[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release

2014-01-22 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Also the lack of frequent (monthly) updates, also forced me to delay
filing paperwork to give me upload (maintainer) rights for the package
during the Saucy. Which probably would've given me a voice when moving
to Stable (to stop it).

[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release

2014-01-22 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Ravindra,

It is built with --without-kernel-modules, I had to check the revision
changelog, it stayed.

Also, I've linked the Saucy branch to this bug, so you can see my
previous changes.

Another reason I'm still kind of fighting is because the Ubuntu-specific
changes made, still might not be compatible with Ubuntu.

I uploaded last devel Trusty package to one of my repos, so if I need
to, I can make the necessary changes, and move them to the Stable
package (as was my plan for this cycle, but the failure to communicate
(ignoring the unofficial maintainer of the Ubuntu Package), put that on
hold).

[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release

2014-01-22 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Dmitry (#8),

As you are well aware, Ubuntu uses the bleeding edge kernels, and one of
the nice things about devel packages was that, when they were being
released on a more frequent rate), the devel releases where more quicker
to adapt to the newest (release candidate) kernels.

I know stable releases are better (you keep reminding me). But I'm kind
of impatient, and I would like to get to stop the module build failures
as fast as possible. And like I said, the joy of the devel releases was
that I would only have to wait a month (or so) to see if compatibility
for X kernel was added (in the devel package). If it was, I could test
it, create the merge proposal, and (after approval) wait for the next
problem to arise.

And since the git repo doesn't updates as I fast I would like to, I
can't simply grab fixes (patches) for the broken package. I have to wait
from a patch from someone (who's better with the kernel than I am), to
fix the problem.

I'm gonna stop there before I confuse you more. But before I do, I want
to ask two things.

1) How are other Distributions responding when you're asking them to move to
the Stable packaging?
2) The file needed for compatibility with 3.12 is VMware own version of the
uidgid.h file. I want to wrap up the 3.12 issues before I start tackling the
3.13 stuff.

[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release

2014-01-22 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Dmitry (#9),

All the modules are being compiled (except ones that have caused build
failures), but only vmxnet and vmhgfs are being installed/used.

Speaking of vmxnet, I assume the pcnet32 is recommended over vmxnet. If
so, I can just remove vmxnet from the install.

I think Debian only compiles vmxnet and vmhgfs because of their
configuration of dkms (which I planned on switching to after I got the
Ubuntu package working with the Trusty kernel).

[Bug 1269985] Re: Revert package back to Devel release

2014-01-22 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Dmitry,

I don't think we're using the built in-kernel vmblock. That's what's
one of the reasons I wanted to keep the Devel package (for the moment)
is because I had some specific changes for Ubuntu, that weren't in
Debian. Some other ones were removing manpages of modules that have
been removed from the package itself (like vmxnet3 or vmmemctl).

I would love to get these packages updated faster, but you guys aren't
pushing monthly devel releases (that's one of the reasons why I was
still using Devel releases) any more. And the git repo (when it still
worked) is update the day before release.

[Bug 1269985] [NEW] Revert package back to Devel release

2014-01-16 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Public bug reported:

The package doesn't build our kernels, no patches in the world will be
get it work. The only way for it to work is through VMware itself
because the package a brand new file that only they supply.

Also, do you know the incompatibilities that have come up now that you
just decided to start syncing with Debian without consulting the person
who has put his hard work and time into the package.

We need to get the devel package to be working 100% (with trusty), then
get it working with the stable release, then we can start syncing Debian
with our changes.

I feel incredibly betrayed that this change was made without an e-mail.
I may not be the maintainer, but I've put my time in getting this
package working over the course of the last couple of cycles.

[Bug 1267254] Re: Please do not package devel snapshots

2014-01-09 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
I'll look into it I'm just waiting for Debian to settle down a little
bit because there's a new maintainer (who I've been contract with), and
there's bit of activity.

As soon as it settles down, I'm to check the difference between the
debian folder from the our packaging and the one from Debian (before the
changes). I want to see if there are things in our package that needs
to be copied over when I pull in the Stable packaging.

Based on a Google search (and review of the build log), I think we're

[Bug 1236265] Re: vmghfs not being build

2013-10-07 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
For those who wish to help me figure this out. Here's the notable part of the
boot log:
[ 125.729819] vmhgfs: disagrees about version of symbol
vmci_datagram_destroy_handle
[ 125.729823] vmhgfs: Unknown symbol vmci_datagram_destroy_handle (err -22)

vmci_datagram_create_handle
[ 125.729909] vmhgfs: Unknown symbol vmci_datagram_create_handle (err -22)

Don't know which version of vmci it is: Package or Kernel

The current incarnation of my prep branch (which I updated 30 minutes
ago) is taking vmci completely out of the package equation (as in DKMS
doesn't notice it during the build process).

Since you didn't specify which VMware product you're using I'm going to
assume it's the new version of Workstation/Player/Fusion possibly
available. Use those tools that come with the program

[Bug 1231148] [NEW] FFe: requested for Saucy package because of module build failure

2013-09-25 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Public bug reported:

I am requesting a Freeze exception for the Saucy package, despite the
fact I didn't need one the last time this happened during the Raring
cycle. I was told this package is not a core package, and therefore
is excluded from the Feature Freeze.

I'll be honest, this has been an annoying cycle for me. There was so
much I had planned for the Saucy cycle, including gaining uploader
rights (since I've been the one maintaining this package for the last
many cycles). I've attached the Blueprint detailing the plan for the
Saucy cycle.

Also, Upstream hasn't released new upstream release since April, and
I've been waiting for the relevant patches to pop up for fix build
failures. My knowledge with the kernel itself is limited. Also,
VMware's git repo hasn't been online for months.

I'm requesting this because I've put a good amount of time into my
current pending merge proposal (which is linked in this bug report). And
I'd rather lose all this work that I've put time into testing (to see if
everything works).

I am also waiting for said new upstream release, so it can fix the
remaining problems with the remaining modules (which are currently
blocked from building with DKMS). The next proposal (with the new
upstream release) will occur eventually.

Daily build of my Preparation Bzr branch using a recipe. After
everything works, I repackage it with the orig.tar.gz package.

It's at 0ubuntu2.1 because everything was working (except one module
which has been flaky this whole cycle). I pushed the 0ubuntu2 packaging
then everything started breaking with the Linux 3.10 upload.

For the record, whenever I do updates for this package I always test it
using the same recipe (just changing versioning and bzr branch URL).
And I won't create a merge proposal until I think the package is ready.

Just added my Saucy Prep branch. I'm waiting for new upstream release to
create the proposal, should be any day now (they just released VMware

Saucy package fix submitted first (as soon as I get a new upstream

But I'm honestly waiting for a new upstream release. I add this to

2013-07-22 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
No new upstream release, yet.

But I want to say I plan on submitting what I have, it still won't work
with Linux 3.10 (I have no clue where to begin without breaking
everything), but at least it's something.

I guess this is because Upstream doesn't do releases monthly anymore
(which is a great shame), I haven't been able to clone their git repo
(which I recall only gets updated just before a release).

Assuming, there's no upstream release, or someone who knows the kernel
itself better than I do supplies me with a patch. I plan on creating
merge proposal at week's end.

Update:
The proposed update will be upstream packaging from the Raring upload, with the
Precise config. I tried the whole Raring packaging and add/remove stuff, but
it was being a pain.

The proposal will be submitted in a week or so (after I test it with the
3.2 Precise kernel) should have compatibility through the 3.7 kernel.

2013-05-24 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
I can give an update. The first update is basically done, just got to
create proposal. The only issue right now is you can't use shared
folders (vmhgfs can't be loaded), which may or may not be related to
incompatibilities with GCC 4.8, and being forced to add that CFLAG to
allow it to build (which will be removed after upstream releases a new
version, assuming compatibilities are fixed). But the vmxnet module
works.

Yeah I figured that out.

2013-05-20 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Looking at my notes I have to add some stuff back to the DKMS files.
Make a few changes to debian/control.

My goal is to make this update the first upload as the official
maintainer of the package, I just have to send e-mails to sponsors for
testimonials. Timetable: a month, testimonials will probably take like a
week. I just want to get the 1st Saucy proposal submitted and approved,
and that will take a couple of weeks

I hope you understand.

After doing some googleing, I found a solution, adding a CFLAG does the
trick. Until we get a newer version. I'll put a proposal together
later this week, after approval, I'll get started on revision 2 (the
point of this first one was to get the package building successfully).

2013-05-19 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
My plan is to backport the Raring packaging. I plan to start working as
soon my CVE fix gets approved for raring, as well as my Saucy proposal.

It's gonna be a good amount of work because there's stuff in the
Quantal/Raring packages that won't work in Precise. So basically it'll
be a little bit of trial and error. I'll probably do a complete
backport, and work my way back from there. After everything is where I
want it to be, I create the proposal.

This is one of the reasons I want to start backporting the newer
packages to versions like 12.04. This is part of my Saucy blueprint.
But first I want to finish up my work (and proposal) on the Saucy
update, as well as submit my developer application.

But we have to be really careful, or we'll break stuff that works.

2013-05-01 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
In progress. I've linked prep branch. It'll be slow work until we get
the LiveCD start coming out, and also it's still early in the
development cycle, so I'm taking my time.

I still have to test the packaging, but the prep branch isn't mature
enough to start auto building it, since the (planned) major changes
haven't been pushed yet.

Sorry about all the activity, there were issues with my proposal. Stuff
from my original proposal weren't brought into the newer branches.

I might bring that patch in on the next proposal (I want to do one more

supported)

I've linked this bug report to the my proposal.

This is the packaging: https://launchpad.net/~n-muench/+archive/virtual-

NOTE: This has been tested on the 3.7 kernel, but not on the 3.8 kernel.

Have you read the Upstream bug report (it's under remote bug watches)?

Just disable vmsync on newer kernels, this driver is not needed as long as
kernel provides FIFREEZE/FITHAW ioctls.

I told you the problem and the solution. I have the branch done, I'm

[Bug 1088053] [NEW] Kernel needs to provide FIFREEZE/FITHAW ioctl so that open-vm-dkms can build

2012-12-08 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Public bug reported:

Hello,

My name is Nate, and I'm responsible for keeping the open-vm-tools
package up to date.

I am requesting that ioctl (specifically FIFREEZE/FITHAW ioctl) please
be compiled into the kernel (if it hasn't already) because vmsync
doesn't compile since newer kernel (namely 3.6 and greater). Yes, I
know it's depreciated but it need to be done.

I'm reporting this now because I've known about this for a month or so
because I have a scratch machine and both that and Ubuntu are different
environments, and I just installed Raring for the first time. And since
Ubuntu's kernel has more stuff that the normal kernel, I wanted to know
if the module would compile.

Here's part of the info I got:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/share/apport/package-hooks/dkms_packages.py, line 22, in module
import apport
ImportError: No module named apport
Error! Build of vmsync.ko failed for: 3.7.0-5-generic (i686)

This is coming directly from upstream
(http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=3579185group_id=204462atid=989708).

I can do some of the work from my end (taking out mentions of the vmsync
module for dkms from the debian folder, and upload the new config to bzr
and wait for approval). But in order for me to upload and mark (my
packaging) for approval, I need this to be done please.

Obviously, I'm posting this so I also get a bug report number, that I
can put in my packaging's changelog

2012-07-02 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
I forgot this existed. I backported the dkms patch from Precise, but I
need someone to please create the oneiric-proposed branch. I am unable
to make a request for a merge until oneiric-proposed actually exists.

[Bug 1019031] [NEW] open-vm-dkms fails to install because of dkms

2012-06-28 Thread Nate Muench (Mink)
Public bug reported:

I am filing this bug mainly, so I have something to mark in my proposal
(which will probably be thrown out because I'm apparently a lunatic, my
words, with no evidence to back it up)

DistroRelease: Ubuntu Quantal Alpha 1
Package: open-vm-dkms 2011.12.20-562307-0ubuntu2

When attempting to install the packaging on a clean machine (which I did
to see if the kernel built properly, I doubt it) it fails to download or
install (I'm installing open-vm-tools, open-vm-toolbox, and open-vm-
dkms).

Here's what I'm getting when I install through Terminal:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
open-vm-dkms : Depends: dkms but it is not going to be installed

Through Synaptic:
Wants me to uninstall/remove a couple dozen packages (unity, xserver, checkbox,
etc)

This is happening even if I have quantal-proposed checked or not.

Using my packaging (aka the stuff I've been trying get into the Quantal
Repo for the last month or so), which was rebuilt within the last day
(to build against the newer procps), installs without issues.
