Hi Len, You are right. My test machine only has motherboard sound, and a USB device (Alesis iO2) which is very portable (but only 2 inputs at a time).
Most of the time it "just works", and it is only when I fiddle that I get myself into unusual states :-) But I will test and report back. Incidently, we should probably create a suite of manual tests we could point testers at between now and 20.04 (LTS): http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/ We have not used it for a few releases, but it could be resurrected.
