2016-04-01 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

  upgrade to MySQL 5.7.10 and above, Ubuntu 16.04

  [Transition Status]
+
+ Test in ppa:mysql-ubuntu/mysql-5.7. We included all reverse build
+ depends of libmysqlclient-dev and all reverse depends of
+ libmysqlclient18. Could there be anything else that we've missed?
+ Packages that did not rebuild smoothly are:

  plugin_auth_common.h: fix agreed, patch to mysql-5.7 pending:
  * anope
  * cctools
  * cvm
  * dsyslog
  * gentle
  * kamailio
  * libdbi-drivers
  * mailutils
  * mysqlmail
  * opensmtpd-extras
  * libodb-mysql (libmysqlclient_r fixed in PPA; header issue remaining)

  libmysqlclient_r: replaced by libmysqlclient, need to link against that
instead, so needs patching for: (bug 1564871) - Robie
  * cacti-spine: fixed
  * hhvm: fixed, but hit isnan issue
  * icinga2: fixed
  * mysql++: pending; hit autoreconf issue

  test failures:
  * cfengine3: FAILING - Lars
  * libgda5: FAILING - Lars
  * lighttpd: FAILING - Lars

  uses internal client functions:
  * myodbc: needs version bump; looks difficult/invasive. Bug 1564856
  * mysql-proxy: pending (?) - Lars
  * mysql-workbench: pending (?) - Lars
  * net-snmp (compile error: load_defaults): load_defaults may be exported by
upstream - Norvald

  maybe not mysql-related:
  * gnokii: compile error
  * kannel-sqlbox: configure error: Kannel gwlib is required!
  * kodi (compile error: isnan)
  * libreoffice (compile error: isnan): pending rebuild test
  * netopng: not needed (same missing archs as archive)
  * php5: not needed (pending deletion)

  other:
  * coturn - warning in client_plugin.h + -Werror?

Yeah. We're planning on patching MySQL to turn that into a warning
instead of an error. Upstream may be willing to do that for future 5.7
releases for us as well. Since the alternative is to adjust
dbconfig-common, and I'm told that is pretty invasive.

I'm not sure what this means in terms of blocking other things. I think
it'd be acceptable to allow other packages through proposed despite a
MySQL dep8 test failure. We'll hold MySQL until its own dep8 failures
are fixed.

[Bug 1545913] Re: [FFe] juju-core 2.0

2016-03-31 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

  The juju team is requesting an FFE for juju-core. Juju2 represents API
  changes and new features and bugfixes for juju. We are NOT requesting a
  place on any image for xenial. This FFE is intended to cover the
  acceptance of the updated juju-core package, as well as the new package
  juju-core-1.25, which is a new version of the existing juju-core package
  allowing the existing juju1 binary to be installed.

  and in the final release notes.

  Timeline

  We have released 2 alphas, and 3 betas for juju2 so far, in addition 3 alpha
builds of 1.26 which became 2.0. All targeted 2.0 features are now
implemented, and we anticipate releasing one release candidate before a final
stable build. Juju missed uploading any versions of 2.0 to the archive itself,
as well as the initial projected date of having beta1 in xenial before feature
freeze. However, juju has been released regularly during the development cycle
inside the juju ppa. You can see the details on the delivered features and
milestones on https://launchpad.net/juju-core/2.0. The final stable build will
be ready in time for the xenial release.

  Upgrades

  Users upgrading from trusty will find their juju version updated. The current
juju-core package will be provided as juju-1.25. Update-alternatives will
provide support for toggling /usr/bin/juju between juju-1.25 and juju-2.0
binaries.

  We have tested to ensure the intended behavior occurs for the following
  scenarios:

  New Xenial:
  No juju, apt-get install juju, juju version will be 2.0.
  Example using ppa:

  Upgrading Trusty/Wily/old Xenial:
  Already installed juju 1.X, upgraded to latest 1.25.4, 2.0 also installed and
is the default juju, update-alternatives used to switch between the two.
  Example using ppa:
-

  Risks
  -
  Although juju itself is now feature complete for 2.0, the MAAS 2.0 support
will require additional work to be fully supported. MAAS 2.0 is currently under
development as well, and is an alpha3 at the time of this writing. Juju will
need to add support for the final version of MAAS 2.0, and this is a risk of
occurring after xenial is released. If so, we expect to release an sru for
juju-core soon after xenial releases to provide this support.

  Quality / Testing
  -
  As this version breaks API with 1.0, testing for features regressions as well
as fixing old bugs and avoiding new bugs has been important. The juju team and
the greater juju community has been testing 2.0 to ensure it’s stable and ready
to support all of the 1.0 workloads in addition to making use of the new 2.0
features.

  In comparison to juju-1.25:

  * Tests improvements including
  * MAAS testing improved
  * Container networking
  * 9 non-voting tests are now voting
  * New tests for all 2.0 features
  * Powerpc toolchain is vastly improved
  * No test regressions!
  * S390 builds reliably, is fully tested and is treated the same as other
supported architectures
  * 114 bugs has been fixed

  Juju practices continuous integration and testing of the juju source
  tree. All voting tests must pass for ubuntu before release. For example,
  for beta3, you can see all tests are passing on ubuntu. The full details
  are here: http://reports.vapour.ws/releases/3815.

  The community has also been actively involved with testing, providing
  feedback, and adopting 2.0 throughout the development cycle.

  * 250 bugs and wishlist items filed
  * 4 bugs fixed by community members
  * ~100-125 downloads for each ppa release

  Community Adoption
  --
  The community has already begun adopting 2.0, and is dependent upon 2.0 being
inside xenial.

[Bug 1558336] Re: [needs-packaging] juju-mongo-tools3.2 in xenial, wily, and trusty

2016-03-24 Thread Robie Basak
I reviewed
~sinzui/ubuntu/xenial/juju-mongo-tools3.2/xenial-mongo-tools3.2 revno 19
for upload.

Summary: looks good, one thing to fix in debian/rules, then I can make the
other changes and am happy to upload.

Good job sending the syscall patch upstream. I appreciate the dep3
header telling me the status.

In override_dh_clean, rm -rf /tmp/go-build* will interfere with other
concurrent builds. We shouldn't stomp on the system like this. I'm not
sure the build should leave anything in /tmp at all. Maybe use TMPDIR to
make it use somewhere else, then clean that? Is there a standard pattern
for this that we can use?

Other notes (I can fix up):

No need for override_dh_strip any more (golang-go produced binaries can
now be stripped according to bug 1318027). When fixed, can remove
lintian overrides. Maybe best to leave for now as we're short on time,
but can leave a bug open to do later.

No need for override_dh_builddeb since xz is default on Xenial, or are
you leaving this for backporting ease? If so, then do we know xz will
work as far back as you want to backport?

debian/copyright looks superficially OK to me, and I'm happy that Curtis
can maintain these accurately. Leaving it for the AA to review once.
Same with debian/missing-sources. Good job on identifying that this was
required and taking care of it.

Embedded dependencies: I see 10 bundled dependencies, and four -dev
packages which presumably override them (cannot check due to lack of
build, see below). Are the others acceptable to AAs to bundle?

Changelog should close LP bug. Changelog arch reference is presumably
superseded now as we're bulding Arch: any?

I'm not sure where to get the orig tarball and there is no debian/watch
file.

Cannot (easily) check lintian without orig tarball.

Cannot (easily) build test without orig tarball. So I basically just
reviewed the debian/ directory by looking at it only. It is nice and
small and easy to review - thanks.

Everything looks good now, but my test build failed on armhf:
https://launchpad.net/~racb/+archive/ubuntu/experimental/+build/9394477

Looks like a segfault (Bus error) stops mongodb from starting.

 rbasak: I think we should care about it
 rbasak: I don't think I have the expertise to fix a mongo build failure
on armhf. it won't build on my chromebook :)#

I'm happy to upload this as-is, but this may cause a hold up at archive
admin or release team review as I understand that the armhf build was
expected to work. Please let me know which you'd prefer.

My tree is at https://git.launchpad.net/~racb/+git/juju-mongodb.
sinzui-2.6-fixes (0afe0ab) is what I can upload; experimental-2.6
(5e8dca2) is what I tested in my experimental PPA.

[Bug 1557852] Re: [needs-packaging] juju-mongodb3.2 in xenial, wily, and trusty

2016-03-24 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for the update. I've reviewed the patches now they have
headers so I can follow what's going on. Most look OK. I'm unhappy with
two:

1. arm64-immediate-delete-should-wait-cursor.patch IMHO inappropriately
disables a test that correctly tests positive. This should be fixed
properly, or allowed to FTBFS on arm64, or arm64 builds need to be
disabled. Happy to follow Ubuntu archive admin or release team guidance.

2. offset-outside-of-bounds.patch: tests disabled due to GCC-5. As noted
this should be fixed properly and upstreamed. Perhaps this should be
combined into disable-warnings.patch? Not sure if this is OK to upload
or not. Happy to follow Ubuntu archive admin or release team guidance.

The changelog needs updating to match changes made based on 2.6 - I
don’t think it’s accurate any more. Ideally it would include changes not
uploaded to the archive, so perhaps rebase on 2.6 and squash into
previous PPA entry? rbasak is happy to do this before upload when the
other items are resolved (so he doesn’t have to keep changing the
description of what changed as we change things).

I've not tested build since resolving above items may influence outcome.

My tree (with some additional changes) is at

[Bug 1557830] Re: [needs-packaging] juju-mongodb2.6 in xenial, wily, and trusty

2016-03-21 Thread Robie Basak
Thanks, this looks good.

AFAICS, the quilt patches in Ubuntu mongodb 1:2.6.10-0ubuntu1 apply with
only offset, not fuzz. This is allowed, so refreshing wasn't necessary.
I can see that your refresh (and one line of series being moved) is
effectively a no-op but it would be easier for me if we didn't refresh
things unnecessarily to reduce review diff. Similarly the change to
COMMON_OPTIONS in debian/rules just adds diff and is a no-op, so I'd
prefer not to have it.

I'm not sure what approach to take against mongodb 3.2 here though, as
there's nothing really to diff against except 2.6.

I've also been grappling a little with coming up with a good review
strategy for these packages in general. I ended up using meld to examine
a 3-way diff between your tree, Ubuntu mongodb 1:2.6.10-0ubuntu1 and
Ubuntu juju-mongodb 2.4.10-0ubuntu6. I'm much happier now that I can see
better what you changed, though I will have to do something different
for 3.2. With this though, I found a couple of other things that I
missed before. Sorry to go back to you again on this.

Ubuntu mongodb 1:2.6.10-0ubuntu1 introduced --use-system-v8, but you
haven't carried this forward. Is this expected (not described in
changelog)? Perhaps it is because of --disable-scripting but I'm not
sure.

You also introduced a nocheck wrapper around override_dh_auto_build
which isn't in any of the base versions. This looks unintentional to me,
or was it intended?

[Bug 1558310] Re: Latest updated stopped exim4

2016-03-19 Thread Robie Basak
Hi Peter,

I believe the security team were stuck between this behaviour and
leaving users vulnerable. See http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-2933-1/ for
details. There's also information in
/usr/share/doc/exim4-config/NEWS.Debian.

If there's some way to solve this that fixes the security problem and
also doesn't hit some users with customised configurations then we'd
love to hear it. But otherwise, this was known by the security team at
the time of issuing the update, and the alternative of not leaving users
vulnerable was chosen, so I'm marking this bug as Won't Fix.

If you can propose some other solution, please do so and set the bug
status back to New. Thanks!

[Bug 1557830] Re: [needs-packaging] juju-mongodb2.6 in xenial, wily, and trusty

2016-03-19 Thread Robie Basak
Hi Curtis,

This looks good. A few minor things:

1. Please run update-maintainer so as not to make the Debian mongodb
maintainer appear to be responsible for this package.

2. Architecture list in d/control: we prefer to just say "Architecture:
any" and let things FTBFS on architectures we are not directly
targeting. This makes life easier for porters, for example xnox. Please
update the architecture lists to xnox's satisfaction.

3. Quilt patch drops are misleadingly documented, since patches have
changed as well as been dropped. Maybe it's easier to just say that
you've synced upstream patches with the mongodb 1:2.6.10-0ubuntu1 from
the archive? I'd be fine with that as a changelog entry.

4. As discussed on IRC, since you based this on ubuntu4 and we've had 5
and 6, there are some things that could have been dropped. Please can
you check this? If everything is fine, just document that in the
changelog.

5. As discussed on IRC, xnox doesn't want this to regress over
architecture support he ported in juju-mongodb 2.4. Please could you
coordinate with him to reach a conclusion on this? I don't care what you
do here as long as xnox is happy. This may involve adding patches. If
you add patches to juju-mongodb, it may make sense to also add them to
mongodb and/or send things to Debian or upstream. Then our diffs would
remain smaller for the future.

I'm happy to upload if the above is resolved (even if that means no
action). In the longer term, it may be worth figuring out a workflow to
keep these Juju-specific mongodb packages updated, as we expect a number
of them. The server team's new git-based workflow for merges might be
worth looking at, since one thing in common is the need to maintain a
delta against something else, and verifying that delta when we bump
upstream versions.

[Bug 1557852] Re: [needs-packaging] juju-mongodb3.2 in xenial, wily, and trusty

2016-03-19 Thread Robie Basak
Hi Curtis,

Again, this looks good on the whole. As discussed on IRC, please add
dep3 headers to the quilt patches to help me review and so that we can
maintain this better going forward.

debian/copyright also probably needs a glance for both this and the 2.6
package, but as discussed I'll leave that between you and the archive
admin.

I've not completed review yet, but the other changes look fairly
straightforward to me. Hopefully this is enough to unblock you.

2016-03-19 Thread Robie Basak
This needs someone to prepare and test a debdiff and follow
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure. This is a
requirement for any updates to the stable release so that we reduce the
risk of regression unaffected users. If you can help with any of this,
please do!

When preparing the quilt patch for the debdiff, please use dep3 headers:

Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

2016-03-14 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for your report.

This looks like a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in
Ubuntu. Specifically, if you want to switch from a third party source to
Ubuntu's official repository, you need to purge all packages from that
PPA first. Problems in migrating from third party PPA to Ubuntu's
repository can't be treated as bugs in Ubuntu.

You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Since we use this bug tracker to track bugs in Ubuntu, rather than
configuration problems, I'm marking this bug as Invalid. This helps us
to focus on fixing bugs in Ubuntu.

[Bug 1528583] Re: [FFe] Please update to MySQL 5.7 series

2016-03-11 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for the detailed testing on this, Lars!

I think that the second issue would not constitute a regression for this
proposed upload; that bug exists already in Xenial. It also doesn't
happen if the Trusty user has mysql-server installed (since that will
cause mysql-server-5.6 to be removed in favour of mysql-server-5.7 in
Xenial). After discussion with Lars, we therefore think that it'll
disappear as soon as we delete src:mysql-5.6 from Xenial and process
NBS, since it is only triggered by mysql-server-5.6.postinst in Xenial.
Or we could try fixing it in Xenial by uploading a new src:mysql-5.6,
but I think that would be a waste of effort since that will be deleted
anyway.

As this bug already exists and we therefore can't regress it by
uploading our new src:mysql-5.7, I presume this should be fine from an
FFe point of view?

So in that case, I think we're ready to upload now. Release Team: please
could you re-ack the FFe?

[Bug 1551175] Re: "net join" to Active Directory may fail

2016-03-10 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. If you can prepare a debdiff (probably one that adds a
quilt patch) then this request can be put forward to the patch pilots
for review, and if they're happy they can upload. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess for details. This is a little
out of date; essentially attach a debdiff and subscribe ~ubuntu-sponsors
when ready. See also http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep3/ for quilt patch
formatting guidelines.

[Bug 1319320] Re: samba does not provide netlogon infos

2016-03-10 Thread Robie Basak
If someone can prepare a backport, please follow the steps at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure to have Trusty
updated.

All the steps documented there need to be followed. In particular, I'm
concerned that we:

1) Explain the bug well enough so the SRU team (who are probably not
familiar with this package) can understand the real user impact in terms
of use case so they can make a decision as to whether backporting the
fix to stable releases justifies the regression risk to existing,
unaffected users.

2) Make sure that the fixing this in a stable Ubuntu release does not
regress existing users of the module not affected by this bug (eg. other
architectures or ways of consuming this module).

3) Have a test case that can be followed by someone not familiar with
the package for SRU verification purposes.

[Bug 1528583] Re: [FFe] Please update to MySQL 5.7 series

2016-03-10 Thread Robie Basak
Lars discovered an upgrade issue from Trusty to Xenial. We think the
issue is that the Trusty apparmor does not support Unix domain socket
rules, and during the upgrade the userspace tools are too old so mysqld
fails to start.

I'm currently building a version in my test PPA that adds an apparmor
dependency to ensure the new apparmor is configured first during the
upgrade. Hopefully this will fix it for anyone upgrading from the latest
Trusty HWE kernel. We're not sure about the Trusty release kernel yet.

We're doing this in ppa:racb/experimental so as not to affect any test
results from those testing for us at the moment. If this works, then
I'll update the main testing ppa:mysql-ubuntu/mysql-5.7 tonight (UK
time). Please note that if you're already testing from the latter PPA
then this may affect your results. If you need me to hold back from
uploading because you need the old version for consistency across test
runs, please let me know and I'll delay uploading.

[Bug 1528583] Re: [FFe] Please update to MySQL 5.7 series

2016-03-08 Thread Robie Basak
I've uploaded an initial cut of the proposed 5.7 packaging to our PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~mysql-ubuntu/+archive/ubuntu/mysql-5.7/+packages
and my current work tree (still being rebased) is available at
https://git.launchpad.net/~racb/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.7/log/?h=5.7v5ubuntu_dev2

I'd appreciate anyone who can test these packages to help inform the
release team about the regression risk for this FFe.

Here are my thoughts on what will be valuable to test and what probably
doesn't need testing.

What doesn't need testing first. This is about the packaging. We
generally trust upstream's QA process for MySQL itself as they have a
good track record on this. So once MySQL is running, we expect it to
work. So no need to test in detail that MySQL is functioning as
expected, expect where functionality interacts with packaging. Testing
that mysql-files and mysql-keyring are working is good, as is that
plugins work, since that interacts with how we ship the files. Testing
the functionality of the SELECT statement probably isn't, since that's a
core thing that is unlikely to be regressed by packaging.

Note that migrating from MariaDB to MySQL is not expected to work
currently unless you manage this process manually yourself.

Next, specific paths to test. We want to check that the package works
both when installed freshly on Xenial and also when upgrading from
Trusty or Wily. Other things that could influence success are how the
user installed on the previous release (eg. which packages were
installed and whether and how configuration files in /etc were changed -
see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=813413 for an
example of a failure case in this area; this one is known to not be
fixed yet as we don't have a good answer).

Previous upgrade paths might also change behaviour - that is, the state
of /var/lib/mysql as it ended up by use of previous MySQL packaging
releases.

If you can help out with testing, please report back in this bug
detailing exactly what you tested and what your results are. Please
report both success and failure. Thanks!

We agreed that dropping the dependency should be fine once the GUI is

[Bug 831487] Re: Dependency on package unattended-upgrades on Ubuntu Server

2016-03-07 Thread Robie Basak
Now that unattended-upgrades defaults to installing security updates in
Xenial, I think this needs more attention. In mitigation, one can
disable unattended-upgrades without removing the package (dpkg-
reconfigure may work, but certainly hitting the files in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d will) but I understand that one can get more
confidence by just purging a package that provides unwanted
functionality.

Unless there's a good reason that unattended-upgrades must be a
dependency. Can it be a Recommends instead, or perhaps be seeded as a
Recommends directly?

2016-03-03 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 1473691] Re: [FFe] squid: Update to latest upstream release (3.5)

2016-02-25 Thread Robie Basak
Uploaded to xenial-proposed. This will dep-wait on libecap3 NEW though,
and libecap will also FTBFS on 32-bit architectures currently, pending a
symbols file fixup.

[Bug 1267255] Re: [MIR] php5 (php5-fpm binary)

2016-02-19 Thread Robie Basak
@Neal,

Any chance you have the time to sweep through the fpm bugs? I don't know
how many of those are relevant, but if everything reported can be
resolved (as no longer applicable, or fixed), then I'd be happy to put
"FPM in main" forward. Note that I'm not a decision maker here though;
there are other considerations too. But it seems to me that this is
unlikely to go forward as long as FPM-related bugs exist.

[Bug 1522422] Re: Update to php 7.0

2016-02-19 Thread Robie Basak
This bug is whatever we (collectively, including you) want it to be. But
if you want it to be a subjective discussion about the pros and cons of
what Canonical should commit to supporting in main, then that's fine but
the developers actually doing the work will just start to ignore bug
comments (since they are not productive), start tracking their actual
work in a different bug, and we'll mark this bug "Opinion" and let you
carry on.

I welcome your opinion, but let's not impede development work by mixing
technical progress with subjective opinionated conversation in the same
bug.

By this I mean that they are not productive to landing PHP 7 in main in
Ubuntu, which is the developers' direct goal for Xenial at the moment
and is what the bug title currently says this bug is for. I didn't mean
to imply that your comments are not productive; sorry if this came

[Bug 1528583] Re: [FFe] Please update to MySQL 5.7 series

2016-02-18 Thread Robie Basak
Requesting an FFe for this please. Lars has had a branch ready for a
while now, and we've already had one review round, but I haven't managed
to review again in time. I expect to get this uploaded in 1-3 weeks.

One complicating factor is that this will trigger a library transition
for libmysqlclient, and I know this is undesirable after FF. In
mitigation, upstream aren't expecting any API changes to cause breakage
- the ABI bump was to clean up unused symbols that shouldn't be
exported.

Upstream are working closely with us on this, and I am a DM for this
package in Debian.

[Bug 1473691] Re: [FFe] squid: Update to latest upstream release (3.5)

2016-02-18 Thread Robie Basak
Requesting a brief (1-3 week) FFe for this please. I have a merge ready,
but there is a transitional bug I want to fix. conffile renaming is
currently not working in some scenarios, which I believe also affects
Debian. It is complicated because of a migration in Debian of squid3 ->
squid which overlaps Ubuntu taking squid3 as default ahead of Debian in
the past, so there are overlapping package renames going on (crossing
the Ubuntu delta) as well as the conffile rename, which isn't working.

I'm still working on fixing this, and I'd prefer to land it when it's
ready rather than right now, because then I don't have to worry about
unsticking users caught by the current bug in another set of
transitional code.

I was delayed by what turned out to be a race condition affecting the
init.d script and system, where systemd cannot find a pid file before
the daemon has written it. A workaround for this is trivial (sleep 4 or
something), but I'd prefer not to land this without fixing it properly
either. But if the release team prefers an earlier landing to grant the
FFe, I can fix the first and leave the second worked around and fix it
properly afterwards. That would allow users to test the actual binaries
and functionality better.

I feel it's quite important to get squid to 3.5 in 16.04, as the current
version is quite out of date.

[Bug 1546358] Re: policycoreutils (in universe) is installed by default by isc-dhcp-server as it is a Recommends

2016-02-18 Thread Robie Basak
Why is a component mismatch critical?

Looks like the original reason Debian added the dependency is
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=797276. Which confuses
me. Doesn't the guard stop it running?

Pierre proposed http://paste.ubuntu.com/15111754/ which looks fine to
me, except that I want to make sure we don't reintroduce that Debian bug
which would make the package explode on postinst on Ubuntu by default.
Can someone check before uploading the fix, please?

[Bug 1479652] Re: [patch] ntpd rejects source UDP ports less than 123 as bogus

2016-02-11 Thread Robie Basak
Thanks Eric, the debdiffs look good to me. I added Origin and Bug-Ubuntu
dep3 headers as discussed on IRC. Apart from that I've uploaded all
three unmodified. Now awaiting SRU team review.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  If an NTP client sends a request with a source port less than 123, the
  packet is silently ignored by ntpd. This is occurring in our environment
  due to NAT.
+
+ [Development Fix]
+
+ Fixed by merge of NTP of newer upstream release that includes the fix.
+ Stuck in dep-wait in xenial-proposed due to an unrelated issue (pps-
+ tools MIR or other resolution).

  [Test Case]

  The problem can easily be reproduced by having an iptable postrouting
  nat forcing the source port to be under 123 set on the client.

  Setup:
   ==> NTP server = y.y.y.y
   ntp.conf configured to be a server.

   ==> NTP client = x.x.x.x
   "ntpdate" used to submmit requests

   #iptable setup to force src port to be lower than 123
   iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p UDP --dport 123  -j SNAT --to-source
x.x.x.x:100-122

  ## On the client, set to force src port < 123 (without patch)

  $ ntpdate y.y.y.y
  ntpdate[]: no server suitable for synchronization found

  ## On the client, set to force src port < 123 (with patch)

  $ ntpdate y.y.y.y
  ntpdate[]: adjust time server y.y.y.y offset -0.028483 sec

  [Regression Potential]

  The patch comes from upstream: http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2174

  A testfix[1] package has been provided to the community before the SRU
  process to bring more confidence for the patch. Positive feedbacks has
  been given by the community to confirm the patch addressed the bug

[Bug 1512980] Re: Please enable PPS in the Ubuntu build of ntpd

2016-02-11 Thread Robie Basak
Fixed in 1:4.2.8p4+dfsg-3ubuntu1, but I missed that pps-tools is in
universe when sponsoring, so it's stuck in dep-wait right now. We need
to look into whether we want to MIR pps-tools, or if pps-tools is not
needed at runtime, or if there is some way to build NTP with PPS support
without pps-tools. At a cursory glance it looks like it's a build time
dependency for headers only, in which case the current proposal to not
require build deps to be in main may resolve this.

[Bug 575458] Re: /etc/dhcp3/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/ntp breaks local NTP server (patch)

2016-02-11 Thread Robie Basak
We've been reviewing the entire Ubuntu delta for ntp, and came across
this sed rule change which is still active. I will drop it for Xenial.

I agree with Jeffrey. The sed rule is incorrect - it does not achieve
what it attempts to achieve, and creates surprising behaviour.

Fundamentally we have two things at odds with each other. There are two
sources for NTP servers: 1) ntp.conf; and 2) any DHCP response. Clearly
there are use cases where the DHCP response should be used over an
ntp.conf default, and there are also use cases where the DHCP response
should be ignored and ntp.conf's default (or changed) settings used
instead.

The only sane thing to do is to pick a default that will work for the
majority of users, and instruct users for whom this does not work on
what to do instead.

If you have configured your system to use DHCP, I think it is reasonable
to expect your system to honor NTP settings received back from DHCP.
IMHO, this should by default overrule any setting in ntp.conf, and so
Debian's current path is sane, and Ubuntu should follow.

Therefore I am dropping Ubuntu's delta on this point for Xenial.

If you have a special case where you are using DHCP but do not want
DHCP's NTP server response to override local settings, then you should
configure the DHCP client you are using to ignore any NTP part of the
DHCP response to get the behaviour you need. I'd appreciate if someone
could comment with exact steps on how to achieve this.

I'll mark this bug Won't Fix now, to reflect the fact that the original
reporter's actual behaviour is the expected behaviour for Xenial
onwards.

[Bug 1539513] Re: networkmanager segfaults with 3.2.21-1ubuntu1

2016-02-01 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

+ [Triage Notes]
+
+ This regression is caused by a libnl proposed update tracked in bug
+ 1511735. It has not been released as an update, only proposed as an
+ update for early testing. If you volunteered to test proposed updates,
+ then thank you. Your care and attention will stop this regression from
+ hitting ordinary users, and we appreciate your contribution to Ubuntu.
+
+ If you are not aware that you volunteered to test proposed updates, then
+ please be aware that your system is configured to do so. In this case,
+ you probably should turn this off. I'd appreciate if someone could
+ explain how to do this in the comments.

I think it's quite clear that:

1) Ubuntu developers have not yet reached consensus on this (based on
the ubuntu-devel thread).

2) Some use cases *will* be impacted by this change (that is not to say
that we shouldn't do it, but I think we do need to consider the plight
of these use cases).

Given the time constraints, I suggest that we ask the tech board to make
a quick decision on this. Without consensus, my understanding of the
code of conduct says that this is what we should do. Who will drive
this?

I'd also ask that, before making the change, we have decent instructions
for 1) impacted users, for the non-default case; and 2) impacted
upstreams, so they know what they should do for the default case where
they know that a tmpfs /tmp won't do. Who can commit to figuring the
details out here?

I propose that there are only really two options to choose from
technically in terms of actually making the change:

1) Make the option available but non-default on cloud images.
2) Make the option available and default on cloud images (so opt-out).

Any more? I presume any option would be via cloud-init userdata?

[Bug 1204542] Re: Feature request for init script: status function

2016-01-20 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

It looks like keepalived has a systemd service definition file now, and
Xenial uses systemd. So presumably this is moot now, as on Ubuntu salt
(I presume) will be able to use systemd's service status?

[Bug 1530233] Re: Please update to puppet major version 4

2016-01-20 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

It looks like there are major changes involved in packaging puppet 4,
which makes me think that this is unlikely to happen in time for
Xenial's release.

In Debian, Stig has invited volunteers with Java packaging experience to
help.

** Summary changed:

- puppet outdated
+ Please update to puppet major version 4
