Re: (re)Developing the Ubuntu Studio Site

2010-08-30 Thread Chris Jones
I'm working an another mockup too based on a modified Drupal theme, but
haven't finished it yet. But here's what I come up with today. Colors
and theme based on and around Cory's early Maverick concept logo.

As suggested by Scott, the most obvious of tasks should have big buttons
and big clear text. Obviously, final text, size and fonts could be
changed and altered to suit and appeal, but you get the general idea.
What to put on the front page, well, is up to whoever has the final say
I guess.

Or with something similar to what we have on the current
UbuntuStudio.org site.
Or perhaps a YouTube Video as suggested and demonstrated by Scott's
mockup.

All comments and feedback welcome.

Just thought that I'd clear up the fact that I never posted any previous
finished work links. In fact, I don't even remember mentioning them. ;-)

Sorry, I had some weird shit happening when posting links due to the
characters I was using on my ftp server. I've changed the link
characters directly on the server so it works now.

Third time lucky! See below...

Yes it seems my previous links did not post properly into the email.
Sorry, try these ones...

Again, these are layouts only. Currently have Inkscape and Gimp open

I like it. Although the color scheming and themeing needs work. But the
layout is good and I do agree with having the most used and wanted items
clearly visible and in the users' face.

My layout examples are only proposals of layout. Still working on an
actual website example mockup which as mentioned, hopefully I'll be able
to upload and link this afternoon.

My layouts are very traditional in appearance which I also thought may
be of some benefit due to ease-of-use and navigation for particularly
new users/members. But I guess we'll leave it up to feedback from the
community and fellow Ubuntu Studio users.

Here's a few I have so far.

http://home.comcen.com.au/foxmulder881/development/ubuntu_studio-revamp%
5Bweb%5D/layout/mockup_example_1a.png

http://home.comcen.com.au/foxmulder881/development/ubuntu_studio-revamp%

http://home.comcen.com.au/foxmulder881/development/ubuntu_studio-revamp%

http://home.comcen.com.au/foxmulder881/development/ubuntu_studio-revamp%
5Bweb%5D/layout/mockup_example_3.png

Obviously, they're not to any scale and are designed to give a rough
idea of where things could be placed.

Also, something else to consider, if we are going down the route of
Drupal, what version will we using?

I'm also hoping to get a test site up and running this week on my web
server so I can tinker with a few things.

Cheers

Okay, here is my mock-up:
http://www.fossmusicproject.org/public/ubuntustudio-website-mockup.png

These is just ideas thrown out to see what sticks. Or possibly inspire
someone.

Although I do have to admit that I really like the immediate accessibility
of the button on the right side. They are big (perhaps too big admittedly)
and have the things that people are going to want most of the times and want
them NOW without having to trawl through menus or buttons.

But again, this is open to feedback, suggestions, criticisms, plagiarism, et
al

No worries Scott. I'm also working on some layout mockups as we speak in
OO.o Draw.

I've got a couple of things to do this morning but hopefully can
complete and upload them for viewing this afternoon and get some
feedback from the community.

Regarding, theme and colors of the site, I think if we try and tie it in
with the logos that Cory K has created, that would be great.

Anyway, we'll talk about it after we've seen some mockups and design
proposals.

I like the ideas Cory. And I do think they'd tie in nicely with the new
site once redeveloped. I'm working on some mockups with the other fellas
as we speak. So hopefully we could get it to tie in nicely with your
logo concepts theme wise.

I like the effect of the second one better than the first. With the
second one, it's too sharp and requires the softness of the first.
Perhaps use the same first image but just add the tagline above it for a
logo with tagline. But still keep them as 2 different images. Oh and I
think you should ditch the 10.10 text. I don't think it's relevant for
the long-term and is only going to cause disruption and confusion over a
period of time among members old and new.

Chris,

I was not able to get to it over the weekend, but I did manage to spend
fifteen minutes with Inkscape at work and created one. Keep in mind that I
literally spent fifteen minutes doing this, it's not terribly pretty, but it
serves as a vehicle for the concept.

When I get home tonight I'll upload it and post a link.
