[Bug 1508470] Re: sshd wont start for 15.10
PS: the bug is reported from a 14.04 system, for a 15.10 system. At the moment of writing, the 15.10 system is not accessible any more, because of sshd not running (or no open port for sshd. May be even a firewall problem). [Bug 1508470] [NEW] sshd wont start for 15.10
Public bug reported: After upgrading to the latest available packages for Ubuntu 15.10 sshd will not start any more. The system aquires an address, but it does not start sshd. [Bug 1026680] Re: bacula director crashing whole system
This is related to postgresql not using passwords if user postgres used to connect to databases. All database upgrade scripts are written to use passwords, but the upgrade script used by ubuntu switches to user postgres, then failing while providing passwords. Other parts of the script use the provided bacula-user then fail, because of missing privileges (these are only needed while upgrading, not for normal operation). After this messy routine ran, you'll have a database more or less working, but breaking bacula at various places, just because the database layout isn't what bacula is awaiting (some upgrades fail because a password is given, where no one is defined, some break because the necessary password isn't provided). While searching for this error I had to find: the scripts provided to create the bacula database are not part of the install. create-bacula- pgsql-db and create-bacula-mysql-db are just missing. I am awaiting these scripts as found in bacula docs. At /etc/bacula/scripts! No where else. At sure not messing around with additional packages to find them. It is bad behaviour not installing these with the bacula-director-mysql- or bacula-director-pgsql-packages. I've already mentioned this before now again finding these scripts not provided. Are there any arguments against providing them?? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bacula in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026680 Title: bacula director crashing whole system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bacula/+bug/1026680/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1026680] Re: bacula director crashing whole system
I did a few additional tests now. Some results: 1. I've installed bacula on a newly set up system (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), with an empty database: works as expected. 2. I've installed bacula on a newly set up system (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS), with an empty database: works as expected. 3. I've installed bacula on a newly set up system (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), then imported an old bacula database: exausts message about wrong database. After migrating the database works as expected. 4. I've installed bacula on a newly set up system (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS), then imported an old bacula database: works as expected. Then migrated to Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 11.10: works as expected. Then migrated to Ubuntu 12.04: crashes after accessing the database to start a backup. 5. I've installed bacula on a newly set up system (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS), then imported an old bacula database: works as expected. Then migrated to Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 11.10: works as expected. Then migrated to Ubuntu 12.04. Wiped the database, then imported an old one, then migrated the database as described on the bacula pages: works as expected. 6. I've installed bacula on a newly set up Ubuntu 10.04, then imported an old database: works as expected. Next thing done was migrating to 10.10, 11.04, 11.10. Testing after every migration. Each time it worked as expected. After migrating to 12.04 bacula crashed (what I awaited). Now I tried to migrate the database as described on the bacula web site. This time without success: various error messages, then one stating the database allready where migrated and nothing changed. For me it looks a lot like migrating to Ubuntu 12.04, changing bacula from 5.0.x to 5.2.x breaks the database, forcing bacula to crash. I did not look at what exactly causes bacula to crash only trying to replicate the path I had taken leading to this crash.
[Bug 1027808] [NEW] dnsmasq doesn't start at system startup
Public bug reported: dnsmasq is configured to start after vmware came up. This worked for a long time, until the last upgrade of upstart. Since then it seems the settings given in the header of the /etc/init.d/dnsmasq-File are plainly ignored. All these not converted jobs are started in alphabetical order. Maybe the behaviour was interduced a long time ago, but did not lead to errors like this, because dnsmasq just sitting there and waiting for interfaces coming up, then using them if configured. Since I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 this isn't the case any more. With Ubuntu 11.10 dnamasq could be started without any interface up. If interfaces started being active they where silently used and dnsmasq was accessible on them. With Ubuntu 12.04 this has changed: dnsmasq requires now all interfaces being active when started, failing if configured interfaces missing. [Bug 1026680] [NEW] bacula director crashing whole system
Public bug reported: I've installed bacula-fd, bacula-sd, bacula-director, and bacula-console on an ubuntu 10.04 system. Bacula working with an PostgreSQL-Database. Upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10, then 11.04 and 11.10 didn't reveal any problems of unstability of bacula or postgres. After upgrading to ubuntu 12.04 LTS the system started to crash randomly. At now I am not able to finish even only one backup cycle without bacula crashing. The host runs, but isn't reachable any more over the network. Trying to log in at console lets me type username and password, but after successfully logging in, I am immedeately logged out again. Running a shell on a terminal directly doesn't work either: if it is started on tty12, you may switch to tty12, but no keypress accepted – the shell is dead. Pinging the server will timeout. The only way to recover: reset it, or, if impossible, power cycle. The system will start again bacula running, but all logs truncated, because of file-system repairs and log replay. No messages telling about why the system crashed. While bacula runs fine doing nothing, it does run fine too, backing up only a few system, it starts crashing backing up lots of systems with a realy huge database. I assume the problem exists with the database exceeding some size, but, since the logs truncated until the last commit, I do not have any information about what part of the system ist resposible for the crashes. [Bug 40189] Re: autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares
Same for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Since this isn't acceptable in a company environment I've stopped migrating to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.04. It is something that has to be fixed before any further upgrades. The whole thing doesn't work not only for Windows XP shares, it doesn't for NFS too. I have to restart autofs after all interfaces are up to make it work. The problem: autofs is started before *all* interfaces are up and running (only waiting on local-loopback). autofs then ignores any interface started afterwards. Two solutions: 1. make autofs start *after* all configured interfaces are up, or 2. make autofs aware of additional interfaces, respecting and using them after additional interfaces are comming up. At the moment autofs has to be restarted if interfaces come and go. If interfaces go it might take a long time until autofs exausts an error message about not being able to mount a share. If interfaces come up later autofs ignores them. Really bad, if autofs is used for automounting user homes or such stuff from centralized servers! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to autofs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40189 Title: autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autofs/+bug/40189/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1007273] Re: autofs does not start automatically after reboot
Yes, I can confirm my servers setup doesn't use network manager or conman. Sometimes autofs is started, sometimes it is not. It seems to depend on how fast the network interfaces are up – if they are up before autofs tries to get names resolved by DNS all is OK and autofs starts. If not, it fails and will not start. With upstart this time depends on which services are started and when. There is no prediction any more which service starts before which other and thus it maybe autofs starts (seldom) or not (most). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to autofs5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007273 Title: autofs does not start automatically after reboot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autofs5/+bug/1007273/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 911317] Re: bacula crashes while starting backup
This keeps on. After some time bacula exhausts all memory, the server starting to kill processes. Sometimes this kills ssh, then the server isn't reachable remotely any more, sometimes this kills other essential processes forcing the server down. At the moment bacula isn't usable any more and badly broken with ubuntu. [Bug 911317] Re: bacula crashes while starting backup
Since migration there are about 1-2 crashes per week. The server is completely down afterwards. Sometimes it helps to CTRL-ALT-ESC, sometimes you'll have to pull the cord (hard reset). It is all times the same: no memory available and killed processes therefore. Since the very same server runs without any problem until bacula-director is started, I assume it's a problem related to bacula-director crunching up all memory. I've tried to give some more memory to the server, but this only helps for short. Soon or later the server crashes again, because of out of memory conditions. Doesn't really matter how much memory the server has. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bacula in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/911317 Title: bacula crashes while starting backup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bacula/+bug/911317/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Install isc-dhsp-server on a host, configure it, then deactivate it, aka make it not to start while the system is booting. Upgrade this server from oneiric to precise. Watch the upgrade break because isc-dhcp-server exausting error 1 (what is quite OK, since it is installed, but meant to not start --- why this case is handled as error --- ??). [Bug 971028] Re: kerberos auth doesn't work because of kerberos server not found
I was looking in the wrong direction, because of kerberos errors, after upgrading from oneiric to precise. This bug is not related to kerberos, but to OpenLDAP. OpenLDAP has two configuration files for authenticating against a ldap-server: /etc/ldap/ldap.conf -- used by nsswitch /etc/ldap.conf -- used by other tools including kerberos, if kerberos data is stored in ldap. Both of these files are overwritten by do-release-upgrade -d, breaking the connection to your ldap-server. In tune kerberos can't read it's database (stored in ldap) any more, while the connection is not broken, because /etc/krb5.conf holds the necessary information. But Informations for authenticating kerberos against ldap are stored in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf and these are lost. The error messages kerberos exausts lead in a false direction. Resoring the files /etc/ldap/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap.conf solves the problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to krb5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971028 Title: kerberos auth doesn't work because of kerberos server not found To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/krb5/+bug/971028/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Both files are overwritten by upgrading via do-release-upgrade -d while a normal upgrade doesn't overwrite them. The file /etc/ldap.conf was replaced by default values, but some values were patched with actual system given ones. These where added at the end of the file. This is one line added: nss_initgroups_ignoreusers backup, bacula, bin, daemon, games, gnats, irc, libuuid, list,lp,mail, man, messagebus, news, openldap, proxy, root, sshd, statd, sync, sys, syslog, uucp ,www-data The file /etc/ldap/ldap.conf was replaced by default values. All changes had to be made again manually. The file: [pre] # # LDAP Defaults # # See ldap.conf(5) for details # This file should be world readable but not world writable. BASEdc=x,dc=de URI ldap://ks1.x.de ldap://ks2.x.de SASL_MECH GSSAPI SIZELIMIT 0 TIMELIMIT 0 DEREF never [/pre] was replaced by [pre] # # LDAP Defaults # # See ldap.conf(5) for details # This file should be world readable but not world writable. #BASE dc=example,dc=com #URIldap://ldap.example.com ldap://ldap-master.example.com:666 #SIZELIMIT 12 #TIMELIMIT 15 #DEREF never # TLS certificates (needed for GnuTLS) TLS_CACERT /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt [/pre] -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openldap in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971056 Title: Upgrade overwrites LDAP config with defaults To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/+bug/971056/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 930551] Re: System with quota enabled hangs after upgrade to 11.10
It doesn't really hang, but recalculates the quota, waiting until this process is done, but doesn't inform the user about what is going on ... :-( On a machine equipped with about 4TiB hd space, this process can take some time (hours). Depending on how many files are stored. After this process ran once, blocking start up, it will run much faster later on, if it was done successfully once (minutes). Quota recalculation does get really slow if volumes above 2T are involved. If I keep them beyond 2T all is OK, but increasing the size makes things bad. I am not sure about if it is a quota problem, or a lvm problem. Maybe both, since I could not find same effects if quota isn't used and volumes are above 2T. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to quota in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930551 Title: System with quota enabled hangs after upgrade to 11.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/quota/+bug/930551/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 930551] Re: System with quota enabled hangs after upgrade to 11.10
Upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 worked. The system came up and ran. Upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 worked. The system does not come up complete. Adding init=/bin/bash to the kernel commandline gives a shell and shows all devices are mounted. trying to boot from this commandline by starting init, makes the system hang again at the very same point. The boot-log does not tell about anything usefull, since it is not written. Removing quota from fstab doesn't matter. The system hangs at the very same point. Removing dm-0-mount from fstab keeps the system hanging. Removing dm-1-mount from fstab keeps the system hanging. Removing dm-0 and dm-1 from fstab brings the system up to login. As soon as dm-0 or dm-1 are entered again into fstab the same problem again. There must be something horribly broken with lvm. It is, indeed possible to remove dm-0 and dm-1 from fstab, boot, then mount both manually, but that isn't a real option for a normaly headless running server!

[Bug 876458] Re: dnsmasq started before all interfaces are up
That's exactly what happens without --bind-interface, interfaces which are configured in dnsmasq but don't exist at startup generate a warning only, and start to work when they are created. [Bug 876458] Re: dnsmasq started before all interfaces are up
Have to be a bit more precise: there is an additional interface not configured at all. This interface only receives and answers dhcp queries. The other interface, which is configured is OK. The problem seems to be interfaces which are not configured and may be up sometimes. As soon as I configure this interface, all is OK again --- no more answered queries on this interface. But I have to configure it not to answer any dhcp-queries. If I leave it unconfigured this Interface will receive dhcp-queries and answer them. The Interface in question is configured: auto vm2 iface vm2 inet static address 192.168.116.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 bridge_fd 3 bridge_hello 2 bridge_maxage 12 bridge_stp off bridge_ports eth1 pre-up brctl addbr $IFACE post-down brctl delbr $IFACE -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dnsmasq in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876458 Title: dnsmasq started before all interfaces are up To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dnsmasq/+bug/876458/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 876458] Re: dnsmasq started before all interfaces are up
H. If this is the reason, how to force dnsmasq not to respond on some interfaces, while listening on all others, with different configurations per interface? Wouldn't it be better to configure dnsmasq even for interfaces not there at startup, and if these interfaces come up take them, if configs match? [Bug 876458] Re: dnsmasq started before all interfaces are up
Yes, that's right, but there are interfaces not started from /etc/network/interfaces or Network Manager: * VMware Workstation / Player installs interfaces starting VMware daemons * VirtualBox installs interfaces * KVM may install an additional bridge * some VPN software installs tun/tap interfaces or virtual interfaces up on an existing interface As far as I could find: * VMware is started after dnsmasq, leading to a situation dhcp via dnsmasq works, but DNS doesn't * VirtualBox creates interfaces and bridges on the fly --- sometimes dhcp works, sometimes it doesn't; DNS did not work always * KVM interfaces are started concurently with dnsmasq, because kvm is started after network is up. Sometimes you'll get full functionality, sometimes you do not. If KVM starts its own dnsmasq both daemons challenge with each other about whom answers dhcp --- sometimes the VM is assigned the one address, sometimes the other. DNS may work or may not. * VPN: sometimes dnsmasq binds dhcp to VPN, sometimes it doesn't. Either way: it leads into trouble. To make dnsmasq work with dhcp, dns (and, if configured tftp) you'll have to restart the daemon each time a new interface it shall bind to is started. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dnsmasq in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876458 Title: dnsmasq started before all interfaces are up To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dnsmasq/+bug/876458/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
