an IPMI device on my - OpenPower machine, due to bug in the USB SCSI device discovery process. + [Impact] + The current ipmitool code can fail to find an IPMI device on my OpenPower machine, due to bug in the USB SCSI device discovery process. This will only happen if the user has adjusted the number of virtual USB devices that the BMC exports. However, the failure mode isn't obvious, and it prevents the user from using the 'USB' IPMI channel, which is required for firmware upgrades. This is fixed in upstream commit 607cfe6f4, can we backport this to the Ubuntu ipmitool for versions at 1.8.15 or earlier? + + [Test case] + 1- Increase number of virtual USB devices exported by BMC + 2- Run ipmitool -I usb lan print + + [Regression Potential] + Low potential for regression. This increases the number of devices allowed for SCSI; since following spec there may be up to 16 devices on a bus. This might cause issues still for out of spec systems with more devices on the bus, or buggy BIOS incorrectly cleaning up memory for devices that are not present (ie. non-zeroed memory that could make ipmi think there is a device when there is not). ** Changed in: ipmitool (Ubuntu Vivid) Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: ipmitool (Ubuntu Wily) Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: ipmitool (Ubuntu Vivid) Assignee: (unassigned) => Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre (mathieu-tl) ** Changed in: ipmitool (Ubuntu Wily) Assignee: (unassigned) => Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre (mathieu-tl) ** Changed in: ipmitool (Ubuntu Trusty) Assignee: (unassigned) => Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre (mathieu-tl) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ipmitool in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1509896 Title: IPMI USB SCSI endpoint discovery can fail on OpenPower machines To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ipmitool/+bug/1509896/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

** Description changed: + [Impact] + Users of multipath will see incomplete output for the vendor and model values for devices where the first path is the path that is failed. + + [Test Cases] + 1) Experience a failed path: + echo 1 > /sys/devices//delete + (the above is an example for forcibly removing a path for SCSI via the /sys filesystem) + 2) run: sudo multipath -ll + 3) Verify the output, see below. + + Storage name (vendor and model usually) should always be displayed after + dm-* on the header line for a multipath device. + + [Regression Potential] + This is limited to output and is thus purely a cosmetic fix. Possible issues leading from that fix would include crashes due to an incorrect patch or the output for vendor/model info for the device to still be incorrect. + + == Comment: #0 - Yueh Chyong Jackson - 2015-01-27 16:54:58 == ---Problem Description--- power kvm client ubuntu ilp1fc85apA4 after error injection test (SVC node reboot), the multipath output show one path with #:#:#:# and did not show the storage name: mpath6 (3600507680284066f18000172) dm-6 , <-(missing storage name) size=3.0G features='1 queue_if_no_path' hwhandler='0' wp=rw |-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=50 status=active | |- #:#:#:# -#:#failed faulty running < | `- 4:0:7:0 sdbr 68:80 active ready running `-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=10 status=enabled - |- 4:0:9:0 sdbq 68:64 active ready running - `- 3:0:7:0 sdby 68:192 active ready running + |- 4:0:9:0 sdbq 68:64 active ready running + `- 3:0:7:0 sdby 68:192 active ready running this is a storage IBM svc storage + ---uname output--- + power kvm server: [root@ilp1fc85a ~]# uname -a Linux ilp1fc85a.tuc.stglabs.ibm.com 3.10.42-2018.1.pkvm2_1_1.46.ppc64 #1 SMP Fri Oct 17 10:41:35 CDT 2014 ppc64 ppc64 ppc64 GNU/Linux, + client uname : root@ilp1fc85apA4:~# uname -a Linux ilp1fc85apA4.tuc.stglabs.ibm.com 3.13.0-24-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 10 19:09:21 UTC 2014 ppc64le ppc64le ppc64le GNU/Linux - - ---uname output--- - power kvm server: [root@ilp1fc85a ~]# uname -a Linux ilp1fc85a.tuc.stglabs.ibm.com 3.10.42-2018.1.pkvm2_1_1.46.ppc64 #1 SMP Fri Oct 17 10:41:35 CDT 2014 ppc64 ppc64 ppc64 GNU/Linux, - client uname : root@ilp1fc85apA4:~# uname -a Linux ilp1fc85apA4.tuc.stglabs.ibm.com 3.13.0-24-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 10 19:09:21 UTC 2014 ppc64le ppc64le ppc64le GNU/Linux - ---Additional Hardware Info--- 4 adapters, coho, bluefin, houston, houston FCoE, with following storages: DS8800,TMS, xiv gen2, svc V7k ,texan, texan FCoE, client lun that use for running tests(data lun) are passthrough access to machines: power kvm server: ilp1fc85a 9.11.56.126 (ssh root/B!gm0ney) client: ilp1fc85apA4 9.11.56.72 (ssh root/B!gmoney) - the logs are save at: + the logs are save at: ip: 9.11.56.167(root/teamw0rk), under file: /root/bflocal/CYCLE18/CheckHostStatus_V2/CYCLE18_226/scripts/9.11.56.72.hostcheck.CHS.svc_nr.stop.20150127073959 ip: 9.11.56.168 (root/teamw0rk), under file: /PACKAGE/errlogs/Cycle18/SVC_NR/20150127081651/ c_85_g.ilp1fc85apA4.SVC_NR.Cycle18.27Jan15.081758.tar.gz - - - Machine Type = IBM Power System S824, product: 8286-42A,serial: 10CD74T - + Machine Type = IBM Power System S824, product: 8286-42A,serial: 10CD74T + ---Debugger--- A debugger is not configured - - Contact Information = ida jackson/i...@us.ibm.com, cwc...@us.ibm.com - + + Contact Information = ida jackson/i...@us.ibm.com, cwc...@us.ibm.com + Stack trace output: - no - + no + Oops output: - no - + no + System Dump Info: - The system is not configured to capture a system dump. - - *Additional Instructions for ida jackson/i...@us.ibm.com, cwc...@us.ibm.com: + The system is not configured to capture a system dump. + + *Additional Instructions for ida jackson/i...@us.ibm.com, cwc...@us.ibm.com: -Post a private note with access information to the mach - ine that the bug is occuring on. + ine that the bug is occuring on. -Attach sysctl -a output output to the bug. please let me know if other info is needed. thanks for looking into the problem == Comment: #9 - Vaishnavi Bhat - 2015-02-11 04:11:40 == - == Comment: #17 - Andrea M. [Bug 1503305] Re: iLab: power kvm client after svc node reboot error inject test, multipath output show missing path and missing storage name
I'm ready to apply the patch, but doing this on 14.04 right now would likely mean further delays for another stable update in progress. I'd rather wait until that update is done and fully verified (waiting for a confirmation from mauricfo) before adding a new patch to go through the SRU process. I can however apply this now to the devel release and to 15.04 and 15.10. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503305 Title: iLab: power kvm client after svc node reboot error inject test, multipath output show missing path and missing storage name To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1503305/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Mauricio, Have you managed to test this successfully? I was able to build a vm and test this, but I'm not certain whether the behavior, although it looks correct in detecting the path changes, it indeed correct. [Bug 1473903] Re: parted will generate two devices when adding one partition on mpath device
Don't both device names actually work fine though? I couldn't find any blocking issue to leaving both in place, since they don't seem to interfere with any operation of the system. This would certainly constitute the least-intrusive change, on account that there would be no change required. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be a straightforward way to fix this. We basically have two not great options to contend with (unless someone else can think of another): 1) Patch parted to write -part partitions instead of -p. This is fine for the installed system, but means we'd need to revert SRUs already done for multipath-tools in the installer -- where we expect to see -p partitions always, and rewrite them to -part at the end (since there will be just kpartx on the installed system), modify partman-multipath to pick up all partitions and make them -part. There remains the issue of rewriting fstab later on, when comes the time to migrate to multipath 0.5.0 (which changes the partition names in other ways too, so unavoidable). 2) Fix kpartx rules either by disabling them or making them use -p only. This would fix the installed system (since parted creates p partitions itself) and detected partitions on drives at boot would show up correctly, but we'd need to do other SRU changes to installer bits to not rewrite /etc/fstab to use -part as a partition separator. This is apparently a simpler change, but means we also need to deal with changing fstab on upgrade for those who use -part, which makes it dangerous and very intrusive. I'd love to get some guidance on this, but I'm thinking not changing anything for now is the best option; although if there is any effect in having both devices show up and we need to stop it, then 1) would be best. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1473903 Title: parted will generate two devices when adding one partition on mpath device To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1473903/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1492262] Re: maas-enlist-udeb fails enlistment because of missing curl
As you can see, the curl package is installed; but as logs show the binary is not available. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot_server-install_2015-09-04_09:12:24.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas-enlist/+bug/1492262/+attachment/4457280/+files/Screenshot_server-install_2015-09-04_09%3A12%3A24.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to maas-enlist in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1492262 Title: maas-enlist-udeb fails enlistment because of missing curl To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas-enlist/+bug/1492262/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1492262] [NEW] maas-enlist-udeb fails enlistment because of missing curl
Public bug reported: Looks like maas-enlist-udeb (the maas-enlist function for d-i, which gets run when one selects the ubuntu-server ISO menu option "Multiple server install using MAAS", has been failing at least since Trusty. Attached are screenshots and logs for attempting a provisioning via MAAS, but the enlist step fails: curl is not found, even though the curl-udeb package is installed. The system would normally silently fail to enlist and logs be somewhat hard to get since maas-enlist-udeb.postinst forces a shutdown at its end, regardless of the result of running /usr/bin/maas-enlist. The postinst file was modified to remove the shutdown in order to get the logs.
