Re: [ubuntu-studio-devel] Introduction.

2015-05-31 Thread Grant Burton
I got in as root, I just had to create a root password first.

to get my TV card to work I need to do this

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/saa7134.conf

options saa7134 card=43 tuner=69

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/saa7134.conf
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

card=43
tuner=69

in other versions of Studio there was no need to be root but in Wily yes.

The TV works fine but. I don't use the TV I use the s-video to
connect my camera. Now the s-video don't work, nor dose the other video
input.

I changed my hard disk and installed studio 14 again and I got everything
to work on the first try and there was no need to be root so I think
there is something different in this version that prevents video input.

Also my firewire Camera don't work nor dose any USB webcam.

There should be no need to enable root in the situation mentioned in this
thread. Or if there were a traditional root account. I test jack as root
occasionally for permissions troubleshooting. I always find a way to
properly implemented running software without needing to enable a root
account or run things as root.

"There is no root?" Technically that's incorrect, there is always the root
user of the system, even if the root account is disabled for terminal/console
login. Root login in disabled by default in Ubuntu, though that can easily
be changed. I have heard reports of people having to log in root to get
audio applications to use realtime due to various bugs, I would recommend
that any machine used this way never be networked.

Solution to what? There is no root. You can have a root terminal many ways.
sudo -s for example. What are you trying to accomplish? You should try and
run as little as root as possible.

The big change from 14.04 to 15.04 is upstart to systemd. Debian is also
switching from init to systemd (Ubuntu's upstream) and there are some
privilege kinds of things that may have changed. You may find some hints
in the "linux audio user" mailing list archives that may apply to video HW
as well.
