[Bug 1374166] Re: Document how to add swap space on Azure resource disk

2015-05-31 Thread David Frank
So I ended up on this page and found the conclusion is azure cloud-init
doesn't support adding a swap through configuration, is that true?

Furthermore why isn't there a canonical doc or blog post that explain
the correct way to add swap for Ubuntu VM on Azure?

I have seen examples that modify /etc/fstab, and examples that modify
/etc/waagent.conf, as well as trying to use CustomData.

I have read both:

-
https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-linux-agent-user-guide/

Yet I am still not sure how could I edit my configuration to create a
swap through cloud-init on next boot. If this is fixed and released,
then please help point me and whoever comes next to the right doc.

Think it has to do with the password dialog for mysql. if u enter a new
password it attemtps to overwrite the old, and for some reason fails. At

[Bug 1262853] Re: Apache2 config file not set up correctly during install

2014-01-21 Thread Frank Perreault
I appreciate the replies to the bug. I would like to state, just in
case the point was missed, that apache would not run after performing a
fresh server install. Whether it was because the service was not
started by the install or it is a misconfigured config file, it doesn't
matter. It has always run out of the box in previous Ubuntu versions
and it should now. If it doesn't, then it's a bug in my book.

[Bug 1262853] [NEW] Apache2 config file not set up correctly during install

2013-12-19 Thread Frank Perreault
Public bug reported:

I did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 13.10. During the install I
installed OpenSSH and LAMP using the checkbox selections. After the
install completed I ran "apache2 -V" and I proceeded to get a bunch of
config file errors. They are

Config variable ${APACHE_LOCK_DIR} is not defined
Config variable ${APACHE_PID_FILE} is not defined
Config variable ${APACHE_RUN_USER} is not defined
Config variable ${APACHE_LOCK_GROUP} is not defined
Config variable ${APACHE_LOG_DIR} is not defined

AH00526: Syntax error on line 74 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf:
Invalid Mutex directory in argument file:${APACHE_LOCK_DIR}

I expected to see no errors when performing the "apache2 -V" command. I
appears that a file that defines these variables is missing.

Note: when installing Ubuntu Server 12.04.3 it installs correctly with
no errors.

[Bug 1210270] [NEW] nmbd needs restarted on server reboot

2013-08-08 Thread kyle frank
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version = 12.04
samba version = 2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2.6 0

I set up a samba server as a Domain Member Server with AD authentication. It
works fine except that when you restart the server samba services do not work
and sudo commands hang for ~5min. A little debugging revealed that nmbd needed
to be restarted before samba would work and to stop sudo commands from hanging:

kfrank@tserver007:~$ time sudo su -
root@tserver007:~# smbclient tserver007\\base -U kfrank
Enter kfrank's password:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED
did you forget to run kinit?
root@tserver007:~# exit
logout

real5m29.158s
user0m0.220s
sys 0m0.292s
kfrank@tserver007:~$

I'm not even sure why it is asking me to run a kerberos command. I
don't use kerberos in my build.

Attached are my smb.conf and level 10 smbd and nmbd log files.

I did a little more debugging and if I comment out the "wins server"
line in smb.conf sudo commands don't hang anymore. Unfortunately I need
that config to connect to the AD server.

This issue kind of relates with

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/596064

which points out that there is a race condition between smbd and nmbd at
startup. More specifically that the creation of /var/run/samba wasn't
being created before nmbd starts. There's a lot of suggestions and
fixes that worked for other people so I spent the better part of today
messing around with /etc/init/nmbd.conf in hopes that nmbd would wait
for smbd to finish starting up before starting. I've tried changing the
start on parameter to

start on (started smbd)

which didn't result in anything different after a reboot. Also tried
adding a

mkdir -p /var/run/samba

at the very beginning of the pre-start script. This worked in testing
and even had it on the production server for a couple of days but after
a while the same problem occurred on reboot. Tried it without the -p
flag and got the same results. The only thing that has gotten
consistent results so far is to add a

sleep 1

before the pre-start script begins. Now samba works on reboot and sudo
commands don't hang! Only problem is that the sleep command prevents
the pid file for nmbd to not be generated. So if I feel like doing
anything with the nmbd service I'm SOL.

root@tserver007:/etc/init.d# service nmbd stop
stop: Unknown job: nmbd
root@tserver007:/etc/init.d# service nmbd status
status: Unknown job: nmbd
root@tserver007:/etc/init.d# service nmbd start
start: Unknown job: nmbd
root@tserver007:/etc/init.d# service nmbd restart
stop: Unknown job: nmbd
start: Unknown job: nmbd
root@tserver007:/etc/init.d#

So I decided to get rid of the sleep command. Currently I just have nmbd
restart in rc.local which I know is a bad solution. Please advise on a better
one.

[Bug 1083158] [NEW] package does not put startup script in /etc/init.d/ and also lacks an rc script

2012-11-26 Thread John Frank
Public bug reported:

Converting this question into a bug report:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zookeeper/+question/215278

I understand how to make a start|stop script :-) And there is
already such a script in the package.

My question is __why__ does the package not put it in the "right" place?

And why does the package not have an rc script?

If these are missing for no particular reason, we'll build a better
package and would be happy to contribute it.

If there is some logic for not making the package more completely
"debianized", could someone educated us about that logic?

Thanks,
John

Crash occurred during an package upgrade in Update Manager... I thought
it was caused by the length of time it takes to stop the squid daemon on
Ubuntu. When the upgrade finished (a couple minutes later), squid
started normally and appears fine since.

[Bug 614322] Re: libvirt not recognizing NUMA architecture

2010-09-28 Thread Frank
You can easily compile the latest libvirt version yourself:

aptitude install build-essential, libxml2-dev, libgnutls-dev, libdevmapper-dev,
libparted0-dev, libvirt-dev
./configure –prefix=/usr –exec-prefix=/usr –libdir=/usr/lib
–includedir=/usr/include && make && make install

There is a configure option "--with-numa", but I didn't use ist. libvirt
recognizes the numa cells without this option.

This improves the network performance, but it's still slower than KVM on
CentOS and still much slower than Xen.

Yes, there is no cable in that ethernetport. Are you really 1000%
sure? Because if I bring it down and my bridge stops, I will have to
travel 150km to go and fix it :)

I know, I'm using an LTS release because of the support etc. I'm
planning to upgrade, but I was first testing with this VM. It might
give me problems with the production VM if I upgrade the host system,
and I don't want that (neither do my clients :P). So I am planning to
upgrade, but currently don't dare to do it. In a few weeks, my server
will need to be moved to a new datacenter, so I might then do the
upgrade (easier to debug etc when you're sitting next to it).

[Bug 626662] [NEW] KVM images losing connectivity w/bridged network

2010-08-30 Thread Frank Groeneveld
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

I'm opening a new bug as per Serge Hallyn's request in bug #584048.

I experience problems with one of my KVM virtual machines. I have a host
running Hardy LTS with the KVM backport ppa (1:84+dfsg-
0ubuntu12.1~rc5ppa). The host is using a bridged network with 2 eth's
(only 1 is physically connected) and 2 tap devices (for both of my VMs).
The virtual machine that works without a problem is running Hardy LTS as
well. The machine with problems is running Lucid LTS.

The machines are started as:

screen -t production kvm -m 2048m -nographic -drive
file=production.raw,if=virtio,boot=on -net
nic,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:xx,model=virtio -net
tap,ifname=tap0,script=no,downscript=no -smp 2

screen -t development kvm -m 1024m -nographic -drive
file=development.raw,if=virtio,boot=on -net
nic,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:yy,model=virtio -net
tap,ifname=tap1,script=no,downscript=no

Development is the machine giving me problems. After a while (less than
24 hours) of no network activity, the machine loses it's connectivity.
We're currently keeping it "running" by sending a ping request every
minute and this seems to work, but the network seems pretty slow
sometimes.

[Bug 584048] Re: kvm images losing connectivity w/bridged network

2010-08-26 Thread Frank Groeneveld
Hi Serge,

Thanks for your time!

The problem is not with the mac addresses (at least not for me). As I reported
earlier:
> For me, these are not related, because I'm not modifying the bridge
> when the connectivity is lost. As long as there is steady network
> trafic (for example a ping every minute), the connectivity is not
> lost. As soon as I stop this, the connectivity will be lost within a
> few hours.

Also note that my situation is like this:
I have a host running Hardy with a bridge with two eth's and two tap devices. I
have two kvm guests: one is Hardy as well and one is Lucid. Only the Lucid
machines loses connectivity, the Hardy machine works fine. In KVM I have
hardcoded the mac addresses (due to an issue of years before where both
machines could get the same mac address).

[Bug 614322] Re: libvirt not recognizing NUMA architecture

2010-08-09 Thread Frank
Hi there,

I used the latest RHEL6 Beta with libvirt-0.8.1-13.el6.x86_64 and
the latest CentOS 5.5 with libvirt-0.6.3-33.el5_5.1.

I tried Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04 and both show about 50% of the performance that
RHEL and CentOS do.
This is a serious problem. No company, that wants to virtualize applications
that need the performance, would choose kvm on Ubuntu as platform this way.
If Ubuntu wants to be an enterprise ready distribution, they have to compete
with RHEL, Xen, ESXi and things like that.

Cheers,
Frank

Re: [Bug 584048] Re: kvm images losing connectivity w/bridged network

2010-07-27 Thread Frank Groeneveld
For me, these are not related, because I'm not modifying the bridge
when the connectivity is lost. As long as there is steady network
trafic (for example a ping every minute), the connectivity is not
lost. As soon as I stop this, the connectivity will be lost within a
few hours.

[Bug 584048] Re: kvm images losing connectivity w/bridged network

2010-06-18 Thread Frank Groeneveld
I'm seeing this issue as well. I have a Hardy host system, with bridged
network. I start a lucid 64 bit kvm with virtio and a tap device (which
is in a bridge already) and after a while, the network seems down (from
outside, no ssh access etc). However, when I run a ping from within the
kvm instance, the network works again.

[Bug 448600] Re: My machine froze while installing Sun JDK 6

2009-10-14 Thread Frank Zimmerman
This morning, I encountered the exact same error and consequences as
posted above while trying to install the Sun Java runtime and plugin.
I'm using the 9.10 beta, i386 version. I just noticed that I
accidentally have Firefox 3.0 installed as well as 3.5. I'm not sure if
that could have affected it. The unfortunate thing was that I had about
20 programs queued up for installation in the Software Center and now
they are all gone. It would be nice if this program had remembered the
list in event of crashes, and just continued installing when you started
it up next time.

[Bug 343870] Re: php-cli segmentation fault with mysql extension

2009-08-23 Thread Frank Schubert
As the last libmysqlclient15off update (5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10.2) still
seem to contains this bug, I'll try to explain (repeat) the description of how
to test for the bug as in:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=524366

In short: Compare the output of

while [ 1 ]; do echo 'http://people.debian.org/~seanius/mysql/513204/amd64 ./
and the problem went away.

Let me know if I can help in any way to resolve this.

Thanks for your work!

[Bug 416318] Re: Apache doesn't honor existing bootscripts

2009-08-20 Thread Frank Groeneveld
Does it matter? I'm using the newest available version on Jaunty, but it
has happened to me before on all the older releases, I just didn't take
the time to report the bug.

[Bug 416318] [NEW] Apache doesn't honor existing bootscripts

2009-08-20 Thread Frank Groeneveld
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

On my desktop system I have installed apache for testing purposes.
However, I don't want it to start on boot, so I used update-rc.d to
remove the apache service. However, after upgrading apache, these files
are always installed again, meaning I have to update-rc.d also.

** Affects: apache2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Re: [Bug 105457] Re: mysqd_safe high cpu usage

2009-06-03 Thread Frank Groeneveld
We already know that the bug is triggered by something that restart
the mysql process (On my server it sometimes even occurs when I run
/etc/init.d/mysql restart)

How come this bugs importance is set to low? My virtual host is unusable
when this bug happens and sometimes even apache starts failing because
of the high load.
