Honestly, Plymouth is something I'd have to dig into myself as well.
IIRC, there's a good bit of info out there though.

For me, the angularity of the new font vs. the COF is very striking.
Might work better if we do something like the Ubuntu COF where it's a
negative/cutout/whatever. Using out blue.

I'm sure you can make a page with ideas under out artwork section on the wiki.

Here's a link to what I used to create the current Ubuntu Studio Plymouth
theme - http://brej.org/blog/?p=158

And it would be awesome to get someone working on some new artwork for
Ubuntu Studio. All of it probably needs some love, including wallpaper, GDM
screen and desktop theme.

It would be awesome to get a hold of the current Lucid font, because I think

I have to admit that I'm not really a fan of the new font myself and
furthermore, I feel that Ubuntu Studio should walk a different path than
vanilla Ubuntu.

I'm new to this type of thing, so how would be the best way to go about it?

Sketches and mock-ups would be fantastic. Getting community feedback can be
extremely helpful but community "approval" is neither a probability nor a
necessity.

Good to hear from you again, Cory.

I would love to revamp the studio artwork. Do you have any links to some
documentation on creating a theme, particularly with Plymouth? I can Google
it, and probably will, but it might save me some time if you point me in the
right direction.

It would be awesome to get a hold of the current Lucid font, because I think
it looks good. I'd disagree with changing the COF to fit the font, though.
I'm fond of the Ubuntu Studio COF. Of course, if people prefer that it'd be
changed, then so be it.

I'm new to this type of thing, so how would be the best way to go about it?
Should I start by submitting some sketches/mock-ups and see if the community
approves?

I've been trying to stay away from putting my 2 cents so things can
just develop. I gotta say a little bit now. ;)

I can most likely get the letters to make our logo text from the guys
@ Canonical. The font is still under development. *If* it is decided
that the new font is used for our text as well, I believe our COF will
need a more angular revamp to fit this new type style.

The effort around the "Made with Ubuntu" idea is cool, but I wanna say
it would be nice to see someone step up and revamp the studio art.

As far as I know, the new Ubuntu font is not yet available.

Here's my contribution. I tried my best to imitate the Lucid font, and even
added a bit of the Lucid purple in there. There are three pics: a fancy

Also have you tried the new Ubuntu fonts?
Also you can give a little more space between the letters and the border.

That was a really bad attempt at sarcasm I assume. I'm sorry if my
comment(s) seemed a little harsh. I couldn't help myself and meant no
offense to anyone.
I no longer use Ubuntu Studio but rather vanilla Ubuntu (lucid) these days.
But I still lurk around the Ubuntu Studio mailing list as an observer as
from a developers perspective, I find its evolution and development
interesting.

Kind regards

I like the idea and agree that it could help show others what can be done
with Ubuntu Studio. It would be nice if several different "*Made on Ubuntu
Studio*" logo styles were available to suit the usage-scenario. If they
were readily available, professional-looking, and easily accessed, I can
envision people using them.

Thanks for thinking of this!

Ubuntu Studio artwork proposal

2010-06-14 Thread C. F. Howlett
Greetings Ubuntu Studio Users:

Forgive me if this issue has been addressed or implemented before. I'm
still learning my way around the various communities and projects and
might well have missed relevant efforts. But if I have the privilege of
actually proposing a viable innovation...

As I look around the coffee shop to see who else is availing themselves
of the free and fast wifi connection, one thing becomes obvious; most of
these folks are Mac users.

I live in a town which is effectively a suburb of a major city. Most of
my fellow wifi explorers are high school or college students or the
occasional business person.

I trust it's not too heretical to state my opinion that Apple designs
excellent hardware and software. However, the thought of locking myself
into Apple's vertical matrix is even more objectionable than the cost
of acquiring a "premium" computer. So, I have become an avid student
and user of Ubuntu Studio.

One has to appreciate the rabid adoration of the Mac crowd as well as
admire the integration of all things Mac into a fairly cohesive and
persistent marketing effort. For example, scroll to the bottom of this
web site;
http://www.faculty.fairfield.edu/faculty/hodgson/Courses/so191/Projects2007/Stott/Site/Welcome.html

"Made on a Mac"
http://innovationfeeder.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/made-on-a-mac.jpg

Simple, elegant, effective and memorable. Apple officially licensed
this art for some time;
http://www.theapplecollection.com/various/MacMade/AppleWebBadgesMadeOn.html
 and dictated a standard usage policy;
http://www.apple.com/about/webbadges/index.html. Naturally, Apple users
also crafted their own vision of this art;
http://allaboutiweb.com/index.php/2008/08/free-custom-badges/. Apple no
doubt condones if not outright supports such innovation resulting in
some enviable endorsements; http://the-tech.mit.edu/Projects/Macmade/.

So, my point; shouldn't we have a similar, and no doubt superior, item
for our favorite distro? Personally, I've elected to include something
along these lines in whenever I can;
http://spreadubuntu.neomenlo.org/files/Tabbed%
20Tearsheet.sla-page1_0.jpeg and
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7001421/Washington%20Ubuntu/Ubuntu%20Card.pdf,
but I would really like to see as an OFFICIAL "Made in Ubuntu" type
piece for marking our creations. It could be effectively deployed in
print and electronic mediums. I believe that this item would help
promote the Ubuntu Studio distribution and, as an added benefit, knock a
bit of SMUG out of the Mac crowd. Just sayin...

Ubuntu Studio developers and users; What say ye?
