[ubuntu-studio-devel] Feature Freeze for 19.04

2019-02-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Hi everyone,

As you may or may not know, Feature Freeze for the 19.04 development
cycle is coming up on Thursday (21st). We have a number of packages
that need to get pushed through, namely:

carla
grub2-themes-ubuntustudio

which are brand-new packages. Carla is at version 1.9.13 (2.0-RC3).
When Carla gets uploaded, we should drop Patchage in favor of Carla as
Patchage is no longer developed.

Additionally, we have updates for the following packages:

ubuntustudio-icon-theme
ubuntustudio-installer
ubuntustudio-default-settings
ubuntustudio-controls
ubuntustudio-look
ubuntustudio-menu

Hopefully after this release cycle I'll be able to apply for MOTU so
that we can work a little more autonomously

Today, after asking Len about it, I switched -icon-theme to base off of
the ePapirus icon theme (from the papirus-icon-theme package) for three
reasons:

1) The Xubuntu icon theme is based on the Elementary icon theme, which
changed from its more blue color to beige. This didn't blend well with
our Numix Blue GTK theme.
2) Papirus has a very modern aesthetic that blends extremely well with
our Numix Blue theme.

I went with ePapirus because the standard Papirus theme from the
package blended a little too well with our dark panel.

I wouldn't mind hearing some feedback on this changed. It's one that is
easily reverted if necessary. I realize that icon themes can be a
touchy subject, so I understand if there are disagreements to this
matter.

So, in summary, we need to do what we can to get these packages moved
through, and let me know what you think about the icons.

Best regards,
Erich

Good.

There's really quite a combination of problems here, and it is a very
touchy subject on both sides. Either way, I feel as though remove Calf
altogether and removing it from the Audio Handbook is throwing out the
baby with the bathwater.

No, don't remove it, As I said their are people who like the way it sounds
even if it is not the best sounding stuff out there. I would just not put
it down in the manual as my first choice or a preferable choice even.
Better to give a list of packages in reverse aphabetical order ;) and let
the user choose.

Is there a bug report for this? I couldn't find one.

Not true. Only one of the problems comes from bad packaging. There are
others. Some people find the DSP problems artistic though I can't imagine
anyone finding 1000db outputs artisitic (or helpful to ones speakers). So DSP
aside, these plugins even when properly packaged, do sometimes cause

different version (gtk2 vs gtk3). My understanding is that the Calf team

I hopefully have a fix, and it is waiting for sponsorship. We will have
to wait and see if it fixes it, because I have no way to test on the
ppc64el architecture.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-devel] Audio Handbook

Hi Ralf

Your message was a little long, so I snipped the entire thing. I hope
what I write here addresses it.

The entire problem with the calf plugins stems from bad packaging of
the calf-ladspa plugins, which comes in the lmms package and was never
meant to be exposed to the rest of th esystem. bacically, Ardour will
crash if it even detects those plugins. The ladspa plugins were made
specifically for LMMS and were not ever meant to be exposed to the rest
of the system, which is what is causing a huge conflict with the more
modern LV2 plugins.

https://github.com/calf-studio-gear/calf/issues/181

https://github.com/calf-studio-gear/calf/issues/134

Additionally, the Calf project had a major release back in November
2017 with 0.90.0, but the maintainer of the Debian package MIA, I took
on the job of packaging it. Since then, a major issue popped-up which
was indeed causing issues with Ardour (and probably the biggest source
or their gripes) and was fixed with the release of 0.90.1, which is
discussed in #181 above.

I got the packaging done and Ross got it upstream into Debian. 0.90.1
is being included with Ubuntu Studio 19.04, and I'm considering pulling
the package to backport it to 18.04 in our backports PPA.

Yet the problem with LMMS using calf-ladspa as a dependency persists,
and while Ross was able to fix the Debian package upstream, there have
been some build issues with the ppc64 build, which Ross is working on
to correct, before it can land in 19.04. For now, LMMS has been removed
from Ubuntu Studio, and while we would like to add it back, we have to
give it lower priority since it uses a depricated plugin format that is
conflicting with other parts of the system.

So, all that to say your requests to remove Calf Studio Gear from
Ubuntu Studio or to remove that piece of the Audio Handbook are denied.
We have worked way too hard to fix the problems rather than cover them
up or to take on any anti-Calf policy as Ardour has done.

Thank you,
Erich

Re: [ubuntu-studio-devel] Audio Handbook

2019-02-19 Thread Ralf Mardorf
Hi,

I found something that I don't want to edit without your agreement.

"Having tried out a few of these tools, my favorites list ended up with
mostly standard Calf plugins. They come with an intuitive GUI and get
the job done." -
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/AudioHandbook/MixingMastering

It doesn't make sense, if each editor would start to edit this to
something different. There were a lot of discussions related to Calf
plugins, perhaps the AudioHandbook should take them into account, for
example
http://lists.ardour.org/pipermail/ardour-users-ardour.org/2018-November/date.html.

At the moment I can't say anything about multiband compressor
replacements, however, much important for mastering is an equalizer,
while for mastering a graphical equalizer could be wanted for the
stereo sum, I unfortunately can't say much about Linux graphical
equalizers. Fortunately I'm comfortable with a parametric equalizer for
the stereo sum, too. Per track British EQing, IOW a parametric EQ
anyway is the way to go.

My recommendation is to remove

"Having tried out a few of these tools, my favorites list ended up with
mostly standard Calf plugins. They come with an intuitive GUI and get
the job done."

completely and to replace it with a hint to Fons' parametric EQ
https://packages.ubuntu.com/cosmic/fil-plugins, since this is the only
Linux FLOSS EQ I ever used, that is usable. A lot of other EQ plugins
do not really do, what they should do and I'm without doubts a lot of
other users confirm this experience.

For those who prefer a fancy GUI, there is Robin's EQ based upon
Fons' EQ.

https://packages.ubuntu.com/cosmic/x42-plugins

https://x42-plugins.com/x42/x42-eq

Perhaps the Handbook could mention:

"Some plugins are known to cause issues with some hosts or they are
known for fishy accuracy. A much used parametric EQ known to do what it
should do, is provided by the package "fil-plugins" or with a GUI, by
the package "x42-plugins".

This is what I would write, it's missing a hint to a recommended
compressor, graphic EQ and limiter, but at least it's IMO a good
recommendation for a parametric EQ.

Regards,
Ralf
