[Bug 1011307] Re: dig(1) says that dig queries servers listed in resolv.conf, but this is not always the case
Yes, I also have no objection to the behavior. I think the man page could be tweaked to be a little. Something like the following. - If no server argument is provided, dig consults /etc/resolv.conf and queries the name servers listed there. + If no server argument is provided, dig consults /etc/resolv.conf and if an IPv4 or IPv6 address is found there (depending upon which transport has been selected), queries the name server at that address. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bind9 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1011307 Title: dig(1) says that dig queries servers listed in resolv.conf, but this is not always the case To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bind9/+bug/1011307/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1011307] Re: dig(1) says that dig queries servers listed in resolv.conf, but this is not always the case
I consider this as being a decent behavior, as dig does not find any IPv6 servers in /etc/resolv.conf and it has to use IPv6 only to connect. Using 127.0.0.1 as nameserver would mean ignoring the -6 option. If not too difficult, it would make sense not to query any servers and just throw a more self-explanatory response, but the current behavior is acceptable.
