I waited till the patch was in for lucid till I used upgrade manager. By detault, it now found 1:1.2.9-1ubuntu6.5, and it worked like a charm. the new package installed nice, without changing my configuration so it looks like this patch fixes the bug. Note: I get standard errors about an unconfigured nsd3 everytime I use apt which is related to another bug. Here is the patch that fixes this issue. Instead of moving backup file, it just copies it.
