Try using 
 passdb backend = smbpasswd 
in smb.conf . 

To change your password as root use:
 smbpasswd -a root

We are closing this bug report because it seems to be caused by a bad
configuration value rather than being a true bug, as described in the
previous comments. Please reopen it if you think it is wrong, and don't
hesitate to submit bug reports in the future. To reopen the bug report
you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change
the Status back to New. Thanks again!
