Hi, it seems you were initially installing mysql but it was not properly or
fully configured, so you need to run dpkg --configure -a and then aptitude
-f install or apt-get -f install depending on the installer you used to

[Bug 676094] [NEW] Missing pid file check in tomcat6 init script causes failed startup

2010-11-16 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

The tomcat6 init script does not pass the --pid-file argument to start-
stop-daemon when it launches tomcat. This causes start-stop-daemon to
look for processes with matching names, uids and gids when trying to
determine if tomcat is already running. Due to the way the tomcat6 init
script is written, this means that tomcat will not start if an existing
instance of /bin/bash is running with the same user and group as that
which tomcat runs as.

The offending lines are in 148-154 of /etc/init.d/tomcat6:
  # Run the catalina.sh script as a daemon
  set +e
  touch "$CATALINA_PID" "$CATALINA_BASE"/logs/catalina.out
  chown $TOMCAT6_USER "$CATALINA_PID" "$CATALINA_BASE"/logs/catalina.out
  start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \
  -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \
  -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH"

$TOMCAT_SH causes catalina.sh to be run, which maintains the pid file.
However, start-stop-daemon is unaware of this pid file. Other uses of
start-stop-daemon in the init script pass the --pid-file option. Can it
just be added to this one?

[Bug 557300] [NEW] tomcat6 package changes ownership of directories

2010-04-07 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

I run tomcat6 on Ubuntu 8.10, installed from the tomcat6 package. I
need to run tomcat as a different user to 'tomcat6' so have configured
this via the TOMCAT6_USER variable in /etc/default/tomcat6. I then
manually changed the ownership of tomcat's various directories for this
to work. This has been fine for over a year and has survived updates to
the tomcat6 package. However, this morning I upgraded to
6.0.18-0ubuntu3.3 and afterwards found that tomcat no longer ran. After
investigation, I found that the upgrade had chowned and chgrped tomcat's
directories to the tomcat6 user/group. This left tomcat unable to run
as it couldn't read or write key directories.

Looking at the tomcat6 package, this happens in the postinst script,
during the configure stage. The same also happens in the current
tomcat6 package in Ubuntu 10.04. I would suggest that these
chowns/chgrps either be removed, or that they are made aware of the user
that tomcat runs as. Could this be done by passing options through
debconf?

[Bug 557300] Re: tomcat6 package changes ownership of directories

2010-04-08 Thread Max
I've just added the following stat overrides on a system that had not
yet upgraded to the latest tomcat6 package:

dpkg-statoverride --add cms cms 750 /var/log/tomcat6/
dpkg-statoverride --add cms cms 755 /var/lib/tomcat6/temp/
dpkg-statoverride --add cms cms 750 /var/cache/tomcat6
dpkg-statoverride --add root cms 775 /etc/tomcat6/Catalina
dpkg-statoverride --add root cms 775 /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost
dpkg-statoverride --add root cms 775 /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps

I then ran a dist-upgrade. After the upgrade, the directories listed
above had all had their user and or group changed as follows:

r...@host:/var/lib/tomcat6# ls -ld /var/log/tomcat6/
drwxr-x--- 2 tomcat6 adm 4096 2010-04-08 09:47 /var/log/tomcat6/
r...@host:/var/lib/tomcat6# ls -ld /var/lib/tomcat6/temp/
drwxr-xr-x 2 tomcat6 cms 4096 2009-12-21 15:11 /var/lib/tomcat6/temp/
r...@host:/var/lib/tomcat6# ls -ld /var/cache/tomcat6
drwxr-x--- 2 tomcat6 adm 4096 2010-04-08 10:37 /var/cache/tomcat6
r...@host:/var/lib/tomcat6# ls -ld /etc/tomcat6/Catalina
drwxrwxr-x 3 root tomcat6 4096 2009-10-12 09:27 /etc/tomcat6/Catalina
r...@host:/var/lib/tomcat6# ls -ld /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost
drwxrwxr-x 2 root tomcat6 4096 2010-04-08 10:37 /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost
r...@host:/var/lib/tomcat6# ls -ld /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps
drwxrwxr-x 4 root tomcat6 4096 2009-12-18 09:36 /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps

Before the upgrade, the permissions and ownership of the directories
matched those specified in the statoverrides.

The postinst scripts for tomcat6_6.0.18-0ubuntu3.3_all.deb and
tomcat6_6.0.24-2ubuntu1_all.deb both contain chowns and chmods like the
following (from 6.0.18):

chown -R tomcat6:adm /var/log/tomcat6 /var/cache/tomcat6
chmod 750 /var/log/tomcat6 /var/cache/tomcat6
chgrp tomcat6 /etc/tomcat6/tomcat-users.xml
chmod 640 /etc/tomcat6/tomcat-users.xml
chown tomcat6 /var/lib/tomcat6/temp
chgrp tomcat6 /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps
chmod 775 /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps
chgrp tomcat6 /etc/tomcat6/Catalina /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost
chmod 775 /etc/tomcat6/Catalina /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost

I don't know much about dpkg, but these certainly seem to be hardcoded
to the tomcat6 and adm groups.

[Bug 557300] Re: tomcat6 package should respect dpkg-statoverride (support running as a different user)

2010-04-09 Thread Max
Looking at the version of the tomcat6 package in 10.04, there are
several other instances where the user is hard-coded to tomcat6, e.g. in
the creation of the tomcat6 user itself, and the set-up of authbind.
This therefore requires more than just respecting dpkg-statoverride. I
think it would need the ability to configure a user that tomcat should
run as using debconf-set-selections so this could be set before
installing the package.

The default version of /etc/default/tomcat6 installed by the tomcat6
package contains this as its first line:

# Run Tomcat as this user ID. Not setting this or leaving it blank will use the
# default of tomcat6.
#TOMCAT6_USER=tomcat6

Given the current broken state of the tomcat6 package, this line is at
best extremely misleading.

You are only testing /etc/tomcat6/. This is not in the list of files
that the package is modifying. See comment 2 in this bug or the
package's postinst script.

[Bug 557300] Re: tomcat6 does not respect dpkg-statoverride settings

2010-04-23 Thread Max
Why the change in subject? I believe the original, as edited by Thierry
Carrez is correct. The problem is more than just the fact that tomcat6
does not respect statoverrides. See comments 3, 4 & 5.

[Bug 557300] Re: tomcat6 package should fully support running as a different user

2010-05-20 Thread Max
It sounds like either 2 or 3 would 'fix' the bug. Solution two strikes
me as the simplest from the end-user perspective, and has the added
advantage that it would allow future package updates to tweak
permissions.

[Bug 557300] Re: tomcat6 package should fully support running as a different user

2010-06-14 Thread Max
As far as I can tell, this is now working okay. I haven't been able to
test a package upgrade, but have tried installing a new package with and
without /etc/default/tomcat6 already existing and with/without
TOMCAT6_[USER|GROUP] being set and all seems well. If the tomcat6 user
and group are customised, the package sets the ownership as requested
and also does not create any extra users or groups.

The only slight problem is that the group for the log and cache
directories is hard-coded to adm and any post-installation changes will
be reverted by package updates. I think we can live with this, but we
had previously changed this group to be the same as the group for the
other directories.

It is not possible for a sysadmin to tweak the permissions of
directories as these will not be honoured by future package updates (no
statoverride checks). I believe this is intentional.

[Bug 1130599] [NEW] make openvpn's net-tools dependency optional

2013-02-20 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

The net-tools package (provides ifconfig etc) is deprecated on GNU/Linux for
decades already in favor of iproute2.
Openvpn is capable to work with iproute2 if compiled with ./configure
--enable-iproute2
Thus openvpn package should be compiled with --enable-iproute2 and depend on
iproute2 instead of net-tools.

[Bug 913857] [NEW] ntp-keygen documentation lists options that ntp-keygen does not support

[Bug 236931] [NEW] openssh-server does not find dsa keys authorized_keys file

2008-06-02 Thread Max V.K.
Public bug reported:

using:
server os: ubuntu 8.04
openssh-server: 1:4.7p1-8ubuntu1.2

client os: debian etch 4.0
openssh-client: 4.3p2-9etch2

what I wanted:
needed to login without password into ubuntu server from debian client as root.

what I did:
1. on client:
1.1 created dsa key with the command:
ssh-keygen -t dsa
1.2 copied public key to the server's authorized_keys file.
1.3 tried to login, failed (have been asked for a password)

2. on server:
2.1 increased loglevel to:
LogLevel DEBUG3
on the server
2.2 restarted the server:
invoke-rc.d ssh restart
2.3. polled on /var/log/auth.log

3. back on client side:
3.1 tried to login, as root:
ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and have been asked for password

4. on server in the poll I got:
=== start dump ==

[Bug 830277] [NEW] ntpdate manpage is inconsistent about threshold

2011-08-20 Thread Max Rabkin
Public bug reported:

from `man ntpdate`:

Time adjustments are made by ntpdate in one of two ways. If ntpdate
determines the clock is in error more than 0.5 second it will sim‐
ply step the time by calling the system settimeofday() routine. If the
error is less than 0.5 seconds, it will slew the time by call‐
ing the system adjtime() routine. The latter technique is less
disruptive and more accurate when the error is small, and works quite
well when ntpdate is run by cron every hour or two.

but later on:

-B Force the time to always be slewed using the adjtime() system
call, even if the measured offset is greater than +-128 ms. The
default is to step the time using settimeofday() if the
offset is greater than +-128 ms. Note that, if the offset is much
greater than +-128 ms in this case, that it can take a long time
(hours) to slew the clock to the correct value. During this
time. the host should not be used to synchronize clients.

Is the true value 0.128 s or 0.5 s?

2011-10-08 Thread Max Bowsher
The puzzling line of output is something like:

root

which appears without any explanation in the output of an apt operation
when etckeeper is invoked.

A suitable "patch" would be to simply add >/dev/null to the "bzr whoami"
invocation in 50vcs-commit.sh

[Bug 682500] Re: Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.

2010-11-28 Thread Max Bowsher
Pedro,

Please reproduce the failure, then run "echo $SSH_AUTH_SOCK" in the same
shell, and tell us whether the result begins /tmp/ssh- or /tmp/keyring-
: this will ascertain whether you are using the openssh ssh-agent, or
the reimplementation of the ssh-agent protocol in gnome-keyring-daemon.

I suspect the latter, in which case this bug needs to be on the gnome-
keyring package, not the openssh one.

[Bug 1071529] [NEW] Version bump request to 2.0.6+

2012-10-25 Thread Max Barry
Public bug reported:

As per:

They include significant bug fixes, including a fix for a race condition
that makes mod_perl unreliable on Ubuntu Server (see: http://www

[Bug 1554266] [NEW] sshd does not start on newly installed desktop system

2016-03-07 Thread Max Brustkern
Public bug reported:

When I preseed a desktop install using utah for daily iso testing, the
ssh service is not running when it starts up. journalctl -u ssh shows no
entries. If I manually start the ssh service, it seems to work. If I
reboot, sshd is running. On the first boot, however, it is not. This
problem appears to have started on the March 5 image.

Re: [Bug 1554266] Re: sshd does not start on newly installed desktop system

2016-03-09 Thread Max Brustkern
I re-ran this job:
https://platform-qa-jenkins.ubuntu.com/view/smoke-default/job/ubuntu-xenial-desktop-amd64-smoke-default/
It installs from the daily iso using utah. It uses a preseed here:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-test-case-dev/ubuntu-test-cases/desktop/view/head:/preseeds/default.cfg
that installs openssh-server via pkgsel.

To verify what was going on, I connected virt-manager to the jenkins
executor node (venonat) and opened a console on the VM while it was waiting
to time out. If you need assistance setting up this recreate method, I can
provide that.

[Bug 1328958] Re: Local provider run on cloud images want ubuntu user

2014-06-24 Thread Max Brustkern
I still have the same problem on my workstation running utopic after a
long series of upgrades, so I don't think it's exclusive to cloud
images.

There we go! I have /home/ubuntu left over from an old setup simulating
the conditions in the CI lab, but I have no ubuntu user. I'll delete
/home/ubuntu and try again.

[Bug 1362224] [NEW] local provider creates all containers with the same MAC address

2014-08-27 Thread Max Brustkern
Public bug reported:

When I run juju with the local provider on utopic, all of the containers are

[Bug 1025244] Re: qcow2 image increasing disk size above the virtual limit

2014-12-16 Thread Max Reitz
@Mario, in theory an image "that should be taking up 30 GB" with four
snapshots should be taking up at most about 150 GB, of course. Now the
question is what you mean by "should be taking up 30 GB" and by "is
taking 600+ GB".

For the latter, did you query the file length (ls -l) or the actual size
(qemu-img info, "disk size")?

For the former, if you have a virtual disk size of 1 TB and the guest
reports 30 GB are used, that doesn't mean that qemu knows that only 30
GB are used. If you delete a file in the guest, it will report less
space being used; however, qemu doesn't know about that unless the guest
bothers to discard the now unused sectors. If it doesn't (and I don't
see a reason why a guest should discard sectors on an HDD), the guest
will just remove the file metadata but the data will stay there (and may
be overwritten later by the guest when creating new files etc.). qemu
has no idea that that data is now unused, therefore it must treat those
sectors as being in use.

If your image indeed has a virtual disk size of 30 GB, has four
snapshots, is clean (qemu-img check) and does take up 600+ GB of actual
disk space, that should indeed not be happening (unless there's some
case I forgot to consider).

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441)

2008-05-01 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
This is a very old and well known problem. See also
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772774 and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293513&highlight=cifs+vfs

I wonder why this bug is not fixed yet!

It has been proposed to change S31umountnfs.sh to K14umountnfs.sh in
/etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d. For me that works fine, but I am not shure
that it can't create inconveniences in other cases. Please have a look
at this simple workaround whether it can be recommended.

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441)

2008-05-12 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I agree with flaccid: This perpetuating and ennoying bug should be fixed
as soon as possible!

That has even become more important with Hardy, since "smbfs" does not
exist as a workaround any more, "smbmount" being nothing more than a
wrapper for "mount.cifs".

The simple solution proposed in the link quoted by flaccid is the same
as what I mentionned above, changing the shutdown-sequence. Would please
an expert have a look at this to make sure it cannot cause other
troubles!

[Bug 294728] [NEW] Public shares not possible in home folder (Hardy 8.04)

2008-11-06 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Folders in my home directory can not be shared with guest access
permission, even if the acces mode is set to 0777. That is the case with
net usershare as well as with shares in /etc/samba/smb.conf. The
automatic adding of permissions in Nautilus does not help either.

Obviously this is a bug in samba 3.0.28 a ( Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron),
because it is fixed in Samba 3.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.10 Intrepid Ibex). Please
fix it in Hardy too (Hardy is LTS!).

[Bug 294728] Re: Public shares not possible in home folder (Hardy 8.04)

2008-11-06 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
What do you actually mean by "configuration section"? The few lines for
the share only or the [global] part also?

[Gemeinsam]
path = /home/farber/Gemeinsam
available = yes
browsable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes

The share is not accessible at all even if /home/farber/Gemeinsam is
set to mode 0777. As soon as I comment out the line "# public = yes",
personal access is possible.

We are already waiting for years, and nothing did really happen. It is a

Even if it is far from being a perfect solution, it is better to propose

[Bug 294728] Re: Public shares not possible in home folder (Hardy 8.04)

2008-11-12 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
@ Mathias Gug

Is that what you did need?

Perhaps that can help you: Public shares inside a directory (in this
case it is "/home/farber/") are possible only if the access to the
*whole* directory is allowed for everyone. This is not normal. It should
be enough to allow access to the share. It had always been like that
before, and it is so in Intrepid again, but not in Hardy. Nobody would
like to set his entire home directory to mode 0777 to be able to install
public shares!

I am afraid the problem is that in this case nobody really feels
responsible. Is it a problem of the shutdown sequence (Ubuntu problem),
of the cifs Kernel module (Linux general) or a Samba bug? Who has got to

As long as nobody feels responsible there is not much hope indeed.

[Bug 596064] Re: nmbd fails to start on boot - problem with upstart

2010-10-13 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I can reproduce it on Lucid and Maverick under the following conditions:

 - the network is a WLAN
 - the connection is made by Network Manager or WICD

I don't know what the condition "net-device-up IFACE!=lo" in
/etc/init/nmbd.conf is really needed for. Can it be recommended to leave
it out and to change the line to "start on local-filesystems", as it is
in /etc/init/smbd.conf? Could that leed to some inconveniences?

A workaround is a post-connection script in WICD with the command
"service nmbd start".

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2009-04-13 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Thanks for this status update.

As Thuerry Carrez proposed, I tried to avoid system wide CIFS mounts via
fstab by monting my cifs shares manually with "mount.cifs ..." in my
home folder. The shutdown problem is still the same.

Using GNOME vfs pseudomounts is not a solution for me because the cifs
UNIX extensions would not work.

[Bug 34181] Re: locale and charset problem in mysql - default character set should be set to utf8

2009-08-28 Thread Jean-Max Reymond
very annoying bug because mysqldump is running as utf-8 (system
language) but your server in running as latin1 (default for Ubuntu)
somysqldump is doing a conversion which fails

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2009-10-29 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
An other important reason is that gvfs does not support "cifs UNIX
Extensions" yet.

I absolutely do agree with Tom and varanasi. This is a serious usability
problem that should be fixed as soon as possible!

2010-04-11 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I had already mentioned above: It's not only a network-manager problem
because it is exactly the same with WICD.
