[ubuntu-studio-devel] Kali Distro

2019-05-08 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Greetings!

I must recognize i have been away some time trying out a different
distribution which proved itself way more stable for navigation and
everyday tasks than Ubuntu Studio, beyond media production itself. I even
tried to customize a Linux Distribution from scratch over it, adding media
production software, unsuccessfully.

I refer to Kali Linux Distribution, a Penetration
Testing distribution also based on Debian which meant a lot more stability
about networking to me, which i use a lot. It's repository is somehow
blocked. I intended upgrading and/or adding packages without fruitful
results. I mention it because i would love to have the same stability i
enjoy on it within our Ubuntu Linux distribution, although i myself could
not grasp even upgrading packages into it without having to reinstall from
scratch a few times, until i simply surrendered stating i don't seem to be
prepared enough for the task. There is plenty of documentation on the site
about configuring a custom distribution from it. I'm sorry if this is not
the place to contribute in this way, but i really would appreciate somebody
taking a look at it as a possible core to media production distro, which i
tried myself without positive results. It has not substituted at all Ubuntu
Studio distribution for media production and design, but switching from
distro to distro sometimes turns awkward as i would rather avoid reseting
and bootstrapping each time a change of functions is needed. Sorry again if
there's no disposition about it or I misplaced the scope.

Greetings.

Maybe this issue is well beyond scope and properly adverted and solved,
nevertheless, until now it remained as an unknown issue to me such that i
warn and provide insight information as found.

[ubuntu-studio-devel] Artsy testing

2018-02-14 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Greetings.

After trying Artsy system, everything seems alright with the exception of
long standing hard disk activity which drops responsive behavior when web
browsing, even just closing the web browser, mouse and keyboard drop
functionality for long standing terms while there should be no connection
between driver's requests, hard disk activity should take a different
interruption request than mouse activity and keyboard activity, and it
probably does, even video memory seems affected as there is no response
from periferials devices, not even to switch between windows, they simply
freeze or slow down heavily. There is deactivation of swap memory (sudo
swapoff --all), web browser is configured with 0 KB cache and no files are
deliveratedly being accessed from any application, there is not any
application loading in memory at the time so unresponsive behavior coming
from hard disk activity seems unjustified. I am running Artsy over an AMD
Dual-Core E-450 with 2 GB RAM, SATA Disk Drive and 100BaseT NIC over 10Mbps
connection.

2017-09-29 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Greetings.

I write to acknowledge of an apparently important issue concerning
long-term kernel, addressed more completely at
http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2017/Sep/72, issue which apparently
makes un-patched kernels vulnerable to priviledge scalation. Such kernels
could include, although not necessarily, ubuntu-base and ubuntu-studio
kernels. Thanks in advance.

I take the advantage to suggest the inclusion of arpon
 service natively on ubuntu-base and
ubuntu-studio kernels providing stronger security measures about ARP
poisoning and ARP spoofing vulnerabilities commonly found due to protocol
issue concerns. I myself have found quite better network performance by
executing arpon daemon services within each network node, for each
interface, including lo.

I have not been able to test Artful yet, nevertheless ISO file has been
already downloaded and will be tested by me as soon as possible, providing
feedback at availability.

Happy weekend.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-devel] ubuntu-studio-devel Digest, Vol 123, Issue 9

2017-08-01 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Thank you, Ovens. The fact is my knowledge about the process lacks the
proper sources where to start from, to get to proceed myself. If there are
any suggestions where i could start investigating about it, it would be
grateful. Thanks.

I recently started to configure uck (ubuntu customization kit)
distributions through shell interactivity directly, having some issues with
configuration stability. As i understand it, the process has to do mainly
with compiling the sources for the proper processor at "installation time"
by configuring the compiler and the linker to make use of the processor's
configuration, specifically. If there is any known way i can instruct
myself into such matters more profoundly, for instance: how to configure
the compiling process through an script which chooses compiler's
configuration at glance over the system's configuration before the
installation process is done(?). I remember we used to compile from source,
back in the nineties with Red Hat from 4 to 5 adding features at
requirement and i am available for the task myself, the fact is i am "out
of shape" about it and my knowledge about the now-a-days process seem to
change after each distribution version, so i would like to refresh such
knowledge to get in the mood and do it. I thought there would be graphic
ways (GUI) to do the configuration through a front end for the task, in the
uck or something. I just seem to have missed the way at some point.

Sorry if my requirement seemed out of context and outdated.

[ubuntu-studio-devel] Legacy Support

2017-07-30 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Greetings, once again.

I would not like to appear insisting nor recurrent in sight of my previous
digests, yet there is another issue i would like to address, as i feel it
is our concern as developers, even if my input has been few about the
overall development process. The fact is, since 12.04, there has been a
strong lack of legacy support for the outdated hardware, which i believe
remains as one of the main motivation for Linux distributions all over.
While there seems consistent that Microsoft and Apple provide the ultimate
technology support for their standards and drop support to those appliances
which no longer produce or rely on, the main line of action about Linux
developers, administrators and users remain about recovering, updating and
making use of legacy hardware all around the globe, which seem to me have
been overlooked by the Ubuntu Studio distribution since 12 or 13 and above.
It is understandable to provide a common ground for compatibility and keep
providing downloading links for the previous versions which have been
relying on deprecated hardware and configurations, yet the legacy support
which characterizes Linux ideal of working seems to be overlooked while the
distribution advances forward to brand new hardware, appearing there are
commercial linkage to hardware manufacturers and sellers, while should not
be the case. This is my personal appreciation as i happen to rely on legacy
hardware to keep providing myself for computational and informatic services
while the technology race goes on as fast as it wants to. I believe there
is strong resonance on the matter all through the community and it should
be noticed and taken on account on future versions, even if it seems to
require heavier code

(when actually is usually lighter code which is required to provide for
legacy support)
 and more disk (iso) space.

There should be a way to provide x86 support natively while providing x64
upgrading on the go as detected, as needed or as stated. It would allow to
remain lighter ISO's, support legacy hardware with lower performance than
commercially available and upgrade to a more recent configuration as
required. I would like to configure such code myself as i consider i am a
great developer and could (and should) provide myself with such
requirements as needed, yet my knowledge on the procedure is poor at the
time and it would take longer to study and practice all the way through the
learning process than to proceed to ask for someone else who does knows,
works and relies on the procedure on a periodic basis. As such, i formally
ask the development team to address my request into such matter, as
possible. Thanks in advance. Good day.

[ubuntu-studio-devel] Ubuntu DEV12/DEVE

2017-07-26 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Greetings,

I took the liberty to branch an Ubuntu Studio distribution under my own
requirements and services while hosted in my server account, it already
packs up with bind9 (Local DNS Service) and squid3 (Local Proxy Service)
both activated at glance, already sets with rkhunter (root-kit hunting
application) and lynis (auditing tool); i named it DEV12 (DEVE) after the
Ubuntu Studio 12.03.5 distro which it uses for the core, providing legacy
support. Ubuntu DEV12/DEVE also introduces a set of development and
electronic application suite for the overall software designer and
developer, including uck (ubuntu customizing kit) as an apt shell script
extension. Enjoy!

[ubuntu-studio-devel] Open Media Database

2017-07-05 Thread Helios Martinez Dominguez
Greetings again!

I just came up with the idea that we could (and should) add, at some point,
as viable as it can be, a Media Database, pretty much similar to the
Software Center, yet specifically for open source media projects, be it
film projects, audio projects, 3D projects, etc. Including from full source
projects (raw files, sessions, etc.) to final render/mix only projects
(movies, songs, etc.). It could be an entire new way to explore the
operating system, learn directly from project creation the overall creative
process and enjoy open source driven projects directly from the platform,
both motivating the usage of free software (specifically Ubuntu Studio) and
promoting the free software productions world wide, specially most
representative. Thanks for your time and consideration!

There are several reasons why experienced computer users likely don't
use Unity. One of the famous examples is this one:

On 7 December 2012, Richard Stallman said that Ubuntu contains spyware
and should not be used by free software supporters. Jono Bacon rebuked
him; he said that Ubuntu responded and implemented many of the
 requirements the community found important.[77][78][79]

None of Ubuntu's official derivatives (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.)

towards becoming a Debian Maintainer once I have more experience. I am also
happy to do packaging work for Ubuntu. Of course any of this sort of work
requires a sponsor. Hopefully, I can also help liaise with the Debian
Multimedia team (I monitor their lists and upload the occasional patch).

I am typing this on a standard Ubuntu 14.04 installation, and I have
Ubuntu Studio 14.04 installed on my music machine. I am happy to help
with bug triage testing patches, but I don't have a lot of hardware to
test with, so at the moment it is really only the software side of things I
 can work with.

Unfortunately, my time for this is very constrained. Short tasks, or
longer ones that I can chip away at (bit by bit) are the best.

 Regards,

 Ross

Hmm I clicked around a lot during the day and didn't get a crash. I
suppose I must have missed the wrong clicks. I love the installer plugin,
finally to be able to not have to clean up after installation!

with the following facts and assumptions:

jack is *already* included, and its removal is not being proposed
linux sampler has a state of being that makes it not able to be included
and that state cannot be address here by this team. either, it gets worked
in upstream somehow, or changed to fit the inclusion terms.

is there anything constructive?.. maybe an audio specific tool?

JACK is in the repos, and i think we all want it to stay in

could be changed about the current ubuntustudio relating to swapping

I've got no time to search the archives, but IIRC by theory there
already is an issue with jackd. I might confuse something. At least
LinuxSampler won't make it into an official repository, since the
addition is a violation of the GPL, IIRC.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-devel] What should be included by default in Trusty?

2014-02-12 Thread helios martinez dominguez
KDEnlive -- Free and open-source video editor http://www.kdenlive.org/

Have never used it, but heard lots about it.

Include an .iso with media produced with only ubuntu studio created content.

/me +1 kdenlive ... anyone else using anything that is relevant for video
 production?

Kdenlive assuming no issue comes along to prevent it from building. It
 may not
get new development for a while as the developer had to take a break and
 next
up is a huge refactoring program, but at version 0.9.6 right now it
 performs
very well and is regarded by many as simply the best video editor
 available in
Linux. It is so important to my work that I could never use any version
 of any
distro in which it could not either be installed or run from a portable
 folder.

Lightworks by comparison is NOT free software, it requires activation,
 the unpaid
version is almost useless and no source code is available. In my opinion
 no distro
 should touch it.
