Same problem here. It happened the last time samba was updated, and now it's happening. I experienced the same issue. I tried a combination of methods to resolve the file. First I looked at the diff, but I don't normally read diffs, so I looked for another way. The 3 way diff seemed to have more relevant information, and I was ok with what it returned, so I tried the 3 way merge. I lost the dialog at that time ( I think it crashed ), but I think another one popped up. So, I tried to open a new command shell. The application APPEARED to stop responding, and went dark, as non- responding apps can when running in compiz. However, on closer examination, there was now and interactive # prompt in the details of the update application. After exiting that prompt, the app was live again, and I I told it to just keep the old file. Not much info in there. Could you also use the default configuration file and tell us if you can reproduce the error. Could you please add the line set -x near the top of the file /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba-common.postinst then run the command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure samba-common This is very likely an issue with your configuration of samba. Similar thing -- prompted for changes in smb.conf. The side-by-side display of changes was useless since it doesn't use a monospace font. When I chose the 3-way merge, the thing borked. The same text in my upgrade terminal window. This is during the Installing the upgrades portion. The progress bar shows pretty close to 100%. Just below it is the text Installed brltty-x11 The entire window is disabled/insensitive, so I cannot copy-paste the tex in the terminal. I have a modified smb.conf. I did the diff, but found it confusing, so I requested a side by side diff. That didn't do as requested, it just showed the plain diff again. So I chose the option to run a shell to examine the situation, but nothing happened. In fact my whole system update stopped at that point. Running ps ax I found the bash that was apparently blocked and killed that. A panel popped up saying the samba post install script had failed, and went on to list a whole bunch of other packages that also failed - notably wine and ubuntu-desktop. The upgrade continued on, and I'll see how broken it is now.
