I second what Cory is saying. Help developing a cohesive theme across the
desktop and website would be incredibly appreciated.

Unless someone feel strongly otherwise I am going to contact ginger at Libre
Graphics and see if we can defer the full page ad until closer to the 11.10
release.

If anyone has anything for the ad though, please let us see it.

An ad that conveys a well formulated overall theme and message
platform, and that targets a clearly defined audience is easier to
create and much more likely to produce the desired effect. This
requires plenty of thought, so putting time on your side would be a
good thing IMO.

Re: Ubuntu Studio Advertisement

2011-04-13 Thread ricardo lafuente
Hi everyone! I'm one of the Libre Graphics people that seem to be
mentioned a lot in this thread :-)

We're still dealing with printing issues for issue 1.2. As it has been
pointed out, the Ubuntu Studio ad would go in issue 1.3, which is now
being drafted and planned.

Regarding size, the dimensions are A4 with a 5mm double-page bleed. So a
document with exactly 215x307mm is what we need.

Regarding DPI -- 300 would be ideal, 200 is okay if you can't get to
300. Ideally, using SVG would do away with the DPI issue, but that's not
the case if you plan to include bitmap images in the ad.

Also, +1 regarding the idea of showcasing a new direction for Ubuntu
Studio. The point about it being perceived as a mostly audio-oriented
distro was true for me as well :-) This is a great opportunity to get
noticed, so it's worth going through a little effort to make sure your
intended message passes through. Nevertheless, in my personal
experience, it's better to come up with a mock-up *quickly*, and then
iron out edges from there.

Finally -- we're lurking and reading, trying to figure out where we can
begin work without clashing with existing aesthetic perspectives. As I
mentioned to Scott, we'd probably like to start by customising the UI of
Inkscape and Gimp to begin with, in order to make them look smooth
inside the UbS general UI direction.

Along with a deadline, you'll need to be in on the theming chat that
we hopefully get together w/the Libre graphics guys as per Ricardo's
suggestion. We'll need to have a overarching concept/direction that is
cohesive.

@Scott - Can you head up scheduling a meeting with these guys on IRC?
Just something to brainstorm on concepts. Hell, we still need to find

I think there may be some confusion.

The Libre Graphics advertisement is independent of the website update.

The offer from the Libre Graphics folks was for the next edition which
is scheduled to drop in May. I do not think we have the latitude to
change this deadline without confirming with ginger, Ricardo, or Ana.

I *think* Cory is suggesting that we schedule to roll the website out in
time for 11.10.

I had originally hoped to draw some attention to Ubuntu Studio and
solicit some graphical design work flows from professional graphic
artists who use open source tools with the advertisement. If we have a
definitive, exciting, and revolutionary plan for the 11.10 release
(XFCE, new UI, etc) we might want to see if we can hold the ad to
coincide with 11.10 and create some excitement.

We will need to develop a concept for the ad and also create the graphics
for it.  I don't know any requirements from the Libre Graphics folks at this
time, I am aware that they work with .svg files so I would expect Inkscape
to be a perfectly acceptable medium to create the artwork.

I would ask about size and DPI requirements. Proper dimensions even
when working with SVGs is important.

That's excellent news! Might I humbly suggest that the ad address the
full range of Ubuntu Studio capabilities, i.e. graphic production AND
video production AND audio production. The general impression which is
fairly derived from the online documentation is that Ubuntu Studio is
primarily aimed at the audio production market with graphic and video
production as secondary after thoughts. Just my $0.02, thanks.
