Re: [ubuntu-studio-devel] ALSA firewire drivers

2014-05-02 Thread Takashi Sakamoto

Hi all,

I'm a developer who works for the drivers. It's my pleasure to give the
package. I really appreciate to his work for packaging, thanks to David.

Well, I want to add some supplemental information.

1. Included drivers
Currently, three drivers are newly available by the package.
 - snd-fireworks for Fireworks based devices
 - snd-bebob for BeBoB based devices
 - snd-oxfw for OXFW based devices

If you want to confirm whether they support your device or not, please
refer to these actual codes. These codes includes device entries and I
added comments for users to confirm easily.

https://github.com/takaswie/snd-firewire-improve/blob/master/sound/firewire/bebob/bebob.c
https://github.com/takaswie/snd-firewire-improve/blob/master/sound/firewire/fireworks/fireworks.c
https://github.com/takaswie/snd-firewire-improve/blob/master/sound/firewire/oxfw/oxfw.c

For example, bebob.c includes comments of '/* PreSonus, FIREPOD/FP10
*/'. Then you can confirm your PreSonus FP10 is supported by snd-bebob.

There are some comments without actual entries. If you have the device,
please inform to me. I'll tell you the way to look for IDs for your
device and add it to the codes.

As David mentioned, the package is daily build. This means that when I
modify the source, the package is re-built and newly available.

2.Current status
For snd-fireworks and snd-bebob, the package includes the same codes as
I've already posted to alsa-devel.

[alsa-devel] [PATCH 00/49 v4] Enhancement for support of Firewire devices
http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2014-April/075841.html

This series of patch is currently under reviewing.

I didn't post the codes for snd-oxfw because the driver has a regression
against snd-firewire-speakers. The snd-oxfw is successor of
snd-firewire-speakers.

3.Internal mixer control
The drivers are developed to focus on 'streaming'. This means just to
handle PCM/MIDI substreams. So they have no functionality to control
internal mixers. Users should use ffado-dbus-server/ffado-mixer for this
purpose.

I'm also a developer of FFADO. Last year, I worked much mainly for
enhancement of mixer control support for Fireworks/BeBoB. Current trunk
has support or improvement for:

 - PreSonus FIREBOX, Inspire1394, FP10 (former known as FIREPOD)
 - M-Audio Ozonic, Solo, Audiophile, Firewire 410, Firewire 1814,
ProjectMix I/O

 - Yamaha GO44, GO46
 - Echo Audio AudioFire2/4/8/Pre8/12

But current package in Ubuntu repository is a bit old.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libffado

So if you want to use the new features, please build it from source.
http://subversion.ffado.org/wiki/InstallingFfadoFromSource

3.jackd with firewire backend is still available
Even if you install the drivers, jackd with firewire backend is still
available. I designed the drivers not to obstruct libffado.

4.bug reporting
Any reports are preferrable. Then please report output from these procfs
node additionally.

/proc/asound/cardX/firewire/*
(X means ID for your device.)

If you have some bugs, please report syslog additionally.

Thanks

I've set up automatic builds of his work (for Ubuntu 14.04), and you can
find and test the result here:

I'm sure he will welcome more testing of his drivers while they make
their way upstream.

It's currently known that they don't work with Audacity and many cards
will not work with PulseAudio either (without special configuration in
PulseAudio). Stuff like this requires work across the stack, so not
everything can or should be fixed in the drivers.

Nevertheless it would be interesting to know what other common
applications work and don't work with his new drivers.

So if you have an old (or new!) firewire sound card in your shelf, feel
free to grab it and plug it in. Happy testing!

I confirmed this on Ubuntu 12.10 with my three sound cards. One is HDA,
others are USB-connected (44.1kHz to192kHz) and Firewire-connected
(44.1kHz only).

When I connect 44.1kHz-limited-sound-card (Firewire), PulseAudio put
44.1kHz PCM playback stream into ALSA driver even if I playback 48kHz
source. Then I disconnected the Firewire device, PulseAudio put 48kHz
PCM playback stream into ALSA driver. Here 96kHz or 192kHz source are
mixdown into 48kHz PCM stream by PulseAudio.

It seems to work what you expected.

my stuff:
USB - EMU-0404 USB
Firewire - Echo AudioFire Pre 8 with ALSA driver which I'm working to
develop, based on Clemens' experimental driver

ttf-mona in font-meta seed (Re: Last call for Oneiric seeds)

2011-08-17 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Dear developer.

The ttf-mona package is included in font-meta.

But the source is discontinued and it's a lack of much Japanese glyphs.

Ubuntu Japanese Local Community release ttf-takao-pgothic package and it
has whole unicode glyphs.
I reccomend you to use this instead of ttf-mona.

Of cource, this change is related to the size of iso image.
ttf-takao-pgothic is bigger than ttf-mona by 3 MB.

wacom-tools in graphic seed (Re: Last call for Oneiric seeds)

2011-08-17 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Dear developer,

I checked graphic seed.
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-dev/ubuntu-seeds/ubuntustudio.oneiric/view/head:/graphics

The "wacom-tools" is not released now. It's old stuff.
Now xsetwacom script in "xserver-xorg-input-wacom" package is alternative.
We can see the details in this page.
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/linuxwacom/index.php?title=History

So I suppose to drop wacom-tools from this seed.

[Apr 21 daily build] installer cannot proceed because of floppy disk drive issue.

2011-04-22 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Hi,

CPU: Intel Core-i7 960
Motherboard: GA-X58-UD5 (X58 Express Chipset)

What happend:

I installed Ubuntu Studio 11.04, daily build as of 2011-04-21.
And the installation process didn't proceed because of floppy disk drive
issue.

What I did:

I enabled floppy disk drive in Bios function but don't use the drive, do
not connect the drive.

I ran installer and the installer was not proceeded just after DHCP
detection.

Then I move to text console to push F4 key. The text concole report
"end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0". I guess this is an issue of
floppy disk drive.

I reboot my system and went to bios section and change the setting to
disable floppy disk drive. Then the installer proceeded.

What I expected:

I can install Ubuntu till maverick the same settings to enable floppy
disk drive and without connecting it to my system. The installer should
run as the same circumstanses.

I hope this trouble will be fixed now but I can't find the same bug at
http://bugs.launchpad.net/.

# I'm happy with natty now, especially for plymouth theme.
# Great thanks for Scott Lavender!

Dependency problem between ubuntustudio-font-meta and ttf-symbol-replacement-wine1.3

2010-11-02 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Hi,

I utilize wine1.3 from Wine Team's PPA and have a dependency
problembetween ubuntustudio-font-meta and ttf-symbol-replacement.

In detail, please read my post to ubuntu-wine-team.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+question/132189

Of cource I'm sure that it's a user's own risk to use some packages from
PPA. But the latest wine package is very useable with some windows
binary of VST plugins. I daily use FeSTige for these plugins and it
works fine with Wine1.3.

So can we modify next ubuntustudio-font-meta package's dependency for
both of ttf-symbol-replacement and ttf-symbol-replacement-wine1.X? This
may avoid making users confused.

Re: Wrong information of release note for 10.10

2010-10-22 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Hi,

The situation of kernel flavour is quickly changed in this half a week
so many users will be confused including me!

http://ubuntustudio.org/MaverickMeerkat

In maverick, we can use generic(i686, amd64) or generic-pae(i686). There
is no preempt kernel. It's only for Lucid. (I have no confidence to use
server kernel for Ubuntu Studio usage...)

So we should write like, "-generic kernel is used for both i686 and amd64".

This seems to be the subtle but I hope to avoid making the users
confused with such an easy-confirmable topics.

And I suggest to open the release notes for this mailing list before
release day because there are some beta testing users and I think they
know the difference between previous and current one. I know Cory K.
noticed us to check the draft bofore each releases. I think this is good
way to avoid making such wrong lines.

Wrong information of release note for 10.10

2010-10-21 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Hi,

I translated Maverick's release note for Japanese users. I've already
put my text on Ubuntu Japanese Community Wiki.
https://wiki.ubuntulinux.jp/UbuntuStudioTips/ReleaseNotes

Then I have some questions.

1. kernel flavour

According to Alessio's message, we cannot use -lowlatency and -realtime
for Maverick and I found there are no kernel packages for Maverick in
his PPA.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-devel/2010-October/002695.html

2. Audio group

I think MusE needs for users to join in audio group. In my machine, I
can't start MusE if I'm not in audio group.

3. lv2 packages with question mark

We can download and install both lv2vocoder and lv2-c++-tools.
So there is no need with question mark.

In my text, I added some notes in each parts. I want the administrator
to check these items and make appropriate modification.

Re: Putting the cart before the horse.

2010-10-04 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
Hi Scott,

In this kind of work, the screenshot is more powerful to give our
opinion than some comments.

https://wiki.ubuntulinux.jp/Mocchi?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=0.scott_grid_analyze.png

I think this mocup has much information in a first browser screen and a
bit difficult to get the informations to need.

Then I re-align some components which you made and put some shots from
current ubuntustudio.com.

https://wiki.ubuntulinux.jp/Mocchi?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=1.takashi_modified.png

I change the logo to Cory K.'s Ideas because I want to put the COF
circle's color as key color.

This is the Grid-Analyzxe.

https://wiki.ubuntulinux.jp/Mocchi?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=2.takashi_grid_analyze.png

I put some basic and most needed information in the top. And I put much
text information to bottom. This layout will be good for several kind of
users, both newcomer and elder.

What I mean is not pushing my design but I prefer your mocup to current
ubuntustudio.com design. It's simple and easy to wathch. But there is
not so many information...

If you need my help and work, I have some time to help you till this
weekend. I can uunderstand and use the W3C's specification for (X)HTML,
CSS 2.0, JavaScript(ECMA Script), PHP 4 and 5. I'm willing to help you
with drupal if we share the basic source like MySQL data or theme
templates and so on. It'S a pretty sad that I usually use the other engines.

Cheers!

1. Then firewire sound device user can use web services like ustream,
youtube (with flash script) or pulseaudio applications like skype.

2. So You can use the sounds from JACK application for ustream or skype.

3. And You can utilize PulseAudio's networking with JACK.

Re: Pulse Audio and Jack in Maverick

2010-09-03 Thread Takashi Sakamoto
You can see this integration on http://ubuntustudio.org/LucidLynx as
"Pulse Audio built against Jack is available".

This integration is for lucid or later because "pulseaudio-module-jack"
package is not released for karmic or latter refering to this URL,
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/pulseaudio-module-jack

I'm a Japanese user of Ubuntu Studio and make some documents in Japanese
community. Last week I make a document about this PulseAudio integration.

https://wiki.ubuntulinux.jp/UbuntuStudioTips/Application/JACK-PulseAudio

In this document. I suggest to use qjackctl option "Execute script after
Setup" instead of config file. If you check this option and input two
commands, you can get "PulseAudio against JACK", load this module just
after JACK runnning.

If you are interested, read it with web translation service like google
or yahoo with plain text.
